When I was a kid, we inherited 2 baby raccoons which we kept for about 6 months. They were extremely intelligent, would open drawers, cabinets - you name it. If you were lying on the couch, they would feel your face with their hands while looking away, kind of like a blind person. They didn't bite. Here's my favorite story about the female: We had a large coffee can that was about 1/3 of the way full with miscellaneous nuts, washers, screws etc. We would then pick out something from the can and give it to the female. She would pat it in her hands, getting the "feel" of it. We would then throw the piece back into the can and mix it up. She would put one hand into the can and swish it around while looking away (like they always do). She would eventually pull out her hand with the exact same piece in it - every time! One time the female somehow got lost inside the walls of our house. We thought she was gonna die in there but after a while she came out through the basement!

Give it food(not from hand), don't actively watch it eat. It's preferable if you are around when you feed it, so they know who to trust. Make sure you make it a routine as well. Eventually, (varying on the how the area treats raccoons) one will gradually begin to trust you. Starting with a baby is the best option, but as the video says replacing the mother is complicated.

I had a raccoon as a kid. He slept in my motorcycle helmet until he was bottle weaned. After that he wasn't allowed in the house unless under direct supervision however he was never caged and ran free outside and would come running out of the woods when called. His name was Baretta and he loved riding my motorcycle with me and I took him almost everywhere I went. He loved the ocean at O.C. Maryland and never hurt anyone bad enough for medical treatment. He was my best friend and pet I ever had. This was about 45 years ago and I still miss him.

My 10 year old cousin raised one. It was loyal only to her, and she could handle it and play with it. Everyone else was barely tolerated at a distance. They lived in the country and it was able to adapt to living free. It came back every spring for a brief visit to show off her babies which she kept at a distance. It would bang on the door and they'd give her something to eat, and then she'd go away for another year. They're super intelligent but still a wild animal and if they feel threatened they will puff up and snarl and lunge at you.

They are incredibly clean and eat every crumb. I joke that they bring their own dishwasher. One brings her six kids who are adorable. One single raccoon knocks my broom down so it hits my front door to let me know she is there. Some will take food from my hands. They are all very polite and gentle.

We’ve rescued and rehabbed several baby raccoons. There is no creature cuter. But even as a baby when their teeth aren’t particularly SHARP, they still have VERY powerful jaws so it can still hurt a LOT when they bite, playfully or not. Having hands-on experience with an exotic pet before committing to adopting it should be the norm, imo. That racoon of mine stole cucumbers, squash, apples, eggplants, different kinds of squah, corn, peaches, pears ect. The one that got me was the huge watermelon. I still wonder how he got it up that hill, across the road and through our yard and up 5 stairs to put everything on our front porch! Imagine that he was a definite little rascal got me in a lot of trouble. That he did. Mainly they didn't know I had him. Grandpa and Lonny gave him to me. They only found out when the neighbors called and wanted there produce back. They had several different garden areas they owned slot of land. Thank God we were very close to our neighbors. I found a baby racoon in the yard at my dad's cabin when I was 16. I got it some lactose free formula and raised it up. It was super friendly smart and cute. It would get a bit wild when in heat. The rest of the time no problem other than securing all shiny items. If you've baby proofed a house it's the same thing just all the way to ceiling. And I never forced it to stay inside it would go out and climb tree's and stuff. The real struggle was keeping it diurnal at first it was up all night and that was annoying. There definitely not dog's they are much smarter and have hands so can do much more but also enjoy alot of dog like games like play fighting and such. I would gladly have another unfortunately its not allowed where I live. But don't believe this video if you can handle snakes and lizards or large birds you can handle a racoon. But if you have trouble training a dog like pitbull or Rottweiler type dog maybe not good idea.

We have a baby raccoon. He is so hard to take care of. He is constantly running around and he’s got to the point where he play bites. And he bites hard. We’re teaching him not 😂😂to now. He’s so so cute. He follows us around and climbs us and sits on our shoulder. He’s so sweet but such a handful. He climbs everything too. He just attacked me.

I had one when I was a kid ( 60 years ago ) . The mother was killed in a tree accident. We were cutting the tree down for firewood and mother was killed when tree fell. Baby didn’t have his eyes open yet I took it home and bottle fed it till weaned. He lived with us till he was an adult. He lived in the house during the day most of the time he would sleep in the basement during the day. We left the outside basement door open a little so it could come and go as he pleased. We lived in the country. Most of the time he would go outside and stay till morning then he would sleep in the basement during the day .He left one night and never came back.

Keeping raccoons in captivity is bad, Bad, BAD. They grow up. They get old. They get mean and destructive. Most, (not all), most people who keep pet raccoons end up imprisoning them after a certain point because they cannot handle them. And imprisoning an intelligent animal that once knew affection and freedom is cruel, Cruel, CRUEL. Don't keep these animals.
@owlboy_99952 ай бұрын
Correct. They are just too intelligent & restless to be kept as pets. A huge component of domestication is dumbing a species down enough that it grows more listless & complacent. Even then, after millennia, look at cats and dogs. But even wild cats & dogs are generally less inquisitive & energetic than mustelids. Ferrets are notoriously cast off as pets because fashionable & whimsically sentimental people are drawn to their novelty & cuteness but have no ability to manage their near constant need for movement. Ferrets are significantly less intelligent, big & capable than raccoons, are far less capable of vicious moods when frightened, bored or annoyed. Even still, if the raccoon is the sweetest, chillest guy it only makes the inevitability of abuse/neglect/frustration in the hands of someone treating him/her as a pet that much more depressing & wrong.

I’m in Toronto in the thick of the concrete jungle, except for my tiny little back garden which is now a nightly playpen for 5 little ones and mama. They romp around, play on a swing and drink the water I put out for the birds. I have a cat flap and it took one of them about 2 seconds to figure it out (faster than the cat) and I keep catching him almost getting into my house! I go out to refill the water and tonight they all had to come and inspect the water jug! They’re cute, but in no way are they coming (invited) into my house. Nor am I feeding them- they’re healthy enough! Even the awkward, whiny runt is doing well! Toronto had plenty of food for wildlife!

This is not doing justice to raccoons in general. Yes, raccoons have less problems with direct contact to humans than many other animals. And yes, they think it‘s all their territory once they‘ve conquered it. But you can very well tell them where the red lines are - and they will respect them. We had a raccoon first toppling our garbage can on a regular basis. So we offered her some food and she stopped doing that. She used to come in the wee morning hours, so we trained her to come later. And she did. Then we missed her for several days in a row when she didn’t show up. After a couple of weeks she showed us the reason for her absence: Her children. What a funny and lovable lot. Up to that point we never petted or touched Sally. She was full of fleas. But we couldn‘t resist playing with her kids. Big mistake. They got used to humans and weren‘t very respectful. Until we taught them to be - and somehow Sally was on our side. After a couple of weeks only one of Sally‘s children - we called him Tom - regularly came to visit us. One of his sisters only occassionaly. Then Sally stayed away and the others did too. Sally only came around if she had a problem and needed help. But then Tom presented his family. We were totally amazed and in tears. That was the last living sign of „our“ raccoons. Sally came to die on our doorstep. The others never showed up again.

@@kenyonbissett3512 You can train them to use a litter box. We had relatives that had a farm on a mountain, and as a young boy, we would visit during the summers. There was a family of racoons that would slowly emerge from the brush & blueberry bushes at dusk every night. You could see their shimmering eyes, as they were sitting on the edge of the field, but still covered by the bushes. It was so exciting to see this as a city kid. My relatives would leave a tip pie plate full of food scraps from lunch & dinner, on the stairs of the porch, for them every night. 😊

Wild animals have evolved to survive in the wild. Selective breeding can produce more domesticated variants in few generations. With raccoons I expect it would take probably take around 25 to 30 years depending on the selection methods used. If you're unfamiliar with the topic, I suggest starting by looking up The Silver Fox experiment.

I just can't watch this. I rescued a baby squirrel for 6 months, and then released her. No one, and I mean no one, can domesticate, a wild animal. It just can't be done. Help them as much as you can and then, set them free. A few serious bites, later. As for squirrels, you don't have to worry, they are entirely, rabies free. You can never get rabies, from a squirrel. Squirrels are not, a rodent. They do not, carry rabies.

In 2018, 2019 & 2020,..Raccoons would routinely push open my back door and get into my kitchen,....I kept bowls and bags of cat food in there to feed lost and run-away cats, that would visit from my neighborhood. 2 to 3 cats came by every day. I live near a college campus, and students cat's would routinely run away or escape, during a move to a new apartment. I moved there because of that, I always saw friendly cats roaming the streets. I have always had "indoor" cats of my own, who are not allowed outside, except under strict supervision, or in an enclosed, screened-in porch. The Raccoons probably smelled the dry cat food or followed the lost cats, to where they hung out. Every so often a mother & baby Raccoon, would get scared when I came into my kitchen, and they'd hide behind the stove or in a cabinet. I sometimes didn't even know it. I wouldn't see them and when I locked my doors up for the night, they were trapped in my kitchen until morning. We both were alarmed when I saw them the next morning,....we both froze in our tracks. I tried not to startle them and would coax them out,....sometimes the mom Raccoon would run out but the baby ones, were too scared. They were all so cute, and their fur is so fluffy. They wash their paws that resemble small human hands, before eating. They are not fussy and will eat just about any kind of dried cat food.

So she's rainy them to be in an environment where they don't belong. She's head of racoon's at the zoo. Smh. There's a difference if the mother was killed or forest fire or rehabilitation. But these animals should not he in anyone's household. They aren't a hamster, rabbit, guinea pig. They belong in the woods.

As bad as all this information and these warnings are to me, I still dream of having a pet raccoon. I want to have some sort of exotic pet in my house, maybe even a few. I find life boring if I just get a dog or a cat which are common pets everyone always gets. The reason I like raccoons so much is that they seem so bold and curious. For example: a dog might get scared of fireworks or hostile and start barking and such, but a raccoon would just want to examine or even play with it. Only thing I'm afraid of is the stitches lol...

If you do plan on getting a coon don't worry about the scatches as much you'll need to worry about the rabies more make sure it has its shots and you'll want to feed it K.M.R for the first 5 weeks of its life then start adding a little banana baby food or smash wet cat food both work (baby works a bit better tho) and at 9 weeks ween it of the bottle so by 10 weeks it should be eating solid for and drinking only water (also make sure until it poops by itself take a WARM wash cloth and rub in a upward motion to its belly [anus- belly] also burp it after feeding session 1-9 weeks) well that's all I can help you with if you do get a coon so yea have fun if you do

It’s not a casual choice. Always best to think of the animal’s happiness before your own amusement. Can you provide a satisfying, stimulating life for it? Would you have a toddler, if the toddler had sharp teeth & strong jaws, was an exceptional climber and did lots of meth? It would, no dount, be interesting, to have the baby from Trainspotting as a *guest* for a brief conversation topic, but raccoons live much longer than cats and dogs, and rather than maturing into greater docility & lower energy, they become more feral at around 1 year - makes especially - with no sign of slowing down for a good long while. I cared for & raised them as a wildlife rehabilitator for years. If you don’t entertain them, they will make their own amusement. Ours had toys & a gymnasium like cage to keep them entertained. They still learned how to work the water hose in their cage & would spray you as you went to water them, finding it very hilarious. If you took it from them - even if they gave it back politely, another would be chewing a hole in the hose as you tried to refill their water, then resuming the water fight & spraying the others off of the ceiling, where they were climbing, and their tree nests. One fell 7’ or 8’ off the ceiling and landed on me, having been blasted by the hose the other had chewed. This was fine, as it was outdoors. Indoors, it would be very Cat in the Hat.p / Things 1 & 2. Not sustainable unless you have or intend to be 1-2 full time nannies; if you’re doing it, it doesn’t pay, but will cost a lot in damages. Most just don’t make good pets. It’s not about feralness, it’s about boredom. You can’t just give it koolaid & an ipad and expect it to chill. Mustelids are a different family than cats or dogs, constantly restless & seeking. Most (but not all) mustelids are quite social, raccoons especially so, ehich means if you aren’t paying attention they will find a way to get your attention or exploit your inattention. Please consider, instead, an exotic snake or lizard if it’s intended more for effect than rapport & empathic consideration of its needs & realist assessment of your ability to meet its demands. They’re less sensitive & emotional, more self-sufficient, less homewrecking and still make a statement. Many can go with you in public & will prove quite companionable. Boas & gopher snakes & iguanas are suitable, though not necessarily low maintenance. Or a bearded dragon if you prefer no stitches (iguanas are rough).

Modern people are spoiled babies who watch cute animal videos more than they live actual life, in most of these cases, I think. Having something novel makes them feel special, it’s often a sort of status symbol or alternately another reason confused teenage girls sometimes want to have a baby - they want something dependent on them so that thing will be forced to “love” and validate them out of its dependency. The more exotic, the more potent that validation. But a raccoon would be a rude awakening for any of them - much like its mustelid cousin the honeybadger, it mostly dgaf. 😅 If some raccies get a decent meal out of it though, good on everyone. 🤷♀ Better than shooting at them, at least. A more civilized if also deluded age.😂

I had a friend rescue a young raccoon whose head was stuck in a glass jar of applesauce it found in the trash. It was never really a pet, and one day my friend was playing a game of hide the treat... He put a dog kibble in one hand and put his hands to the raccoon to see if it would pick which fist the kibble was in. The raccoon picked the correct hand, and bit my friend to get him to drop the kibble... This started about two months of medical care to treat the bite wound, which punctured the cartilage around his finger joints.
