10 REASONS WHY • 4x4 Fuso Canter Expedition Vehicle Chassis

Fuso/Canters are often listed in the JDM auctions as Retired Firetrucks - Some 4x4. Worth a look. The Firetrucks are impeccably maintained and garage kept with ridiculously low mileage. More numerous are the Toyota HIACE and Nissan ATLAS - smaller but incredibly capable machines. The ATLAS has a more robust engine (TD27- Timing Gear!) and has appropriate gearing for highway speeds. The HIACE winds out around 60MPH. My ATLAS had 6k miles on it and cost me 5.5k USD to get it to my driveway here in the US.

I was a sales engineer for Fuso trucks for Asia Pac. Parts are super easy to find and cheaper than most reputable brands. They hardly break down which give me more time to do other stuffs and owners more time on the road to make money! Great choice, guys!

I’m going to try and import a double cab 4x4 right hand drive from somewhere in Europe. Late 90s and early 2000s vehicles seem to be the sweet spot for simplicity and creature comforts. You can always add an aftermarket touch screen entertainment system with Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, etc.

We had the Fuso on our list for future full-time rig builds for a long time. Great pick. We ultimately still want to get to more remote areas and it's turning radius and size would still be too limiting for us and we are trying to be ok with less living space. It's a toss-up because we definitely learned that more living space would be nice after spending so much time on the road.

Have you found something a little smaller. I agree smaller gets you more places, for me I want a daily driver and I spend most of my time in suburbia so small as possible while still big enough to live in. I want something under 5m.

We've decided to stick with the T100 platform, but will be building a more complex camper the will allow better use of space. The goal is to stay within the stock vehicle width and length (75.2 x 209 inches)but have a queen size bed, inside kitchen space, a toilet, 25gal water tank, and insulated walls. I've drawn up the plan and am doing research on sourceable materials, but trying to get everything in order before taring apart our current adventure rig. The 2nd gen tacoma would be a very similar sized vehicle but offers more power and better turning radius at the same fuel efficiency if you can work with the lower payload capacity and higher budget.

I, just before watching, decided to get a Fuso 4x4 but didn't realize they had part time 4x4 so that's a plus. I'm already driving a 20' Sprinter so that's good too. The only thing I wondered about is: Don't some models have a Cab/Cabin pass through?

How is the power when cruising at highway speeds? What is a comfy (for the engine) cruising speed? Can you keep up with traffic on mountain passes?

If it's anything like mine, you're fine till you hit the slightest hill. Then it's necessary to drop a gear and rev her as traffic passes. Engine revs 2.5k rpm at 100km/h. But mines an older model.

How is it driving highway speeds and up inclines on the mountains? I hear it struggles to coast at 70mph (112km) and even more on climbs.

We cruise around 62 to 65 on the highway. There is a governor around 3000 rpm which puts max speed around 70. It’s definitely not a power house and you have to downshift to climb grades, but it keeps going and going and going. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. I've zero experience driving a Fuso and am considering this for my overland chassis. The V6 gas versions that EC is sorta forced to go with appears to be more powerful according to specs.

Hi I love this idea! Also once you've worked hard on the build out of the box for living, if and when the actual vehicle is no good anymore you can transfer the box to another vehicle instead of having to do another buildout. i was looking for a Sprinter (but they are not 4x4,) the only downside to the Fuso I can see is gas mileage. My BIG QUESTION, (please help): how did you search for and find one of these used? I am finding that to be a very big headache, not finding much out there at all.

We’ve actually gotten it up around 70, the governor kicks in at 3,000 rpm’s. We try to keep it between 62-65 for the best fuel economy. Highly recommend the truck, we LOVE it.

In hind sight I really think one of those is too much truck for the travel we have intended. Those things are BEASTS in every aspect. We are very comfortable cruising at about 62mph, though she will do 70, you just loose some of your fuel economy. If we cruise at 62, we get 11-12mpg for fuel economy.

I am curious to know if the Fuso comes with frontal crash airbags ? Something that would be of concern to me If I wanted to travel abroad. Of course no one drives thinking of crashing their vehicle but someone else may lose control and hit you. Also how stable does it feel in strong crosswinds considering its high stance?

It does not have front airbags. I think the chassis was designed for industrial applications where it will get beat up and simplicity is preferred. It is very susceptible to high winds just like most high profile vehicles are.

odds are you are going to have to build/have it built one for that price. Picking up the Fuso FG 140 for sub 40k, (few years old) then design and built a camper shell to your needs. This is my plan anyway.

the price is fantastic when you consider your other options based on comparable payloads. As a 3 ton truck, the cost of a F550 is 30k more than a new Fuso. No brainer. Better MPG, turns better, cheaper, smaller engine.

It’s amazing it can even move with only 165hp. Love the idea of having to do an exhaust regeneration in the middle of the woods. And common using your fuel for your gear? Should be propane so there’s no chance of something messing up and syphoning your fuel out. The previous fuso 4x4 has mechanical diesel and no dpf filter

Your an idiot, it’s labeled as a a Canter. Canters only come with 161 hp and the engine label says not to exceed 14 000lbs on the engine. My 3/4 dodge has a more reliable, more horsepower, and cheaper oil changes. By the way it’s not a canter in the video

165 hp for a diesel is a dog world then a gas vehicle…the fuso has plenty of torque and can be driven well with out issue on the hwy. a fuel cap lock takes care of any issues with that ….regen is better then def and is usually allowed in enviro picky countries.

@@pulkpuller dpf filters are a 2007 and newer diesels and scr was incorporated in 2010. There is nothing good about doing regens, your muffler can cause fires. I’ll post video of a full red check engine light fuso camper. Real stupid having a fuso for camper. The last 2 years fuso stopped giving use these terrible engines and transmissions and only offer a 6 liter gas and an Allison 1000 transmission. Why would anybody need a 3 liter diesel? My kabota tractor has a bigger engine.

Great video guys! I am also planning a build myself and trying to decide on a chassis. Now that you have been traveling with this Fuso chassis for a while, what would you say are the top 10 negatives about the chassis?

There really are not too many. 100 mpg would be nice. Lol. There are times when we wish there was an extra cab with seats. The GVWR is 14k# which doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room. Ours with humans and full tanks is 12,500# that only gives us 1500# for accessories; bumper, winch, generator, roof top tent, rear storage boxes, etc..

I don’t think it was ever designed to be a powerhouse, but it gets around just fine. Only on the worst will that happen, such as a long 10%+ grade at high elevations and it’s 35 mph in 4th to 3rd gear.

Love our 2017 Fuso FG and the very capable Duonic transmission. And I really love getting 14 mpg. Not worried about low sulphur diesel either, would rather have my truck comply with existing clean engine laws than be able to travel to places without low sulphur at this time. Low sulphur will be the standard soon enough.

Not so sure about the worldwide service network for the Fuso. At least in Europe this chassis is not very common. There are lots of stories about bad service and that the Fuso is the not beloved child of Mercedes. Anyway. Hopefully you guys have fortune with your vehicle. Cheers from Europe

I drive fuso canter 3.5 ton, its 2 and a half years old it's got 156.000 miles on it. the only problem I've had was the water pump failing at 126.800 mile it was fixed by the merc dealership under warranty, it gets serviced on time every time by the dealership. The last New truck I had was a iveco and I was on first name terms with ladies at the iveco assist call center ?. And the fuso was built I Turkey . Ps I'm from England

You will not be able to buy ultra low sulphur diesel all over the world like you can in America and Europe the high sulphur content diesel will shut down your engine. A gasoline engine would be a better choice for a global expedition vehicle
