I'm 20 now and tried playing when i was around 15 or so but now I just started to get serious about playing and my grandmother decided if I can learn to play my Stratocaster she'll pass down her Les Paul from the 60s that her dad bought when he was in the Air Force when she learned how to play and since she doesn't play since she retired from doing shows I'm the only one in the family now that is interested in playing

Had to quarantine due to COVID a couple weeks ago and after going stir crazy for being trapped in the house for just a day, I realized I have no excuse to not practice guitar. I obviously have ways to go but now I have developed a habit of practicing an hour per day, I can play 12 chords and can transition between most of them except for the B7 chord. Thank you JustinGuitar. If anyone else has any other beginner guitarist resources, let me know!

A lot of these are things that are helpful for anyone really! I found that recording myself to keep that progress is so helpful! I used to constantly record my progress. Now I don’t keep such close tabs on it, as my progress are songs or videos I record for KZbin, so I don’t always keep the initial recorded footage of me just playing without having edited stuff, but it’s still useful to see the progress, even if it’s not quite the same as just getting my practice routine or whatever I’m trying to figure out.

Great tips. As a beginner myself (1 year) I also try to be consistent about my routine and how long I practice. That's something really important, because if you practice 3h on monday and then 5 minutes on friday that won't cut it.

Too true! Especially with the consistency because I personally don’t have as much time to practice as I did before. But I do make sure to do so atleast 15-30 min. I just came back from a lesson and my teacher gave me the solo of “symphony of destruction” to learn for a change :D!

I never ever took any lessons on Guitar in my life. I just looked up bunch of chords online and watched instructional videos to many of my favorite songs. Then I started jamming for few months. Then I was starting to get the hang of it. And learning to play by ear is so much fun and convenient when you have perfect pitch! That's usually how I learn to play new songs.

Learn multiple songs at once! I always tried to learn Canon Rock since I started playing and I've been playing for a month. I initially thought it's best to focus on one song to get really good but learning multiple songs at once is actually more fun and lead to more improvement overall. It makes sense to try to play music you really like. Yeah learning multiple songs at once still helps me I just click shuffle on my music and if I like the song and the riff I write it down I currently have like 6 songs I want to learn and all of em in different difficulties I strongly suggest everyone to do this it’ll build you up plus it’s badass to know a good amount of riffs obviously a little later on you can learn the whole song

These are great tips! I’ve started relearning guitar recently and started recording myself and posting progress videos here on KZbin. It’s definitely nice to revisit those progress videos during the moments I feel like I’m not improving. I also created a similar video on my channel about how to deal with guitar rut. I suggest similar tips like taking a break and just playing something you know already. It’s all about balancing practice with play when learning!

One thing that I did when I first started was to see what power chords were involved in a song, and what riffs had them. I would go for those riffs first, and then do the harder riffs after. It also helps that I started on easy classic metal songs, so that gave me a real good boost in playing. And here's another interesting thing: when it comes to harder song, I take a look at what the chorus parts are, and see what the riffs are like. If they have a lot of power chords, I do that first, because the chorus is usually very repetitive, and is much easier to get down. Trivium is a prime example of this. Matt Heafy recently did a play through of their newest song Catastrophist, and I was actually inspired by both the first riff and chorus to make a really cool riff of my own from that. As you go along in your journey, you never know where inspiration for a new riff will come from

I agree absolutely with a lot you say. I didn’t know anything about guitar but I loved the concept of making an object without a voice made of wood and strings and giving it the ability to sing! I learned how to play notes, and practiced scales, then practiced a lot and made tons of mistakes but I’m always having fun! I have met a lot of great guitar players in the shops trying out guitars and I must say they were all very nice to me if I had a question on how to play a certain way they always took some time to help me, they had no egos just great people helping me learn. I hope to do the same. I’m still developing on the acoustic but I hope to move onto the electric eventually. I began about a half a year ago and I can play some basic popular rhythm chords, some parts of lead solos etc. and to think I didn’t know anything before! The key is to have fun, practice, and keep learning. It’s not a race, it’s an amazing journey that has no end for me😊!

When you were discussing the speed when learning songs, I realized that is what I've been doing. I've been using Ultimate Guitar's pro tabs to learn songs (you follow along with the song with the tabs on the screen) and gradually speeding up each time I get comfortable with a certain part. Im at a point now with my playing where I can do all of the verse and chorus work for most songs, but when I get to solos I just have to slow down for those. A big example for that for me was Tornado of Souls by Megadeth. :) glad to see im not the only one doing that

I noticed on your last livestream that you dont know Thunderstruck. Well here! All notes on a B string. 0407, do that 4 times. Then do 0508 four times. Do both 4 times again than do 12-0-10-0-9-0-10-0-9-0-7-0-7-0-7-0. To beggin, use hammer ons and pull offs if easier. When you feel good, try alternate picking. Good luck, Rachel! Did you ever have the following trouble as a beginner: We all know you want to use minimal force fretting notes. You yourself mentioned that trick where you fret a note near say the 5th fret and then slide you finger back towards the fourth fret. If it rings out true (Sustains?) you need to release pressure until it starts to buzz. Slide back closer to the 5th fret and voila, the note still rings true. But this technique won't work when sliding on a note or power chord up and down the guitar neck. If you hold the note/chord as lightly as referred to above, when you slide the note will go dead as there isn't enough tension on the note to keep it sustaining. So how do you find that happy medium of holding hard enough to get sustain but not so hard as to make sliding chords notes really slow as you are strangling the guitar neck as you slide. Thanks.

I think one thing many have not said that is important I think is to check out lots of guitar companies's guitars because there are now many cheaper and mid priced guitars that are pretty good for the price now and getting the right guitar or guitars for what you want to play and one or ones that feel good in your hands might inspire you to practice more. I am inspired to keep practicing a lot now that I have super good tones with my gear for what I want, That is for sure. I could not get the exact tone I wanted with my hollow body, but with a mic and the amps I have now, it sounds so good and makes me want to practice Jazz more for sure. If you want to practice improv I recommend easy backing tracks to jam over and over some simpler songs. I think practicing for little bits of time when you are starting and then moving to longer practice sessions later when you hands have gotten stronger is good if you want to be a more semi pro and/or more theory bassed player I think. Nice tips here though. I really think developing at my own pace instead of a teachers pace has been best for Jazz and some other stuff for me though. Flamenco is good to have a really teacher for though. FYI I think Rick Beato and Jens Larsen have some great lessons for music theory for guitar I think and some of their videos I super like are free even... yes I have seen so many other teachers on KZbin that were not for me.

As a long time guitar player who has taken some time off (a couple of years+) I'd suggest practicing scales. Pentatonic Major and minor scales are a good way to start when warming up. Play some of the riffs you are comfortable with, until you perfect them, or get close to it. Practice makes perfect. Jam along to backing tracks, especially basic chord patterns and try to solo over them using the knowledge you have or have gained recently. Every time you pick up your guitar, WARM UP! This can be done by just using finger stretching exercises. I like to warm up with the basic Pentatonic scale every day when I pick up my guitar, and then jam along to some of my favorite tunes. I've had times when I've stopped for a long time only to come back and develop my calluses, which allowed me to jam for longer stretches of time. Finally, never give up! If you are trying to master a particularly challenging riff or solo, take some time off (not too long), but the most important part is to allow yourself to SLOW IT DOWN! Play it at a slower speed so you can hear all the notes involved in that sequence or solo. Slowing things down is VERY beneficial, as you get more comfortable, you can speed it up and try to nail it. Just stick with it. Find new exercises you haven't tried before and work on them, keep working at it and you will be amazed at how much better you can get. Again, never give up!

Also there's this misconception that you need to start on an acoustic guitar which is bs. If you like the sound of acoustic that's fine go for it, but if you're into punk or rock or the sound of an electric start on an electric. If you're not into what you're playing and the sounds coming for your instruments its gonna be a lot harder to stick to it

For the past couple of years I've been walking every day for two hours. I lost a lot of weight, but recently suffered severe tendonitis in my left foot, leaving me unable to walk for about a month. Every time I walk, it comes back. Like knives in my heel. With stretching excercises, it's better, but I'm giving up walking. I will approach guitar the same way, and I think you have the right idea. Besides I LOVE watching you play. You look like you're coming when you play guitar, and that joy and pleasure in playing music is the only way a musician can continue to play throughout the years. It isn't worth it without that. So, I've decided to watch every video you make, and when you teach a lesson I will save it and practice it. Thank you for what you do. BTW, THAT is a gorgeous guitar. I love everything about the look of it. A month ago I bought a blue Jackson JS22 archtop superstrat that I am IN LOVE with, and I play every day, but honestly your blue Ibananez may be prettier. It's a fascinating looking guitar. I bet it feels amazing to play. You have great taste in guitars, and you are a beautiful girl. I love your videos, thank you for everything you do.
