Great video. I would argue that the reason to ask for feedback is not only to show them that what they say has value, that should be understood in general, but to motivate them in all activities to be fully engaged. You might think that it is the same thing, but if you think of that student who spends far too much time being distracted by their mobile phone, this is how you get them to stop being on their phone and participate.
@etacude4 жыл бұрын
Great point Yuri! Without a reason to perform and no motivation to improve, students will lose interest and not work as hard. By giving them consistent feedback that reflects on their ability and work, learners will be more engaged. :)

Hey! may I add something. In "hobby expert" I think that it would be more interesting for younger students to talk about a video game and how to play it! I find that younger students are more keen on talking about video games rather than hobbies now a days ) Thanks for those ideas! very helpfull!
@etacude4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick! I totally agree. It's something I've been thinking over, whether to include games or not. I have in the past allowed students to talk about games. Because it can be interesting when they explain the dynamics of the games, the items, opponents, characters, they use unique vocabulary and talk about the strategy involved. In some cases it worked out really well. If you know your students and believe that it is something that they are passionate about by all means use it! 😆 What I found though is that in practice a lot of students weren't creative at all, only using it as a lazy attempt to talk about something simple. In some cases they didn't think about it all gave the same answers about practice and shooting. I also want them to show off hobbies and skills in real life, to move them a bit away from gaming. I teach in South Korea and as you might know, gaming is huge here. I want them to share other parts of their lives. TLDR; If students are passionate about something, USE it because that can be used to get excited about English. But, don't let students used it as a lazy excuse.

@etacude4 жыл бұрын
They need to be held accountable. It might be that they don't have enough time will have to make it because the public test will come whether they are ready or not. Give them goals for each week to read to a certain page. You can also run it like a book club where you put them in groups and each group should encourage their members. I'm not exactly sure what they have to read or what your goal is with them Debbie. Can you explain the ideal scenario, what would you like them to achieve?

I think it's a bit presumptuous to say video games are not a hobby that students could improve on. I think it makes you come across as a bit of a curmudgeon. Especially if it is something that other students enjoy as well. There are specific skills that can be trained, like hand eye coordination, aim, APM, game sense, strategy, and tactics. Explaining these skills to another student is definitely valid English practice. Even improving sleep could be done in a legitimate manner. Avoid blue light an hour before bed, have a bed time ritual, make the room colder, get blackout curtains. As soon as you tell a student they can NOT do something, that is exactly what they will want to do. You'll also kill their joy and passion for class if you limit what you consider legitimate. Instead, I think it is far better to allow students to do ANYTHING they want, but just hold them to a standard. Your 5 step rule was perfect. "Sure, Susie, you can give us advice on how to sleep better, but remember, you have to have five clear steps and use a variety of vocabulary. Definitely sounds challenging, let me know if you start having trouble. Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with!"

It works for groups of students, but what if you are a private tutor and have a single student?

A minute ago, I actually finished a video on 30 activities that you can play one-on-one with a student. I should release within the next couple of days. I hope it will help! :)

Hey , How can we help students to learn English through movies ? And how to make movie nights more valuable to them ? Thxxx

I haven't even thought of tackling this as an online lesson, but when I was still working at a language school, we used to have a movie night at the student res once a week. They decided on the movie and had the opportunity to pause whenever they liked, ask questions and best of all... start heated discussions based on their own opinions. Once the movie was complete, we discussed our thoughts and addressed some more questions over hot chocolate before I departed for home, but some nights... one movie could literally take about 4 hours to watch!
