Alistair Viegas Soccer is like a long distance race except you can take lots of walking brakes to catch your breath. In hockey you still get those nice breaks, but it's like a 1-1.5 minute sprint. Also don't forget that on skates you subconsciously use a lot more muscles in your body, making it harder.

My favorite sport is inline roller hockey (WE DON'T USE A BALL). I like it better than ice because it has all of the above, but it is 4 v 4 instead of 5 v 5, so there is more open space to favor people with speed, so it is faster and has more shooting. This makes it more exciting. Unfortunately, roller hockey is not broadcasted on television, so I watch college tournaments at a rink. I'm not a wimp or a baby because ice is more physical. Its just the 4 v 4 that I love about inline.

Hockey players may only play 20-25 minutes a game, but that's 20-25 minutes of continuous play and must play offense and defense. In football they may log 25-35 minutes but get to take a break for minutes at a time when their unit isn't on the field and they get about 30 seconds between plays for rest during the huddles. So football players may be on the field more but they stand around more than hockey players.

The NHL Legitimately could've been the number one sport but the owners and upper management of the league is terrible at marketing it. Whether that's the Lighting owner banning out door viewings or Bettman having absolutely no knowledge of what the hardcore fans enjoy. In my opinion, hockey's greatness doesn't just come from the fact that it is entertaining, fast and unpredictable as hell, or that it's an incredibly difficult sport to play with the constant movement and potential fist fights, it comes from the fact that it unites not just one or two countries, but a large number of them. It's influence carries over to Europe, from where so many players come together to play this great sport. In honesty, it unites them by creating games so entertaining and rivalries so intense, that fans from around the world want to watch the NHL, not just solely from North America. It's a game where literally anything can happen, like LA winning the cup from last place or Switzerland reaching the WC Finals. In my experience, I've bonded with people from Canada, Sweden and Finland over our mutual love for hockey and specifically (I'm Russian myself). Can the MLB or NFL do the same?

yea instead you have teams basically being named after advertisements, no salary caps or team loyalty (players just jump leagues and try to suck the most money out of it they can). Not to mention the corruption of ownerships and FIFA!!! oh goodness the flopping! The flopping!!!!! The fact that one goal most often decides a game, and a player could fake his way into a shot that has like an 80% chance of going in to determine the outcome of a game is beyond me. Soccer, or "football" is respectable for the skill required to play it, Ive watched it there are many admirable aspects to the game, and the skill can be unbelievable... but its so flawed. Ive basically seen time and time again teams that were extraordinarily inferior play way back just to run out the clock, because even if you are far better it is so difficult to score when a team basically has 11 guys in the friggin box. What teams are named after companies? I can mention 2 and both were mocked and looked down upon in the football world for it. Most teams have 100s of years of history and don't change their logo or name every few years, unlike many teams in the us. They are proud of their history and wouldn't change a thing, the team badge and colors are like the holy grail. Salary cap is retarded, if a club does good financially that's their success. The league shouldn't own the clubs. Player loyalty? A player is free to stay or move as he likes and go to wichever club he desires. Not like in the us sports where they get shipped around all their careers unless they are franchise players. The usual football player plays for 2-3 clubs during his career. Also, player like xavi, totti, messi etc who stayed in their team despite being offered twice what they made in their respective teams. In us sports they wouldn't even a able to make that decision. Oh and teams who play defensively when facing technically superior teams? Kinda like trapping in hockey? But I guess tactics and gameplans shouldn't be a part of sports or what? US sports is more of a business than it is a club and more about money than it is sports. Swedish hockey games have in no way the same breaks and advertising as the NHL. Another thing that makes hockey fast is that player substitutions can be made in the middle of play without stopping. Every other sport has to stop to allow player substitutions. It's a highly co-ordinated exercise, and you get penalized if you screw it up.

Glad he pointed out the obvious about American football. I've tried on multiple occasions to get into America's most popular sport. But I see the players just standing around for longer periods of time than the 5 seconds at a time they actually spend playing. I find curling to be more interesting than American football. As a longtime NASCAR fan, I quickly got interested in hockey because of the competitiveness of the game. The speed and precision it takes to be good at hockey is very relatable to auto racing. Funny how my favorite sports are the ones other people say aren't sports. But, American football, baseball, basketball, and fútbol are just too slow for me. They don't have the speed and excitement I enjoy in pro sports.

As an aussie i really like NHL, but the over trading and 7 game playoff style are two things i don't like. In our aussie rules, loyalty to one club is quite important. And the normal post season format (just 1 game rather than 7) makes the games far more intense and enjoyable. I don't mind some players changing teams, but it seems like 90% of players in NHL will play for multiple teams which is a bit over the top

Hockey is the one sport where refs actually are as skilled as the players. Not too mention they have very little impact on the actual outcome. Yes, there are games where they do determine the outcome, but in sports like football, basketball, baseball, and soccer the refs are always at the center of attention and several mistakes or bias calls do determine a game.

I think hockey is easily the most enjoyable sport on earth. Maybe not easiest to pick up and play, But every time I'm hanging out somewhere with sports playing hockey always seems to be the one getting the most reaction even for regular season games. Take the Rangers and Islanders off that list. Rangers the d is not good anymore, but the forwards are still good and they still have Lundqvist but I don't see them in the playoffs this season. The Islanders lost alot of depth this past season, I don't see them beating out Tampa Bay, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Florida to go to the cup. For them to go to the cup Halak needs to play out of his mind like he did in 2010, Laad has to be great and Strome as well. Also Nashville should be on that list lol instead of both teams.

I honestly don't understand y the NHL is so unpopular. The NFL is full of idiots, criminals, and bad humans. Plus compared to the NHL, American football is really slow. Run 8 second play, then 1 min break. hockey can have 10 mins or more of straight action. Plus, hockey is just as rough as football. I know NFL is so popular, but I really don't get it.
