As you said Sharks traded for Karlsson because their core Thornton, Marleau, Burns, and Pavelski was getting old. So getting 2x Norris winner in the hope of pushing for the Stanley Cup was the correct thing to do. I don't know any fanbase who would be willing to say "Instead of going for the title with [insert the core players], let's not resign them and/or trade them and start our rebuild now".
