I learned about this when I visited his immense boho-chic mansion in Key West and realized that the small pool he and his girlfriend/wife dug up cost $500,000 (mostly because Key West is on a coral island that is impossible to dig up). I was, like, "How the hell did they get $500,000 to squander on a tiny puddle of a pool?" Through the girlfriend's uncle, that's how. She got a huge allowance and then a large inheritance when her uncle kicked the bucket. That's how Hemingway was able to live the jet-setting life he loved--he dug for gold.

There's a Korean webcomic inspired by the original play and it actually handled it pretty good, changing some really necessary things. At the end the 'shrew' doesn't 'correct' her ways to fit society's standards but rather the guy is the one who learns the faults of his ways, genuinely apologizes and changes himself for the better. Honestly one of the best adaptations of this play I've ever read or seen. It’s called The taming of the shrew if anyone wants to check it out.

There are two crucial differences between this and the original play, which I think need to be discussed here. The first is that Petruchio isn't just a jerk, he's outright abusive to Kate. He physically abuses her, refuses to give her food and clothes, and gaslights her about reality. Granted, she's often shown physically assaulting him too, but at best that just makes the relationship mutually abusive. By contrast, Patrick agreeing to take money to ask Kat out is a jerk move, definitely, but their relationship itself completely lacks the abusive element. He's also held responsible for that initial wrongdoing and makes amends for it, while Petruchio is rewarded for everything he does and never has to apologize for anything (despite being guilty of far more than his modern counterpart). The second difference is that in the original play Kate doesn't simply fall in love, or become nicer, she's expected to be entirely submissive and obedient to her husband. Even if you read the final speech as tongue-in-cheek, Petruchio demanding blind (and indeed, outright irrational) obedience from her is an element of their relationship long before that. Now obviously, you couldn't play that plot exactly the same way in a modern rom-com, but I think the modern equivalent would have been Kat turning away from or at least softening her assertive feminism, which she never does. None of her beliefs or interests are treated as wrong, just sometimes her attitude. Even then, that attitude is treated more as an understandable result of how she herself has been treated, as we find out when we learn more of her backstory. 10 Things isn't just a 1-for-1 modern equivalent of Taming of the Shrew, those two changes make huge differences to the central relationship and the story's stance on gender roles. Maybe 10 Things isn't perfect, but I think they did a lot to create a modern version that's faithful to the original's basic plot while also improving the more sexist and troubling aspects.
@prokkle4 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of downright cruelty in Taming of the Shrew. Very difficult to watch. 10 Things is a delight, because the characters move towards each other, it's not just one of them making all the accommodation to the other..

Kat's story is definitely one of her and Patrick finding balance in themselves through their growing relationship (and relationship with others), challenging the rough aspects of themselves and not sacrificing any of the good. The english teacher is essential with balancing things out. the film focuses on white upper middle class suburbia, while reminding us that there is still a lot more out there. 10:21 Much Ado About Nothing ABSOLUTELY does not deserve to be given as a negative example here. Nothing about Beatrice is "softened" that isn't equally softened in Benedick (and basically just boils down to them admitting they actually care about each other). They keep bantering and giving as good as they get with each other even after they get together, it's just in good fun now instead of genuinely hurtful. And Beatrice keeps being as strong and witty and determined as ever. Heck, she makes a speech about how she wants to eat Claudio's heart for how he hurt her cousin *after* getting together with Benedick! Not exactly tame and docile, is she?
@sophiamikell74904 жыл бұрын
Yep. They both were an awesome couple that loved each other.
@katebuckman69434 жыл бұрын
Yeah, until the very end when Benedick says 'Peace, I'll stop your mouth', kisses her, and then Beatrice has no lines for the rest of the play while Benedick does. It's a comparable ending to Measure for Measure, where a woman's silence is interpreted as mute acceptance of a statement that she'll marry someone. Also, I think the line you're referring to where she wants to eat Claudio's heart is 'O God, that I were a man! I would eat his heart in the marketplace.' She's entirely aware of gender roles when she says that, and knows it's an empty wish. Love the play, but it's not as straightforward as we want it to be.

As a language coach for a production of Shrew, I translated the text to modern English. In order to do that I had to study a lot of essays on the play. When you do that, you find out that Shakespeare wrote on MANY levels and lines often had more than one meaning--sometimes as many as FOUR meanings in a single word! And yes, the ending speech is meant to be ironic, as Kate and Petruchio are actually equals who have a happy marriage as opposed to the other women who married for the wrong reasons.

The word use in the original French version of the Little Prince conveys a different meaning than the word "tame" in the English version. St-Exupéry uses the word "apprivoiser" which is different from "dompter". "Dompter" normally translates "to tame", in the sense of making a wild animal docile or unthreatening or to conquer someone or something. "Apprivoiser" means to get to know someone or something or to become familiar with someone or something, which is more suited in this situation.

I never thought that kat was the one being tamed, like this interpretation I always saw it as meeting her equal, she fell in love with someone that was also ostracized, and who loved her personality regardless of what everyone else said about her. In that sense, Patrick was kind of tamed as he recognised how society's impression of Kat was wrong and misogynistic. Also because of the stark contrast of how Petruchio treated Katerina, because Petruchio was repeatedly cruel to her so that when he was finally nice to her she would become submissive and dote on him, while Patrick (even though at first his actions weren't genuine) tried to learn about her interests and most of the time was pretty kind to her

It ain't that simple. For example, many male inventors and scientists such as Nikola Tesla, Issac Newton, had women lining up for them but chose to remain single putting their work as priority. Many died in their 80s and over. Nikola Tesla had a beautiful high class lady sending him letters obsessively yet he didn't bite on. He died aged 86. His research made him more happy than any woman could. Same for Isaac Newton. There are those men that indeed put their passion as higher priority over any sort of romance. A other thing is that there are indeed women that want that family lifestyle and to have kids. Basically group mentality has a limited range. After a point you'll find individuals among all groups that don't fit the mould. That's reality.

In 'The Proposal', I'd argue she softens up not just because of a man's love, but more by finding a loving and caring family, a feeling of home she hasn't had in a long time. She felt isolated and hid in her work, now the hiding is over. I think that's why it's such a good movie.

The movie was written by two female screenwriters who also wrote Legally Blonde, Ella Enchanted and She's the man, some of the few most iconic feminist movies of the 1900-2000's. The conclusion, just like Shakespeare's, is probably ironic because in both times, it was bad to scream out loud you're feminist, even 5 years ago most of people would still label feminists like 'hystericals' and all. Even if they wanted a more explicit ending, the producers/pub house wouldn't have accepted it, but the spirit of the stories truly show a feminist way of thinking. I love the fact that my favourite 90s comedies are based on important pieces of literature, written ages ago. In that way you understand the core of the work with the standards of your own era, while appreciating the original.

Actually I really love that ending and I see nothing problematic in it at all. Pat made a mistake by taking the money. Kat was rightfully angry when she found out. Pat also started to really like Kat once he got to know her and actually fell in love with her. Just because he did something stupid in the beginning doesn't mean she has to "hate" him. He apologized with a thoughtful gift and she forgave hime because she also accepted that people make mistakes but are not inherently "bad" for that. It actually makes for a very grown up ending and that's what I like about it. They both have grown, accept each others flaws and also are good for each other, softening down a bit. And yes I do thing she's grown and not "giving anything up". Part of growing up is learning how and when to give your opinion, when to soften down and when to take other's feelings into account. It does not mean that you're broken, it means that you're humble and see other people's view as well also seeing when you might have been a bit extreme and tone it down a bit. Julia played that very well.

Agreed. I liked the ending, it showed the maturity between them and softening for each other. Very cute

i hope you make a video on bianca as well, specifically on the evolution of her character through the various adaptations of the source material. cause in the 10 things film they started to show that she has a lot more substance than people perceive her to have (they hint at this when it's shown how great she is at french, and also show it in the later half of the movie at her outburst at kat when kat tells her about her past with joey - which revealed so much of bianca's thought process, and when she punches joey.) and in the show they take it even further by showing how bianca's popularity is calculated, not handed out, and they even humanize joey's character as well.

Why has falling in love become conflated with "giving up your power" in current feminist doctrine? It's so short-sighted. Kat's transformation is the whole point of the movie! It is a learning experience that shows her that there's still beauty, love and kindness in the world, and that she- despite her loner projections- wants love and is deserving of it. See, despite what the feminists think, the movie is not showing her early, cynical views as worthwhile, feminist values that are conducive to wellbeing. Rather, it is showing that they were a painful symptom of her relationship with her father and sister, which made her view the world with a cold, cynical eye as she was the 'protector' of her younger, more naive sister. It is setting up the dichotomy between naivety and cynicism, softness and anger. But her transformation shows that she can oscillate between these two positions, which makes her happy in the way of love, but also retains her independence and wit etc. Thus, the movie intends to show us that being alone does not always mean being happy/powerful!

This concept of finding someone and falling in love always brings me back to quotes from the little prince especially the one about the Fox mentioned. :)

Dive into the taming of her sister Bianca, she was almost lured in a negative way to "the dark side" but in the end showed her strength. Perhaps she was a shrew in her own way. Yes she fit social standards of beauty and how to behave, but she also didn't succumb to them out of pressure. It was just who she was already.

Plus the scene of her opening a can of whoop ass on Joey for hurting her and her loved ones while wearing a cute tutu shows that you can be feminine and strong.

Katerina and Petruchio's dialogue is so amazing in the play, they seem like greater equals and better partners than almost any in classic Lit

Kat was my hero growing up. She didn't play nice to make people around her feel more comfortable.

Why are people mad at who Kat is ;/ there’s a million male characters who are so much more grating and straight up rude but they’re all just accepted.

I hate that ppl expect feminist characters to be 1000% perfect saint/genius,flawless or sassy. Some char can be a feminist and still have flaws in other points of her or his worldview. Its actually nice to have another minority challenge to expand their worldviewin feminism, maybe becoming more inclusive to trans/poc/etc. Problem isss is that mostly men, specially cishet white conservative men, tend to take those challenges as a 'haha women get humbled' moment or 'see? Feminism is shit, yall arejust exageratting' or dismissing any other feminist values the character has, laughing as minorities fight each other, further gaslighting us to think were dramatic/its just a joke/not that deep/etc.smth smh like that.

I love kat’s character sm. she is so badass. I hate that they don’t let her have flaws. She’s human bro a character isn’t interesting without flaws. She speaks her mind and doesn’t care what others think, she is hated for it, but she doesn’t care. I love her character. It calms me to feel I resonate with her

Hi just to tell you that the first text of Saint exupéry the author of the little prince is in french and the verb used in the original text isn't actually the litteral translation tamed "dresser" and is instead "apprivoiser" and the sense of the verb is way more link to gaining the trust of the wild animal than obtaining "dominance" over it.

I still love Kat, I was a preteen when the movie came out and now I'm in my 30s, I still love her.

Top 3 favorite movies for me, 10 Things stood out to me as a teen and now for the sophisticated language that the teens used in dialogue compared to other films around that time. I thought The Take would touch on Kat’s personal source for her anger which ironically had to do in part with her “ex” Joey and possible mother wounds.
