Mick Taylor was writing some great songs with Jagger but wasn't getting the credit for it and that was one of the reasons he left. The other reason he left was that he was aware that he was getting hooked on heroin and didn't want anything to hurt his family. Mick Jagger didn't want Taylor to quit and was pissed off when he did. Not even a question about it. Wood is an awesome player and he seems like a fun dude, but the period when Taylor was in the band was when the Stones were writing and recording their best stuff. I sort of get the sense that Taylor thought he was too good for the Stones, and I’m curious what Let it Bleed, Exile On Main St, and Goat Head Soup would have been like with Ronnie on guitar. The stuff Ronnie’s playing on the Faces records was clearly up to snuff, and Im sure he could have sounded fantastic on those records as well. I know Brian started the band, but I personally find his playing the least interesting of all three players.

I watches The Stones line at the LA Forum 1975. The songs were not done as well. Mick Taylor with Keith Richards created a much better sound than with Ronnie Wood. To me, the quality of their playing diminished. If you want to hear the Stones at their best, listen to Get Yer Ya has Out from 1969 , Ladies and Gentlemen from 1972 or Brussels Affair 1973. Ronnie Wood was much better when he was with the Faces. I don’t really get this ancient form of weaving. It sounds like Keith and Ronnie are playing the same riffs and there is no distinction between lead and rhythm. Mick Taylor was a master at lead solos but also played great rhythm guitar. Keith really wanted Taylor to stay in the band but he didn’t reach out to Mick Taylor to tell him. I think Taylor would have gone back if he knew that Jagger and Richards really appreciated him but I guess Taylor was fed up and wanted a change

Yeah the "Ancient art of weaving" mantra is pure garbage quite honestly. Both Keith and Ronnie like to infer there was this massive wall of separation between lead and rhythm when Taylor was in the band - it's easily disproved by watching any live footage. Taylor plays the rhythm on Bitch, Live with Me, Hip Shake, and every Chuck Berry song for starters. Keith took plenty of solos (and his playing was 100 times better then), and especially on Midnight Rambler they switch constantly. It's orders of magnitude above anything they've done since. The image might have really mattered in 1975, but the reality is as time passes what's more important is how the music stands up. Wood's playing just doesn't. The internet and KZbin have introduced Mick Taylor to a lot of new fans and people aren't buying the party line anymore.

Most importantly, although quite an artist, Ronnie will do whatever Keith says. Ron Wood has had problems. But we have mutual friends, and they all say, "He is the nicest man."

In all fairness the Stones were at the end of the road with there song writing. It happens to all bands. I'm not a fan of Some Girls and the disco stuff. The outakes sound better. Start me up might be there last great song.

Out of all the "post-Mick Taylor" Rolling Stones albums, I prefer the album 'Tattoo You' (1981). I believe that Tattoo You is a much better album than Some Girls. And guess who is on Tattoo You, but not on Some Girls ? Wayne Perkins and Mick Taylor ! 🙂 ....Not to mention that great jazz saxophone player: Sonny Rollins...... I believe that their presence on that album made a huge difference. And, post-Tattoo You, I believe that almost all Rolling Stones albums are just rubbish.

@@GarryH60 some of the tattoo songs were left overs . Most were partially composed during Some Girls. They had enough finished stuff for two albums and enough partially for a third album. Could of been a great double album and the other songs were more typical Stones. Jagger wanted to stay relevant thus the more urban sounds for the final release. And Perkins and Taylor I believe only appear on one song. Taylor had to sue to get paid.

@@Gonar1212 Perkins definitely played on the ballad 'Worried About You'. Taylor definitely played on the song 'Tops', and possibly on the song 'Waiting on a Friend'. The song 'Slave' came from the Black and Blue jams during 1975/76: I'm not sure if it was Wayne Perkins or Jeff Beck or Ron Wood that played lead guitar on that song. And Sonny Rollins, the great jazz sax player, appeared on 'Slave' and 'Waiting on a Friend'. I prefer the album Tattoo You to Some Girls or Emotional Rescue.

Stones brought out the best in Taylor. He hasn't done much since except play the blues. Brian was a decent utility man. added some color but was never part of the macro-nutrients as are mick and Keith. IMO Ronnie is the best 2nd axe stone. fits perfect. can't picture Taylor or jones on Some Girls, tattoo you or any others since. just one mans opinion...
