"Certainly a credible one from a man who's fought in a war." Right there, through all the "Gerald" comments, you see Marbury does truly respect Leo.
@ZATennisFan2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely.. I always thought Lord Marbury respected Leo immensely. He did the Gerald thing to wind him up. Those he didn't respect he basically ignored. So him winding up Leo was a backhanded compliment of the highest order

I wrote a silly story once about a british loyalist conservative and a radical socialist that are old friends and when ever they drank the tory would toast “to the workers of the world” and the socialist replies “god save the Queen” It was inspired by this scene.

Despite Lord Marbury's drunken schtick, his acknowledgement of Leo's military service was quite heartfelt. He and President Walken (!) are my favorite incidental characters.

Considering the UK won the Falklands war, it it might have also been a little dig at the world cup in France '98. The episode was broadcast in jan 2001 and was probably being written between 99 and 2000. Argentina beat England in the 1998 world cup last 16.

I genuinely loved Lord Marbury as a character. He was always mindful of his position and of protocol but always was steadfastly supportive of the President as well, even before becoming ambassador. His advice was always sound. His drinking was there mostly for effect since it would put most he came in contact with off guard and they'd likely be dismissive of him but he was always keenly aware of what was going on and his role in whichever circumstances he found himself. Nice well-written character, deftly portrayed by Mr. Rees.

This is one of the best lines from the show, period. Wisdom from the old world. The United states thinks it knows everything, and it doesn't. England doesn't have the same power as the US, but it has far more history. They have seen everything before.

Turns out he was right. As missile defense got better the Russians and the Chinese invented hyper-sonic missiles that are faster, more accurate, they can change direction and harder to intercept. The missiles simply got better.

A truly wonderful talent. I pray he found all the ways to fulfill all his hopes and dreams as both a professional actor and mere mortal, and during the worst of times when the lights would go dark, and only he could accept and make peace with. I remember him best from his stand-out moments on West Wing, among others. He had the special gift of making the lens his tool for all our own to enjoy, and repeatedly go back to. Rest in Peace, Roger Rees.

I love that despite all the antagonism and arguing, in the end, no matter the situation, Aaron Sorkin lets his people come together, whether it's Leo and Lord John Marbury or Josh and Donna. He always, while maybe not having the happy ending, has the people in right relationships, which is partly why I love the seasons he wrote so much better than the ones he didn't.

I was in college in the mid 90's, and had a computer science prof that I was close to. He assisted me on some projects. We were sitting in his office talking one day, and he mentioned being in Huntsville, AL over the summer with his business partner working on something. He was describing how they made a program that would visually represent over 25 different variables at the same time on one 3d graph. Color, line thickness, length, etc. Pretty neat stuff. Out of the blue, it hit me. Yo, professor. Why would anyone need to see 25 variables at once? Huntsville, you say? You guys wouldn't happen to be trying to shoot down missiles would you? His face dropped and he got real quiet. Then he kind of smiled and said. "I am not at liberty to discuss this information with you any longer, and I have to warn you that if you ask any more questions, I am required by law to report you to the FBI." I laughed, "really? So I'm right?" He said, "No really. You can't ask me anything more about this or I have to make a call. Seriously." Point taken, doc. He wasn't trying to brag on being in such a team. He was illustrating how the design thought process works. I just kinda put it together.

I thought this scene was fantastic. Lord Marbury's voice is full of the begrudging cynicism when he says "You think you can make it stop... Her Royal Majesty?! Oh dear! as for Marbury.the titles a British peer has-if he is a hereditary peer - would all be courtesy titles while his father is alive and he is the oldest son. If his Mother is the curernt holder and is herself the only child of her parents then the same would apply-hope that's clear to all to you Yankee rebels! as a PS the current Queen is the first oldest daughter to become queen since Mary IIi (Victoria inherited following her uncle)Usually the oldest boy would get the throne and no daughter would inherit automatically-he law will change very soon but wont come into effect until at least george vii dies,
@MrPeterpiper19699 жыл бұрын
Jonathan the law of primo-genitor (the eldest male inherits regardless of how many daughters there are older than him) has already been changed. However as things stand it won't apply for some time as Charles is both Elizabeth's oldest son and child, William is Charle's firstborn child and William's son George will follow him to the throne barring untimely deaths or the ending of the Monarchy itself. The current line of succession is Charles -William-George-Harry(William's brother). William and Kate are about to have their second child as I understand things and if it's a girl she will slot in between George and Harry.

I love the show, but it drives me nuts that The West Wing, which claims to be high-minded and internationally aware, can make such glaring errors in addressing the ambassador. He should be addressed as 'Lord Marbury' or 'Your Lordship'. Officially, he would be known as 'John Marbury, the Baron Marbury'. Only if he was a knight of the realm would you refer to him by his first name ('Sir John'). It might seem quaint to some foreigners, but the British are rather proud of this sort of tradition!
