I used to suffer from sleep paralysis when I was a child and teen, but it went away. I might even have beaten it myself. It almost always happened when I tried taking a nap during the day, rarely at night and it was really spooky stuff until I learned about what sleep paralysis is as an adult. It would always start with a intense buzzing and humming sound, like static on a radio or an old TV and then I would feel how something scary, some form of entity, like a half transparent shadow would approach my bed and loom over me while I couldn't move. Reading Stephen King's "It" as a child helped me. In it he describes the "Ritual of Chudd" where you defeat a demon by challenging it to a duel of the mind and metaphorically biting into its tongue and not letting go till it begs for mercy. So when it happened again, I would become really aggressive and confrontational, mentally challenging the shadow to a fight and while I couldn't really bite it's tongue, I imagined turning into a powerful beast, usually a large crocodile for some reason and just rip the shadow to pieces in my mind. The last few times it happened I got outright giddy with anticipation. "So, you came back to get your ass kicked again?" I was thinking. Shortly after that it stopped for good. I'm not saying that I believe in supernatural stuff and I somehow defeated a demon or something, but I do think I kind of healed myself from the sleep paralysis affliction somehow though some form of self-hypnosis or by taking charge of my dreams. Now it kind of is my go-to without even thinking about it. Even in regular nightmares, I always turn into a crocodile or some sort of monster and turn it around on whatever is coming after me in the nightmare. I'm strangely aggressive and predatory in my dreams, always hunting down, fighting and mauling the scary stuff instead of being afraid of it. It is as if in my dreams the ability to fear was replaced with a single minded chain dog-like bloodlust and aggression.

I get sleep paralysis , sometimes it is just in my legs but other times it is in my whole body, I usually get it when I wake up from a really bad nightmare, and when I am in sleep paralysis I usually try to yell for help but most of the time I can't, a few months ago I had a particular bad case of sleep paralysis and when I wake up I tried to roll over because I was in an uncomfortable position but I quickly realized that I couldn't move, I tried to scream for help but my mouth felt like it was glued shut, It was one of the scariest things that I had to go through . My nightmares have the opposite effect on me, instead of facing it or the monster chasing me It torments me with my memories to get me to give in to it, and I have had the same nightmare for the past few months

@@timberwolf700 Sorry to hear (read) that. I can only recommend trying to switch into a defiant, aggressive mode when it happens again. As I said, it helped me. When I was unemployed for a while, I had nightmares that were clearly about a sense of futility, where I would try to do something in my dreams and it just wouldn't work, no matter how much I tried. Can you identify a theme in your nightmares too, or is it just generic "monster chasing me" kind of stuff?

I used to get sleep paralysis a lot--about every other day when I was in my late teens. The most important thing when it happens is to remain completely calm and relaxed. If you relax and don't try to move, it usually goes away very quickly. However, if you fight it and try to move, then the sleep paralysis lasts longer, and you're more likely to start getting the hallucinations.

I have a cousin who suffered an episode of sleep paralysis while in a medical surgery. My cousin who I used to be friends with, suffered a lot of knee injuries throughout his life whilst playing various sports like football and hockey. He eventually got a major knee surgury done in the hospital. He was given some form of anesthesia, which later became futile after the surgery commenced. He was a very large man, both in weight and height and was very athletic; I reckon the anesthesia was just unable to accommodate his large frame. He woke up mid-surgery and felt EVERYTHING. He described it as the worst pain one could possibly imagine, and that it felt like it lasted for HOURS. He even mentioned that he cried throughout it but was stuck in his paralyzed body and could not move nor communicate. It was quite a traumatic experience, no doubt. Has anything like this ever happen to anyone else? Seriously… sleep paralysis ain’t no joke.

I've had sleep paralysis a couple times before and I'd like to leave some tips to prevent anything too scary happening. These are personal things that I do and I have no idea if it works for everyone but just in case I'll post something here. -I've noticed that most of the times I've had sleep paralysis it's when I sleep on my back so I strictly sleep on my side. It's to the point where I actually can't sleep on my back anymore but I haven't had very many experiences w sleep paralysis since I've started doing it. This doesn't completely prevent it though. -When I wake up I always keep my eyes closed until I know I can move. This has probably saved me a few times from seeing some nasty hallucination. -If I wake up and I can't move, I keep my eyes closed no matter what. I've learned that opening my eyes and seeing something nasty is worse than being scared but not seeing anything. Then you just have to keep trying to move until you actually can. After that you should be good to go. I hope that this can help someone, I know it can be super scary believe me, I've seen some very crappy things that left me a bit on edge before. But I've adapted and if I can I think anyone who struggles with this can too.

You guys are lucky that all you got was shadowy figures, it happened to me for the first time a few weeks ago, and I woke up to a _very_ tall, lean and wide shouldered man with a _very_ hard face looking down at me, clear as me looking in the mirror, with eyes of infinite evil staring back at me. After looking into his eyes, I know what it's like looking at the It monsters dead lights. Every thought and feeling disappears from your mind, only two infinitely small points of the coldest light imaginable surrounded by the largest, darkest blackness imaginable, and the only sensation is fear, magnified 1000 times more than anything you have ever felt before. I woke up gasping for breath when I remembered to shut my eyes. I'll take shadowy figures _any_ day over a repeat of that, holy _shit..._

I have suffered from sleep paralysis as long as i can remember and no matter how many times it has happened, the effect has not changed at all. It is still as scary now as it was 20 years ago. The real torture is knowing my son is asleep in the next room, i see something moving in my room but can not move to go protect my son, nor am i able to yell to get his attention. I now sleep with the TV on every night, dont see the shadows or hear any sounds due to the light and volume from my TV. It has really helped.

I have a horrible anxiety disorder, and thus sleep paralysis is almost a part of my life. It happens every two weeks, maybe, and when it happens I already know what it is, so I simply remain calm, try not to move, and breath very slowly and lightly. That way I get to focus and slowly gain control over my muscles. That doesn't prevent me from getting up with my heartbeat at a thousand percent, of course, but it helps me go back to sleep soundly. Hope it helps anyone out there!

Purely terrifying. It has been happening to me 3-4 times a month since I was 14, so 20 years I’ve been dealing with it. This is how it goes for me…it starts out with a high pitched ringing sound, that continues to get louder with a slight static. As if you turned up a speaker system really high without playing any music. Sometimes I can hear a rope tightening. Then I can feel the sheets move underneath me, as if I’m being pulled off the bed, or a floating sensation. I cannot move, or talk. At this point I close my eyes because I know what’s coming…usually it’s a super old woman standing next to me, whispering really fast, or it’s a really tall dark manly figure standing in the corner of the room, laughing under his breath. If I keep my eyes open, all hell breaks loose. I’ll float toward the closet, or the old woman will rub her face on mine. Incredibly terrifying. And this is just what usually happens. Sometimes though, it’s way worse…my best advise to anyone dealing with this, is when it starts, keep your eyes closed and focus on falling asleep the best you can, no matter what you hear or feel. This is long winded and I apologize! Just wanted to leave my mark for ppl researching this.
@wiz90937 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice it does help alot if your eyes are closed I've only gotten it two times but the first time it happened my eyes were open and unsettling figure kept starting at me getting closer as i lay helpless trying to scream but nothing moved. The second time with eyes closes i heard noises like someone tapping the floor and scratching getting near me from outside the house until lit was in my room, again my attempt of trying to move a muscle or scream felt useless and made the fear worse untill i camled my down and focused on breathing which made it go away

Also breathe heavier (not scared just heavy) so that your muscles will eventually start moving. If you mouth open then just keep breathing heavy. Ive been doing this for years and it works everytime. Just make sure that you get up and stay up for at least 10 minutes before going back to sleep.

@leefelixsegg26664 жыл бұрын
@@nala2814 yes because you are still breathing. If you are calm enough breathing becomes easier so make sure to calm yourself after realizing you are paralyzed. Also think happy things so your mind doesnt play tricks and scare you. If you mouth is closed by default there is still enough room for air to get out. Just breath heavy, calm but heavy. When your mouth is closed and you push air out that starts movements to your facial muscles therefore eventually waking you up. If mouth open then just do the breathing technique.

I have about 12 yrs of sleep paralysis episodes. I only experience it maybe once every 4-8 months but this was a very accurate explanation without being too dramatic. It is absolutely terrifying and I would say that the number one scary part is the presence of someone or something over you, watching you yet you cannot scream. It is terrifying.

I used to have sleep paralysis pretty often until I started letting my Labrador sleep on the bed with me. It has been close to 8 years since I've had an episode thanks to him. It happened once when I first let him on the bed and he woke up knowing something was wrong with me. He started nudging my leg harder and harder until suddenly I could move again. Then he snuggled up to me real tight. Haven't had an episode since.

I have experienced it twice in less than a month. The first time happened when I moved to a new house, I had no AC and no curtains so the room was bright due to the street lights. I was sharing the room with my brother and grandma. We just had a ceiling fan installed that made a really annoying sound all night that barely let me sleep. I remember the episode vividly. I could only hear the fan making that annoying sound and saw my brother staring at me without even blinking, I did felt like something was on top of my chest making it difficult to breathe, I tried to move without success and also tried to scream. I then realized it wasn’t real because no one could hear me so I closed my eyes and tried to sleep again.

I don’t know why it happened the second time. I just remember waking up without being able to move. I got really scared because this time seemed very real. I saw my brother waking up and standing next to me and talking nonsense. I was sweating an awful lot trying to breathe. Soon realized that it happened again, I calmed down and tried to ignore it. That shit took so long. 0/10 experience.

I've been suffering from sleep paralysis episodes for most of my life, starting when I was about 7 years old. I'm 30 now. Even though it doesn't happen every night, I have a whole lot of experiences with it. I've had times where I just powered through it and decided not to wake up, which led to some very lucid and weird dreams. Other times, things were going on that made me want to wake up immediately. The most memorable time from my childhood included a small, tornado like vortex raging above my body while hearing the sounds of whispering voices in my ears.

And it repeats and repeats until I get the real "wake up session". 😭 It is tedious to keep up when it's difficult to breathe and you can't move. 😭

Many people who are experts in the skill of lucid dreaming (lucid dreams are dreams where you have full control over your dream) purposely trigger sleep paralysis, then you can turn sleep paralysis into a lucid dream since you are already more aware, so when you enter a dream you will instantly become lucid. @@AmyJoJoo Take it as a experiment, Im not religious at all, But I believe in God, I heard someone say that those are demons and to say that whenever it happened. i did it without the expectation of anything happening since I’ve never experienced anything weird besides the paralysis itself. For the first time I felt something on top of me and it felt like it was being tortured by the phrase I gave you, I felt and heard a shaky sizzling sound on my whole body like if this being was being fried, and the more I said it the more it was coming up off me and I was gaining mobility from the legs up. I even stopped saying it to see what would happen and to make sure I was tripping because I couldn’t believe what was happening and then it took grip again. Then said it like 10 more times, it literally felt and sounded like it got fried up off me completely . For some reason they can’t handle that phrase or the name “Jesus”. @@hjjbhu2285 I'll try it out for sure. I definitely believe that if we put good energy out into the universe & surround ourselves with that positivity that it brings good into our lives. I also think bad energy can build up in one place & cause weird sh*t to happen.. Calling this phenomenon sleep paralysis is a way of trying to explain something that is unexplainable. There is no way that I'm half asleep when it happens to me. The first time, my friend woke me up with a phone call, crying because her pet just died. We talked for at least 15 minutes. All I did was lay back down & put my arm over my head after we hung up. Then I felt pressure on my body, the room was hazy, almost like spinning.. it's hard to explain.. but once it stopped spinning, there were two entities dressed in black, one was standing over me, the other was kneeling on the bed next to me. I couldn't see their faces cuz my arm was in the way. They stood there talking to each other. The one kneeling on my bed was a woman, the other was a man. I can't remember a word they said I was too freaked out & very confused. My brain was so foggy during those few minutes, I thought my phone-that was still in my hand- was a can of soup.. 🤷♀️ 🤨🤔 I tried to throw it & realized I couldn't move. Finally they went away, but ever since then, whatever it is comes at least once a month. When I tell other's about the stuff I've seen & heard over the years, every single person gets goosebumps & asks me to stop cuz they have a bad feeling. There's something that attached itself to me when my family moved years ago. I kept telling everyone the house was haunted. It wasn't till my grandparents came to stay that my family finally believed me. My grandma said that her & my nephew were being followed. We moved a month later. I've always wondered why it attached itself to me. I have a large family, but for some reason, part of the whatever was in that house clung onto me & has never left.

I think I experienced sleep paralysis just last night. I remember being awake, and I knew I was awake. I could feel that I was in my own actual body, but it was strange. It felt heavy, too heavy to move, and all I could move were my eyes. In terms of hallucinations, that part was pretty limited, at least in this particular scenario. I sleep with the kind of pillow that has the little arms and that you can just sit back on without it slumping or whatever. I’m usually mostly on my side with most of my face stuffed into one of the arms, so my vision is pretty limited. I’m not entirely sure, but I feel like that kind of protected me from the terror of the episode 😅

@TheExplosiveGuy4 жыл бұрын
I had this happen to me for the first time a few weeks ago, it left me severely rattled. I knew about the phenomenon, and knew to close my eyes once I realized what was happening, but that didn't stop the fear when it happened. I woke up to a very tall and slender but wide-shouldered man with a lean face and short hair looking down at me from the side of my bed, right next to me (his knees were aligned with my arms, he was that close), and at first I only saw his face which seemed normal, but then I looked into his eyes. Ohh god those eyes... You know in the new It movie, how the monsters dead lights looked? Bright pinpoints of light behind the eyes, and once I looked into those lights I was absolutely paralyzed by fear, and I mean _paralyzed,_ my mind stopped working and all I knew was fear, nothing else, just light and fear. I remember a fragment of memory passing through my mind telling me to close my eyes, and the instant I did I woke up heaving air like I was in shock (well I mean, I pretty much was), like when the back of your throat closes up and you can barely breathe and you have to fight for the air, or kind of like when you've been underwater for too long too, but it was just a reaction to the fear. And I'm not a guy that scares easy, I haven't woken up from a nightmare since I was like 12, and I don't believe in any heeby jeeby superstitious bullshit either and I still don't, but that experience was as close as I've come to believing in it. The menace and evil I felt coming from that man's eyes will haunt me for the rest of my days, I didn't know it was even possible to feel fear like that, it was 1000x more intense than any fear I have _ever_ felt before in my life. Sleep Paralysis is no goddamn joke, I knew it sounded kind of scary but until you experience it, you just have no idea how bad it can be. Rattled me _hard._

I was told that if you put your hands on your chest while sleeping, most likely you will get it, I don't know how Factual it is, based on my experience I generally experience it 1) if I have encountered something terrible during day time, 2) watched horror movie and kept thinking about it 3) too many stressful events In a day 4) interrupted sleep during exams, assignments, traveling 5) sometimes without any reason it happens. How I overcome- I try to chant some holy mantra, and take deep breathes. I keep reminding myself that it is just a dream not reality to calm myself, as soon as I get conscious I feel relaxed. When I was kid I involuntarily shout my mother's name as soon as I get normal. Hope it would help someone, nothing to be scared of, just try to be calm and relaxed.
