By the way guys, you will get more than one OS upgrade and 4K & 120Hz refresh rate are both possible simultaneously. I've had that confirmed by my Sony contacts since pre-launch and again last week. There's a lot of misinformation out there regarding the 1 III, so please do help me get the truth out there. When you see these fake stories being peddled by KZbinrs and publishers - do feel free to correct them! I worry that people have been put off buying the 1 III, based on all these false stories...! Amen to THAT as I type this on my Xperia 1 iii...couldn't be happier with this phone. Yes, I wish the screen was a little brighter, but it is not a deal-breaker. Coming from a Note 8, having an sdcard AND headphone jack was absolutely necessary for me. I've only taken 2 pictures outside during the day - and they look fantastic - I haven't had the chance to play with the camera. My 1st phone with front facing speakers = every phone should implement this. It's worth every (USA) penny...😁! I just wish Sony had better PR because I sincerely believe they could snag a lot of Samsung/Apple customers. Just my subjective opinion 😊.

Keep in mind other phones have hidden costs such as buying dongles so that they can even use microSD cards and to use wired audio via USB C. The Xperia just has the features innately. So I'd argue it is technically cheaper with that in mind.

Though the only thing I'd love Sony to do would be to publish their software upgrade roadmap and provide 3 OS upgrades + a year of quarterly security patches on their flagship series, just like how Samsung and Google do. It's the small things and the vagueness on the futureproofing that the mainstream reporters exaggerate and discourage the buyers with. Sony should leave them no chance to do so. Fingers crossed. @@razorgcy Honestly, Xperia 1 III might be a better phone than S21 Ultra but at the same time, the S21 Ultra 256Gb could be found much cheaper during those last month( at 850 euros..so 450 euros less!!!)..Also i will probably miss the sd card on mybnext phone but could live with the trade off of not having the headphone jack and use my bothersome XM3 or other bt earbuds as well as a usbc dongle. I already have XM3 but still interested in XM4 earbuds even if their ldac seems broken or not effective yet. Ps :no wireless charging on 5 III either like 5 II.

You are completely right. When Samsung or Apple does it it's not a problem for the reviewers. But when Sony does it it's too expensive while getting extra bonuses. Also you forgot to mention qnovo battery technology which reduces degradation up to 3x now. It's the main reason I've been buying Sony devices every time. My s6e and s7e both had very bad degradation within 6 months of use. I'm using my device allot for work and also at home. To me €1300,- is too much but everything gets more expensive and if i had to choose between these 3 the 1iii gives you the most. As a multi media device the others aren't comparable. 21:9 4k hdr 120hz with front facing speakers, 3.5mm jack, dsee extreme and dvs are too many advantages

Screen brightness in Xperia 1361 outdoor Not bad and it is clearly higher than the Mark 2 and very close to the rest of the phones that reach the highest 1500 nits And in terms of the camera, if you know how to take pictures manually in the Pro app, you can take night shots with more clarity than other phones. I have night photos from my Mark 2 phone as if it were from a professional camera

Caution! You might be sorely disappointed. I have Note 10+, upgraded to Xperia 1 ii, then to Note 20 ultra. I would have liked the 1ii to be my daily driver but it didn't win me over. If you care about cameras, I bet the 1iii will be a major disappointment for you - not much difference over the 1ii. If you are used to an all-round phone experience, including cameras, like on the Note 10+, be aware that you will find much missing in the Xperia 1iii mainly because of the software. I really regret my purchase (1ii).

Thank you Tom for bringing this video out. I am so fed up with celeb youtubers who are saying its costly but at the same time they can't see extra value added features which really makes difference and it should literally cost more than other flagship. These celeb youtubers just want to lead the same narrative and without reviewing xperia properly. They are just comparing camera and that too they are not doing it fairly. E.g. they are never mentioning that xperia has superior eye af and object tracking.

I agree, to some extent. But a number of the reviewers I've seen have made the point that this is kind of a niche market phone. Which does make it _too much_ for most people (perhaps not just too much money, but too much phone), given how they use it and what they care about. And I don't think they're completely wrong. After all, one thing I've learned about my fellow Sony/Xperia users, we are *not* the average phone buyer. Our priorities aren't necessarily the same. ☞ *Sorry for the length of the comment reply. I can get annoyingly verbose. IMO talk-to-text makes it so easy.* I want Sony to succeed. So, I do hope that between having [what I feel is] poor marketing in the US, and issues like those you point out ☝️ by other reviewers, this doesn't hamper their continued success, or shut them out of the phone market. While it was new in the box, I could only afford an _Xperia XZ1_ back in November (clearly already a few years old). Ecen though it took me quite a while to save up the money, the USB C port went out on me almost two months later. And since it doesn't have wireless charging, *and* I didn't realize the seller wasn't considered an _"authorized Sony dealer,"_ I also didn't get a warranty. I'm replacing the battery in my _Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet,_ as it is still the best tablet I've used to date. It has features that most manufactures didn't include until relatively recently. 😎👍

Its multimedia capabilities are unmatched. The on screen time on my 7 years old z2 is around 6 hours. Sony means quality. My secondary phone iphone5 battery was just lasting for 3 hours on screen time after using it for 3 years.

No, it shouldn't cost more. The other companies removed those features and increased the price. Those are overpriced as well. Some of these extras are not expensive to add, like the jack. I'm looking to buy a new phone and want to return to Sony but not like this. Cameras are average. Who cares about object tracking and eye af if the details are not there and picture quality is just ok? Battery life is also mediocre. This is one of the most important things for me as I use the phone for work. I can pay £1200 for this phone but then I'll notice these drawbacks everyday. For a price like this I expect the phone to be very good at all aspects.

Agree with you 100% about the Xperia camera system and the phone as a whole being a different experience.....by design. SONY is not trying to be an iphone or a Galaxy. There is an old saying...do what you do well instead of trying to outcompete someone at what they do well. SONY is not going to out iphone the iphone. So they very wisely chose to do what SONY does well and follow a different path. Hence the different approach to the camera.....more natural colours, and manual focused. Which does allow for more creativity, and actual photography. And what's so insane about how many of these KZbinrs failure to review the camera system or usually understand it is that it's like imagine if car reviewers compared SUVs, Sedans, and sports cars as if they were built, designed and engineered for the same purposes or audience. Because that's essentially what tech reviewers do. They can't seem to understand anything that isn't trying to be an iphone, or that doesn't work like one. Or that a smartphone can be made for a different audience than what an iphone is made for (of course they don't even understand that such an audience exists). And as for "night mode" ....I'm not sure how artificially making night scenes look like daylight is a desired effect. It looks fake as hell. I get why some people like it, but it's another case of pics that don't at all look like what my eye sees.

Just got the phone couple of days ago. Free headphones to :) Things I have noticed. You can set screen 60 or 120 Hz How incredible loud you can crank up your headphones wired. The screen visibility in direct sun light it's not the brightest but it's easy to see in direct sun light(alot brighter then most of the reviews) Put on creator mode and adaptive brightness and there is no problem. How the assistant button is built impossible to have open it accidentally. The night mode is great turns on automatically but great. And cinemapro so easy to opperate. Great phone best part screen and the headphonejack, and eyeautofocus my kids aren't blurry anymore. Former Samsung and Apple user.

Yes, XPERIA is offering a 4K 120Hz display when comparing any expensive smartphones than that. S21ultra have QHD+ and the ne Snapdragon's new gaming smartphone only have fhd+display. Sony have a variable telephoto which is engineered Successfully after a hard work. But my complaint is their selfie camera sensor and recording quality. It's worse. I want to see a huge upgrade in selfie segment. I want a good brightness. I want to see all the video features in the stock app. They can keep their colour science and burst mode on their PRO apps.Still X1III is my favorite 2021 smartphone. No other smartphone nowadays are concentrating on their audio, video and multimedia segments nowadays.So, in my opinion X1III and X5III are worthfor that price as flagship devices.

I think the selfie camera needs to be better, true - and I'm convinced it will be excellent next time around. The weird thing is that I have found the mic performance to be really good on my loaner 1 III... I'll show that in the next video. Mic is far far better than the competitors in some situations. Overall great audio recording.PROs in youtube are highly recommending this device for movie recording. Tom, thanks a lot for this comparison but this is the sad part. Sony doesn't make the phone for comparison. They make the products according to what we need and what we want. Most of the people who are saying its expensive are those who have never used Sony before. I have been using Mark 2 for over a year now and boy i love it. Its actually a device for the artists. A refine piece of art like Sony Xperia 1 mark iii will be loved by all the artists like you and me and most of the people in the comments section. I have faith in Sony and their products. Hi Tom. I bought the original mark 1 but gave it back after numerous call dropping and losing reception. I read elsewhere that this problem still exists in the mark 2. I drive around a lot so definitely need something reliable in that field and wondering if any issues regarding this in the mark 3? I don't do gaming but love movies and music. I also take mainly selfies with my boy and think that the mark 3 for that price should be better at taking selfies after some of the reviews I've seen. The normal camera is very gimicky for me and I understand there's a market for some customers for it. I'm due an upgrade now and am considering the mark 3. But like yourself, am quite annoyed that the brightness is not flagship level for whatever reason. Also just wanted to ask if the mark 3 is able to watch Netflix and amazon prime in full HD? After watching a ton of videos, I drank the kool aid and picked an S21U to upgrade from my S20FE. It was an improvement but not a $600 price increase improvement. Ultimately I sent it back and now have the X 1iii on preorder. This channel was one of the key factors in my decision to go Sony. This will be my first Sony mobile phone. Hi Tom excellent, constructive video. Just got Xperia 5 mark 2 and Wh-h910n wireless headphones on new contract. Good combination, very happy,will get 1 mark 3 at a later date, when finances allow.

I was very close to do a preorder on this lovely Experia 1 III, but then I heard about the upgrades, or lack of upgrade as they are only offer one Android upgrade. Is this something you can verify? If that is true then it is a deal breaker for me. Samsung offers 3 upgrades of Android on their premium modell and 4 years of security updates. I asked if Sony offer a similare future like Samsung Dex but no one seems to know or care to answer.

Thanks for your comment and question! I spoke with Sony before the launch and you'll get better support than has been reported lately. I can confirm that this 'one OS upgrade' story isn’t true, and that Sony aims to support Xperia 1 III with the latest Android updates for two years after its launch and we expect to have Android OS updates more than once during that period. Realistically I think the Xperia 1 III will get at least two OS upgrades: Android 12 and 13. I have the first Xperia 1 and it got two upgrades: now on Android 11.

Well, I think Sony started to lose their way with the Xperia Z3, and Z3+, and then starting from the Xperia XZ1, they've been improving! (I used the Xperia Z3 a lot. It was a good phone but it introduced that oversaturated cold bluish display for that model and many other future models, and there was reliability and servicing issues. The Xperia XZ1 which I didn't buy, had a much inproved display regarding display colour accuracy.)

I love the subtle "I must be an 'enthusiast'" when talking about the camera. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think I know where that remark was directed. I have a two and a half year old P30 Pro stuck on Android 10 (albeit with EMUI 11) and I'm fighting hard not to pull the trigger and snap up the Xperia I III; however, I think I'm going wait for next year's IV. You don't even have to pay the standard price for the phone. I picked up the 10 Mark 3 in Eastern Europe for 230 euros at a summer Sale at Orange on my current 10 euro contract. With the bundled WH-CH710N headphones as well. I'd say that's a smashing price for what the package offers. The phone package itself also contains the classic in-ear wired headphones so for 230 euros I got a premium built phone, a charger (even if it is slow but it's there) and 2 sets of headphones lol. The standard price in my country for the phone is just over 400 euros. If you're in a country that the manufacturer officially sells and you don't need to import the device, no one even pays the standard price and that's for any brand.

Sadly carrier support is poor for Sony in the USA. Looks like the best way to go would be to buy the Xperia SIM-free (possibly paying monthly) and then get the SIM separately... Not as streamlined, but often better value with the right deals! Cheers, Tom 🙏
