But lately, he's starting to be scared of me lol and like when I have food, he will look at me with his beautiful eyes. I adopted a "non-adoptable" cat (my favorite kind) from a shelter. She had been raised by her mom under a bridge and never had any human contact. I brought her home and no lie, it took one YEAR for her to let me pet her. I never tried to make her pay attention to me. But one day, I was sitting on my bed, petting my other cat and she was on top of the closet, watching. My other cat walked away and she jumped down from the closet onto the bed, walked right over and let me pet her. We were best friends after that. :)

@@roxannesmith9219 Well thanks but it was up to her. lol I figured if she wanted to live with me for the rest of her life, never having contact with me, that was okay. And she was in LOVE with my other cat, so she had "family." And then she adopted me into her family. lol

This is true! A couple months ago, I was outside working on some things for the race car. I noticed one of the neighborhood ferals watching me from a distance. Thought nothing of it really, since ferals tend to be very solitary. Later that afternoon, I was sitting in a lawn chair when that same feral came very close to me. I reached down and he backed away for a second. Next thing I knew, he was bunting me and inviting me to pet his head. Then he started purring and "asking" for more attention. He even followed me on to the porch and proceeded to stretch out on the steps and take a nap. At that moment, I felt like that I had just been "adopted" by this feral cat. What a cool feeling! This guy hung around my place for a few weeks. I would come home from work and there he would be on the steps, napping away, waiting for me to come home. Sometimes he even wanted to come in the house, but I wasn't quite ready to let him in yet. i think animal control might have come through the neighborhood or something. One day I noticed that my feral feline friend was not coming around anymore. Also noticed that most of the ferals around the neighborhood seem to be gone. I miss him, but for a couple of weeks, I was his "adoptee", and I will not soon forget him.

Then one day she came into the living room and say next to me. Then on my lap. I was talking to her softly, then the cutest thing happened - she reached up and touched my face. She then curled up on my lap and purred as I petted her. From that moment on we were best buds! She lived until she was 15😘😥

I closed the garage door in her, and gave her some chicken gravy. She allowed me to pet her for a good while. When she learned I was friendly I opened the door to let her know she’s free to leave. She left with a full belly and content. Never saw her again but that next day there was a baby that looked similar to her in my U-Haul probably 3 weeks old at most. She’s my partner now healthy and adventurous. I had never seen other kittens my theory is they died due to malnutrition from a mother that couldn’t provide and she brought me the last one in hopes that I would take her in as my own. I love her so much and I miss her mom. I feel blessed every time I spend time with her. I think, what a lot of people miss, is that you use a lot of the same strategies for all animals. The way you approach a dog or a cat is actually remarkably similar, but dogs tend to be bred to be gregarious, so they're more willing to forgive breeches in etiquette. Letting the animal come to you, moving calmly, and respecting the animal's space will usually make you popular with both dogs and cats.
@JaneXemylixa Жыл бұрын
That worked with a puppy of a friend I stayed with a couple years ago - he was very sheltered but friendly once he got over it. I used the cat approach simply bc that's basically all I know. Within a day he was happily napping in the same room as me, and then started a tradition of coming up to my armchair and dropping his head on my lap to be scritched. He still has problems (mostly bc his owners' hands are pretty full and he's not given enough socialization) but I got the honor of being his first non-owner human fren
@devilsoffspring5519 Жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed that. Dogs are indeed very gregarious which is why so many people like them. They're super-friendly and will happily slobber all over you and try to hump your leg a couple minutes after meeting you :) Cats are stand-offish at first and they spook very easily. When meeting a new human a cat's primary concern is whether or not we're going to try to eat it.
@TheLolrider Жыл бұрын
@@devilsoffspring5519 I'm not sure how to say this kindly, but I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how these animals work. Yes, dogs do trend towards being more outgoing, but dogs are not a monolith, and assuming that all dogs are happy to see you, especially when you are a potential invader in their home (remember, dogs are also bred and trained to be fiercely defensive) is a great ticket to the ER. I'm glad you've had largely positive experiences with dogs in the past, truly, but you can't afford to take for granted the way these animals will react in any situation, even dogs you have a lot of experience with.
@devilsoffspring5519 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLolrider You're probably right, in my 46 years I've just always noticed that dogs are almost always ready to slobber all over you and cats are always waiting to maul you :) I love cats, they're lovable little ones but VERY feisty and aggressive if they don't know you and trust you. Cats spook more easily than dogs do around people they don't know.

@sunnyfields18453 жыл бұрын
I regularly use the nose-to-hand touch and I promise it works wonders. I get more positives when I pet them post a cheek rub than going and trying to pet them. If I go to pet the cat even if they turned away, they will indeed try to leave. They like their personal space, and even the ones that love you enjoy a friendly nose-to-hand touch and be able to decide to engage or not. Works best if you turn your side or back to an unfamiliar cat as you hold out your hand. Edit: don't hold prolonged eye contact, and instead if you manage to catch their gaze blink slowly. That's a cat's way of saying "I like you and I trust you." Don't be offended if they don't blink back; sometimes they get irritated if you do it too many times in a row, or if you're a stranger they won't yet trust you.

Watching this video I now realize how special my bond is with my kitty. Not only do I talk with her but she responds back to me accordingly. I recieved her prematurely and had to feed her through a dropper. I work from home and live alone so it's been constant interaction for 3 years now. She is a chantilly breed and lives up to it. If you ask her a question She makes a trill noise in a inflection like a human does when they say question someone. I swear she knows what I'm going to do before I do it no joke. We even enjoy intoxicants together. She loves the nip and I love the bud. When ever I take her outside to my mom's farm she will act like a dog and not leave my side and will answer to her name. It is actually possible to safely pet some cats' bellies. You just need to take it slow and listen to their body language. If they show their belly, start with cheek scritchies, then move down to gentle chest rubs between their forelegs. If they don't like it, they'll push your hand away, normally quite gently. If they don't push you away, you can move a little further down until you're rubbing the belly. Just go slow and gentle, and listen when they talk. I'm owned by four cats; two of them refuse belly rubs, one occasionally accepts them, and one absolutely adores them and will sprawl out begging for belly rubbins regularly.

It could be that you have the scent of a dog on you, or maybe they can sense that you are nervous. Animals have a hard time feeling safe if they sense tension, either in your voice or your smell. My mom used to say "If they don't trust/know you it makes they think you might be plotting something, and they get defensive". From my own experiences so far, I have to agree. It's not your fault of course, but since you became afraid of cats in general it now turned into a big vicious cycle. I'm not the best person to give advice on that, but maybe when you try again bring someone that feels super comfortable around cats? Having someone to assure and give you tips might help to make you feel more relaxed and confident bit by bit, and by extension the cats too.

If the cat feels comfortable, affectionate, and trusting of a person then they will often enjoy and not mind those things, but if you haven't established a proper bond with that cat yet then the cat is more likely to be uncomfortable and get stressed from rear and especially belly rubs. When I get home from gym, and I’m a bit sweaty, my cat wants to just hug me and be held by me for at least 20 minutes. She will be waiting for me as I come in and will climb me like a tree if I don’t pick her up. I love it.

So I just recently adopted a 1-yr-old Siamese kitty & I've read a lot about caring for her & about 50% of these videos say not to pet over the tail area & the other 50% say cats love it. My cat loves it. I'll let her guide me as to where she's comfortable. She also loves to head-butt my hand. I love her.

While petting a long stroke from head to tail can get a cat to raise it's backend for a few strokes in that area.

My cat absolutely loves being scratched on the forehead the most. Also one thing this video missed is placing your hand on the cats body and not moving it. It will make them feel more calm. I learned that from Jackson Galaxy.
@rabbyd5424 жыл бұрын
I have a cat like that. It was overstimulating him to be "pet" and he would scratch and bite me. I learned to just "pat" him for a small amount of time. He is a lot more calm now but I think it's because I take it easy and don't pet him too much.

Another tip is to sit cross legged in front of a cat. They perceive this gesture as friendly and lessen their intimidation and anxiety. I saw this tip in another video and tried it and OMG, the feral cat I’ve been feeding outside my house came up a LOT closer to meet to eat the treats I set down beside me after showing signs of being unsure when I was sitting with my bum down and one leg bent and the other extended. Cross legged sitting is KEYs for them coming closer to you….

A relationship with a dog is like having a dependent child. A relationship with a cat is much more like forming an equal friendship. You likely will have to earn the friendship with a cat by being mutually respectful. Cats are not fully domesticated like dogs are so the relationship is quite different from that with a dog.

More like a relationship with a cat is learning to be a good sub or bottom
@scottmcmaster49273 жыл бұрын
@@Blatantlyrude No. Its just far more like forming a relationship with an independent equal because Cats are not fully domesticated. Dogs on the other hand have been bred for blind obedience for many thousands of years. They are like a dependent offspring and they offer a blind loyalty similar to that of a dependent small child. Short of cases of extreme abuse a dog will unconditionally offer blind love. Having a relationship with more of an independent equal being does not require one to be subordinate, but it does require development of trust and reciprocation of kindness. You have to work for that relationship a bit more with a cat, the same as you have to put in effort to maintain any reciprocal relationship. Trying to sexualize the topic is a bit disturbing, even if it was meant as a joke.
@Alphasnowbordergirl3 жыл бұрын
That's because unlike dogs, cats came into human lives on their own so.. yeah nothing has changed.
@scottmcmaster49273 жыл бұрын
@@Alphasnowbordergirl Actually it's because cats have not been fully domesticated to the extent dogs have been. The early ancestors of modern dogs did enter into partnership with early humans of their own accord. These dog ancestors approached human camps to scavenge scraps and bones we left as waste. In return tolerating their presence provided hunter gatherer humans an early warning system for dangers and a deterant to other animals. Over time the mutually beneficial relationship grew to the point that the animals could be tamed and purposefully bred for tait's we desired, such as tracking, hunting, obedience, and protection and even work such as sleigh pulling. Cats on the other hand have been allowed to remain semi-wild throughout their history even with what breeding we have performed. Mostly kept for rodent and pest control and companionship, they have often been. Allowed to roam free even as pets.

Same. I take it a step further though, I start telling humans why their cats act the way they do (like negative/aggressive/shy etc) and it's most of the time the human's fault. Ergo, having two cats, feeding them next to each other when one eats really fast and is a bully and will push the other cat away to get at it's food. Huge behavior changes happen when you just put the cats in separate rooms to eat. The more submissive cat becomes less submissive and shy and the bully becomes less of a bully because they realize it's pointless. Then frequently that cats will actually start liking each other more. Sadly, it takes ongoing checkins with the family to make sure they are continuing the changes and MOST of the time they aren't. Then of course there is clawing and teeth/getting overly aggressive while playing with your hands... it's such an easy behavior to fix with kittens. You gently swat back, push on their paw pads etc etc while saying, "ouch, no claws /teeth" The physical part is same type of feed back they get from their litter mates and vocal part gives them the words you can just say "ouch" or "claws" later on. All of my cats as a kid rarely ever used claws and we got pretty rough with them in play with our hands. I lost track of how many times they'd be on their backs, I'd be rubbing their bellies in playful way (not petting) and they'd playful buck at my hand with all 4 paws. Then I'd remove my hand and they'd lay there still on their backs, legs wide open staring at my face AND hands.. then I'd put my hand back down and repeat the play. The staring was them obviously going, "uh wait, why did you stop?" More so because if I DID stop,they'd finally get up and demand more play in other ways. The behavior they did when they didn't want to play was obvious, they'd be faster with their swating/bucking at my hands, push the hand away or if they got really annoyed, push the hand away and flip back over and walk away. Or hiss etc. Cats are seriously open books with their emotions hehe.
