Best way to get off these over-torqued screws and bolts is to tap them using a hammer. Have done boilermaking with my old man for years and tapping them always gets them off. It creates vibration just enough to move the screw from its seized position and makes it easier to move.

For the levers -- Mark where they hit your hand w/ a marker. Wrap the cable end in a red shop rag and put into a vice. Then take an open ended wrench or pipe and gently bend the end to make it curved to a point about 1/2" past your mark line (very easy to do... it's just aluminum...). Take an angle grinder and cut off at your line, then grind the cut smooth. Finally, sand with course, then medium, then fine/superfine sand paper. Re-install and you're good to go. New levers in 10 minutes tops. Take your time, do it right, and they will look like they were built that way.

Handlebar bolts had no loctite but the bar ends come from the factory with loctite. Had to heat mine up with a heat gun trying not to burn the grip off in the process. They came off pretty easily with a little heat.

The problem you had with the bar-ends may possibly be due to the screws being JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), and not in fact Philips screws. On the surface the two screws look very similar, but the profiles are actually quite diferent and require different tools to apply proper torque. Or, the PDI mechanic was trained by the same guy that failed to tighten my rear axle nut after installing a new chain.

To be fair, bar ends have a tendency to fall off. They probably put something on it like loc-tite, most people do.

As far as the over-tightened bolts part, blame the factory guys for that, not the PDI guy. Groms are shipped with the bars on them, only the mirrors and battery get put in them at the shops.

The Grom is the most fun I've had on two wheels on road. I've rode R1s, 96ci Road Glides, knee dropping a Honda Shadow 500cc vs an S2000, seen 150mph, etc. i don't see the Grom as your only motorcycle as it doesn't do freeway, but it's a riot around town and for short commutes. My commute is about 7.5 miles each way. My VT1100 got about 30mpg (don't ask how fast). That's about $1.50 a day on my short commute. my MSX125, about $0.45/day in fuel. Morning commute is also bumper to bumper so...i kind of help myself to that street without stop lights or stop signs. Not the best only bike. but awesome awesome second bike.

Bar ends weren't over torqued, they were just loctite'd. I used a torch and a wet towel around the grips to keep them from melting, the bolts came out with no effort at all. Also those spirals were cut in at the factory, you didn't do that with an impact driver. I cant say for certain, but it looks like they were cut there to hold more loctite.

Get yourselves a couple of GOOD number 3 and 4 screwdrivers if they have a poined tip grind it down. a screw driver with a place to use a wrench on the shaft is very helpful also you can use more strength to hold the tip of your driver in while the other hand is doing the turning. lean your other handle against the wall for more leverage or have someone hold it. As for the allen bolts on the handlebars why would you put a bolt back on your bike that is nearly stripped.(this normally happens when you have really close to the correct size but not quite ie. the sae close match to the actual metric size, honda does come from japan) Sounds like Honda did a great job putting their bike together.

My Honda was over-torqued and I had to drill some out too. Sucks that it apparently isn't a one-off problem. Come on Honda. EDIT: It seems I've been duped about JIS. My old screwdriver was probably just worn or a cheap pressed steel tool. According to this article, JIS is effectively extinct. www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-tools/hozan-jis-screwdrivers-review/ -BTW, the screws on Honda are JIS, not Philips. They're really close and most of the time Philips works just fine, but the geometry is different enough that you can easily strip the head of a tight screw, especially with a power driver. I ended up ordering a set of JIS screwdrivers on Amazon in a fit of rage after having to drill out and replace yet another over-torqued screw.-

tips on how to buy anything such as a house or car or motorcycle or refrigerator: 1. get a loan from a bank. 2. walk up and say ive got a loan please hand me a bike 3. profit things to avoid: 1. walking in and going through their payment "channels" (creeks) 2. paying msrp 3. even considering that the msrp means anything, they know you understand your shit when you go in and won't pay more than X and the bank loves your ass because they get to own an expensive toy for even cheaper than free if you cant pay up

I don't have a Grom...yet. I would be very particular about the exhaust because that is one of the more expensive and necessary mods to have. I've done a lot of planning and research on exhaust and personally I would look at sound over looks. The best sounding exhaust I have found while youtube surfing is the Competition Werkes full without baffles. It's expensive but damn it sounds good. It also looks excellent. It frees up the under saddle space and definitely compliments the bike's lines.

+Ryan Jenks I don't particularly like low mount exhaust either but the Competition Werkes looks great. If you can't get passed that then the MNNTHBX underbody exhaust would be an option. I don't particularly like the look or the sound of it but it's minimal.

On the financing thing - stealerships don't want you to finance through major institutions - they don't get nearly the kick back they do through the predatory lending places that will finance anyone as long as they drag a co-signer in with them. If you wanted to finance it it would have been better to arrange for it outside of the dealership and agree to the bottom line price as though you were financing with them but bust out a check for the exact amount at the last minute - you'll piss them off but that's only because they're screwing you in multiple undisclosed ways. Check your loan agreement - there may be a pre-payment penalty written into it. Cool little bike by the way - I'm thinking about getting one just for fun and running around town...

Hey bro, about the exhaust thing, since you dont like the short down low exhausts, and you like your tail end to be clean without a "undertail exhaust" i would look at the """MNNTHBX""" exhaust, its a exhaust that goes completely under the bike, and it sounds great, but when it comes to looks, inless your looking for the exhaust you wont even know its there!!!! also get shorty levers, that will help with your knuckle problem... Hope that helps :D

I think your point about the exhaust is true of most modern bikes. Because of all the extra crap for noise and emisions they are always huge and ugly. Some sports bikes look like they have a fucking dustbin (trash can) stuck on either side!! Vile. Bin them, save about 200Ib in weight and look cooler! I think we have different decals in the UK. Cool post :) I bomb around a bit on scooters which use similarly sized tyres. Now I'm not sure how much of a scooter racing culture there is in the US, but it's getting quite big over here. In any case I've had a few different tyres on my 2 stroke Yamaha BWS 100, and I can say that without a doubt the best scooter rubber out there for circuit racing is from Savva, and to me, my personal opinion and I'm sure many will cry and disagree, for road use, is the Michelin Bopper. It can be a bit greasy when it and the road are both cold, but they warm up pretty fast and then the grip gets real nice. Not like Savva racing slicks nice, but for the road for my auto tranny scoot that does about 75mph'ish / 125kph in the suburbs where the posted speed limit is half that, the Michelin Boppers are great. They make my BWS much more flickable than the stock godawful Kenda Klaw all terrain balloon knobblies, and the carcass & sidewalls are nice and rigid so when you're done flicking it into a turn the bike stays where you put it. The grip also lets go progressively, and the grip in the front matches the back, so you can take sweeps really fast and even with the fairly basic scooter suspension the Michelins aren't going to give you any nasty surprises. You can also back it in like a maniac, they let go where you tell them to and hook up again without any drama. So yeah, my 2c so far tyres are concerned, check out Michelin's Bopper tyres.

Those overtightened bolts probably happened at the factory, not the dealer. I have found this problem on more than one new bike. They are built by robots, and the torque is set way too high. The stickers are cheap because Honda wants more profit. The Grom is actually made in China. I'm too big for a Grom, but if I had one, I would get rid of the Grom stickers ASAP, and replace them with "MSX125" or something like that. "Grom" just sounds goofy to me. Most financing these days sucks. I haven't financed anything since buying a new bike in 2002, that was a 5 year loan, I got a decent interest rate, but the bank required full coverage insurance, which costs 5 times what liability only costs. I paid it off in less than a year, and dropped the full coverage insurance. I still have it. I have bought several bikes since then, new and used, and paid cash.

Top ten things I hate about my motorcycle: 1. I have "no credit" and couldn't get a lone. My two cents: Your credit is not the bikes fault. (btw, my credit is shot, so don't feel too bad.) 2. My bolts are too tight. My two cents: I would rather have them tight then have them loose and potentially fall off. Allot of bolts are designed to be torqued once, and never used again. I'm not sure if this is the case here, but it would make sense. Still, a couple of two dollar bolts are hardly a complaint in my opinion. 3. My 125 CC bike is under powered, I have a hard time reaching freeway speeds. My two cents: Really dude? Really? The minimum CC required to be freeway legal is 250cc. This bike is more of a city commuter then a cross country bike. I reject this complaint all together. (Unless you are referring to the gear ratios, in which case, I stand by the idea that the bike is simply not designed for those speeds, even if it can reach them.) 4. My bike exhaust is ugly, and too quiet. My two cents: Exhaust too quiet? Look, it's a $3000 125cc city bike. It's not a Harley Davidson, and if it was, the prive would triple. As far as looks go, that is a matter of opinion, and as is the case with all Honda machines, it is highly customizable. 5. The Honda logo is a sticker! My two cents: I give you this one. That was cheep. I would paint something on if I were you. Stickers? Really!? C'mon Honda. You are embarrassing me. 6. The suspension is too soft. My two cents: This is a legitamate complaint. I suspect, as a Jap bike, the people in Japan are ... less fat then Americans. THis might be why the suspention is such. Still, I suspect this too is customizable. 7. The break and clutch levers are lame. My two cents: You are lame. Quit picking on my bike. D-: Joking aside, this is a $5 part. Go buy something to your taste. I have no problem with the levers. 8. The tires are too hard, and don't grip the road. This is not only lagetamate, but a very serious safety concern. Tires are NOT an area to cheep out on. I give you this one sir. 9. I don't like the location of the horn button. My two cents: *rolls eyes* 10. Transmission is "clunky". My two cents: I wonder if it is truly a poor design, or if perhaps you simply need to break it in more. I suspect the latter. Honda doesn't cheep out on engines or transmissions.

+1 The Honda Finance! totally same situation as you. I could leave the store with a bunch of them, cash. Perfect credit score, since Honda thinks it's groundhogs of 2008 ...16% interest rate !!! F them ..they could sell hundreds of thousands more. Crazy the department to bring cash into a company keeps so much out!

I've put 2,000 miles on the bike, I got mine a couple weeks before this vid, so I'll give my opinion on some of your points.1. Yes, every damn bolt on my Grom has been WAY over torqued.2. Honda finance wouldn't even finance me with a huge downpayment, then fucked me with a 17% interest rate WITH my dad's co-sign, and he has PERFECT credit... Fucking bs.3. The stock gearing is really bad... Too long of gears, and it really needs a 5th gear. you just can't cruise in 4th below 8k rpms at all. 4. Mine came from the dealer with a Yoshi RS9 full exhaust, so I have 0 experience with the stock pipe. But the stock pipe does look really ugly...5. I actually kinda like the stock stickers6. For Honda knowing that 90% of Grom riders are going to stunt the bike and use it as a dual sport, the stock suspension is extremely weak.7. The stock levers were ugly, but worked ok with my bigger hands. However, my $20 black shorty levers from ebay made stunting easier, and braking/clutch use is way easier, and feels right.8. Yep, nailed the stock "vee rubbers". Like, wtf are those???? I'm about to shred my stock tire so I can go get two Maxxis knobby tires put on.9. The stock horn/signal buttons are extremely awkward, and the horn placement's just really odd as well...10. I never noticed this at first, as my Grom was my first bike. But after buying my 2016 Z800, I realized just how clunky and shitty that stock transmission was... That's literally the worst part of the bike, other than the suspension.Only things I'd add to the list is:Stock shifters are extremely ugly and odd looking. The bike vibrates a LOT at idle in neutral. No oil filter = difficult oil changes. And lastly, but not Honda's fault... THE AFTERMARKET FOR THESE BIKES SUCK. The parts that people came out with are excellent, but the prices are just ridiculous... $400 for a steering damper, $400-500 for a good rear shock, $400 for a fork upgrade. Extremely overpriced engine mods... The list could go on, but bottom line, most of the aftermarket for this bike's just too insanely priced.

Dear people with little or no credit history, The US is still emerging from a sub-prime lending -based crash. Lenders are still more..."selective" about loaning money. Even if you currently have no intention to purchase something via credit, consider joining a credit union. If you are planning on making such a purchase, START by going to a credit union.

That's not a Phillips screw, that's a JIS screw. Similar, but not the same. Phillips is designed to cam out and will strip. JIS will not if you use a JIS screwdriver.

Haha good luck man, that's not an easy feat for overprotective parents..I speak from experience lol and I feel your pain. But at least when your 18 you can go get one on your own and I know that seems like a long ass time away but when your 18 you will be surprised how fast time seems to go by and you don't want to end up like me regretting things.

Honda Financial is shit. My interest rate on my Grom was obscene. Main reason I got rid of it. Waiting for updated 2016-17 Grom or Z125. Still wish it was a 150 or bigger. Needs 15hp.
