Ironically, the 1972 Gran Torino's top engine was not the 429 with its anemic 209hp, but rather the option with the 245 hp 351 Cleveland.

...and you can make them perform fast enough for your liking pretty easily. And sort of cheaply. A modern 5 or 6 speed overdrive transmission and high numeric rear gears is pretty straightforward.

Yes power was down in 1972, but you neglect to mention that in 72, horse power was measured differently. In 72 all horse power rating were now measured in net hp, not gross hp

The downside of the "emissions " compliant engines lower compression , emission cylinder heads, more restrictive exhausts, much less aggressive camshafts and premium leaded fuel was 101-104 octane while the octanes dropped several points for unleaded fuel. S.A.E Net ratings were done differently than Gross Horsepower Ratings. The engines were measured under full accessory load on the dyno.

When the muscle car wars were getting started in the 50s 300 horsepower was the baseline. A car with 300 horsepower can haul ass. And while the first Grand Nationals were paltry they had that tuned up pretty well by the mid-80s. But, yes, 1971 was the end of the era. The government that gives all it promises must take (or regulate) all to do it

Every engine on this list was easily upgraded by 100 HP with bolt on speed parts. Especially the BBC stuff.

One thing nobody ever mentions about this era of performance cars is the fact that rear end gear ratios were severely tamed. By the time 72 or so rolled around, gone were 4.11s 3.90s and 3.73s. 3.42 was about as low as you could get. Most were 3.23, 3.08 and higher. This coupled with emissions and fuel economy standards is what killed the muscle cars.

Any chance of talking about the mid 70s early smog cars because some of these cars went into the mid 70s & not suddenly stopped Charger & Challenger had a 75 & 76 model as well 80 as well

1974 was the last year of the Challenger. I went to several dealers in the late summer of 1974 trying to order a 1975 and they all said that production was over. No 1976 models either. I checked for Barracuda’s at the same time. No dice. In 1978 the Challenger returned as a rebadged Mitsubishi.

In the US you never had those 400-500hp cars. It was gross hp. The net value was and has always been much less.

You’re mostly correct. But you’re forgetting about the 73-74 SD 455 Pontiacs. Everyone knows about them. Another one that gets completely overlooked is the 77-79 W72 Pontiacs. A properly equipped 79 Trans Am with the W72, 4 speed and 3.42 gears could run a mid to low 14 second quarter mile in a 3800lb car. It was officially rated at 220 HP but the NHRA rated it at 275. This was through one of GM’s horribly restrictive catalytic converters. In reality all they did was put a slightly more aggressive camshaft and used production Pontiac 350 heads to bump compression up to 8.2:1 from the standard 7.7:1. It even still used the revised in 75 intake that restricted the secondary ports in the intake manifold that made them D shaped instead of being round. Proof GM should’ve retained the Pontiac V8 and scrapped the others. But I guess Corvette owners would’ve cried if their halo car had a Pontiac engine in it.

This video is not represeting the specific muscle cars models looking also at smaller engines and single exhaust versions as well as not mentioning the net hp rating. The magazines more often tested fullt loaded versions as the manufactors wanted att show detuned low compression cars with lower insurence rates than in in the glory days. And then we know of the moderate hp ratings of the hot muscle cars in the late sixties, same for the hot engines in the early seventies. '73-'74 455SD is a great example.

.....then explain rhe 1973-1974 pontiac 455 sd firebird/TA?(that car would kick ass of a lot of myscle cars of the 60's and early 70's)

Most of them were actually pretty slow, even when they were new. One of the slang terms for a slow car was a "stone". Most muscle cars were actually stones from the factory. For every Swiss Cheese Catalina or Thunderbolt you saw on the street you'd see 10,000 Camaro SS cars with a 350 or Mustang GT 390. Yes, they all raced on the street a lot, and they all won some of those races...against other slow cars. Ramcharger? L88? Rare as hen's teeth.

There's some good information in this video but there is also some untrue statements. No 1971 Chevelle had 425 hp from the factory. Never heard of a Mustang Mack 1 either... What's a four hundred forty? You mean a four forty?

Actually GM dropped compression in 71. They initiated an 8.5:1 cap starting in 71. Ford and Mopar followed in 72. As far as GM went, most high performance engines were unchanged from 71-72. The horsepower drop was on paper only with the switch from gross to SAE net.

These were actually interesting cars. The 73 was the only GTO put on the colonnade platform. While emissions choked the 400 and 455 of that time period, the SD 455 was supposed to be available in the 73 GTO, Grand Am and Grand Prix in addition to the Firebird which was the only one that actually got the SD. The Grand Am was seen as the replacement for the GTO. In reality the 73 GTO would handle circles around any of the earlier models built even though they were heavier. The 74 GTO had a ton of potential. Imagine if GM had offered a 400 or 455 in this lightweight Nova clone. Let alone the SD.
