Indeed. Mandolin is one of the instrument the stereotypical Italian play, at least in the eyes of the foreigners. Germans usually say "Italians, pizza, spaghetti, mandolino" (the more sophisticated throw a guitar in it) and indeed the mandolin was invented in Italy, almost at the same time both in Naples and in Lombardy (the region where Milan is, home for example to the Stradivari violin makers - sorry if I sound nerdish and know-it-all).

Cool! You have good technique! Thee are also thousands of pieces of classical music. None are bluegrass. Lol! I love Bach, Vivaldi, Händel, etc. Baroque dounds great on mandolin. Beethoven wrote 4 or 6 pieces for mandolin for some gal he was in love with. Mozart also wrote some music for mandolin. There are a lot of superb turn of the 20th century Italian virtuoso mandolin pieces such as Munier's Capriccio Spagnuolo. And the list goes on. Anything written for violin is good for mandolin since mando is a plucked version of the violin I need to taste something besides classic as I've had a hankering for something more modern for just the last month so I really like your offering here. Very nice! Hahaha! Perfect coincidental timing for me. I have two mandos. One flatback and my favorite, my bowlback. Thanks for posting this!

Gibson is the standard. Most modern mandolins are based on the 1920's Gibson's designed by Lloyd Loar. He is the stradivarius of the mandolin. His original mandolins are $100,000+, but many modern makers build in his style. Look at Carter Guitars in Nashville for a broad range of top instruments.
@Road_Rash3 жыл бұрын
Buying an expensive mandolin right away is a sure way to get an overpriced wall hanger...you need to see if you're gonna stick with it before investing thousands of dollars into an instrument you can't play...and asking 'who's the best mandolin maker' is like asking, 'who's the best cook'...ask 10 different players & you'll get 10 different answers...my advice would be to buy a cheap mandolin to start with & have a professional set it up for you so it'll sound as good as it can & be easy to play...learn on that one for a few months & if you can see that you're making progress & are truly going to stick with it, then buy a better one...I've been playing 9 years & still can't afford the one I want...if I could buy any mandolin I wanted, I'd buy a Rosa, but it costs a minimum of $6000 US dollars...I've never had a car that cost that much, so it won't be happening any time soon...you can get a Rogue or something like that on Amazon pretty cheap & have a good setup do done on it & it'll sound just fine...worry about pro grade when you learn how to play...

Nice. Great stuff. Not eveything is about bluegrass! Seems to be so here in the US. OOOOOOOO!! Maggie Mae! I forgot that one and is a long time favorite! I love that piece. Uhm, I can suggest a whole bunch of non-bluegrass tunes. Get the Bach Cello Suites transposed for violin. Also, as Chris Thile has demonstrated so adeptly, the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin are intermediate pieces. As well, of course, there are all the hundreds of Irish tunes which are easy to play. Thank you for sharing! Well played, too, I must add.

Saint Steven Lol. Intermediate pieces, Lol. very funny. The cello suites aren't too bad, but the violin suites are SO.....intermediate.....;-)
@infledermaus9 жыл бұрын
mandohat There is a website, can't remember the name, that when it lists most Bach, it says it's "intermediate." The cello suites are a lot of fun. Pretty easy actually. Well, some are ..... Oooo. Bach's music tends to be right under your fingers. No jumping around - not much. I like to sit and play through a stack of music. Keeps the reading skills up and I tend to learn new fingering (what I call climbing the ladder - moving up the strings from G through E rather than jump from position to position) almost every time I play stuff in volumes..I love TRYING to play his music. Vivaldi is pretty easy. I find Mozart hard to play. All of it is so beautiful though. It's worth trying. Every time you try you get better! Practice, practice, practice.

@mandohat9 жыл бұрын
it's just how Gibson designed their fingerboards in the 20's, and they kept it the same ever since. I'd rather have a flat one, because I don't play notes that high on the mandolin. the mandolinists of that era may have needed those high notes, but nobody really uses them now, and it just gets in the way of the pick.
