A tip regarding "Janssons Frestelse": If you don't like anchovies or if you are a vegetarian you can exchange them with pickled capers. BTW: Swedish "ansjovis" is made from sprat, not anchovy. 🤪
@SwedenwithRobi8 күн бұрын
Sprat? Really 😂? I didn’t know. Thanks for sharing this. I think I will try this Christmas, I like the taste of capers so probably I would like it.
@arvidsson567 күн бұрын
@SwedenwithRobi Yes, it is confusing. What you buy in Sweden under the name "ansjovis" is seasoned and pickled sprats. Canned real anchovies go by the name "sardeller". The fish are not related, but the result after seasoning and aging is similar.

Yes, we have similar type of small fish in Tanzania. We call them Dagaa( google dagaa in English). We usually deep fry the, and they make a really delicious and healthy snack. Never imagined them cooked together with potatoes.

Pepparkakor goes very well with a wide array of dairy products (and many things containing such products). Examples are milk, yoghurt, filmjölk, several types of cheese (I recommend pairing them with Roquefort cheese, Gorgonzola and similar ones) and last but not least ice cream. Thanks for a very nice video!

Though Norwegian lutfisk is better :-) They add green peas and a bit of bacon. Fun fact, Portugal 🇵🇹 is the major importer of lye fish. They really love dried/cured fish over there. (Lutfisk is cured in lye, then dried over months)
@rolandgustafsson56556 күн бұрын
@SwedenwithRobi Bacon 🥓should not be served together with lutfisk,its like the terrible pineapple🍍pizza 🤮However in Sweden we often serve green peas together with lutfisk😋

It's really not a question of "missing" something - pigs trotters is something really disgusting which - fortunately - never has been a tradition in my family. Everyone is free to eat what they like during Christmas and there are some things I'd never ever touch.
@johankaewberg81626 күн бұрын
Pig trotters are great! But a thing about Julbord is that there is such an abundance that you’re not going to be able to taste everything anyway. To each their own 😊

I've never heard of butter om my rice porridge, I typically pour milk on it, but of course I sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it. I semi-popular topic of discussion is the order. Cinnamon or sugar first? Or milk first or last?
@SwedenwithRobi4 күн бұрын
@@rasmuswi Butter makes everything taste better 😊. These topics would make interesting Fika conversations , it makes sense to me if milk is always last 😄. I also think why not both cinnamon and sugar, they each play different roles in taste.

Alright! There is a small translational error and thats super common. And one of the reasons why we may keep Janssons for ourselves. Janssons frestelse containst 4 things. Potatoes, onions, cream and a tin of sprat spiced with sandalwood. Optionally there are some breadcrumbs ontop, milk mixed with the cream, butter on top and or some salt and pepper. About the tin of sprat spiced with sandalwood. The tin is called Ansjovis and do not contain any anchovy at all. We have had it for over a hundred years. If you want a tin of anchovy you buy a tin of sardeller. Not to be confused with sardiner that is the darn sprat again that is haunting us.

"Pro" tip: Don't make "knäck" by boiling it for God-knows-how-long on the stove. Use the microwave! Much, much easier!
@SwedenwithRobi4 күн бұрын
@@christopherx7428 I must try this 😄
@christopherx74284 күн бұрын
@SwedenwithRobi You can decide how soft or hard you want it to be by adjusting the time in the microwave. This is ofc dependent on how much you want to make. My recepy suggests 8-10 min, I found that 9:20 suits me. The thing is that you dont have to mix or treat the ingredients, just chuck it down into a large bowl and shove it in the microwave. It couldn't be easier!
