I am a Live Sound Man/Studio Engineer. I was taught years ago that people who are stage ready sometimes are not ready for studio and/or can work in the studio don’t mean they’re stage ready. I was taught it was about stage presence and engaging with the people to keep their attention.

Curtis is a blessing to KZbin. I learn SO much everyday about the music industry and the ins and outs of it because of Curtis. If Curtis has one million fans, I am one of them. If Curtis has ten fans, I am one of them. If Curtis has only one fan, then that is me. If Curtis has no fans, I am dead. If the world is against Curtis, I am against the world.

professional DJ here with 600+ shows out the SFV (LA) mostly local hip hop shows . Having a good Dj backing you absolutely sets you a part from most acts. Especially when they are actually djing/on the mic(not on their phone). Djing in hip hop is a dying art so when people see a Dj is scratching or doing volume drops at appropriate times its magic. Build w/ someone that actually wants DJ not just get your homie in for free.

Performing is my favorite part! Being from a small city/island in Hawai’i, I don’t get a lot of exposure but it’s also given me a lot of time to work on my live performance. It’s definitely a skill that a lot of aspiring artists under estimate. It takes alot of practice (not to mention all the marketing and ticket selling challenges).

Now i understands that scene n the movie "that thing u do" where tom hanks is teaching the band what 2 do their 1st show w/the label n he says run off stage. Guy asks "well what if they want an encore" n Hanks starts yelling "u run, RUN off the stage like ur life depends on it"

Back in August I went to the Newport Jazz Fest in Rhode Island, and I had an amazing time. Everyone I saw including Thundercat and Anderson .Paak were phenomenal, and what made their performances so great to me was not only are they extremely talented musicians but they also had lots of stage presence, they interacted well with the fans, and they both had a strong intro and outro to their shows.

Great content man. It’s funny and also informative. I play bass with a band and I’m in the back, I don’t even want anyone to see me hahaha. But I dance, and I enjoy myself, I pay attention to what I wear, how I appear and make sure my mind is focused on the music. People sometimes come up to me and tell me they see me and they enjoy watching me enjoy and express myself. But there’s a strategy in what I’m doing and a pure intention. You need to remember those two things when you’re performing in front of an audience. Strategy and intention.

Truely some nice bars at the end 🔥 Curtis, I understand your point about Green Day and apart from some songs I'm not a fan of them either, however for some people they might be their very first touch of seeing people playing instruments live and this can be really inspiring for people to go out and buy instruments. From a producer's or rapper's standpoint I understand seeing musicians play can be boring even more if you don't even play an instrument at all but this also depends which band you're watching and I think Green Day might not be a good example at that moment for you. For me personally, it's more than seeing people playing their instruments. I check their gear, the connection between the musicians, how they perform the songs ( do they make any changes or not), their interaction with the crowd, what extra's do they add to the show like pyrotechnics or whatever, clothing etc... there's so much going on sometimes. There are so many great live bands, please don't get stuck with Green Day. There are great rock bands and rock bands that suck. And there are rap acts that are amazing but also rap acts that suck as well. In fact, I even saw bands with good songs suck when they play live and other bands with bad songs just killing it on stage 🤷

Thank you fam! Valid points all around. And to be fair they were my first rock show years ago. But since then I’ve seen so many amazing bands. My point wasn’t even that I was bored, but more that I found myself distracted even with all of the normal show effects and theatrics.

Gavin DeGraw stays after his small concerts and talks sometimes and I love seeing him for that. He's an excellent performer too, but I just love how he treats his fans. He's so grateful and humble. People don't need an illusion of Hollywood. We don't even like Hollywood. We like to give our hard earned money to people we like. I don't go to rap concerts even though I used to listen to rap. Their concerts are dangerous and vulgar.

I noticed a lot of rappers will start their lyrics full intensity, leaving them nowhere to take the rest of the song or set. So a lot of nuance is lost in the lack of finesse. Its like a rock song starting at the crescendo and just trying to maintain that intensity for their entire song/set.

My biggest issue with live rap concerts is how muffled and muddy the lyrics are. Almost universally. This could be lack of mic control, and/or poor sound man skills. And almost always 2 or 3 other dudes on a mic trying to hype the crowd by just yelling a word or 2.

The worst shows I've ever seen is them damn lyrical, miracle, spiritual cats. I'm a lyrics guy but they often lack the stage presence to rock a crowd. As an actual musician that took the time to learn the craft it's hard to watch a guy on stage spitting bars to his own backtrack with no energy. Another beef I have is dudes gripping the shit out of their mics at the top. You sound like your spitting under water, also slightly pull it away from you. Lastly these cats need to stop cheaping out on their sound check. If you sound like ass I'll likely never come out of my pockets to support you again.

I PROMISE! People who ACTUALLY Go to hip hop concerts DO NOT CARE ABOUT RAPPING OVER SONGS! Only hip hop purists care about that shit. That 23 year old who came to have a good time, or who loves your music so much it saved their life. They don't care... they're happy to be in the experience.

When I see all the hottest rappers in the underground and mainstream stop rapping over lyrics, I will believe that factor actually matters. But I've been to Rolling Loud, Lollapalooza, Summer Jam, SxSW as well as various shows across the country, and open mics and the only people who have said something about the rapping over the lyrics are 30+ in age. And most rappers music is not for that age demographic. They don't want to rage, moshpit, twerk etc.

Rap music is for the studio and realistically can't be recreated in a live setting 95% of the time. Majority of rap concerts are just artist ab libbing to a back track and hyping up the crowd.
