Found decent copy of Maggot Brain $2 at a flea market. This guy's an old record store owner, he has one section of the store with vg+ stuff priced from discogs etc, but then has a loss-leader bin out front to attract buyers. Most of it is run of the mill VG- stuff, but every once in a while there's a high value record that he didn't spot?. Or maybe he figures us collectors will look through all that junk and might pick up a few extra if he buries a treasure in there sporadically? It seems like every 500 records I go through, I find a gem.

Whenever I watch your videos and hear your stories, I think of two things: 1.) I want to dig through all my old LPs, and 2.) While I am not a record collector, I AM a collector of pre-1980 paperback books and have similar "horror" stories regarding the digging in filthy basements, weird characters, shady deals, etc. Always love watching your videos.

I went to my local antiques mall a couple of years ago, and I found some really cool records. I found a Taiwanese pressing of ELO’s “Time”, an obscure Asian pressing of the Cars “Candy-O”, and a 2009 German reissue of Amon Düül II’s “Phallus Dei”.

Today, I went to a local antique mall. They have several large record areas, most of them being overpriced to death (think frampton comes alive for 30 bucks), but upstairs are two bins that I swear are a gift from god. Flipped through them and saw so many incredible clean sleeved copies of decently uncommon records all for 10-15$... And in the back I found it. My quest was over. A German side 1 RL Hot Mix LZ2 in VG/VG+ for a decent price. I'm still over the moon about it. Such a worthwhile pressing type to get. The difference is 100% there and it's worth it to look for. But anyways, it's a lesson. Even if the place is usually overpriced or you aren't sure if there are records there, always check! You never know what you might find.

Someone I know brought me a bag of records that they found in the skip behind the library. The library had thrown them out because they all had their sticker on the corner. It was original UK Miles Davis, Coltrane and other Jazz records all in great condition. Also someone I know found a record buried in the corner of a barn on a farm in the middle of nowhere completely covered in dust and I cleaned it up, it was a bit water damaged but played fine. It was an original UK The Who sell out, which was pretty cool.

I used to mow lawns as a teenager. One of my regulars had her garage door open one day and I saw a bunch of records in there. We worked out a deal and I got some in exchange for the work. One of them was a Quadraphonic copy of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". I kept it as my play-copy for a few years, then sold it for $75 once I figured out what Quad LPs were. One of the first albums I sold on eBay in 2000 or so and I'm still going strong after 22 years!

My hang-out back in the day was House of Records (opened 1971 - still in business) out here in Eugene. The guys that worked there said go dumpster diving when the semester ends at the University of Oregon when everybody moves out. Sounded disgusting to me, so I can only dream of what I missed out on. Live and learn, except for me in that instance.

I used to love going to garage sales for records. I remember finding a copy of the "Three Days" b/w "Stop" 12'' single by Jane's Addiction which was pretty cool -- it was my first Jane's single and I've since been slowly finding more ("Been Caught Steeling" box, et cetera), but that first one was a special find.

I found out about Lightnin Hopkins by checking out Lps from the Newark Public Library. John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry/Brownie McGee. I had already been into Robert Johnson from my Record store Clerk job in a small towns Mt. in the mid 80’s. Never got much culture beamed into through the airwaves, but I began reading about everything I had missed. Then in late 80’s during my college years, CDs had taken over lps and I had a mish-mash shop that I bought 20 records a month for 20 bucks for about 2years. That was some golden years of happenstance and gold striking vinyl.

My oddest finds.... non peeled Beatles butcher block for 2 bucks at a yard sale .... about 20 78 rpm records in a Christian thrift store , all were 30s and 40s x rated party records and one kkk record on some home town label from the mid west dated 1927 . Long Klucker b side Klucker in the Rain . Odd place for that record stash .

I found a Decca wideband sitting on the sidewalk in NYC, on 6th Avenue between 12th and 13th street. It was only the Britten Peter Grimes Highlights, but it was in nice shape, and it was the original 1962 original pressing, 'Made in England' at 6 o'clock.

I’ve got a few stories of epic scores, they’re becoming rarer and rarer. One of my personal favorites was a mono promo Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers LP all by itself in a massive collection of TRASH records. The dude just let me have it when I told him it was the only thing I wanted. Another was a Here Is Barbara Lynn LP for $1 at a pawn shop. Also a nice stack of Phil Spector records at a thrift store in Bisbee AZ for $4 each, including Crystals, Ronettes and the Christmas Album.

Since having records were very common like the albums everyone had at one time when new, many were thrown out when cds came in the market. But since it was common for everyone to have a record player at home and like having a tv, there are still tons out there to be found and forgotten. Also, most ppl. don’t even know ppl are looking for them and have more value. So before it turns into a solid collecting thing, like comics, vintage toys, sports cards, these are the times to go out there looking and get it for cheap.

A couple years ago we were having a yard sale. Guys would drive by and yell out their windows asking if we had any albums. Neighbor across the street heard one of the passers by and told me he a box of albums in his garage that were there when he moved in. He asked if I wanted them or wanted to sell them for him. He pulled out a bankers box full of Grateful Dead , Pink Floyd, Donavon, and other misc titles. Covers were dirty with some minor water damage but the vinyl was perfect. Great video and stories!!!

Great video I love hearing stories about finding great records and your stories are awesome. I'm a fairly new record collector and I have a few bootlegs but nothing too rare, one is Black Sabbath Paranoid world tour 1970 on a blood red record. My dad owns a record store in Vancouver BC and he is the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to records. He knows all the record store owners in and around Vancouver and he always talks about a certain Led Zeppelin bootleg called PB Blues, it was recorded in Vancouver in the early 70's and the sound quality is so good that most people think whoever made it plugged right into the bands sound during the concert. He's had it a few times but I don't live in Vancouver so I've actually never seen or heard it but it is my holy grail bootleg and one day I hope to find it. great videos man I always look forward to watching.

Two years ago my wife and I visited the Holy Land and on our last full day there, we were in a town just south of Tel Aviv called Jaffa. I buy a lot of CDs (I've got 6,400+) but buying them was not on my mind that day. But there in the center of Jaffa was a flea market and this guy had 5,000+ CDs on tables. Looked thru quickly but when he told me he had another 50,000 at home for sale, we agreed that I would finish my sightseeing, then return to his stall where at 5pm, we'd go over his house. All looking good until I broke a tooth while having lunch and had to go off to find a dentist! File that under "missed opportunities"!

I've found lots of $$$ vinyls after it's been 'picked over', mainly because most buyers are looking for the common records. It can be useful to have had it ''picked over'' as the seller assumes the 'good stuff' has gone and you get others even cheaper.

That's where I'm at. I already have the popular albums, I want those 1989-1990 rare vinyl, but still cheap because they're considered the artists low point. Right now all I need is Queens Hot Space ( their worst album) to complete my discography. Luckily, I was smart enough to grab Made In Heaven new back in 95, cause it's a fortune now. Yesterday I found Todd Rundgrens Nearly Human from 89, mint for a buck. Most want Faithfull, somethingAnything, runt etc. I don't mind picked over, what I hate is looking through thrift store Mitch Miller / Manilow stuff for the billionth time. Not that it stops me, I go thrifting everyday and come out with decent stuff sporadically.

Recently dug through the personal collection of a guy who runs a little antique shop. He was a classic rock guy so plenty of ACDC, Alice Cooper, etc, and then an OG US press of Ege Bamyasi by Can. Cut corner, he thought it was a Canned Heat album. Unfortunately, has a 2 inch crack in it. I still paid the $1 and played it anyways, my stylus survived.
