One of his most underrated films. I've seen it a couple times over the past 15 years, and the line that always stays with me is "I wonder if a memory is something you have or something you've lost." That is some deep, brilliant writing.

Sandy Dennis takes the cake in this movie for me. Sandy plays Gena's oldest friend who is currently a theatre actress. When she confronts Gena Rowlands (who was charming her husband at that moment) about how she turned on the charm to win over an old boyfriend (unconsciously), which Gena denies and then Sandy ends the conversation by saying "You should be the actress". This scene always makes my hair stand on end and brings tears to my eyes. I think this movie is Woody Allen's finest hour.

This film has always been one of my favorites. I love the score. Gene Hackman is brilliant in it. Gena Rowlands is so so good I'm this. I loved this film when younger and it resonates differently with me now many years later.

My favorite film. Vastly underappreciated. Yulin, Dennis, Buckley, and especially Hackman, all great minor roles.

I watched it at least ten times. I'd have to think what is my 2nd favorite film, but Another woman is an evidence at #1. I think, however small the role, it is a Gene Hackman outstanding performance. And the last scene when she reads his book...

@@maison33253 Absolutely. He and Gena Rowlands having an intimate drink together, Eric Satie's Gymnopedie playing; my favorite scene too believe it or not!

Thank you for putting this up here. It is my favourite of all his films and so little seen and under appreciated. It is a wonderful film that lingers long after it finishes. What stuns me is that Rowlands was not even nominated for any big awards for this and face it, women have done well come Oscar season, with Allen movies. Crazy. I was really suprised to learn that Allen most closely identifies with the Post character than all his other characters. About the movie, the use of Debussey's orchestration of Gymnopedie is also very memorable. A work of art is this film.

A gem of a film. Woody writes complex roles for women. Gena & Sandy’s scene was and still is memorable.

I was in my mid 20s when I discovered Woody. A late bloomer, I guess, because it was right about the time that Another Woman was released. I had seen the requisite masterpieces "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan" on video already, but Another Woman was on a completely different level than those. Darker, more haunting, and deeply psychological and intellectual in a way that the other two hadn't been. Performances, especially by Gena Rowlands, sublime. If you have never seen this, or any of the others that were made during this period (Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and September), I recommend you take a look.

I've always been called a hipster but this has always been my favourite woody allen movie for a long time - since we are doing the podcast and will be rewatching it later in the year it will be interesting to see if it will still have that top spot for me, that is an awesome bit of trivia that woody identifies with this character the most ... awesome, won't forget to talk about that, great videos as usual
@WoodyAllenPages8 жыл бұрын
+DonaldWunder yes. The exact quote is - everything I felt about turning fifty I put into that character. I have so much to say about that. Allen just had his first child. And Marion says things like - I should have been less cerebral. I shouldn't have blocked out my family. I wish I had kids. I think all that happened to Allen in the late 80s. And it probably led to the events of 1991 and him destroying his old life completely.
@Donwun8 жыл бұрын
again, that is a great insight, thanks for clarifying - you really have done some outstanding investigation with the finer details... you will always be the OMEGA woody allen fan and we will be bringing this up in future :)

I love the man, I love the author, and I love his whole filmography, without exception. He´s definitely a true modern classic, and one of the most gifted and very best ones (whatever he might say himself about it). ANOTHER WOMAN is absolutely sublime, by the way. One of his underrated secret masterpieces... Only for the (un)happy fews?!?

Damn. It would have been SO MUCH BETTER with Ben Gazzara. Holm ain't bad, but Gazzara would have been perfect. I'm almost mad I now know that he was in the running for the part.
@davidsheriff92743 жыл бұрын
If Woody had used both Ben Gazzara and Gena Rowlands it would have looked like he was trying to make a John Cassavetes move. Ian Holm was terrific in this role.
@Polo-po3 жыл бұрын
@@davidsheriff9274 Yes - Holm has the perfectly cosmopolitan dismissive distance that's of the character. Not so sure Gazzara could have been a thoroughly natural fit there w/o it being a bit more gruff, which changes the character.

I love this but number 11 you did not mention. It is the two minutes of body language and then the rest of the scene belonging to Sandy Dennis. Maybe you just assumed everyone knew her pub scene was acting at it's bedtwhich is unforgettable in an unremarkable flim

I disagree that this is an unremarkable film. To me, Dennis is good but hardly the best thing about it.
