Our beloved Lennox passed away January 23, 2024. Thank you for your kind comments over the years.

I'm no expert, but this is what worked for us: practice for short periods several times daily, give rewards for when he/she gets a trick even partially right along with massive amounts of praise. If it is a fun game for the both of you, that encourages the pup to learn quickly.

I’ve had many dogs, and I will say our Scottie, Bruce, has by far the biggest personality of them all. Very smart, loveable, loyal, and can litterally play all day. He loves to watch hunting shows with me and gets worked up at the deer he sees on TV and in our front yard. But if he’s in the yard and a deer walks through, he’s smart enough not to charge it. Just kind of growls and stares at it. Squirrels are a much different story. 😄

We are on our second Scottish Terrier. They are wonderful and unique dogs with loads of personality. High energy, smart , but very hard headed. It looks like you got a good early start on training which is a very good thing to do. As they get older they are much harder to break of bad habits. To those who have never had one of these amazing dogs, they are wonderful pets that are great for kids old enough to interact with them. They have energy for days, love to please, will play all day and are very loyal animals. Your kid will not get bored with a Scottie.

I had my Scottie trained to sit, stay, roll over, sit on hind legs, speak when she was only a few months old. Then I signed her up for obedience classes and after we were done and graduation we had to show what we learned then they asked if anyone’s puppy could do other stuff. Well my girl shined! There were 8 other dogs and none of them could do what she did.

My Scottie, Minnie Pearl, was the biggest personality of the canine world, and brilliant. She loved watching the dog shows, Gentle Ben, and the Garfield specials on TV. She loved watching the catfish in my sons ‘ aquarium, riding in their go-cart, and sliding down the sliding board by herself. She was a peerless “singer,” too. I will always miss her.

Despite being a fast learner, housebreaking was a challenge for Lennox. The breeder had already paper trained him and getting him to observe the new rule of going outside was a bit tricky.

I'm sorry for your loss. I do wish they had a longer lifespan... Lennox is now a 4-year-old. He still somewhat dislikes rolling over, it's never been his favorite move. So funny you mention baby carrots, he loved those as a pup!

This video reminds me--many years ago, a friend made films of children's books--One of which was "Angus Lost" from the 1930's--it starred a Scotty--with his black coat and black eyes, he was very hard to light--a spot had to shine on his head in every shot
@ronaldfazekas64922 жыл бұрын
PS--the trainer got him out of the ASPCA in NYC--he was the most easygoing and gentle dog you could ask for--and he'd do anything for some liverwurst!

May I suggest teaching him roll over on a carpeted surface. I have had both Cairn terriers, and also Westies. They really do not like the hardwood floor against their back. I noticed how he laid down, attempted to roll, and then gave you ‘the look’, as if to say, Na… I’m not doing that. Mine was the same way until I got him to do it on the carpet.

Our Scottish terrier knew the name of every toy he had & he had several. You could request a specific toy & he'd retrieve it from his toy box. He could also eat off of china & even flatware with the best of manners. And he loved to talk. Scotties are very verbal. They seem to enjoy communicating with humans.
@sperryart8 жыл бұрын
+Sweet Tea We had been trying to teach Lennox his toys' names, but he was pretty disinterested in that.
@sweettea67068 жыл бұрын
+Marcy Sperry ... Try to keep the names of toys as short as possible ( one syllable ). Commands are best as one, too. Pet names are best as two & "Lennox" is that. He's a beauty. Never underestimate him. They are such a smart breed. We lost our Scottie to Lymphoma, in February. He was almost 13 & had no pre-existing conditions. But the Cancer was just too much. His heart stopped before the disease could really advance. Thankfully, he didn't suffer. We miss him horribly. Now, we are awaiting the birth of a new Scottie pup & looking forward to starting the adventure again. I'm not sure why I spilled all of that, but I couldn't help myself. Videos of pups like Lennox have kept my old heart ticking, these last few weeks. Scotties just aren't dogs. They're little folks with fur!
@sperryart8 жыл бұрын
+Sweet Tea I'm glad you shared that. And glad he did not suffer. A friend's Scottie passed away a few years back, also at 13, very suddenly. Very robust and active, but he had an undiagnosed tumor on his liver, and by the time it was discovered it was too late. It wasn't even my dog, but I cried and cried! He was such a loving and dignified gentleman. We were kind of co-workers, as his owner would take him to work every day. He would sleep under my desk. I'm glad you are getting a new Scottie pup. They are special. You are right - I won't underestimate mine!
