tesla thought electricity should be free and came up with a way to make it so (i believe he came up with the concept for solar power or wind turbines i'm not sure which) that everyone could have free electricity also he made an electric car. The government had as is still does monetary interests in coal and oil so they couldn't have people thinking they could have anything for free nor did they want oil to become obsolete that would mean less money for their pockets. Also edison was their man he stole tesla's inventions and sold them leaving tesla broke and was fine with charging people for electricity.
