I am currently an English teacher with the EPIK program, which is the 'English Program in Korea,' which means I teach ESL in the public schools. There are also private academy (Hagwon 학원), international schools, and university positions as well. So most of these reasons will apply!

Hi! I am applying to teach in Korea and your vids have been so helpful! But I did have a question. So I just submitted my application yesterday to Korean Horizons, my recruiter, and they have sent my app to EPIK the last time I've heard. I've picked Daegu as my first preference location, but I'm really wanting to change it to Seoul because aside from teaching, I really hope to get involved in community organizations and ministry groups that I find much more prevalent in Seoul. Would this hurt my chances of even getting in now if I tell them I want to change from Daegu to Seoul?

All great reasons. I came back to teach after doing an exchange program at Yonsei University in Seoul. I took pre-modern Korean history, Korean culture and the cultural wave, and East Asian Cinema. Through those classes as well as my time at language exchanges I just fell in love with the culture, language, and people. After graduating later that year, I had returned the next year with EPIK. Here I am~ 5 years after that study experience and I'm still loving Korea.

I taught English as a second language in China and it is by far the best thing I have ever done. This is an awesome video! Very motivating and encouraging! I’ve actually just finished my degree and completed an online TEFL course in preparation for teaching in Korea, but now that it’s come down to the crunch, I’m having second thoughts. Because I’m a bit shy, I’m scared I won’t be a good enough role model and teacher for the kids to want to continue to learn English and I’m worried that the work load may be too much for me. But hearing you say that your comfort zone is the killer has given me something to think about so thank you Cedric!

The last point is key.. the comfort zone I love getting people fired up about stepping out and shifting their perspective. We are so lucky to have a chance to work and make money, while broadening our global perspective and challenging ourselves. Hey Shelly! Sweet, let's connect when you get here. I'm glad to hear that you are taking your Korean studies seriously :) How much longer until you get your degree? I would say as you are finishing it up, you can begin looking into different TESOL or TEFL certifications that meet the EPIK requirements (that is, if you want to teach in the public schools). The private academies sometimes doesn't require the teaching certificate, but it's always a plus if you have it. As of now, a 100-hr minimum course is required, and you can knock it out online! That way, you'll have the certificate by the time you have your degree ~ then you can apply for teaching positions.

Cedric, it would be an honor to connect with a fellow Halfie while I am in Korea :) And yes I have been dying to learn Hangul and finally decided to find a class and just see what happens... I am however finding the class pace to be a tad fast for me so I have downloaded a few different apps on my phone that have been helpful in my studies! Now as far as schooling goes I have a ways to go as I have just been working full time for awhile. I have honestly been inspired by your videos and channel on this whole self discovery journey which has also landed me where I am now with the desire to go back to school. School never came easy for me which is why I have always been hesitant to start back but I feel like now is a good time to conquer my fears and try for the best! Oh and fun fact in my Korean class part of our HW was to come up with a Korean name so with the help of my Korean friends my official Korean name is ㅁ니ㅏ :) I love the name because my Birth Mothers family name was “Mi” meaning beautiful so it just kind of fit and really makes me feel more connected to my Korean roots!

That's very inspiring and I'm happy that you are taking those steps in learning the language, which will unlock more understanding of the culture. It will be challenging but you got this :) Many people don't know this, but I actually finished my undergrad in 2014 at 29 years old. And my main intention for going back to school to finish was so that I could be able to teach English in Korea (which didn't happen until this year haha). So i can totally relate to you! You can do this!

Speaking for EPIK, they can hire up to the age of 62. I've seen a few teachers in their 40s and early 50s in my Spring 2018 intake. I also met someone who was 21 from my intake as well. So as long as you meet the requirements, age shouldn't be an issue. Private academies probably won't hire beyond 62 as well.

Another assuring thing to keep in mind is "home is just a plane ticket away"..if you end if in a bad situation at a hagwon for example...@skycedi in your time in Korea so far have you heard/know of people doing "midnight runs"? Great video btw as always, thanks.

That's very true. And I've heard of a few people doing midnight runs and actually know of one person who did one near the beginning of this semester.
