I’ve had 2 xterras. 2002 had it 13 years 2015 pro4x had it to this day. So i drive an Xterra for 22 years now. These trucks are bullet proof. Apart from brakes and common repairs i can say without a doubt that i love this truck. If they come back with Xterras again with the same built process i will buy another one in a few years for sure. Best kept secret= Nissan XTerra. Hands down

Xterra is starting to blow up in popularity. And rightfully so....funny that I think they are getting more popular years after they were discontinued. I've had my 2011 Xterra since it was new and it's bomb proof. 95k miles so far. Just replaced spark plugs myself. It's really easy to work on and is like you said "bomb proof".
@AllThingsOverlanding

Yeah, agreed! No idea why they weren't more popular in the past. Jeeps and Toyotas sort of rule the scene, but when you can pick one of these up for significantly less and they're still super reliable, I would expect them to be more popular. Thanks for the comment!

I've got a 2011 Pro-4x with 102,000 miles on it. I love it (except the fuel economy of course). I have my eye on a new/newer 4Runner TRD offroad but the insanely high prices of the 4Runner - both new and used - keeps my paid off Xterra in my garage.

Agree exactly on all points. Some things you didn’t mention: 1. Outward visibility (as compared to other off road vehicles). Superb! I test drove a Toyota FJ. Outward visibility=Abrams Tank. Sheesh! 2. Road manners. FAR better than any Toyota product. No need to mention Jeep. Excellent roadability for a 4,300 lb. truck. 3. Simple, honest interior. Lack of pretentious “Jeep-like” wonderboy off road styling cues. FJ is ridiculous. Jeep even worse. I don’t need a hokey “angle gauge” to tell me I’m on a steep slope. I don’t need constant reminders of how capable my car is. Manually adjustable seats! I’ll be back with some things I *don’t* like (nothing is perfect).
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, great points. The FJ cruisers are reliable trucks but the quirkiness definitely hinders visibility and functionality in a lot of ways. Agreed on the other points too. While the Nissan does have some quirky stuff (vertical rear door handles for example) they aren't annoying or over the top. I personally love the interior because it's well laid out and perfect for long term use and customizability.

I cant wait to try it out. I did have to replace the alternator . Easy simple fix. Take off the tire and inner wheel well and there it is . Took me a hour and a half and I was back driving it . Get it online becouse parts houses will charge you around 265.00 for it and I paid 111.00 for a brand new one.

Original owner of a 2005 Off Road model. Ordered from the factory so I could get a manual. Only disappointment was the rear suspension bottoming on those hard bumpstops. Everything else was great and I've never regretted my decision. Started modifying after I paid it off and I plan to let my kid have it in a few years; still runs great, just have to take care of her. I compare the 2nd Gen Xterra to the current 4Runner, and it boggles my mind how my 15 year old vehicle still has more useful and utilitarian features. Unfortunately, I doubt Nissan will bring back the X. I'm holding my breath now for the new Bronco.
@AllThingsOverlanding

Agree with all your points. They are such great trucks and way underrated. I think the new Bronco's look cool, but the price point puts me off (because I abuse my truck). We are on our second Xterra. The first one was a 05, 6sp mt with all the options that were available at the time. When we got it in 08 it had 60 000 kms on it. Very solid truck! Only thing we had to do was have the clutch replaced at 98 000 kms. In 2015 we traded the 05 in for a 2015 P4X. The 05 had 140 000kms when we traded it in. Only issue was the timing chain guides were starting to go as we could hear a whining in the engine. The 2015 has had a few upgrades, ARB bumper, Smittybilt winch, OME suspension upgrade. Like you state the mileage that the Xterra gets is shit....LOL.

Just subbed. I drove my Xterra off the lot in August 2001. It's still under 110k, but it's had a few epic moments. Blasting through 39' of fresh snow, gone coast to coast a few times, went up and down some extremely goatish trails and could do it all empty or loaded to the gills. I wanted a vehicle that could handle my rockhounding and gold prospecting shenanigans. It can. About the only change I made was to swap out the original equipment stereo and install a bluetooth ready double din. I threw away the rear seats at least a decade ago, never used them. I fell in love with the color, sandstone. I've only seen one other Xterra in that color.

Have personally owned 3 Nissans and 4 Toyota’s you can definitely tell the difference in quality and attention to detail between the two. The nissans are cheaper to buy but in my experience definitely need more repairs and maintenance. The latest thing I bought was a cheap pathfinder and I’ve been enjoying it but it doesn’t compare to the 4 runner. It’s just a different level. You can get a great deal though on a Nissan truck and put some sweat equity into it and have a reliable vehicle for very low $$ though.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, exactly. It’s interesting to me because the way I look at it, there’s wear and tear by age of components and then wear and tear via mileage. So, while the Toyota’s are better built vehicles, you have to go 4-6 years older and usually about double the mileage to pick up something in the same price range as a Nissan (I bought an 05 Xterra with 94k miles for about $7k and was looking at 99 4Runners with 150-180k for about $10-12k. To me, even if they are better bill and you can get let’s say twice the mileage out of them, it was still a better financial deal to buy the six year newer Nissan with about half the mileage for 3 to 5 grand less and I’ve owned it now for four years and probably only spent $500 to $700 on maintenance items including brakes, radiator, ball joints, etc. I think it just depends on the deal you can find and what your preferences are. I’m also biased because I’ve always liked and owned Nissans, 😀. Thanks for the comment!

We had a 2002 xterra which we traded in for a Tundra. Though the Tundra is great, we missed the xterra. When I went to help our son buy a car at a Nissan dealers, we discovered it was the last year of production and they only had a few left. 2015, late Aug. I wanted the Pro but they were out... so we got the V 6, 4WD. We love it and will probably keep it forever. We traded in a 2 yr old RAv4 for it... When I found out they were stopping production I grabbed one as even though the RAV4 had more "luxury" additions- I'd rather have th Xterra with a just a few amenities. So I bought it. The RAV4 was ok, but not enough clearance for some of the roads I had to go over for work and the xterra is perfect... so...

I have a 5th gen 4Runner, every once in a while I think about getting rid of it and picking up a used Xterra for like half the price, haha. The thing I love about the Xterra is the 4L V6, it's so much better than the one in the Toyota. I haven't driven the Xterra, but I had a Frontier as a rental a few years ago, and I remember being impressed with how gutsy it felt. Nobody in history has ever felt that way about a Toyota 4.0, LOL. It makes pretty much no power under 3K RPM, and sounds like a blender full of ball bearings.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, that sounds right. Don't get me wrong, I love Toyotas. However, deep down, I'm a Z and Nissan guy, so when I started getting into Overlanding, my only Nissan option was an Xterra. The more I researched, the more I realized that compared to a similar Toyota, the Nissan was SO much cheaper. And, after more than 4 years of owning my Xterra, this thing still starts up every time, pulls hard, runs great, has a 9 speaker Rockford Fosgate system, and is just a blast to own. Again, no knocks against Toyota, but used, my opinion is that a Nissan beats a Toyota hands down. Thanks for the comment!
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 4 жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOverlanding honestly I think the 4Runner is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but the drivetrain just drives me nuts, there's not one time that I drive it that I'm not frustrated with the engine's lack of usable power. The main driving force in buying it was that I knew it would maintain a good resale value even with high miles, and I just basically wanted something that would just "work" for the next 10 years or so. I did briefly consider the Xterra when I got this two years ago, however I had a friend that had one a years back that had a few grand worth of engine issues around 120k miles. Timing chain and guides I think are an issue on these? That kind of turned me off on these, plus I know a few other people that have had significant problems with are Nissan's. Anyway, he got it fixed and ended up keeping the thing to about 200,000 miles, he moved to California and by that time it was rusted out from living its whole life in Massachusetts, so he ended up trading it in and getting a new one in 2015 since that was his last chance to do so. Maybe I'll do some research. Right now Toyota values are through the roof. My 4Runner is a 13 Trail Edition with 110k miles on it, and and it's still showing a value of between 18 to 20k. I just paid it off a few weeks ago, so now all I see is a pile of cash sitting out in the street, haha. Dream vehicle would be a JLUR, but I'm not made of money so that's out until they've been on the used market for about 10 years. The new Bronco looks like it's going to be cool, but same as far as price.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 жыл бұрын
@@trailrunnah8886 Yep, agree on all points! The timing chain guides are plastic and can get chewed through. Mine are still stock and I'm at 137K miles. I've heard of people often having to replace them around 100-120K but then I've also heard of people with 200K miles and no problems. I'm just waiting until it becomes a problem. Eventually, when this one dies, I'll buy a 2010 or newer Xterra most likely and swap parts over and just keep going, :D. Those Jeeps and Bronco's do look nice, but I feel the same way. Too rich for my blood. Plus, I know people who have had those newer Jeeps and they're super capable, but not so much on the reliability front. Not to mention how much cool gear I can buy with the savings on my rig, :D. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hey Sarah! Good question. I would definitely go with the 08. Here are a few reasons. The second gens have more power, more torque, and better reliability out of the 4 L motor. Also, your components are 4 years newer and you’ll get almost 50k miles before you catch up to the miles already on the first gen. If the price disparity was bigger, I might say different but for only a couple grand more, you get a lot of advantages. Hope that helps!

If you aren't doing any super crazy offroading/rock crawling and you want significantly better gas mileage, something like a Subaru Legacy or Crosstrek is probably a good option. Yeah, that is one sucky piece of maintenance. A lot of people will do it themselves and then it’s not too bad aside from the Rome and effort. However, some people never even have to do it. I have 133k and still haven’t had to mess with it, but probably will one day.

Agree. We're owned 4 Nissans and 4 Toyota vehicles. 2 xterras (have the 2015), 2 Rav4s (just a car posing as a 4WD) a Camry and now a 2020 Altima SR. a Toyota Corona (1970's), and a Tundra we still have. We've found no real advantage of the Toyota over the Nissans at all. In fact all the Toyotas had interior moldings that tended to fall off. One we found the same day we bought it lying on the back floor day one of new car. Never would stay put.. The Nissans have been tough reliable, low maintenance,, lower than the Toyotas with fewer problems. Plus as you mentioned you can get a lot more amenities cheaper. Our Altima wa quite expensive with the add ons making it over $30,000 pre tax. But the Camry didn't even offer some and would have been more costly to add when offered. Oddly Toyota didn't offer some packages with certain paint jobs... which was weird to me. Like get a black one you can't have a package, but buy a white or red one you can get the package.. Just too silly. We have not seen any advantage with Toyota and actually the Nissans seems to have more and last a long time. Over 200,000 miles with their little Nissan 2 door pickup we have back in the 90's. We sold it and noticed the guy running around in it for years after... no idea where it is now. Nissan makes a better car than they get credit for, and the others are over rated. Our son had a Civic and the window cranks handle fell off. Not impressed with those either and eventually ended up in the junk yard.. partly his fault by about 10 years.

Yeah, I think Toyota makes great trucks. I'm just biased because I've had a great history with all my Nissans and the fact that I can get a newer Nissan with half the miles for about the same price as a similar Toyota made the decision really easy for me. Thanks for the comment!

We have an 06' off road, manual tranny. It's my wife's daily driver. We have 33's and an OME lift. It's served us well, we did Imogene Pass a few years ago and got 20mpg chugging along I70. I really had to consciously work for that mpg, but it did it. Mostly crappy gas mileage usually, lol. Our plan is to swap it out for a last-year 15' pro-4x next year and do the same mods. My wife loves driving something that isn't cookie cutter. Not many of these in off road trim around our neck of the woods(NE Kansas). One thing that should be mentioned is that the first few years had the timing gear reliability issues that can lead to catastrophic engine demise. Luckily, ours had this sorted out as a factory warranty repair($2k service). A handy wrencher could do it in the garage tho. The later years don't have the same potential problem.

Let's hope my 05 keeps on chugging, haha. It's at 132K right now and still starts up everytime and runs like a top. Thanks for the comment and good luck with the '15! Getting closer and closer to nabbing one. The list of 'no frills', genuinely capable off-road vehicles gets shorter every year. To me, the Xterra was Nissan's spin on the original 'Jeep' philosophy, and in a lot of ways, I see as something of spiritual successor to the original Cherokee XJ. Likewise, it was more like the original Nissan Pathfinder when it was released, then the replacement Pathfinder of that era. Kind of a cave man throwback... as the world was going to crossovers and more and more car-like SUVs, including Nissan, there was this final body on frame, truck-based SUV. I am not a soccer mom. I am not driving an SUV because I am embarrassed to drive a minivan. I live in Colorado and intend to use as intended. Loaded up for camping trips with a kayak on the roof, going down rough mountain roads. I want the Pro-4x version because damned right I'll use that locking diff. So for someone with this kind of taste in vehicles, it's kinda dark days. But in a very real way, gone for 5 years now, I feel like the Xterra was the last SUV ever designed with someone like me in mind. The market has moved on in other directions and SUVs now are really just 'cool looking' mini vans and station wagons of the 80's and 70's. There are still capable offroaders out there, but the trend is obvious. Yeah, I know, cheap interior of cloth and plastic... you have any idea how much mud and dog hair I'm going to get in this thing? This isn't my BMW, I don't want leather seats in this. Hell, can we strip the interior down more? I wouldn't mind one I could just hose out like an old CJ. So what I am saying is that their design didn't give a rat's behind about 'lavish interior', but they did seem concerned about frame flex off road. When was the last time a new design from anyone had priorities like that? Yet those are the priorities _I_ need for the job I want the truck to do. It may be an odd thing to say as praise, but this was one of the last 'big dumb truck' SUVs, and dammit, I like 'big dumb truck' SUVs. 4Runner still in the running (forerunning?), but I am finding better deals on Xterras and about to pull trigger and declare Nissan the winner of this round. Love the Toyotas too, but as of right now on used market in these years (5-10 years old), I think I am buying more truck per dollar with the Xterra. Just a bang for the buck thing really. If anyone wants to talk me out of it, I'll listen, but I am _this_ close to calling it and nabbing that Pro-4x I found around the corner... I won't ask Fletch to talk me out of it, his list hit most of the points that led me to this truck in the first place. It looks to me that if you have a certain priority set for an SUV, Xterras have a specific focus that might hurt their used value, and have become serious bang for buck trucks for people who's priorities match. As was pointed out, yeah, 4Runners are great, but... you have to get older and more miles for same money. It would be one thing if Nissan sucked compared to Toyota, but... they don't. Nissan has been making good, reliable trucks for a long time. So the more research I do, the more obvious a 2010-2015 Xterra is a perfect fit for me.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 жыл бұрын
Hey David, I think you're exactly right (my bias aside). I honestly love my Xterra and it's super capable and reliable. However, I'm sure a 4Runner is probably slightly more reliable. That being said, I can't imagine it's SO much more reliable that it would make sense to buy a much older one with much higher mileage. In my opinion, there are two main factors to consider in wear on a vehicle. Mileage (wear on components) and Time (age of components). The older a vehicle gets, the more chance of something breaking. The more mileage and use a vehicle gets, the more chance of something breaking. So, again, even if the 4Runner is slightly better built, at what point does that outweigh the extreme cost difference? If you can get a 2010-2015 for $3-5K less (maybe more) than a slightly older 4Runner with more miles, I don't think it's a risk at all. Any ways, excited to see what you end up with and if you get an Xterra, let me know!
@davidsears5176
@davidsears5176 4 жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOverlanding I will make up meaningless numbers to prove the point... but if Toyota were 10% more reliable (what does that even mean, but bear with me) but at same price point is 30% older with 30% more miles, the age and wear negate any advantage Toyota has. This isn't Toyota vs. 1970s Fiat. This is Nissan, they don't suck. I've had 2 pathfinders... an old 1st gen 2 door (87? 88?), and a mid 90's 4 door. Those trucks were abused. Flogged. All they did was smile at the abuse, happy to get the attention. Tacoma vs Frontier is a fight. I feel comfortable giving them the #2 spot on my favorite list of truck makers, 1/2 step behind Toyota, and well ahead of Ford, Chevy and others. So it's not like I feel I am suffering with Nissan build quality. And most importantly, it fits. This truck was designed for offroad use by outdoor enthusiasts. And the list of vehicles designed for this role gets shorter every year. Maybe I was harsh on soccer moms as the cliched example, but that really is the 'problem'. What it seems happened is that in the 90s people started consciously buying the wrong vehicles for the wrong jobs. In the 70s and 80s people with larger families drove station wagons and mini vans. Somewhere in 80s those vehicles became 'uncool'. Consider the original Vacation movie with Chevy Chase and 'family truckster'

@@AllThingsOverlanding Well somewhere along the way of making these posts I realized I already made my decision. I'll let you know what I get and keep you updated on mods. I was pretty sure it was what I wanted, but the deeper I got into research the more solid that opinion was. I am sure there are soccer moms and dads that hate Xterras. Truth is? As a suburban stationwagon, it's actually not very good at that job. But as an actual sport utility vehicle? Top 5 at any price point sound fair? Then of those on that elite offroading list... guess who wins the bang for the buck battle? I will not insult Toyotas or Jeep Wranglers, yes, they are great and good choices as well. But truck per dollar... 8 year old pro-4x at these prices? It's like a bar tab in Mexico, your dollar just goes further here. And as it happens, rough roads in Baja are pretty likely in the truck's future... My final debate now is grab the 2012 Pro-4x Auto I found and really like, or hold out for a Pro-4x Manual. But those almost seem unicorns. Found 2 on cars.com, and neither are within a 1000 miles of me. I prefer manual, but could live with an auto. And Pro-4x package is more important to me than manual. Anyway, closing book on other options. Past which vehicle to get and into which exact Xterra to get, and how important is a manual transmission to me? I am the target audience for this thing, it actually was built with people like me in mind. Nothing left to do but get one and drive it like the engineers and Nissan intended. Which is to say, not gingerly. I moved from AZ to CO a few months ago, and every day I look out my window and see those Rockies. I think of all the old abandoned mine roads, great views and great camp sites out there that I haven't even heard of, let alone discovered yet. It's a nice Sunday, I should be out there right now... maybe next weekend... how bad do I want a stick again? I'm already listing and sorting mods I plan.... front bumper replacement, winch, awning, CB... I'll make a beast out of her.
