Duuude learning by ear is such an essential skill to have. As a beginner I thought it was a waste of time, but 6 years later I feel comfortable saying my ear is decent. It feels like a legit superpower to hear a song and immediately know how to play it

5:11 finally another video where someone talks about this, I remember seeing a video a while back in which someone else played it correctly and in the description they talked about how people play the song wrong all the time. It was the first time I had actually heard someone cover that riff and have it sound right. I also remember seeing a comment on the video that called it the Corgan chord since it also appears in another SP song, Mouths Of Babes. Playing by ear and looking at hand placement in videos is something I've had to do to adapt in learning songs, Smashing Pumpkins songs in particular funnily enough, I even learned the solo for Here Is No Why by slowing down videos of people playing it because the tabs for it were not formatted well.

I never thought that "I remembered my KZbin password" video has was Mgła inspired song you had done. That was really cool. Sometimes it's important to take something you musically like, and apply it as your own with new melodies and riffs just as long as it not an actual carbon copy of the original. I may not play guitar much (especially with not a lot of practice) , but whenever I do at times, I tend to get self-conscious on wanting not to sound like a rip off of some said band or musician. So it's hard to try to sound like that music, but wanting to make it new and different compared to the other.

bro such a shame that not enough people know this channel. So many things that beginners and intermediates alike should go back to. Thank you for this awesome video, you have saved my five years of ineffective learning.

When you start learning by ear you start to notice that actually most tabs you'll find online aren't accurate, so it's definitely one of the most important things you can learn to do. Something else that happened to me is that by trying to figure out a song through trial and error I find some way to play a riff differently that, in my opinion, sounds better so whenever I play that song I'll play that riff that way because it sounds good to me. Same thing applies to covers, 100% accurate covers are cool, but I tend to enjoy more covers that deviate from the original song just a little to add some spice. Anyways great video bro.

That's a good point. I should've mentioned that because I do the same thing sometimes. Thanks for watching

Dude yes. Agree with all the points 100%. Learning by ear has helped me dissect so many songs that I couldn't find tabs for or were slightly off, esp compared to how the original guitarist plays it. One thing I personally found really rewarding is learning a song, either by ear or tabs/notation, that is maybe slightly higher than my skill level at that moment. It may seem intimidating and frustrating at first, but I always felt like I improve so much and more confident in my playing. For example, I was learning Biffy Clyro and Arcane Roots songs, and both Simon Neil and Andrew Groves have particular ways of writing melodies and chord shapes. Was really weird to wrap my head around their guitar parts, but I tackled the easier riffs like the choruses and worked my way up. Eventually, I realized the songs showed me how to voice chords in a different way that make riffs and chords sound massive.

To add on tone chasing, do it if it inspires you to play better than you ever did. People won't notice/care if you have a Tube Amp or a Modeler, but people will notice if you're uninspired in your playing.

What a great guitar tone. Perfectionism is valuable but it can also be productivity killer. I have years of material I can never release because it’s never been ‘good enough’. I’m still struggling too.
