Man... I thought I was the only one. Lol... Good to know I'm not alone. I like what I do. And I agree, when I'm by myself. I do my best work. If someone asks me to play a song. I start feeling like that frog, that comes out of the cigar box. He has the top hat, cane and jacket to top it all off. By himself, he sings, dances and has a great time. Put in front of people. Don't do anything. Lol !

I have the same problem! My skills on guitar are mediocre but as soon as I'm being watched my playing becomes equivalent to someone that's picked up a guitar for first time. Is there a cure?
@oceanswithin
@oceanswithin Ай бұрын
@@kevlahead7278 The problem is that when you're alone, the "task positive network" of the brain is engaged and allows you to play to the best of your ability. When observed by other people, the brain often switches to "default mode network" and that is why performance deteriorates. Guitar playing is automatic and mostly subconscious motor functioning under the task positive network, but in default mode you are consciously focused on individual movements and what other people think. There is also a vicious cycle, since you soon find you aren't playing well, you start trying even harder and observing yourself even harder which leads to even worse playing, and so on. I recommend playing while recording yourself with your phone, this way you can get somewhat used to playing while observed in some way. Of course it's a good idea to play more in front of people, maybe at first without amplification and them not really listening, just being in the same room. In sports psychology people find it helpful to come up with some kind of ritual before practice, eg. a hand gesture or a phrase, which becomes associated with focusing on the task. The ritual can then help maintain the task positive network when the pressure is on. One problem is that when around people, you become too focused on the end result and avoiding mistakes instead of enjoying the actual playing. Sometimes reverse psychology works, try making as many mistakes as possible. You might find you can actually play better when the brain doesn't consider mistakes something to avoid at all cost. Sorry for long answer :)

Everyone single human being is a beginner at anything and everything they have not yet tried. Practice, actually sticking those paws to the giiiiteer every single days for 1-3 hours even if all that comes out is random noise at first, is what makes you a player/musician. With enough time and patience you start to see where your fingers make certain sounds, how two or more notes creates a sound pattern that is either pleasing or not, and everyone knows a chord in harmony with itself from chaos and random jazz bologna. DO THIS OVER AND OVER until you no longer feel the tips of your fingers getting sore, nice and callused, but don't make them bleed JUST YET. Then, is you grab something sharp, peel off those suckers which, are tight, but strangely loose and Frikimseduchly attached to the ends of your fingers. Next, Bandage those babies up for awhile until the meat turns into a nice pink rose shade or, if your feelin' free fudge'n Willy in that thaaang, a bit purp de lurp. Lastly, you pick up a guitar and... wha-laa, you are a beginner again!?!?!?! whaaat?!?!

There's tunes like this that work for piano too. (No, this isn't about an ubiquitous YT ad.) In my youth, I played in bands. Often I played guitar, but I also played keys. One time decades later, I found myself at a party in the Pebble Beach home of a client. I was asked to play the piano. I had forgotten more tunes than I remembered. What I managed to do was make medleys of the recognizable parts of popular tunes from the '70's through the '80's. It worked! I must say it helps when other guests have been well-fed and 'watered'. It's easier to make a crowd happy when it's already happy. Good times!

This is a great example of what a guitar player should (and only can) play when totally drunk. Nobody can forget the G shape... so while your head leans over the guitar, just before you faint or fall on the ground, lift your head and slide the same G shape a few frets down until you hear the C chord, then slide it 2 frets more and you get D... Brilliant!!! Then when you´re back in G, hit some basic hammer ons and pull offs you learned as a beginner. Amazing life hacks for guitar players who get drunk as hell but still want to impress someone!! (You always need a plan-B, remember?)

@GuitarME really enjoying this little G chord in a different way. Im 55 years old, work drives insane and the guitar was my get away. I unfortunately stopped playing for some time. After seeing your video it made me want to play again. Now my fingers are hurting but it's worth the couple weeks struggles of building up my fingers again. Thank you for this. Really appreciate it.

With an acoustic I just try to remember my Beatles song book or some Eagles and everyone starts to sing along getting me through. With a solid body I'm a pentatonic showboat.....lol..... My fingers kind of instinctively go to the E chord and I kind of noodle around the open strings there or play Led Zep's Over The Hills And Far Away great acoustic piece for showing off or Tangerine

I hit an open G and then immediately think '39 by Queen and then hammer out 4 or 5 chords, with a bit of the melody line, before drying up - so I'm off to learn it properly... Thanks for the inspiration :D

'G' ? perfect. I always freeze in this situation, but do manage a couple of Warren Zevon songs, and The River Bruce's classic. i have to tune down though my singing leaves a bit to be desired.

@@GuitarME I was a lorry (semi) driver for 45 years, but did my last two years working in a care home for people with learning difficulties, On my Thursday late shift i took my guitar into work, and after supper, I used to sing to the residents, everything from the Everly Bros, the Eagles, and Led Belly. They sang along and danced for the time we had together, and didn't criticize my lack of talent. We always ended up with Goodnight Irene.
