Everything that they went through, a living breathing animal they morphed into what was required of them in order to keep the torch lit and keep rock and roll on a ever evolving trajectory while never straying too far from where they came from, but always with a twist.... i am 60 now (almost), never liked the Stones all these yars beside their soft songs, as I grew older I realized that their blues/Rock is simply fantastic ....and getting better by time....just for me ...they are on top of their career right now....after 60 years of hilarious performance. Seeing 80 year-olds making rock like theirs keeps me getting on, while hearing the modern Music I cannot listen too long

The biggest problem with Goats Head Soup and It’s Only Rock and Roll is that they weren’t recorded by some other artists. Had they been they would’ve been regarded as the great pieces of music that they are. Unfortunately, critics and fans that are easily swayed by critics drove the narrative that these were somehow unworthy. One of the reasons Andy Johns produced Marquee Moon by Television was because Tom Verlaine loved the sound of Goats Head Soup.

The man who in the vid says "The Faces were a Xerox copy of the Stones" is one moron. The Faces had their own thing and style that is not heard in the Stones repertoire. They've been a separate influence on so many rock acts that few have. But talking of "blueprints" one can listen to The Faces and The Black Crowes back and forth as a pretty seamless playlist.

Mick Taylor is an amazing guitarist and contributed a tidal wave of lead solos and riffs that remain unmatched by both Keith Richards and Ron Wood, if fact Mick Taylor is without a doubt one of the finest guitarists in rock and blues it was a real downfall to the Stones.

I remember wearing out the "Some Girls" album, just eating up the pristinely recorded 3, 4, 5, however many guitar tracks that Woody and Keef put down, trying to figure out who was playing what. The way I look at it is; Jones, Taylor and Wood each played on, and helped create the sound of, a shitload of great songs. The Stones catalog is truly ridiculous.......

So Sick of the never ending whining about Brian Jones. He had talent, he died at his own hand. Yes it was sad but not the fault and responsibility of the others . The rest of The Rolling Stones worked their butts off for 50 plus years.and deserve the fruits of their labor. Though they lost finesse with Mick Taylor leaving, Ron Wood blended with Keith and together they all put out some great ROCK AND ROLL. I first saw Wood as Jeff Beck's bass player, with Rod Stewart as vocalist. Great together group-musically. He played bass as a lead, much as Jack Bruce, and the counterpoint created made all the songs listenable over and over. He was ready to be lead immediately as he went to the Faces with Stewart. Nicky Hopkins also played in the Beck Group, so joining the Stones, who used Nicky often, to great success, had an added benefit for Wood. Three different bands, over many years, but all great, with that vocalist, and the same great bottom line. No comparisons are needed, just enjoy the music, and forget about the media stuff. Enjoy the music. It's Only Rock 'n 'Roll, but I like it!

Just not true; they experimented with new wave (Shattered), Disco (Miss You, Emotional Rescue), Moroccan (Continental Drift), Tejano (Sweethearts Together), Gospel (Laugh, I Nearly Died), and many others. Taylor's endless Santana solos had nothing to do with being creative.

Respectable, Girl with far away eyes, worried about you, miss you, tops, start me up. To name a few. Also waiting on a friend. But overall its easy to distiguish mick taylor weaving licks with keith as it is with ronnie. But they certainly didnt lose touch with golden tracks.

yes thats true. The music was changing also. I just think Ron Wood lacks the intensity . The biggest change was Mick Taylors sudden departure. That really threw the stones off. He was the perfect fit. On the album black and blue the song hand of fate its sizzling guitar leads were played by a guirarist from Texas who was trying out. I forget his name maybe Wayne Perkins it could be. But they got Ron Wood. I personally think the era of Exile on Main street was the best ever. Classic.

My boyfriend had a friendship and jammed with "Woody" off and on when he moved from Stewart to the Stones. Just remember it as a heavy drinking and drugging time. That said he much preferred Mick Taylor as their guitarist. He also said the worst thing that happened to Mick was when he got into the Stratocaster guitar.

Its funny they would pay these "experts" to say these things about ronnie without any counterpoint. They seem fooled by appearances stating Taylor played elegant and Ronnie is just a cartoon. Mick T is a quiet and elegant person and definitely as talented a virtuoso as they come on the guitar, but he used to shred with the stones. He was a much more ballsy and showy player in the stones than an elegant one (and that's not negative). And ronnie's boozy showmanship and smile might make things seem easy but the idea that he's not a unique and special musician is laughable considering how many amazing musicians love his playing and have him on their work. Imagine playing such crucial and incredible bass work in a legendary and influential band like the Jeff beck group but still having "critics" act like you're not a serious musician. They also make no mention of the fact that the Faces were one of the highest selling touring acts in the US from 70-74, or how Ronnie held down both lead and rhythm for them as their sole guitarist during that stretch. Or how during that same time he was the primary co-writer as well as bass, acoustic, electric, lap steel and slide guitarist on the 4 best received records of Rod Stewart's career (routinely playing 2, 3 or 4 of them on the same track). As well as doing the same on a fourth album that wasn't quite as critically acclaimed (but still sold well). And then Woody's first two solo albums infuse his usually boozy blend of rnb, soul, rock and even reggae with an almost steely dan style sheen. And the best players in the world were lining up to play with and write songs for him (including 3 stones, a Beatle, David Bowie and one of the greatest soul songwriters and guitarists of all time in Bobby Womack, among others). So Ronnie getting the job with the stones wasn't accidental. His pedigree in 1974-75 was exceptional. And in a perfect world Mick Taylor would've stayed with the stones, Ronnie and Rod with the faces, and hopefully ronnie, Keith and mick would've still collaborated on their solo work. But it's not a perfect world, so Mick Taylor did leave, but Ronnie joining might've saved the stones from breaking up. And he proved to be an exceptional fit for both Keith and Mick's musical hopes. Evidenced by his wonderful country, disco, blues, and soul work on some girls. Their were few guitarists who rocked on a higher level in the 70s than Woody did.

After Steve Marriott left the Small Faces and Stewart and Wood came in as the band evolved into Faces, Ronnie demonstrated great feel and skill as a multi-instrumentalist. His contributions to Rod Stewart's solo work? Hmmm. I missed what was so cartoonish about the guitarwork on the title track of Every Picture Tells a Story, which in my mind displays fine skill on acoustic and slide guitars. When Faces came through L.A. in early 70s, headlining acts that included Deep Purple in Long Beach and Savoy Brown and the Grease Band at the Forum, they rocked the houses. Two stones already provided enough drama in the band. Don't fault Wood for being affable. To be a guitarist with those two demanded qualities aside from and in addition to musical virtuosity. Just ask Ronnie's predecessors.

Kinda fitting too, since Daryl is from Chicago and they spent their early more formative years honing their chops hanging out at Chess Records, with Muddy and the other bluesmen of the day. Brian's namesake for the the group, an old Muddy Waters' tune, personified their musical roots; subsequent personnel and musical genre changes notwithstanding. He was THE Rolling Stone.

Rod typically followed Ron in those days... Rod left the Faces because he had both projects overlapping at the same time, Ron was the common ground within... Notice many times on tour the Faces would play songs from Rod's solo lp's, especially later, even members of Rod's solo band like Martin Quittenton were on stage with the Faces.

lol thetroll The Taylor/Wood discussion or debate will go on for decades after the Stones are done. Even to a rock n roll novice or a non-Stones fan Taylor was the superior guitarist in terms of technique and ability to play solos. Tons of reasons as to why he left, too many to list here but Ronnie seems to be a better fit for the Stones, he has the look, the persona, the image that Taylor didn't have.

When a guitarist plays a solo no guitarist sounds the same or plays it the same way they all have a unique stile to their own, Wayne Perkins did have a melodic sound similar to Mick Taylor, and even Jeff Beck flirted with the idea of touring with the Stones in 1975, but quoted that he didn't want to shit all over the Stones sound and didn't join the band. The Stones became complacent with Taylor and Taylor got frustrated over song credits and creative differences and quit - No one guitarist in the world plays solos like Mick Taylor and the Stones lost that sound forever when he left. Ron Wood plays most of the Mick Taylor live fills very well in his own way and has improved in the later years and also plays the old licks that Brian Jones played on slid and rhythm and he dose it well. Taylor quit and went no where with jack Bruce, M. Taylor is great guitar player yes ! A great front man no ! He's not Eric Clapton who can sing and play hit songs in front of a large audience and Taylor found that out quickly when his solo career tanked and he wanted back in with the Stones in 1981, but the band was set with Ron Wood. Like all Rolling Stones fans I miss the era between 1969 - 1974 this was the best version of the band, but I often feel if The Rolling Stones had gone on with Mick Taylor in the band they would have broken up a long time ago. And So It Goes ..

Mick Corbett I agree. There are some amazing songs since some girls but for the most part it's been crap. Up until you could pop on any stones album and play it through and it's fuckin amazing. After some girls you put a stones album on and you need to skip around

Barney should never have said that crap, I agree. Given the very unkind things he had to say about poor Ronnie later in this clip (never you mind that he kept showing up for the next FOUR DECADES, which Mick and Keith will tell you is what counted in the end), I would feel inclined to challenge this man to a duel to defend Ronnie's honor.
