These are just modern examples. Most clubs 'bought success' - just didn't take as much money back then since football wasn't as big. eg. Liverpool wouldn't have had their golden era without the Moores family

I do not think anyone thinks Chelsea were world class before, because they simply were not. Now they are one of the top teams, so what is the problem here? And yes, that is how clubs gain more fans and wider support. The team plays better football, wins more trophies and becomes more popular, so the people around the world start to take notice. Every club has some die hard fans too. There are many more reasons people support their favourite team. Maybe it is because of the special player? I supported Chelsea because it had some Russian connection, because Shevchenko was playing there (I am Russian, but half Ukrainian), and because my cousins hated Chelsea and loved Arsenal, while I hated Arsenal :)
