We just added a lawn mowing service last year. Husband turned 88 with several heart problems, and due to several surgeries, I cannot do it either. For us, it is money well spent. We did it ourselves for years and years.

It is so refreshing to hear you say that you and Mike don't feel the need to spend money on each other. I have friends and daughters in law that think it's just criminal that my husband and I don't buy gifts or cards for each other's birthdays, Valentine's Day, what have you. It's so sweet to hear you say you have no need for a gift, because having each other is enough. ❤

Great video Jane, I am sure most of us have fallen into these traps before today. I have been guilty of over stocking my pantry or cleaning cupboard. I have also bought extra clothing from the charity shop even though I have got 3 like that at home. This was pointed out to me when I down sized my home a few years ago. Because I had lots of storage I didn’t realise I had 2 years supply of toilet rolls or washing powder. I now try to be very mindful of what I have and what I need.

I agree on the snack food thing. I am from Denmark, have been living in the US for 30-plus years. One of the big surprises to me when I emigrated was the constant snacking that the Americans did, in between the meals: crackers, cheese, chips, yoghurts, muffins, cookies, donuts, granola bars, gorp, cheese sticks, candy bars, fast food, the list goes on, and last but not least SODA. I was used to 3 meals a day, never thought of anything else, unless it was an apple in the afternoon or we might bake a cake to have slice of with afternoon tea. In the late summer we’d raid the fruit trees. Soda was something we had at a birthday party, never on a daily basis. Never got in the habit of the constant snacking of processed convenience foods. It’s expensive and unhealthy

I like your #2, Jane. I was the same way when I retired! No more expensive salon visits, jewelry and makeup and , God as my witness, no more PANTY HOSE ever! (I actually cut up the panty hose I had and used them as strips to tie up my tomato plants on their stakes!)

Your list was spot on - the only thing I would add is renting a storage unit. My son had one for years and I nagged and nagged him to give it up. He finally did a couple of months ago and I don't think he misses it or the things he got rid of. He was paying to keep things he didn't need or even knew he had !!!

Great list. I don't colour my hair either - I consider my hair an interesting shade of pepper and salt and perfectly happy with it. Takeaway food we have maybe three or four times a year at the very most, supporting small local family-run businesses. One on my list - I refuse to buy any sort of commercial air-freshener. Instead i like to open a window and scent the house with fresh air, plus home grown lavender and herbs.

I’m very guilty of snacking. It’s a terrible habit and I’m going to break it! Especially after watching this vlog lol You are so right, it’s a frivolous waste of money and it definitely isn’t doing my waistline any good! Prices are going up and packages are getting smaller so it’s definitely time to quit and save the cash. Thanks for the pep talk. Xx

Bottled water is one thing I HATE paying for! What a waste of money and resources! Fair enough if your water source is dodgy but we have perfectly clean tap water here in Australia. Interesting list. We don’t spend a lot on each other, but we do make things and have an occasional small treat , which is nice to receive and give. I didn’t think we were ‘frugal’ but we equally are retired and are careful with our finances. Happily married for 44 years…..tiny gifts to each other are sometimes lovely.

You are really a practical person and you are lucky that Mike is on board too. I cannot believe how different our cultures are. I just love the simplicity of your life. I think in general, people in the UK are more frugal than people in the US. I have a coworker who does not cook any meals at all. Her husband might cook a meal once a week on his day off but for the most part, they eat all their meals out. They have an 18 month old and the baby lives off of fast food like French fries and burgers. In fact, about a third of my coworkers do not cook at all; they buy food out. I myself am guilty of getting take away at least once a week. I need to simplify my life because at times I feel like a hamster running of a wheel and getting nowhere. I am reading a blog by a woman named Toni called simplefrugallife; it was mentioned to in Frugal Jo's blog. She gives great tips about simplifying your life.

Thank you Jane. My husband of 42 years and I don't buy gifts for our Wedding Anniversary or Valentine's Day either. Both are in February...as is my birthday! Too much. I also just put some funds towards something I might need or like for my birthday as does my husband for his birthday later in the year. If I buy something I like, money from the shared budget isn't wasted on stuff that I don't. But everyone is different of course.

Thank You for another one of your Fabulous Shows ma'am 🙂. Everything you've said about what you refuse to buy i completely agree with you. Never the less 😞 I must admit my wife and I dinner out and carry out WAY TOO MUCH and after watching your show I'm feeling terrible 😔 guilt . Your so right, it's way to expensive and a waste of money. After your show my wife and I decided that we will no longer spend our money on carry in or out meals . Then when you spoke about not buying snacks. I wanted to go hide I felt so bad 😞. We are the worst at eating snacks. Not anymore ! Your soooo right about settling with a slice of bread, piece of cheese or fruit. Neither one of us at our age should have been eating all that carry-out carry-in meals like we have. We definitely shouldn't have been eating all those snacks. Your Sundays episode was definitely a wakeup call for us ma'am. I think the only things we do right is like your husband. I do all the mowing, garden prep and any home or out side repairs and maintenance. My wife works with me when I need her help at times. We too are retired and in our 60's . We have nothing pressing to go to. My clothes primarily consist of bib overalls and a t-shirt with work boots during the summer. Winter the same except I'll add a long sleeve shirt and a work coat and hat. In closing, THANK YOU AGAIN ! ! For another one of your wonderful episode's. It was truly a wakeup call for my wife and I ...

Everything identical with us except I'm a bit of a sucker for snacks! Wish I wasn't, but old habits for hard. Again, it's just a tube of Pringles once week, maybe digestive biscuits the next, and a few grapes the net, never mega bucks, but resistance is futile! But then, we don't buy any alcohol so I use that as an excuse!😆

My fav snack is sliced peppers or cucumbers dipped in Salsa or Kimchi. My furniture and dishes are handed down from fam for a few hundred years now and are in functional everyday use. Yes they have been reupholstered many times over the years. I recently had three pieces redone in muslin last summer and have new slipcovers on them. We go to the local pancake place every few months for a treat. Yes I do make them at home but we enjoy the outing. No cable or subscriptions, periodicals , theaters for us. We are happy at home. We don’t buy gifts for each other, we have just celebrated our golden wedding and I found it strange to get gifts and cards. Years ago I bought myself, husbands money, a new overlocker just before Christmas, so if anybody asked I would say I got that for Christmas, then hubby said he had excess car allowance from work, so I got a brand new car at Christmas. We also had to dress for work and are now lucky enough to be able to go on cruises, but not Cunard but MSC as we do not have to dress up. No employer to obey. Enjoy your retirement Jane though as you get older you might need garden service etc, we are 73 and 82.

Much the same list here. The closest we get to a restaurant is when my husband wins a gift certificate, and he's done it three times this year already. But I can't eat most of what they make, luckily it is just around the corner from our home, so I will make the meat & vegetables for a meal, and he pops over and buys chips (french fries in N. America) with that certificate. We don't go to movies, travel more than 10 km from home, or even buy birthday or Christmas gifts for friends or family. Instead, when there is a real need, they get it in a lump sum. And the latest happiness is that I traded some of our eggs for home made soap from my niece. I can use it for hand washing, and even for doing dishes or laundry...I will never buy soap again.

Yes! Just my internet alone is twice that. And it's the lowest speed, cheapest you can get with a private local company. I don't have TV but my cell phone is outrageous even for the lowest amount of data and doing a bit of shopping around for the cheapest price. So many people see the US as this privileged rich country but what they don't see is that we are charged two or three or more times for everything. Our higher incomes comparatively are just nickel and dimed away even if we are careful and thrifty.

I spend money on a few snacks but I limit how much I eat. I live alone and am not in real good health so I am not able to work and take care of my yard anymore. I pay a gentleman friend and he doesn’t charge alot to keep my yard up for me. I cook for myself. Since it’s just myself I cook light meals. Every great once in awhile I would go to McDonald’s and eat chicken nuggets and fries. But, for now I’m not able to eat much at all because I have a twisted hernia in my stomach so I eat light food and eat small portions until I can go in to have surgery. In the US we have Door Dash and other food pick-up services. We tried it once during COVID. Never again - it was very late and cold when we got it. Plus, my son is a chef, and he told me that when you add a tip on Door Dash, none of it goes to the restaurant staff, even though the driver is already compensated through Door Dash. In the US, wait staff rely on tips as part of their income, as they are exempted from the minimum wage laws, and most restaurants well below that, let alone a decent living wage. If we want it, we go get it ourselves, and we don't do that very often.

Excellent list. Once in awhile I do need to spend money for a haircut. I would be thrilled to not have to. I have a service to cut my lawn for me. When I did it myself it caused medical issues. Another one I wish I didn't have to. And eating out, I do rarely. Usually as a treat catching up with relatives or friends.

I used to trade lawn cutting for my babysitting services, just an idea. For my hair, I bought The Perfect Bob template. It makes a very blunt bob. I have a friend who cuts it using template. I did buy nice haircutting scissors as that helps avoid split ends. If you can wear your hair longer you can diy. A haircut is $40 + tip where I live. Beauty school is $30+ tip. Crazy high prices.

@@happycook6737 Thanks for replying. I used to cut my own hair, but can't do it anymore. I usually look for a bargain. The last time it was a friend of a friend (a professional) it only cast me $20. As far as the lawn service goes I've found a very reasonable one.

Wonderful list. I don't go to restaurants or order fast food. Too expensive! I stopped my magazine subscriptions and the daily newspaper. I pick up magazines at yard sales cheap or the library sale and when I'm done I donate them back to the library. I also never pay shipping. If it's not free I won't buy it. My makeup routine the past 12 years has been moisturizer and sunscreen and I like the grey in my hair!!

I’m mid 50s and don’t color my hair or wear makeup. Thankfully I have an office job where I can dress casually - they don’t care as long as you’re neat and clean. Only have to dress up once in a great while due to visitors. I do grocery delivery sometimes due to bad knees, as a walk through the grocery store might hurt too much. Rarely buy gifts. No monthly subscriptions either.

I've given up newspapers. I've cut out all magazines too though I'm weak where my monthly quilting one is concerned. Now I'll only buy it if I can promise myself it's got at least two projects I'll do and can't source the patterns for free elsewhere.

@@FrugalQueeninFrance.. I'm going to have to check my library see if I can access my mag. Not heard of Libby till you mentioned it. That would be good and save me a bit. Those magazines aren't cheap. Thanks for the tip.

I was just going to comment on the fact that I was so happy to hear that you guys don't buy gifts for each other either. When I tell people this, they look at me with faces that say they feel sorry for me. In fact, it's just the opposite. It is so freeing to know that we don't need anything other than each other. Why spend money on things that we don't want or need just because it's a holiday, birthday, etc.

We don't have municipal drinking/tap water, only borehole, so instead of buying drinking water in 6 ltr bottles I carefully harvest rainwater. It saves a lot of wasted plastic and, apart from the Brits water filter costs, is free. Greetings from S. Portugal.

I refuse to spend money on things unless I really love them. My husband and I went a decade sleeping with our mattress on the floor because I couldn’t find a bed frame that I loved and would be happy to have for the rest of my life. Too often people treat so many household items as consumables. I buy timeless, quality things to last a lifetime.

I pretty much follow this list too. Not so much out of need, but more value what I spend on and these don't provide value to me. If you were to end up with quite a large amount of savings due to frugal living, and not overspending what would you use it for that still aligned with your values?

Was so surprised how inexpensive French cable is. Here in the US it’s cheaper to just have internet and pick and choose your subscription than cable package for TV. Cable pkg in US can be upwards of 200.00

I have now reached retirement and I want to relax and enjoy my retirement, we eat out occasionally as we enjoy it, I pay for some one to cut our hedges as I am not physically able to , I have worked and saved all my adult life and want to enjoy what I have I don’t plan to be the richest person in the graveyard.

Just about "ditto." I do buy some new products when I need something. It has to be a need because, otherwise, I'm in another no-spend year. I don't need very much at all. I already have what I need, for the most part.

Take aways are too expensive and unhealthy. Make your own from home, they also taste better. TV channel subscriptions are silly why pay when there are free shows already on your television. And how has time these days to sit and watch endless shows.
