Great video, as usual. I have a 08 Xterra with 265,000 miles. So far everything is going fine, I think I'll make it well past 300k before I hit something big. Your channel has been a true gift to me as I'm not mechanically inclined at all, yet your vids are very clear and I've been able to follow along easily, for example just a few days ago was able to tackle brakes/rotors with confidence because of your clear guidance, and soon I'm going to put on foglights. :)

Hi I'm glad to hear that at 265,000 miles your car is or "was" running good. I noticed this comment to the video is about a year old. How is the Xterra doing? I only ask because I have a 2007 Xterra with 219,000 miles on it. I've had it only a year and still runs really good though I am hearing that high pitch whining the last couple weeks. Only one owner before me but with so many miles on it, I'm getting scared about how long I have before something big goes wrong. I am very diligent on the fluids being checked and changed if needed and oil exactly on time but I love taking road trips and I drive a lot of freeway miles daily, so I'm really glad to that you have that many and going strong cause everything I read said about 200,000 is about all I will get out of the truck. But I absolutely 💯 love this SUV and don't want to get rid of it, as I'm a country girl and love the backroads, camping, kayaking, you name it and this SUV kicks ass off roads. So thank you for sharing, I feel like mine could have several more road trips left, she drives beautiful still! "Ry the car guy" Thank you so much for all your video's, you've helped me with several little updates/Makeover project's! Your so clear and thorough and it makes everything so much easier

@@cassandrawilson552 I still own the Xterra and it's still going strong/fine. I do a lot of doordash/ubereats/grubhub food deliveries, so I can really put on the miles quick, that said while the Xterra gets decent gas mileage for an suv, it didn't make sense for me to keep using it as my main delivery vehicle, so I also picked up a Camry for deliveries, therefore I haven't been as hard on the Xterra for the past year or so. However, I loaned it to my younger brother who had need of a vehicle, and he has been driving it steadily, no problems. He also does some deliveries, but nowhere near as much as I do. I'll have to check what the speedometer is now, but so far the Xterra has performed like a champ. It makes a slight rattle now, but that's a cosmetic thing to do with a loose heat shield. One of these days I need to get down there and cinch the heat shield tight to prevent the rattle, lol sounds bad but not really a problem.

2008 Xterra is now my secondary vehicle that I use for plowing and as a back up 4WD vehicle in the winter if I need it. Years ago I was afraid of the SMOD so I took off the transmission cooler lines from the radiator and installed an aftermarket transmission cooler that I connected the lines onto. I live in the snowbelt / salt belt of Central NY so rusting is a big problem. I had rust thru of oil pan, transmission lines and the rear diff cover. Replacement cover and oil pan were flex seal coated to avoid any future rust damage. Rodents are a big problem in my rural area. I had mice get into the air box and eat the air filter. Particles of air filter material got onto the MAF sensor and the car did not run right. Mesh screening needed to be placed over the air inlet tube to prevent rodent access. Early in the ownership of the vehicle, all of the heat shield covers on the exhaust system got loose and rattled incessantly. They were all removed. I would love to find a replacement rear hatch door as parts of it are rusting away due to some sort of a water leak the destroyed the locking mechanism and froze up the wiper motor. Other than that, it has been a dependable truck.

I have a 2010 Xterra with Automatic. She has 255,000 miles. The only thing so far I had to replace (my son in law did it for me) was the rear axle. We just got one from a junk yard. My husband thought it was the transmission so we got a transmission with 72,000 miles on it. But it was indeed the rear axle. My husband is not a car dude. I am a car girl and I like to do things myself. He replaced my window in the Xterra and I know he didn’t put all the screws back in so now it rattles. I do need to make repairs on her and I came across a video of you repainting the bumpers and grill. She definitely needs some love since I got her back from my youngest daughter (not a responsible car person of other peoples cars). I love my Xterra and I got her used with 75,000 miles on her and I have had her for 8 years Aug this year. You definitely worried me about the SMOD since I have an automatic but I will definitely be checking on that a lot more since she has so many miles. Thank you for your videos! I know I will be looking at them a lot since I need to repair her.

Good list of things to expect on an Xterra. From what I have read, the timing chain issue is only a problem from 2005 to 2010 after which Nissan finally changed the timing chain guides to better (metal, not plastic)material. Luckily it was still under the powertrain warranty so Nissan took care of that for free but then at 110,000 miles it did it again and I paid $1100 to have the tensioners replaced again. Also the SMOD, luckily I heard about that before it happened so I got a new radiator and no problems. I now have a 2012 Xterra PRO 4X and love it. Although I had two cats replaced within 6 months of each other and now I need a new rack and pinion. Love your videos and my Xterra!

SMOD hit my Xterra around 140K miles. For anyone who thinks it's affecting them, my Xterra didn't go anywhere when I shifted into Drive. I restarted the car and it worked fine for a few days. Then it happened again. I was dumb and didn't think much of it, kept restarting and things worked again. Then my car wouldn't work in reverse... I knew something was bad. Then it wouldn't shift higher than 3rd gear. Needed to do a full transmission rebuild and cost about $4,000.... believe Ry the car guy when he talks about SMOD. Very real issue with the 05-10 Xterras and if you haven't had SMOD yet, please look into it and save yourself the money and hassle. Thank you Ry the Car Guy, your channel is awesome!

Also, Xterra's built in the PNW, WA or OR specifically, were subject of defective products lawsuit. Most of those vehicles however were higher mileage before problematic, resulting in little to no recover. I was offered a $1000 coupon for a brand-new Nissan of choice because my Xterra odometer was approaching 300k miles. Sure, I shopped around, but having upgraded the suspension, exhaust, power steering and replacing the ECM on recall, I decided on the rebuilt version of the same engine from Japan in March 2020. The pandemic was full throttle then. Already, parts were difficult to obtain, but before the first snow in late November, my winter ride was ready. 5k installed resolved any maintenance issues. The plug-in engine included a new radiator and an oil pump. Since then, the camshaft sensors were replaced. Any vehicle driven requires routine maintenance. So, thank you so very much for your instructional vids. Best wishes, Wen

I didn't see it on the radiator cap but transmission fluid was a much lighter almost pink and a little frothy. I found out that it destroyed my transmission because the car would not start and popped all kinds of communication errors like wheel speed. 2. Also thanks for tip about cabin filter I'm definitely going to change mine.

Yes, I've replaced the clutch and things like wheel bearings, tie rod ends etc. But the engine is still going strong. I cannot stress the value of simply changing the fluids regularly. I go a maximum of 6 to 7 000 kms between oil changes and the Xterra is repaying me in kindness. I like your videos. I bought my 05, in 05 here in Phoenix. I have a 05 Frontier LE, crew, 4x4 . I now have 186k, and hope to make it last forever. At 135k, I was looking at things I could do form preventative maintenance. I found out about the radiator issue some had "smod", so I decided to just change it out with a new one, $72 with free delivery on ebay. I did have the oil pressure sensor which just showed as zero, which I ignored for a year because it was $70 and I knew the pressure was fine, but just decided to finally change it. Amazing what they charge for a little sensor that screws into the engine. I also changed all the fluids like you advised and do so every 60k or so, so I think it is something I will be doing again shortly. I have also now decided to change some front end parts, because I have some time, and have not had to do yet, so I have been searching for videos to change control arms, tie rods and wheel bearings, getting tips and tricks. I was curious about the catch can video which I had never came across till checking out more of your videos. Now I am wondering if it is something I should get for my truck. Inspected the pistons. Sourced valves through a machine shop. FYI nissan does not make replacement valves that fit the vq40. If you replace chains and guides use OEM replacement. Your videos are very helpful and through. This format is a good idea and the visuals help a lot. My 2006 manual xterra had a broken tensioner and it took us over a week to figure it out, it didn't make that sound but a different one and it wouldn't accelerate.

I am doing a rear wheel bearing hub and by the time it’s all said and done just get a new axle it’s actually less heartache that taking it all apart and replacing everything one by one. While pressing everything off a managed to warp the backing plate now I have to buy a new one. Take it from me it’s easier to buy a complete axle shaft than to just try and replace the bearing.

I have had to replace the cam sensors twice both sides. Doing a rear axle seal now if you doing any heavy towing you have to replace them too. I’m also replacing a bad rear wheel bearing hub while I’m at it on the other side. I did the radiator swap before the 90k miles years ago before it went out. 165k still going strong. 2005 se 2wd

My 05 frontier has whined ever since I got it a few years ago, not this bad... I'm not planning on fixing it at this point. Also I have the real oil pressure gauge which is great!! I've never had it in a mechanic shop, I've done some little odds and ends myself... 130k miles...
@tylerfochtman15784 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these reassuring and reaffirming resources you have presented us. Helps to know the things I want to tackle are an actual thing and are the actual cause of the issue I am experiencing. I have the low oil light on at idle after warm up with the real gauge, so it's the oil gallery gasket. And I also have the secondary timing chain whine. I hope I didn't do more harm by putting some Lucas oil crap down my variable valve solenoid. It hasn't done that grindy thing as much that sounds like a broken water pump, but I also have an exhaust leak p1283 code. I had the p420 code and did the passenger cat and that cleared. Then got the driver's side bank 2 lean a/f sensor code so I plan to replace the three remaining cats on Wednesday with the cali carb catalytic converters I got from rock auto for like 220 each. Oem are like 700 for each one, and there are 4... hope this fixes my restriction/exhaust leak type issue I am having with hiccuping and rumbling under my feet. Wish me luck.

But there is one problem i am having that i can not find a video on .. and that is a body lift ... i guess who ever had it before me lifted the body n not the frame n only lifted the back... well when the person i got it from before lifted the front to make it even ... well my truck is all over the place i hit a bump it sways side to..... i drive in the wind n its almost impossible to stay on the road .. The sway bar.... ball joints.... control arms... bushing ....is all brand new .. and I'm still having a problem.... yes ive thought about just taking out the lift.... but i dont know how .. And i don't know if they moved any other parts on truck to do the body lift .. And not only that i love the lift i would really like the swaying to stop .. its a good truck.. i love and i know there is some work to do to it and I'm willing to do it.. Cuz i know it will pay off... Is there any way you or any one could help me figure this out... Please Im not trying to take it to the shop ..Please

Enjoy all your videos they have been a great help with doin different repairs to my Xterra. Have you changed the secondary timing chain guides? Does the whining go away or is it constant? Sounds like the guides are going on mine, however it's not as whiny or goes away after driving it more than 20 minutes. Any thoughts? Thanks and keep the videos coming.

Another common issue for people who off-road the X and go “full send” is, weak engine mounts and front diff (R180). They kinda break easily. But that’s for heavy off-road use that includes jumping and pedal to the metal in 4lo.

I was looking at a 2wd Xterra a few years ago with about 140k miles on it. I asked the owner if she had done the timing belt recently and she produced a receipt for a new timing CHAIN installed at 100k, she said the dealer had told her it was coming up on being due so she decided to have it done the next time she went in. The dealer must have felt guilty because the repair did not show up on the Carfax.

It’s bad for the environment to change the fluids before it’s necessary no matter who did it I just agree you can pull your dipsticks and check your colors and your smells and see if they’re bad I have a 2000 Xterra is never had the transmission fluid changed still runs like a charm still shifts like a charm so I wouldn’t go by mileage things or anything else go by smells looks and other things like how big of a stain that makes on your driveway

Another issue I would add, although it doesnt happen to all Xterras, but the issue would be rusted roof problems where the roof rack meets the metal roof, especially located at the bolt connections.

I've learned a lot from your channel and I like your new top 5 format video. Thanks! I have a 2012 Xterra Pro4X. Bought it brand new back then. 92k miles currently. I have followed the maintenance manual very closely, but it doesn't say to ever replace transmission or differential fluids, except in the "optional premium service" section, so I've never done it. What interval do you recommend?
@jaroslawkanski71804 жыл бұрын
Front, rear, and transfer case fluids are cheap, and there is no reason not to change them. I would recommend using the Amsoil gear oil every 30K miles or so. While doing the rear differential oil, also check the differential breather on the right side of 'an egg'. It can get clogged, and might lead to blowing your seals in the rear axle. Enjoy!
