I've lived here for over 5 years now and before I moved into a larger 3 bed house my overall outlay was about $500 US a month, even now the cost is $900 for absolutely everything, so yes, totally agree, Chiang Mai is extremely affordable. I currently pay around $7 a month for an internet only plan for my mobile which allows me to use apps to call people but more importantly it allows me to tether devices to the internet so I get 20Mbps with unlimited usage and no ties ins to any internet service

You’re absolutely spot-on about the healthcare Brett I was in Pattaya in March and I had a tooth pulled out for the first time in my life it cost 500 baht and took about 10 minutes And I had literally just walked into the dentist a couple of hours earlier in the UK you would’ve paid a couple of hundred pounds and waited a couple of weeks And the rest of the NHS in the UK is just bloody shocking you’re really not missing anything by living in Chang Mai

I agree Chiang Mai is amazing place to I've for all the reasons you listed. I am retiring in a few ears and intend to move to Chiang Mai with my daughter. I cannot leave her behind as I am worried for her health and safety, London (where we live) is a dangerous place to live these days

I lived in CM for most of 2019. At that time there were lots of Meetups and Facebook groups with expats. I imagine it’s still similar. I made a lot of friends that way. Give it a try next time :)

I miss Chiangmai, its peacefulness and calmness. But my wife and I will be there this year, we have similar attitudes to why we live in China, its overall cost of living is so much better, its a shame that China hasn’t developed a nomad visa, its unlikely they will in my opinion but I hope I am wrong!

Even in the hot days I can still walk around in C.M. And all night. And usually cools at night. I couldn't walk much in BKK. And hot at night. Maybe better in certain months. But can't get use to it. And very cheap to fly around Thailand. Use C.M. as a home base. I have been there 3 times. But still see new things on the vds.

Pretty much agree with everything. I will say, the burning season can be fierce! I’d always heard about it but this year has been the first experiencing it. I would definitely recommend scheduling your time away from Chiang Mai, during that time…. I would’ve left but went off and got a girlfriend (not part of my plan, lol). Yes! Totally easy to stay in CM for $1k or less. I just got a hotel room for a monthly rate. I don’t need a kitchen. Room, wifi, water & and electric… I have never paid more than $225. Depends how much I run the AC. Water is fixed cost. They even clean my room once a week. And no, I’m not saying where. Lol… It’s down Chang Phuak rd. That’s all I’m sayin. FYI, best biscuits & gravy is at Bella Goose. Hands down.

I agree with everything you said. However, most of the time when I was there for nine weeks in March and April this year Chiang Mai had the worst air quality in the world. Two million people people in northern Thailand were hospitalised with breathing problems. There is a high rate of various cancers from the toxins in the air during burning season.
@markuserikssen
@markuserikssen Жыл бұрын
That's also one of my concerns. I read that a lot of expats escape the city for some months during burning season. I also wonder what the air quality is like outside of burning season.

Hey Brett. I have enjoyed you videos on KZbin for several years now. I watched one from May of last year which brought up a question. You were riding your motorcycle and talking about getting a Thai driving. You said the process was simple and brief, and you said after watching a video they asked if you wanted the license for car, motorcycle or both. You said both for yourself. I understood from another Vloger you must have a motorcycle endorsement on your western license to get a motorcycle license in the kingdom. If I go for a Thai license instead of just using an ‘International Driving License’, will I be limited to a car license only? I am applying for the Elite Visa and their promotional literature say the will assist you to get a Thai driving license. I do not have the cycle endorsement currently. Do you know the regulations regarding this issue? Thanks, Phil

@brett_dev - only concern I have is - getting great insurance that is 100% accepted with amazing coverage when I get old. Are there plans in Thailand for expats that you can have 100% confidence in as you age???
@andyrbush
@andyrbush Жыл бұрын
You can 'buy' medical insurance but as with any insurance but whether it will pay out is another question. There are a lot of exclusions, all cancer is excluded. However, the medical service here is so good and inexpensive that you can self pay for most treatments. Comparison, Houston USA hospital, triage for an infection and no actual treatment despite waiting three hours plus, they were too busy, billed about $5,000. Khon Kean Ram hospital, same infection, waiting oh lol at least15 minutes, then straight to see the doctor. Xrays tests, treatment and medicine $150. Another example, Khon Kean University hospital three full body scans for cancer on two machines, (clear) about $700. And virtually immediate appointments for me as a farrang aka foreigner. Another example, I had a really painful locked up muscle, couldn't sit down. The doc asked if I wanted treatment for it. I asked when could it be done. He looked shocked and simply said 'Now". I could barely walk to the treatment room. A short time later after laser treatment I was making the nurses laugh by dancing around to demonstrate how it was fixed. Got the bill and laughed it was so cheap. For Thais, register with the government hospitals price one time $1.00 yes, 30 Thai Bhat, and free treatment the rest of your life, with no waiting lists that I have heard of. Some treatments like dialysis they ask you to pay for the tubing, about $400 then it is free. One of our relations is on that. If you are sick in Thailand, and need to stay in hospital you will not want to get better too quickly. The doctors are wonderful and not rude like in the west, BUT the nurses are delightful caring little angels.
@andyrbush
@andyrbush Жыл бұрын
PS treatment here in Thailand is cheaper than the co-pay in the US for those of us old enough to be on US Medicare. The UK has essentially no treatment at all available in many places and is now measured as one of the places too many people die of curable illnesses but cannot get treatment. I grew up in the UK and it is the worst place for medical I ever lived, and I have lived in a lot of other countries. It is also easily the most unfriendly place in the world, not to mention cold, wet, windy and crazy expensive and over taxed.

Great video, Brett. I don't trust myself at all on a moped, especially in Thailand. Is it possible to live in Chiang Mai without a moped or a car? How much would I need to budget for a Bolt taxi or something similar if I wanted to get one into the city centre 4-5 times a week?

Great video Brett, thanks for the information and encouragement! Do you ever take trips to the southern islands? If so which one is your favorite so far? Hoping to visit either this winter or early next summer! I'd like to grow my channel a bit larger 1st, but the revenue isn't quite there yet to make me comfortable staying long-term. It's growing though, so some day soon! I'm excited to visit a few places to feel out if Thailand is my vibe. Based on your videos, I'm liking what I'm seeing. Cheers buddy!

That is also I think, why the poor Thais do not resent the comparably rich foreigners here. We are rich because we were good in our past life and are reaping the rewards gifted from Buddha. To resent our luck would be to resent Buddha.

The medical industry gets a bigger rap than it deserves. If you're doing basic stuff then yes but if you're having surgery the surgeons here are behind the times with techniques and they will butcher you. Better off doing the serious stuff in Korea.
