I’ve been buying from trucks for a few years now and just being a DIY guy my dealers are excellent! They’re helpful and very candid with their responses as far as what I need vs what I was initially shopping for. With warranties, I met my snap on guy to try to rebuild some of my grandfathers old ratchets for my dad (sentimental). I just always assumed it was common courtesy to purchase something at least even before he told me it would be no charge for the ratchet repair. That man sourced parts and bits above and beyond to get those ratchets working because the kits were no longer available. It’s that kind of business and work ethic I want my money to support.

@@midatlantictools That's how I test my truck dealers right off the bat. Warranty first, and then I start to buy. If a truck dealer can't provide a service buy online. My local Snap-on truck is bad and useless. I went to the next town over and have a great Snap-on truck, but I need to go to him. I go to him once a month.

Everything you said is the truth. I experienced this all with two franchises I had in two different parts of the country. I can also see that online sales are another completion the mobile tool dealer has to deal with. Lots of people don't realize the mobile tool dealer has to pay for everything up front while getting small weekly payments from the customer. Time is money. If a shop you stop at not generating income for you then you have to refocus your time to other shops.

The tools are fronted if its Matco, Snappy or Mac. They have to buy the truck. It's a common misconception that those dealers have to buy the tools up front. My Snap on dealer straight up told me. He can't order more stuff for the truck if people don't pay him for that he owes snap on. If you have a more empty truck, your guy is loose on payment collection and just isn't as good dealer. Fuller truck - better on payment collection and a busier guy in general. This could be differnent for each franchisee or truck depending on their worth with the company and sales numbers. Correct me if I am wrong but this is the information I have been given. Why would a dealer give a shit about a small shop of 6 guys when he sits at a dealership all day and lets the mechanics funnel thru and makes bank? That small shop has to spend money when he does show up...

I worked in a shop that was a large family owned and operated fuel and propane delivery company. From the day I started I was told that no tool trucks came. I said no problem my snap on guy lives right around the corner I’ll find out when he can stop by. The foreman said no he’s not aloud. The boss wouldn’t allow tool trucks because he said the guys would spend too much time on the trucks. From my perspective the time wasted on the truck didn’t compare to not having the right tools for the job. It was so aggravating as a mechanic there because I loved having a working relationship with my tool truck guys and enjoyed being able to get info from them. Get the ad books. I didn’t stay at the job long. That wasn’t the reason I left but it made it a lot easier leaving

Most the time if the owner does not want tool trucks stop he had a bad experience with them. I had a customer ask me to come to a shop that had no toolman. I stopped in but went right to the owner and had a good conversation on what he want from me and what I wanted from him. It all worked out and we are good business friends. Thanks for your feedback..!

"If you're not buying why should he warranty your tools". This is why people think snap on dealers are scumbags. You should warranty the tools whether he's buying still or not, because he bought a lifetime warranty! You are proof that warranties are a scam. Thanking you for documenting this publicly on video. I trust Harbor Freight's warranty more than a snap on truck. And I recently bought from Tekton off Amazon and going direct to Tekton was a wonderful experience. New tool showed up a few days after I put in the claim. All Tekton required was a picture of the tool. No receipt, no name, no additional purchase. I did that just to test their warranty knowing I could send it back to Amazon. That's the way a warranty should work. Snapon plays games though. Tekton could end their warranty tomorrow though, but I warranty tools myself through cash in my pocket from money saved.

I think you miss the part about buying online but using the tool dealer for warranty only. If you bought a snappy, mac, matco etc that dealer should warranty that tool. There no scam to warranty it's always there if you have a dealer or not. thanks for watching and feedback.

@@midatlantictools I stopped by your channel and viewed as a well wisher for everyone from a time and place afar. If we had the service and support of mentors like yourself, computer literacy back then, and publications like 'Professional Distributor' from Cygnus, more of us would have prospered longer. Not to be a wet blanket, there's also an 11th reason why a toolman might bypass some shops. Zoning places the shops in socio-economic marginal neighborhoods, and when it gets dark early in daylight saving and cold weather facilitates street urchins concealing weapons in heavy clothing, its prudent to wrap the day before dusk rather than take a risk for a few more dollars squeezed from making that last call. I knew some guys who were robbed and a couple who got killed, always at the end of the day. Not just in the tool business but also in the food business servicing bodegas in the very early morning. Stay safe.

What I don’t like about snap on or Mac is that if you don’t work in a shop , you have to chase them down on the road , for new purchase or warranty , I’d buy many more tools from these retailers if I could easily find them , or know their schedule or route , so I could meet them someplace , I’m just tired of looking for them on the street or road some place , other wise good things to say about their tools

Interesting point of view. Had a rather bizarre interchange this past year. I tracked down the "local" Gearwrench Distributor. Drove 20 miles to meet him at one of his scheduled stops -- I'm not a shop & off the beaten path. Bought a couple of items, including an item he recommended that I hadn't budgeted for.( several $100 dollar total bill - paid cash). Two weeks later emailed him asking for price on two sets so I can budget for purchase during next time I meet him at his scheduled stop. - no reply. Six emails later I gave up on him. Since then I've been buying Amazon. I typically don't like that I'd rather see/feel tool rather than buy/ return. However since he was unresponsive it's Amazon. Since January he's missed $3k+ in revenue. Sometimes small guys are worth the investment.

Strange it's not like he has to come to you.. You are going to him. I have guys that come to me but I always tell them to call so we can't talk about what they need. Then I ask then to text me with the items they want so I have as a note. I don't like email as it might get lost or go to spam. Maybe that is happening to him. I would say try calling. @@djwambach6192 I would agree except, I already know what I want. So I'm not taking up his time browsing unless I'm waiting for him to finish with another customer. I asked for a price on a wrench set so when I had the cash I would met him at his normal route. During our initial meeting I purchased a serpentine belt set and was looking for a fan clutch tool (manual). He recommended an impact set and an IR hammer. Which I purchased and blew my budget for the month. Then I told him a long ratcheting wrench set (both sae & metric) was next on my list. The 2 other guys on his stop purchased a screwdriver set and had a warranty item Nuff said. End result, when possible I stop when I see a Snap-on, Matco, or Cornwell truck at a shop when I'm out to purchase items on my wish list or order via Amazon. Like I said before his loss and Bezos gain. Today's delivery: Mayhew Torx plus socket set, 2 Knipex pliers, and an EZred flex 1/4 drive ratchet & bit driver. Shopping cart: 47lbs dead blow, metric flex flare nut set, metric ratcheting stubby set - - waiting for next paycheck.

I’m watching this because I’ve been kicking around the idea of starting an independent tool truck. Lot of insight here. I’m currently a local semi truck driver but a hobby mechanic. My brother owns a shop and I go there every day after work to help out. It’s gotten to the point him or one of the guys have to call the snap on guy to get him to stop in or even chase him down and take tools to his house for warranty. When they do get him to stop his mechanics are buying tools they don’t need on payments and my brother is buying duplicates(he bought me my own set of screwdrivers this week) to try to get him to keep coming back. Soon as the guys pay him off he gets scarce again. My brother always told me the big selling point of paying tool truck money for these fancy tools was the service and warranty. Well that relationship is an abusive one. I know for a fact my brother has spent over 200k and that’s probably conservative with the same snap on dealer. He has the most epic tool collection I’ve ever seen. One of his mechanics hasn’t spent that much but has spent a great deal to. Now that they’ve spent all that money buying the tool truck “service and warranty” and they’re maxed out on tools he is reneging on his end of the deal. Really sad to see unfold. Do appreciate your honestly. He just makes up lame excuses why he couldn’t stop. Good to see it from the other side. Now that he’s sucked most of the blood out of them and all they really have is warranty work he’s the literal opposite of a loser mechanic dodging his tool payment. Maybe he has to step on good customers like that and keep chasing that fresh blood to survive. I don’t know that it’s for me. What a toxic business model for everyone involved. Well except the corporation getting rich in the background while the tool dealer is selling his morals with the false promises and the mechanic selling his financial future to buy it. Nasty nasty business
@midatlantictools
@midatlantictools 11 ай бұрын
And that is why I'm an independent now and not with a corp. I have done more sales and stocked more tools being on my own. I have never meet a max out tech. There are new / updated tools being made all the time. Just this week VIM came out with some new tools. Sounds like that dealer is looking for the easy sale. No one should have to buy doubles to keep a tool truck coming in. But lets just say the shop haves every tool and only needs warranty. That is just a phone call away and the dealer does not need to stop every week. If the dealer does not show up well then they are just lazy. Remember part of the service when your brother was buying was making the payments when he needed to. The payments keep the tool dealer on the road. If the dealer is not selling and collecting he will be out and at that point on one is getting the “service and warranty”.. This was a great comment and does show how both sides depend on each other. Thanks for watching..!

Question: is there a way for a member of the public (not a tech) to buy from a tool truck? Or is that forbidden? I tried once to buy a Snap On tool, and left repeated messages for the Snap On guy, never a call back. Eventually gave up, and bought this tool from a competitor brand. I was prepared to meet the truck whenever, wherever. Guess my money wasn't worth his time.

And the snap on guys are pretty cool about us usually coming in just to browse around and bs for a little bit ( only 2 guys me and one other in the shop) and maybe buy something that we want. Given in the marine industry it’s just a lot of dealer/ brand specialty tools and most of the stuff we buy it’s just cool stuff we think is neat or what have you. And every now and again we buy an expensive tool bc we need it or we want it. I make sure to keep a recurring tab with the guys so all are happy and it works out. I think a huge part of it is just talking to the dealer and getting a bond or friendship started and an understanding on the situation. Our factory used to have the tool truck come out for our mechanics years ago and apparently there were issues with the dealer honoring warranties and poor customer service. Got to the point where the plant manager got involved. He banned the tool truck and started giving a tool allowance to all the mechanics. Our plant is like 10 acres so we are pretty big facility. Don’t really know whose fault it was but all the drama stopped shortly afterwards.

My only disagreement (a tech's perspective) with anything said is warranty. The tool is warrantied by the company and as a company rep any warranty should be respected, no questions asked. Saying you will stop warranting tools because guys have already bought everything they need and you don't sell enough? You've already sold it all! Saying you don't get a warranty b/c the tool guy is new and your warranty was with the old guy? Not even close to an option. Won't warranty a paid-for tool b/c a new tool isn't fully paid for. Again, not an option. I understand that you walk a fine line between your employer and your customer. I understand you're on the receiving end from both sides. It's not my problem. You charge 6-10X more than anyone else in the biz. Sort it out at the corporate level and don't bitch to me about how it's an inconvenience for you to warranty items you didn't sell. It's not my problem. I've paid the money and i expect the service i paid for. The number one reason i don't buy any given item off the truck is b/c i don't trust the service/warranty. I failed to buy some stuff i needed last week b/c the guy didn't show up. My loss or his? I don't know, but he's out money and i'm out tools. It's simply not reliable. Too many horror stories from old timers in the shop waiting years, buying new tools to replace ones already paid for when nobody shows up, especially for the cost. At the end of the day the price being asked doesn't match the service being promised and it doesn't matter the reason to the customer. It's simply a broken promise, and while i'm sure the lawyers have the wording of their contractual warranties sewed up tight, to most folks it's known as fraud.

It does cost the dealer money. One way is if there is an update to the tool. If a dealer replaces that tool with an updated one and send back the older tool he/she may only get credit for the older tool. Ex. Updated tool cost $2.00 the older one was only $1.75 when new. Dealer talks the .25 lost. Another way it cost the dealer is shipping. Sending back tools the dealer pays for shipping not the tool manufacture. And here I am trying to get a tool guy, to even stop by so I can give him business. As a retired mechanic, I still have need for tools, warranty, ect for my personal use. Biggest issue I hear is they believe a non shop buyer can be a viable income or customer long term. The tool truck business is cutthroat and hard to succeed...I couldn't imagine cutting your own throat if there is potential customers out there you're overlooking trying to hit big shops. I have talked to many tool truck guys and they ALWAYS complaining about not selling enough to pay their truck bills and losing business because many shops are losing business and mechanics are either leaving or come and go. Many guys are starting to gravitate to Harbor Freight because there is always a store nearby and warranty is a non issue, and their ICON SERIES is rivaling many of the big 4. I love my Snap On and MAC..but if I can't get them to visit me...I have no option but to look at alternative methods to get my tools either online or a local business I can patronize. As a mechanic and business owner, I have tossed the idea of creating my own tool truck business that will cater to anyone who needs tools, wether it's a big shop, little shop, or just a DIY guy working from home. No particular brand loyalty but able to provide whatever they need, when they need it at anytime day or night, self financed.

I mean I buy from tool trucks I get on the truck I know what I want when I go on the truck order it and gtfo I don't buy a lot a peice here and there like a speciality item.and always pay cash.

No it's not the end of story. As I said in the video if guys are buying online or someplace else why should the dealer pay money to warranty their tools? They can warranty from where the bought the tool from. Over the year I have warranty tons and tons of tools I never sold but the guys also see the value of my help and help me out by supporting me. Just like you do by buying peices here and there. Thanks for the feedback and watching

You video is dead on. Been a Diesel mechanic for 21 years. Have seen it all. I started out buying snap on. I had bad credit at the time. Paid cash for tools for 1 year. Then the snap on guy co-signed 25k in tools and a box. Paid it off in 3 years. Worked at lot of 6 days a week to pay it off. Drove me nuts when guys would say. “ Snap on guy did not show up. I don’t have to pay him” . It does not work that way. I have had other mechanics show up on our property and walk on the truck. That’s the worst thing you can do. Had to kick off a few guys off the truck. Almost got in a fight over it. Make a phone call or text the snap on guy to meet you in a parking lot. Seen guys demand warranty and never buy anything. I would buy something 100 bucks then ask for warranty. Now I just ask the young kids out of tech school to warranty my tools. That’s the easiest thing to do. I don’t buy tools anymore the last 5 years. I have no desire at 47 to buy a new Snap on box. My last one was purchased in 2003. I helped my snap on guy repo a few boxes over the years. I don’t know how they stay in business anymore. Most of the new guys buy HF boxes or Home Depo. Then they buy Amazon tools.

9 times out of 10. You and yours don’t buy sh!t! If they can’t make a certain amount per month they not coming. you don’t have to remortgage your house, buy one tool at a time and before you know it you have a nice tool collection. If you can’t spend $50 a week on your trade you’re doing it wrong and need to rethink your current situation. I have many tools that I use for one fastener or one angle of alignment for one specific brand or model. When you have it you’ll save time and make more money depending on your employer. It’s that simple.

I have a 100,000 in snap-on tools in a very large area and we don't have a dealer FL. Area .I will never buy a snap-on tool again because if you don't have a dealer you got no warranty . Too add I would sale all my snap-on tools and replace them with harbor freight junk if I could get replacement.

That is a problem when you don't have a dealer. You can mail your broken tools back to Snappy so you still have a warranty just not the sevice of the warranty (still sucks). When buying tools buying non-rebrand is the best way to go. Any good tool dealer that you do business could warranty for you. Thanks for watching and feedback. Hope you get a Snappy dealer soon..

I'm not paying shipping for a warranty, the reason why I bought this product is because it was easily replaced, the snap-on company is failing them selves.

The tool trucks sale premium tools usually made state side with lifetime and grandfather warranties. Very nice tools compared to most store bought tools. And you the option to make payments on everything they offer. it’s easy to get ultra premium tools with little to no money. Yes you get a tool without paying for it that day.

@@MrJaman0083 I mean, to be fair noone makes much state side anymore, most of them seem to be available in actual stores and I have no idea what you mean by "ultra premium". There are actual industrial grade tools out there that are better and more expensive that both matco and snapon. Besides, just because we dont have tool trucks here doesnt mean we dont have warranties or good tools readily available. Im just fascinated by how unique the whole concept is

I tried to let the Snap-On man know if I wasn’t going to buy anything. I’d look at the weekly specials and when nothing caught my interest or I didn’t specifically need anything I’d tell him straight up. Anytime spent bullshitting was on him then. I worked at 1-2 man shops for years and he followed me around town as I moved around. Matco man on the other hand, came out once and never saw him again. Mac and Cornwell was nonexistent in my area.

@@midatlantictools what do you mean ? When you buy the brand name ,,you would assume that where ever you go as long as you own the tool .the dealer ethically should warranty it ,so to say if you bought a tool & end up at a different shop a different dealer is going to deny service ,because you did not buy from him .So the Original seller made his money 💰 .Now the me Janice is S.O.L at the dealers discretion that's why I stopped buying Rebrands from tool trucks ..not even made in USA
@midatlantictools
@midatlantictools 2 жыл бұрын
If you watch the video I said, If no one is buying tools at a shop and only want warranty the dealer might not return. Never said anything about denying warranty. The video is about why a dealer might not come back to a shop. It cost dealer money to warranty tools and DO NOT get reimbursed for shipping. Also tools on the tool truck or anywhere you are buying them from are made all over the world.

My experiences with the tool trucks has been mostly positive....a lot has to do with the dealers attitude and willingness to be flexible. Case in point is a guy wanted full price for some used harbor fright ratchets and wouldn't budge on the price, even when shown the price on the website. Mebbe he got screwed on them and wanted to pass on the screwing, mebbe not. Needless to say, i have 2 other trucks coming by where i work and they aren't assholes.

Here’s the other side. I have been doing this 30 years. I have all the basic hand tools I need. So I’m not going to buy wrenches and sockets and screwdrivers every month just because that’s what the dealer wants to sell. I need specialty tools for whatever I’m working on at the time. My dealers never have them and have no interest in even trying. I’m not going to pay an outrageous markup and wait weeks for a tool truck to order online and resell to me. It’s an outdated business model.
@midatlantictools

I always hear people say " It’s an outdated business model" but here I'm 20 years sell tools from a tool truck. I can match or beat online prices for customer like you who like to pay in full. For customer who want to have payment and a live person sevice some feel the markup is worth it. As for "specialty tools" your dealer is not giving you the full service sorry for that. Thanks for your feedback and watching.

one reason might be that employers pay their staff so little that they cannot afford to buy overpriced tools. this is not a complaint on the tool distributor, it is a complaint on the employers.

The tool truck will come to your shop but after you spend a lot of money over time and tool up and when your buying slows down the truck stops. Then getting service/warranty for the stuff you bought will be hard. I would rather go to lowes/homedepot/harbor freight then to chase the tool truck down all day or call the manufacture and wait for shipping. The tool trucks lock up so much territory. They then start servicing only the large shops and stop servicing the small shops in their territory leaving no room for other tool truck owners to come in and service the small shops. If you are a small shop and depend on your tools and for them to be functional to make a living the tool truck is no longer the best option.

I understand what you are saying about tool truck stopping but I don't know one person without a cell phone. I never understand why some feel it's so hard to send a text or call. Now if you do and then they tool truck does not show up then yes that just sucks.. As for territory with tool trucks most flag trucks (snappy, mac, matco, etc) can only have up to 325 customers. They should be going to see every customer but if no one is buy you can understand why they stop coming by. Thanks for your feedback and watching. There some good points in your post..

I own a tool truck and can tell you that some of my small shops are my best shops. It's not just the size of the shop that matters, to me it's good customers vs time it takes at said shop, and small shops are almost always significantly faster stops than big ones.

@aztecducky I like my snappy tools but when you need a tool it's just a pita to get. The alternatives are a click away last hand tool i got was at my door on the same day with prime. Calling or textimg snappy dealer for the same bluepoint badged tool would have taken days to arrive or never because small order out of his way. In today's get it now mindset tool truck days are limited. Customer, I need a tool, Tool truck dealer i can order it for you. Be here in a week or two lol. Customer I can order it to.
