I think the buggiest issue is because wwe won they tell the history of it and really try to make wcw look awful. Yes it had its issues but there was lots of good too. I don’t think Vince will ever quite get over someone had the audacity to not just challenge but beat him at a time. Only have to look at HHH beating Sting to see it still hurts Vince’s ego.

One thing that people say caused the end of WCW was the guaranteed contracts, the idea that greedy wrestlers were getting Turner’s money and not putting in the effort. The Death of WCW has an interesting take: because WCW was gaining so much money-they were making bank-you could feasibly argue that the wrestlers were actually underpaid.

I'm old enough that I remember WCW. I watched the climb, the domination in the ratings and the fall. What killed WCW was they had no idea how to get out of the nWo/Sting story. They put the title on Sting and then...nothing. There was no concept of what to do with the story. How to bring it all home. Should the nWo break up? Should Surfer Sting return? They built a 14 month story on Sting winning the title from Hogan, then had Sting drop it the very next night on Nitro. They had no ending to the story so each week they just tried random shit, hoping something would stick. And let's not forget the nWo story was everything WCW was about then. Everyone on the card was involved in the story one way or another. Then in trying to recapture what they did the previous 14 months, they kept introducing storylines with no go-home in mind.

Finally, someone who doesn't just point to one thing or a lazy narrative. Fair points, they definitely made magic at times - even did things that WWE copied, but looks like they were a victim of their own newfound success and didn't know how to handle it . It's like the lazy movie sequel that just banks on the originals ideas, name and fame. Love that you bring up starrcade 97 cause most marks will say put the blame on the botched spot as the reason that match was dissapointing but the match itself failed to build momentum and didn't setup the finish, so the botch didn't kill it - by comparison at that years WM Tyson counted way too fast and that spot was probably more egregious. It seemed they forget to tell a story within the match all they cared for was hyping it up (did a great job there) and the next plot point which is the finish -which I don't hate but timing is everything and having patrick as the designated heater. Anyways, not to go any longer but again to your point they also did the same with Goldberg, they didn't know where to go after he won the belt even if he's match with Hogan delivered

Gotta disagree on the Nitro Girls. The concept was unique for wrestling, but you can’t take away from what WWF was doing with Sunny, Sable, and Terri in 96, which wasn’t just “valets,” but using sex to sell merch, magazines, etc. - basically the origin of the WWE Divas model. Remember Sunny’s claim to fame was that she was the most downloaded celeb on AOL, which in the early days of the net was innovative in its own right, and up until the Horsewomen’s rise, it was easy to see Sunny’s footprints in WWE and other organizations. Outside of the Extreme Expose thing briefly in ECW, I don’t think the Nitro Girls concept had any lasting influence beyond 1999.

It doesn't really mix well with the modern world of social media and the new generation of wrestlers willing to discuss everything about what is going on backstage. 3 More: 1. "Tony caused fans to switch over the RAW by spoiling Mick Foley's title win." He didn't cause fans to switch over, Nitro going to commercial break did. 2. "WCW failed because they didn't want to make new stars." I think Booker T, Scott Steiner, Big Show (Giant), DDP, Sting & Ric Flair (although started in NWA) would like a word with you. Also WCW gave better exposure for guys like Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero, Saturn, Mysterio & Jericho. 3. "Vince was going to make a WCW show during invasion but the Booker T vs. Buff Bagwell match was so bad, he didn't think they'd survive on their own." The match was MEANT to be bad. Why would the bookers want you to cheer a WCW match? If anyone thinks Booker & Bagwell were competing to their full potential, you obviously didn't watch enough WCW. (Yes, this is more WWE related).
