True that, though there's also, in my opinion, one very welcome thing that streaming services have brought about: the death of "hidden" tracks obnoxiously tacked on the last track of an album, following sometimes ridiculously long periods of silence. If it's an actual song and it comes after a minute or two of silence, fine, but if it's like 10 minutes of silence and the hidden track's just a snippet of supposedly funny studio banter or a pointless sound effect collage, it's pretty infuriating. Now it's not _that_ big a chore to separate actual song hidden tracks into separate songs, or delete the extra fluff altogether if it's some useless comedic bit, but a chore nevertheless.

John: Another reason I buy CD's is there is a growing number of CD's with extra bonus material on a 2nd or even a third disc, giving the fan different takes during a recording session, different mixes and even demos of finished studio albums. For instance, Led Zeppelin has had their discography remastered and repackaged as a two disc reissue of ALL their studio albums, giving the purchaser more value. Technically, you don't own anything beyond the silver disc, a fragile jewel case and whatever printed content / artwork the record company deigned to include in said case. The music usually belongs to the record company (songwriting royalties aside) and said music lives on a silver disc prone to bronzing and other forms of degradation over time. www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub121/sec4/ As John pointed out, you can copy your CDs to a hard drive, make backups and store those backups anywhere you deem fit. How would Steve Guttenberg even begin to replace that massive CD collection in the event of fire, regardless of how good his insurance might be ? As someone who lugged milk crates full of vinyl around for many years in the 70s and 80s, I was elated when CDs replaced records (sound quality aside on those early CDs) it didn't take long before I filled those milk crates with jewel cases. I can definitely see the appeal for albums I'm already streaming regularly but I'm under no illusions on the whole 'physical media is forever' argument. Props to those with the space for ALL of it - sadly, I have to be ruthless with every square foot under this roof.

However, over the past few weeks I've started considering a transport/player to sit alongside my turntable, for similar reasons you just mentioned. Vinyl is great, I love vinyl, but it's also more expensive, it takes up more space, and it often feels like everyone's in a race to grab a copy because so many indie releases are limited to 1,000 copies or less (which I understand given the profile of some artists). I got into vinyl a few years back to slow things down, so it's almost ironic that my love of CDs has circled back for the same reason. I went to the record store last week and grabbed 13 CDs (no vinyl), for just over $100. Half of them were new releases, the other half used for a few dollars. I understand, but streaming services allows you to discover music you don’t know. I buy everything that I discover and like a lot.
@coguglielmi3 жыл бұрын
@@miguelbarrio exactly. Different media for different usages. I discover with streaming, and own cassettes - holding radio broadcasts of what was once called 'black sessions' in France with the cranberries, grant me buffalo, smashing pumpkins, Radiohead, the pixies, sonic youth, pj Harvey... - minidisks from my Japanese time back in '99, vinyls since I was a teen, and of course hundreds of CD on a wall... these are all complementary in fulfilling my desires depending on the mood I'm in. Nostalgia, deep listening, physical experience etc.
@vorlon74423 жыл бұрын
@@miguelbarrio couldn’t agree more. Using streaming for discovery is the way to go. For me, streaming has replaced radio and MTV in a way while I still have my own personal library of CDs, vinyl records and FLACs/WAVs of everything that moves me. I don’t feel so bad about gaming as there are very few games I’d be interested in returning after a decade or two whereas good music stays relevant for centuries.

my favourite reasons for buying physical media on music and films is that streaming services sometimes remove content or provide an alternate version. I also dislike being dependant on a network connection in order to play my music or watch a film. All the things youve mentioned are also great reasons but my top reasons are the ones i mentioned above

Until recently, I bought CDs because I didn't have a network streamer. When I acquired one, I cut back on older albums, but decided that I should still support new bands by purchasing their albums on physical media.

I'm a K-Pop fan, albums are at another artistic level of packaging, you get gorgeous hard covers that feel like fancy books, some have very artistic shapes and materials for the outside package, you get gorgeous booklets, some extras like Photocards, stickers, bookmarks, postcards, it just makes it so fun. although more pricey than your regular jewel case CD, is still experiencing music at another level.
@josexavierjr.56333 жыл бұрын
Agreed! All great reasons, John. LP prices have gotten silly, and CD sound has improved greatly over the years. I still love the vinyl I own, but I don’t see myself adding to the collection. CDs are just more practical. 👍
@Majestic19872 жыл бұрын
Best argument for CDs: You own them. It is no question then if you can or want to afford the monthly fee for the streaming service. There is no service that can go bankrupt or be bought by some bigger player which lowers quality, raises prices or changes their terms of service for the worse. I still have CDs which I basically inherited from my parents. Those still work, I can listen to them whenever I want and there are memories connected to those CDs. And this, by the way, also includes the process of taking them out of the jewel case, putting them into the player, sitting down and focusing on listening to the music. And of course I did backup those CDs as FLAC files so I can still stream them in the house, use them in my car, etc.

Jimmy and Peter, that depends on the artist and the arrangement with their label (assuming they have one). Not only remasters, but also censored versions. You can imagine how annoyed I was when Spotify decided one day to only stream the censored version of Mike Shinoda's Post Traumatic. Spotify has an option for 'explicit' content. That option was checked on my side. But for several months, the explicit version simply wasn't available on Spotify anymore. It's now available again, but I've had enough. I'm buying CDs of all my favorite albums so that no one can screw with my music anymore.

Best thing about cds is you never know when these streaming services are going to lose certain artists or songs through contract and licensing issues, and some artists are only exclusive to certain services. As well, certain mixes or mastering isn't always available to stream, and the cd is usually better quality. Even if you rip your cds then stream them through a cloud its your specific versions. Plus there's the collection aspect of being a fan of an artist and having all their albums in physical format.

Amen and hallelujah. Reason #11: I've been picking up used CDs for 25 cents at the local library. Some of these are marginal wants, but for 25 cents they are "must haves". And some of them are popular albums from artists I never bothered to buy back in the day when they were pressing massive numbers -- Coldplay, U2, soundtrack albums, classical works. At thrift stores the CDs are a bit more than a quarter, but still you find tremendous values.

I 100% agree with you. I have another point. 11. LP needs more engagement which is not convenient most of the times for me. Streaming needs the least amount of engagement. Most of the times I don't feel like I am engaged in this hobby when I stream. This is very good for exploring new music or to listen to those music which I do not have in CD or LP. CD is quite balanced. You need to select the album from the rack and put it inside CD tray. It will give you the pleasure to listen to the whole album (because you cannot jump to other album or singer) and you do not need to panik when Side A is needed to be flipped in case of an LP.

I have gravitated heavily to Physical medai this past year after i canceled spotify to save money. So CDs, Cassettes and Vinyl (much rarer on the last one as the price of them is getting a bit silly now). If i buy digital it's normally because i can't get hold of a phsyical copy. Also as you say services like bandcamp are much better for artists (especially indie ones) due to the high revenue cut they get.

You sold me with reason #4 and #5 - holy crap, the 'second wave' of vinyl is expensive ! Particularly in a relatively tiny market like ours here in Oz - and I expect that smaller countries like NZ are even worse. I get it - small pressing plants, limited output and shipping large slabs of plastic halfway around the world - but that doesn't lessen the sticker shock. We can debate whether a spinning disc sounds better than a hard drive (or a network connection) but the key question for me is simple : 'what percentage of this album is good enough for me to want to hear it repeatedly ?' and that's where Spotify is invaluable to me and 320K is adequate to tip my toes into the water of countless albums. Thanks for the video.

From the time I once started to buy CDs in 1987 until today (I've got them all ripped to hard discs) every few years time added another reason to stick with CDs - and you named them all. The last reason that popped up is the fact (you also mentioned) that artists get more money for selling CDs than for tracks being streamed. And then there is another reason to me: Through all the years (now almost 35 years) I've got a collection still growing and it's part of my life. It's kind of being a musical journal or biography similar to the collection of the books I've read and I'm owning. Getting rid of those CDs (or books) would be as cutting off my former life. One could say I might sell my CDs and keep the ripped versions of them. But to me that wouldn't be the same. Physical items (also vinyls) are kind of brothers and sisters to me that they wouldn't be any longer once they would exist as a digital copy only. P.S. Discovered your channel a few minutes ago and yes: I like your attitude towards HiFi/High End and I'm looking forward to watching more of your old videos and those to come. Keep going!

Appreciate the point about best supporting the artist. I would love to release stuff on CD, tape and vinyl but so far have only managed to release one album on CD. That run has now gone and I can no longer afford to have more pressed. So the next best thing for me is to offer high quality downloads from places like Bandcamp. Streaming is just not viable in terms of the royalty rate. You need many many plays to generate the same income as somebody buying and downloading just one song on somewhere like Bandcamp. For me personally, although I grew up listening to CDs and enjoying the experience with the booklet, etc I like vinyl best, which was what I started out with.

They certainly have a better noise floor. I have several thousands of LPs, most of which I bought at estate sales in the 2000's for pennies on the dollar - when nobody wanted vinyl. I also bought direct drive Tt's and never paid more than $30 for any of them. I'm using the same mindset now with CD's. We have Peddler's mall stores in my area. You can actually get CD's for $.50 to $1, but you have to cherry pick, which can be time consuming. Fortunately, I'm retired and it is my equivalent of scouring the beach with a metal detector.
