I like the idea of siestas and Sundays being quiet. We have become obsessed with consumerism in the west. We need to return to a more natural pace of life.
@SwissNetHawk6 ай бұрын
I agree to a certain extent, but is it normal to watch TV, eat and drink and drive a car every day of the week - even on Sundays - but tell others to refrain from doing things on Sunday just so you can have your own peace and quiet? Sunday off was invented by the Catholic Church to allow people to attend Sunday services. Fewer and fewer people are doing this. Sunday rest is not a natural thing, it was invented by people and can also be abolished by people. But I agree with you that we as humanity place far too much value on consumption. But is going to the movies with the whole family on a Sunday consumption or culture?
@Gusakiy26 күн бұрын
No, we are not. We need to keep on evolving, on our jobs, on our self development and careers. What humanity dont need is a silly people who just "tired of working" and need some rest. At the middle of the freakin day! this is madness and stupidity at its finest.

Cost of living, including the price of properties and food, is higher in the UK, and winters are throughly miserable, cold and dark, our food is also unhealthy for the most part. We have to spend a lot of time indoors with the heating on so whilst we typically earn more, we have a lower quality of life I would argue.

What a brilliantly insightful and very accurate summary of Spain's 'bads'. I think you should put animal cruelty first as in the majority of European's eyes, the awful behaviours of animal abusers (weak, pathetic people - including those who pay to support it) shame the wonderful country of Spain so much. How the bullterror/ murder (it is not fighting at all - check out what harm they do to the bull beforehand) can still occur in a major EU nation amazes me - the attachment to 'tradition' that is harmful and cruel is not an excuse nor a reason. The same applies to the religious crap when the bulls head is set on fire, and the utterly disgusting cruelty shown to "hunting" dogs (yeah, right) like Podencos. Alas, it is mostly men. This links with sexism thing in a way. I'm glad Spain introduced new laws to make wife and partner abuse /beating socially unacceptable and illegal (in the developed parts of Spain!). I note too the younger generation see violent macho crap for what it is - pathetic, weak, embarrassing and cruel. It would be wonderful if the old fashioned siesta would be abandonned; it would breathe life into so many 'dead' towns during the day. One last thing that I might add to the list: if a Spanish tax payer, perhaps be a little cross at all the over- staffing and, well, over-presence of the various different police and border forces, plus all their flash equipment, judging by the way they all seem only to work and walk about leisurely in big groups, and all the cars/ boats/ motorbikes, vans etc evident outside any of their places, or car parks? It must cost a fortune, as will their public sector pensions when they retire at 50 😂. Great video, great screen presence, keep it up.

I have visited Spain many times over the decades and I have encountered most of the things you mention. I chalk them up to "when in Rome, do as the Romans do". I love the country and its people too much for these things to really bother me. But there is one thing I have always resented: Bullfighting. I can't understand how a cultural people who are so socially liberal find pleasure in watching a bull being killed. I know that fewer and fewer people are going to bullfights - the whole thing is dying out due to a lack of interest. But the fact that something so barbaric took place at all is questionable. After all, the Italians no longer hold gladiator fights either.
@clarencehammer35564 ай бұрын
I have always wanted to live in Spain at least for some time. My main reason is for Spanish language immersion. I know that there are things I would not like. I would not like that everything is closed on Sunday. I would not like kissing or being kissed by everyone I meet. I do not approve of bullfights. I am a person who always wants to be on time. Being late makes me very anxious and nervous. But I think that siesta time is a great idea. And I would love sobremesa.

A lot of those are actually good points - siesta, shorter working hours, summer heat. And it's not dangerous to go out in the heat during summer.
@holamydailyspanish9 ай бұрын
Some people die every summer because of the heat, if they get in the car before ventilating it and cooling it with aircon, or because they wandered under the sun without drinking, or got severe burns... on the hottest days you should be very very veeery careful if you want or have to go outside under the sun, at least in cities like Sevilla or Córdoba.

I love Spain, it is my favorite country in the world but for me it is the abuse of galgos(greyhounds) that I hate most. My Spanish teacher and her boyfriend have 2 rescue galgos and they told me about all of the horrible things that happen to them, approximately 50,000 are killed every year. Very sad 😢
@holamydailyspanish9 ай бұрын
Oh right that's another horrible thing happening T____T I really hope this doesn't happen in the future. This year they have made new laws for animal welfare but galgos are not included T_T The hunting culture here is awful :'((((
@tovarichy9 ай бұрын
I rescue abandoned and abused dogs in Spain and I think that 50,000 greyhounds a year is an exaggerated figure. In any case, the abuse of greyhounds occurs with gypsies who treat dogs very badly and with whom we have many violent problems because they are very violent people. Most of us Spaniards have dogs and we treat them very well and greyhounds are highly appreciated by everyone except gypsies and some hunters from Castilla la Mancha. I have lived in England for 6 years and foxes are not treated very well there. In every country there are bad people. The point is not to generalize.

I guess thats how it works in our world: geographically awesome palces with cool weather and staff should be populated by silly locals, like Spaniards.
