We did it earlier than usual. More just to have it there in place. London is pretty far south, October would be a great time to do it If you did it now, then there is a good chance you would have to do a fair bit of watering

I’ve seen lots of overseeding videos and this is up there with the best, possibly even THE Best. I did however have 2 questions. 1) is it ok to seed, then fertilise then top dress? Does it matter? 2) main question - you say to use top soil or compost and not top dressing which has sand in it. Virtually every other video I’ve seen says to use top dressing if overseeding. If we aren’t using top dressing what’s its purpose? When would you use it?
@Premier_lawns_official5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your compliments, there is a lot to unpack in it It depends on what you are trying to achieve, and what kind of soil you have in your lawn I would only recommend sand, if you have a sandy lawn or can get a sports grade sand and even then that should only be used for levelling. There isn't any goodness in sand, so it's not going to provide much benefit to the seeds Compost is great for seed, lots of goodness in it. As it breaks down it will feed the lawn But it won't do any levelling as it will break down Next up, a good quality bag screened topsoil works great too. This will help protect the seed, help improve the quality of the lawn and also help with levels To answer your first question, renovate, seed, soil, level work the seed/soil in then fertilize If you put on the fertilizer first you risk damaging the fertilizer prills, this can stop it from working or worse damage the lawn by burning it That's why it goes on after everything else is done 👍

over the last 18 months ive took lawn care a lot more serious. in the spring i scarified and overseeed again as well as thespring before, but this time around ive noticed a lot of grass types in the lawn that i dont like, bermuda grass is somehow in my fescue and rye lawn in southampton england, i dont know how it got there or how it is even surviving but its ugly, i only identify it as bermuda from a plant app on my phone, im like 95% sure it is bermuda.... i also noticed fungus, where its hard to 100% say if its brown patch or leaf spot but the blades do have brown spots on them, i need a fungicide but they are banned in the uk, so i sprayed neem oil on the lawn the other week, its not really done anything, i got some turfsolv so ill try that next but its not really a fungicide but says it helps with diseases.... i think i got the fungus due to overwatering after seeding. just seems bizare that we can buy glyphosate but cant buy a fungicide for a lawn. i feel im trying to polish a turd really, sure ive had both my neighbours say my lawn looks nice, but im a perfectionist nd its not the level im looking for. i dont think ill ever achieve the level i want without killing and starting over. im forver digging weed grasses out of it. but i suppose it gives me something to do on a weekend, lol. i bought one of those soil ph things too and mine is quite low with an acerage of 5.2 so i added some lime a few weeks back too. ill keep trying with it as killing it all off is a last resort really.

How much sun does it get? If you get a lot then removing the top inch, adding rootzone then seeding fine fescue is the best solution based on everything I have tried. Fine fescue will get incredible dense in full sun and prevent any weedgrassess from germinating. you may get some during the establishment phase but unlike bent / rye fine fescue looks nothing like poa making it easy to remove. I have never had poa in dense fine fescue. If it's shaded then there will always be poa. There is a fungicide called provonto. It's a spray meant for plants but has the same ingredients as a lawn fungicide. I treatment fusarium and red thread will fast results.

@@stevenbelcher5658 when i started out with the lawn it was moss infested, i bought a scarifier and like did 5 passes on the lawn trying to get all the moss out, it didnt really leave alot of grass left to be honest, i also aerated with a handheld tool which was a job and a half giving me blisters over numerous days, i overseeded it and was amazed at the results, but since then ive taken it more serious and really i believe a lot of weed grasses germinated along with the seeds i put down. from a distance the lawn looks great but up close im not happy with it. i tell myself that i will kill it off somehwen or another and start the lawn over using 100% fescue... then i spend so much time polishing it, adding lime, neem oi, nitrogen, fertliser, iron seaweed etc etc as well as spending hours forking out poa i feel ive spend too much time on it to kill it off now. one side of the lawn is always in full sun, the other side has a few areas that struggle in shade, this is where most of the weed grasses are, but even full sun areas gets poa. i over seeded twice now with a1 seeds for shade and drought, it has an abundunt of species, but mostly made up of red fescue and rye, as other types like smooth meadow and bents were very low percentage. i think ill just keep plodding away with it as im slowly improving it little by little. hopefully next growing season it will be a touch better then this one and so on.

@@stevenbelcher5658 I did give a more detailed reply but it seems to of not went through. Or maybe it did but I dont see it, the lawn was massively moss infested. I heavily scarified it and over seeded and a shade and drought mix which is mostly made up of red fescue but has numerous species. 1 side gets full sun bear all day but the other side is fairly shaded . Not over shaded so I do not get grass to grow but shaded anough for it to struggle. This is the area where most the poa is but I genreally have weed grass all over that must of come though after removing the moss. Not just poa, I dug a patch of what I believe to be Yorkshire for the other day, I have Bermuda scattered about too. Thing is you stand one end of the garden and look at the lawn and it looks great, but you get close and it’s not good. I know I’m fussy maybe it would of been best to kill it off turf cut it and start over but I suggested it to my misses and she thinks I’m mad as she thinks the lawn look great. Thing is I have put a lot of effort into it now, so maybe I will just keep improving it bit by bit
@stevenbelcher56585 ай бұрын
@@SuperChalkster I tried improving a lawn with weedgrass and it never worked out no matter what I tried. Starting again is what I would do after failing to do so over many years of overseeding, verticutting, trying different height of cut, watering etc.. You eliminated the poa and remove all the unwanted grass species when starting again. Just make sure to remove the top layer a weed grass seeds dont get killed off by glyphosate . Also never scarify and leave the debris on the grass to clean up afterwards as it knocks all the seed heads into the soil. The scarifier neeeds to have a bag to collect the debris as its cut. Cancel Reply
@SuperChalkster5 ай бұрын
@@stevenbelcher5658 I would kill it all then hire a turf cutter and rotavator and level it out like a bowling green to either lay turf or seed. But that is last resort, because to be fair I am slowly improving it all the time, at the moment there is no poa that I can see but I expect come the weekend there be a few more for me to fork out, had a small patch of what I believe to be Yorkshire fog I dig out this weekend filled it back up with top soil but not seeded yet as I would t be able to keep it moist in this heat. Only thing is I have Bermuda here and there. But I was thinking of brushing it with glyphosate using a cotton bud here and there, It would obviously be better on the long run to start again but I think for now I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.
