But how far can one break down the music from the flash. It has been noted for 100 years by now that flash is used to hide poor quality. It's the old misdirect. If a rapper needs the women and the cars in the video to get people to watch, then the artist just needs to get better or stop trying.

I make music videos as an extention of artist expression and less as a marketing tool. I have a love/hate relationship with social media because it feels more like a marketing tool to me, so I have to create content that's more strategic. 15 and 30-second videos are for advertising. Music videos for me are art pieces. I've made an animated video, green screened myself into outer space, pretended I was the Blues Brothers, and made a horror movie. If you're a casual consumer that likes short clips, my videos are not for you. I literally write out storylines and scripts when I do it.

Music videos aren't the problem and the only reason why people don't search for music videos it's because there's too many artists that we don't know about. Shows like 106 & Park and rap City would use their platform to introduce new artist hence making us want to find them and look at their videos everyday on that channel but they have gotten rid of all the music video shows. That, and the fact MTV doesn't play music videos anymore unless you spend extra money on your cable bill to get like mtv3 or some mess like that. Television and reality TV shows started the degradation of music videos.

A lot of media, in my opinion, needs to be decentralized to an extent. Streaming has diminished the structure of music when it comes to creation. Music is nowadays made for the algorithm and give artists a false sense of accomplishment. The fans see the streams numbers and freak out but the payouts be sorry.

Yep the only people making real money from streaming are the 10 or 15 artists on top of the charts, but on the same note there are smaller underground artists making enough on streaming to go full-time, but full-time at the level of driving around in a ten-year-old van in living in a studio apartment lol.

@@pyroglyphicsTV yep we're living the dream ain't we LOL 😂 but seriously when I first got into music I never had this much of a following, I was lucky if I got thirty or forty regular listeners to show up to my shows, cuz it was all through word-of-mouth, these days I just make music in my home studio and I have a few thousand regular fans on each streaming service, and I'm not to the point I can live solely on my music, but I am making a significant supplement to my income, though I do feel I should be earning more considering how many streams I have on most of the streaming services. It's a decent income only if you factored in that my music is on like 30 different streaming services around the world LOL.

@@chilisaucecritic I've gone the youtube/bandcamp route nowadays. I used to have my old music on several different streaming sites awhile back. Ended losing more than what I earning, even when I was verified on SoundCloud. Now I'm doing the more direct-to-consumer approach so I have more of a connection with my fans. My local scene took a big hit with the pandemic. All the big venues shut down permanently and the ones open now are small (what i prefer) and starting from square one with getting crowds to come back out. But I'm doing cuz I love making music and I like to think I'm good at it. 😅

Yea I think thats the route these days, dont just invest in a music video for a song and hoping ppl like the song, instead, release the audio on all platforms then create 15 second to a minute video on ur phone to share to tiktok, reels, youtube shorts, and see how the numbers do, and if the numbers are good and u see ppl want a video, THEN shoot a video for it

I think it all goes back to the basis of just having good quality. And with things like music, art, acting , dancing etc. it’s not one size fit all. One of the main issues as to why creativity is suffering is cause everybody for the most part are trying to play the game the same way instead of being Trail Blazers. The greats before us weren’t/aren’t great because they played the game the same as everybody else, they did something that others weren’t willing to do or just too scared to do and boom legendary history was made. People were just having this same convo about releasing albums vs just releasing singles being more worth it. It depends on the type of artist you are. Some artist don’t make good cohesive albums so it’ll be a waste of money for them to do so but they are successful with single releases. But that’s not the case for every artist. Some artists are album/music video type of artists because they have a story or something interesting and creative enough to listen to and watch. You just have to be interesting enough and creative. So the question isn’t if it’s worth it or not. The real question each of us must ask ourselves is, is the body of work you’ve made worth it? It’s more about if the music you’re working on worth it enough to invest in a video. Most of us would say yea from being bias but be honest with yourself. Also, it seems as it comes to creativity we are running more and more far from quality, standard and really building something that can stand the test of time(a classic as they call them)…because I guess it makes us more “down to earth” to water down our content but I like to see art and be wowed by it and think to myself “damn, how did they do that” not “damn, I can pick up my phone and do that too” but I know that’s partially the artist and producer in me and no matter what my debate is, I do understand that there’s a nuance to this social media stuff. I’d just say do what’s best for you and your project cause what doesn’t work for one might work for the other and vice versa. That’s just in life in general, which is why we all live different lives and do things differently to survive Ones size doesn’t fit all(musicians, artists, producers we must understand this)💯

Very Well Said & to counteract the music video problems it would help artist who aren’t strong in the artistic/visual aspect when it comes to music videos; perhaps more creative and artistic and intimate and interactive set ups in their tours/performances. If music videos is not the strong point of an artist, regardless when people come to concerts they want to get to know the artist, more creative lighting, maybe switch to doing concerts in warehouses and not so many clubs and lounges and bars that give the artist especially black artist a difficult time performing or creating the best ambiance needed to create the best outreach on their fans. I definitely encourage music artists to change the WHERE they perform, and GET MORE CREATIVE, and I dont necessarily mean robotic back up dancers but just start bringing more creativity to their concerts to make up for the loss of impact from music videos. There are some artist that I LOVE but when I went to their concert it was just them on a stage & nothing else and it was overcrowded and in the worst venues that were often racist too unfortunately. Quality beats quantity.

It’s better to drop little preview clips from your phone on social media and see which ones get the best response. And then drop videos for the songs that fans like according to the feedback.

A saturated market doesn’t matter if the talent and content and message is undeniable, if you go in a grocery store, you see a million different brand of bread for example but you still know brand of bread is your favorite and are only coming to a section for that specific brand regardless of how many different breads there are to try. Most artists are shit at live performances so I can see why this is necessary however it requires more work to have a flawless performance as opposed to just lip syncing in a music video and then it's edited to make you look as good as the videographer can. Only the underground hip hop artists making music vids are the most creative. Mainstream, though, is too predictable. Clubs, strippers, expensive cars and mansions. It's materialism v.s. real hip hop. There are a lot of gems in this video. Nowadays, I seek music videos less, especially when it's the same plot and concept that should have been just a snippet. I do, however, seek music videos for iconic artists with uplifting messages in their music; the music video usually will reflect that tone. Or older music videos with related points of view. In my opinion, people seek music videos less because they are everywhere; everyone is creating them. You don't need to look up to a star; you can become a star. The traditional star emoji eye mindset is gone. We live in a make-it-happen, buzzing world with a short attention span and easy access to everything. However, music videos can still be valuable. We have to make it for today's mindset.

As an Engineer I've been finding more people wanting to make videos more than recording their music. I've worked with clients where I have recorded their band and I gave them mixes to sync to their video and they would only use the audio from the camera mic instead. I've reached out to clients to record them and they be like we want more video for content and I'm like you do need audio to go with that. I think more people are trying to be seen than actually seen and heard with clarity. Some artist and bands record both audio and videos yet never do anything. I try to avoid these people a lot. When you talk to people to say audio and video go hand and hand they understand but some be trying to avoid it for some odd reason.I would think people watch vids to enjoy the music. I think Engineers and Videographer people need more communication and respect from these clients because we all need each other.

One problem is that the videos are not as creative anymore unless its an artist with a big Budget. The late 90s and early 2ks was some of the best times for music videos. We have the tech to be very creative but now what we get is great quality videos but not alot of creative concepts. I am mainly speaking about up and coming artist. I for one love visuals I hope videos dont go away, Asap rocky and kendrick have some of the most creative visuals. Also there are times when videos have made me like I song I didnt like before seeing a visual.

But when she does, she’s one of the artist whose music videos will always be appreciative especially the lion king album that brought so much culture into her videos and created a lot of jobs and exposure for black owned companies. A lot of the jewlery pieces in her lion king album came from this black owned brand based in Brooklyn if I remember correctly and that video along with one of the actors from the series POSE helped bring a young black women's jewelry buisness to the forefront. Its called beadsbyaree I think if I remember correctly; it used to be one of many small businesses really know by the community or tumblr years ago & her videos helped bring soo much buisness and exposure to black owned businesses instead of paying constant homage to the usual white gucci and Prada, etc. That jewelry companies merchandise is almost Always sold out now and doubled in price because of Beyoncé music videos & once again it felon the artist. mainstream Artist like beyonce, kendrick lamar, frank ocean, and J cole, sza, are some of the artist who should still create music videos because their artistic contribution is still needed and their influence is still needed go help bring more black and brown fashion brands to the forefront because of their strong influence on the culture.

As a video editor I always tried to convince my rapper friend to stop giving a f on music clips when you're beginner/broke/music not professional. Its just silly, video editing is long and slow or expensive if you pay someone, meanwhile the listener barely cares about the design as much as the music itself.

Drill rappers killed the music video, if you look back when chief keef and the chiraq rappers started popping in 2013, music videos no longer needed to be hight budget mini movies but they became just the rapper in his hood with his crew, that became the blueprint for music videos since then and because it got reptitvie very fast people don't check for videos because they dont add anything to the song anymore. I think music videos used to be an addition to the song, it was respected just as much as the song by the artists and fans but now adays music videos don't add anything but showcase the song. Also before, Albums were anticipated and were listened to for a long time so fans would check for the music video, nowadays a new anticpaited album comes out, 2 days later you move on to the next thing. Theres too much options, too much music and just too much stuff on the internet in genral for anyone to care about an artist outside of their songs.

Last music videos that captivated me were the SchoolBoy Q album where he was shooting the short films for the songs and it was all connected. A music video for me has to be cinematic now, I don't want to see anyone just rapping at the camera anymore. Maybe a Lupe Fiasco music video, Kendricks We Cry Together and yeah Qs stuff from a few years back. But definitely artist that have been solidified and have huge budgets and are typically a little more creative than rapping in front of a camera and the homies or girls dancing etc done with pep rally music videos for sure.

I produced 21 videos in a year in a half, one thing I learned is that it didn't get me a lot of payoff monetary wise but I did put me in another kind of category meaning I have the underground lit up ! I got mad respect and juice. Now I'm getting paid but It did take awhile, now I'm working with bigger artists with bigger names. So if you want my opinion, I believe do what ever it takes to get to that next level, if you are independent than bring that attention to you and invest in yourself because no one else will. At first the videos didn't bring the money but having a body of work to show people helps a lot.

Music videos aren’t the problem, tbh. It’s the artists that don’t think outside of the box when it comes to the budget. I agree with the videographer when it comes to just picking up a phone and making a video, especially when the budget is tight. The more polished vids should be for established artists with a huge following. The most recent music vids that I watched were from Robert Glasper (“Black Superhero”), Kendrick (The Heart, Part 5), Logic (“DadBod”, “Aquarius III”), Thundercat (“Dragonball Durag”), and most recently Aesop Rock (“Mindful Solutionism”). The only newer indie artist I’ve watched a vid for was Rap Is A Martial Art’s vid for his “Wong Fei Hung” freestyle. A lot can be done on the DIY tip on a budget. If you have a phone with a good camera and plenty of storage (especially if you have a big SD card), then you can shoot and edit a brief vid yourself. Earl Sweatshirt has done it (“East”), Aesop Rock has done it (“Homemade Mummy”, which wasn’t shot on a phone, but it was just footage of an arcade trip), and Thundercat did it for “Dragonball Durag”.

Peace. I had to give this one some thought. I had a kneejerk reaction when I first saw it earleir but I deleted it. As a guy thats been living this culture of hiphop since the 80's in every form, b boy, graf writer, dj and emcee I would definitely continue to make videos if I had a project coming out. Heres why. My audience is in there 40's-50's many of them are not on tiktok like that. They grew up getting their music a certain way. Why would I make them go find me elsewhere? They want a dope video. This doesn't mean that I wouldn't apply what the young fella said, because that is good information. The 9x16 look is now so I get it. I think his advice was geared for the people in his age bracket that make the same song and video every time. The challenge is for artists to step their creativity up when it comes to visuals. Make something that stands on its own without the song. Make art and art lovers will gravitate to it and know your audience. Older emcees are in a different lane so we need to move differently. My audience has kids and mortgages, and when they're in the mood for some our level entertainment they're gonna head over here to youtube. Also if you're making music that ppl can't bump in their car, you're wasting your time. So yes videos are still relevant just not like before.

Music videos (if done the right way) are still needed to help shift the culture back into the right direction and healthier direction. Also it will help bring much needed exposure to more small ethnic businesses. We have to make up for the amount of harmful influences that hip hop videos in the past created in the past that influenced the consumer culture of majority white owned fashion brands , white owned car brands, and white companies point blank period, Those music videos cannot be the last videos that our future youth especially in America see or can possibly still run the risk of being influenced by. We will never be able to get rid of the chokehold that white business has on ethnic people if we allow older music videos that promote Gucci, Dior, Chanel, etc. & heavy lace wig wearing, botched surgical bodies, as our last visual influences in the music industry.

In almost every hip hop song today you can hear about 3 or 4 of their fashion brands mentioned in their music and it’s part of the problem. We are responsible to fix that and shift the culture back into being lucrative for the people that make the music and make the culture

I agree with the point of we see the artist way more than before so don't seek the music video as much. Back in the days you didn't have access to a artist outside of interviews. Now with social media and youtube, you get too much of them to the point were the mystic is gone, you know everything, they're completly transprant. It removes the image of the artist to the point where the only thing people seek from them is the music alone, were before artists I feel like were viewed like celebrities in the public eye because you never seen their real life. This also has caused people not to care about artists brand or image, I think thats why its harder for new rappers to break because of this, and with tik tok now shifting popularity, it caused music that is tik tok friendly to be more valued than a great song. I think the decline of hip hop now its because of this.

if u are a underground artist and have 10k to invest that is good and industry standards dont mean shit , the so called music industry done spent billions on non talented artist and that is why they are going broke , even though the industry made billions for almost 100 yrs , the music business is not a good example to model from because music business is not sustainable and its a business that is based on constantly inflating money so if u got 10k to invest if u are an artist and u come from a lower income hood then 10k is great that is nothing to shit on

My opinion is music videos are still important in some aspects. You get a 2fer! Meaning you get to see the artist and hear the music at the same time. But the attention span is the problem. people don't spend the time they did before in investing into the artist. Case in point everybody here watched this video that was 22 minutes, that's at least 4 music videos but how many people that watched this watch a 4 to 5 min music video? People consume music differently now. They wanna listen while they drive, workout, clean the house, cut the grass etc. You can't do that with a video. But people take the time to watch informative content like your channel and you are prepared mentally to ingest it. How many times have you heard or seen a clip of a song and then went to go listen to it on Apple Music or Spotify? You didn't go look for the video. With music your brain says LISTEN with news, content podcast etc your brain says WATCH. ON KZbin music when you're listening to a song and it has a music video there's a button on top that says video how many people actually tap that and watch the video, good data to see.

5:21 up to this point I dont think in the video he is saying dont shoot a nice video and pay someone from it, I think he's saying wait until people are wanting to see that particular song as a video then do a video. Through this process of shooting promo concepts 110-20 for one song. after doing this for maybe 10 song, maybe there will be two that people like. Shoot Videos for just those and spend a budge on it. but I will keep watching to see if that's it or if there is a plot twist lol

One of the issues is that the "story line" for most rap videos has been the same boring, predictable formula for decades. Showing off prestige cars, flashing jewellery & other ostentatious signs of wealth, scantily dressed women gyrating & violence. Videography that involves telling real stories is lacking because lyricism that should inspire videos is also lacking.

Good and bad points as always. But remember: KZbin gets u paid on click-through-rate. So YT specifically it makes sense to put some kind of full video up. Also I see musicians drop an "audio only" video, and then a music video later, and it ends up splitting their views, which generally, for a small channel makes it seem like you have less views per video. TikTok is a funneling platform you don't make money there. Think about where you're trying to make the money from to answer this question.

There’s room in the game now to do it either way, long video or shorts. Many of todays artists don’t have to rely on one way to generate revenue. The game is wide open. AI might make a new game of it all. Organic vs inorganic art is the new battle on the horizon.

I’ve made 300 songs this year far from done. I’ve made all these songs by myself. Next year I’m going to make a lot more music videos by myself. I have a iPhone 11 Pro Max I’m going to see if some local videographers will help but if not I still will not stop iPhone about to be smoking when I get done with it 😂😂😂🤘🏾
