ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist, and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

What I stopped doing or buying: 1. hairspray 2. make-up 3. perfume 4. air travel 5. new clothes (I sew, knit and upcycle or buy second hand) 6. jewellery 7. magazines 8. new books (I buy them second hand or borrow them from the library) 9. gift wrapping paper and single use ribbons (I've sewn gift bags and use fabric ribbons and reuse both) 10. fabric softener, dryer sheets, laundry perfume etc. (laundry detergent is enough!)

I've accepted my age instead of trying to ignore it. I'm in my 70s and retired and up until a few years ago I was doing all my yardwork and gardening "to save money". I was having some health problems at the time and became very heat intolerent. I gave myself permission to hire help with some of the heavier tasks and only do what I can now without wearing myself out. Things are so much more enjoyable now. 😊

I can relate. I am 68 and have problematic arthritis in my neck, because of an old injury. It is worse in the winter. I have become vegan and have given up gluten, which really helps. People really think that is crazy, but it really really helps. However, I still was expecting too much of myself. Now I realize that I am going to have to do less deep cleaning in the winter time, and have come up with a schedule to keep my home very neat and clean with a bit of daily work. My husband always helps. I can no longer babysit grandchildren on a regular basis. It is just too hard for me. I switch to hand sewing in a recliner, with my head supported, rather than sitting at a sewing machine. I have stopped doing some things, such as feeding the birds outside, and adopting more pets. I have enough pets already. I shop less and buy less. I sit down and relax when I have to. I only have 1 house plant, and I only plant one pot outside in the front, and one in the back, in the spring. Getting rid of lots of things has definitely made my life easier. It is much easier to care for my home, which is my goal. It is okay to sit down, read, watch a movie, snuggle with the dog , hand sew, or play my guitar. Years of caring for children, going to school, going to work, studying, and keeping house, make it hard to accept that I can do what I want now, and it is okay!! It is also okay to just donate things!!! It is also okay to keep what I want, such as several sewing machines, and several guitars, as long as I have space for them and can keep them neat. In short, I am trying to accept who I am, and enjoy life. I am also trying to listen to my kids and grandkids, I mean really listen, and show and express my love for them openly. I am trying to change some of the negative narrative in my head, which comes from a bad childhood, and realize that, "the prison door is open and I can walk out." So you see, I am busy and have a lot of work to do!!! These videos really help and inspire me!! Also my hair is white as snow and I have earned it.

I love my quality coffee but make it at home. And I drink a couple of cups in the a.m. and switch to other beverages for the rest of the time. I had guests recently for the weekend and they kept requesting I make another pot of coffee. After they left I found half-finished cups of coffee all over the place! It was a minor annoyance and they only visit once a year. But it seemed odd to me. If I pour a cup of good coffee, I finish it and put the empty in the sink with soapy water.

Is it though? I mean, I totally get it: The news can stress one out easily these days. And it's of course a valuable goal to be more relaxed and balanced... however I think it's problematic for a society if more and more people just switch themselves off from the world. I have no solution for that - it just worries me if this seems to be the only attainable way to take for so many of us.@@AtoZenLife And furthermore: Not listening to the news is quite a privilege as well, because it means that you are safe and not in the midst of the many crises there are.

I guess I don't understand how piles of cheap garbage would lead to spikes of pleasure. And knowing what we are doing to the environment by living this way should make us feel guilty, not content! I'm a minimalist, but my house is done in greens, blues, pinks and white. It's a very happy house, with space to move in and think in. Love your channel. And the rude comments are just beyond bizarre, not to mention shallow. Good for you for ignoring them. What's funny is they assume their opinions should somehow matter to you.

But I wish I knew how to save money efficiently.. I am in my mid 50th, saved up around 450k but I could have done much better if I knew all the tricks.. Not caring what others think is something I have no issue with, and I instilled it in my children from a young age. Research shows that the dopamine hit is gone really quickly after purchase of most impulse purchases. So the recommendation is to pick up the item, really enjoy it for a moment, get the hit, then have a chat with yourself about how that's the most enjoyment you're going to get from it, how it's just going to clutter your house, and how you'd rather save the money and not dust around the decor item (or you dont really need another shirt etc etc). Then put it back, and know you got all the joy from interacting with it in the store without having to take it home.

My old dermatologist told me it’s not what you do that keeps you young. It’s what you don’t. He said, “Don’t drink alcohol, don’t smoke, don’t tan, and don’t drink brown liquids like coffee, tea, cola.” Apparently brown liquids all contain tannic acid that ages your cells. Want to have young cells, just don’t. Perfect for a minimalist.

I stopped chasing my grey roots 14 months ago. I agree that I'd never have colored my hair if I knew how difficult the grow- out would be. There are several FB groups of women accepting gray hair that have helped.. It is very freeing to not be constantly worrying about my grays.

I am naturally a more minimalistic person, but I have struggled with the notion that I am a boring, uninteresting person if I don't own the stuff (books, movies, decor, etc) to showcase personality. So I have invested too much time and money in thrifting things, that I genuinely do like but do not need or use (usually), just to feel good about myself and impress the guests (that almost never come to house) 😅 so a couple of your points really hit home for me today.

You always have great tips! Since I'm a " slow to start" child😂 I take my time to think about it. Since I've seen your videos, I've decided to work my way into this whole thing 🤪very slowly, but only after I get the big picture of what I want my life to look like. I'll keep watching. Thank you so much.

I gave up coffee for a month. While I was at work at 8, I wasn't awake until 10 and was less productive. Went back to drinking coffee and was awake and ready to work again. I used to have one cup a day until I had twins... 8 years ago. Now I have two morning cups, but if I have more my energy levels go down.

The fork Comb was hilarious!!! About your gray hair, don't worry that much about it. People will always have their opinions but your wallet health is more important. 😊 I am 51 years old and have my is 35% gray. All I do is fix my eyebrows, because I am starting to have some gray as well. I don't care if you look clean and tidy, no worries. For me every hair is like an experience, why should I cover it? Stay healthy physically and mentally that is the most important thing. ❤

Love your ideas here. I stopped waiting to pay bills! As soon as it’s received, I pay it. Same with credit card usage (which for me is sporadic at most); I always pay off the balance either the same day or the day after I make a purchase! It’s just so helpful to have those things out of the way and off my mind immediately.

I'm the same age as you and after dyeing my hair in all sorts of colour, I decided to grow out my natural hair. Curls and greys, it's all there. It's been a journey, but I'm so happy I did it. Not only does it save you money and protect you from harmful chemicals, it's also so enormously liberating. It allows you to take control and show other women and girls that ageing is ok and a thing to be proud of. There are a lot of IG and FB sites for support, highly recommend them. The more inspiration you seek, the more normal it will become - just as when we seek minimalist inspiration to lead a minimalist lifestyle ourselves. Thanks a lot for creating this content, lots of love from Norway.

Deje de teñir mi pelo en 2018 y fue lo mejor que pude hacer. Me crece muy rápido y me estresaba mucho con las raices. Ahora lo tengo largo y sano y me enamore de mi color natural. Tengo algunas canas y me encanta. Recién estoy empezando con esto del minimalismo, es un gran desafio porque me gusta coser y hacer crochet y tengo muchos recortes de tela e hilados. Me gusta mucho tu canal ❤

I was about to declutter today but I tuned in to KZbin before I began and learned why I do this - productive procrastination. Thank you for helping me identify what's going on so I can stop it. Keep up the good work.

I'm a huge crafter, so now I've started doing "intentional crafting." I used to make dolls based off of characters from TV shows (I have a bin full), but now I have a smaller space. Lockdown made me realize that I own a lot of yarn and embroidery floss, which is weird since I don't embroider. I ended up finding a way of conserving crafting supplies (I couldn't buy stuffing for a while) so I started making very tiny animals that require little space. If I do knit or crochet something now, I make sure I have a purpose for it. All of my scraps end up with a purpose too, and I'm enjoying it!

When you said "nip it in the bud" instantly I had a clip of Barney Fife flash on screen in my brain! 😂 I think some of the main motivations for rejecting the minimalist aesthetic have nothing to do with minimalism as a practice. We've been deluged with sterile, cold, impersonal white rooms which are frequently portrayed in ways that can seem very privileged, exorbitantly expensive, elitist and sometimes even ableist. Conspicuous non-consumption has obscured the message of lifestyle minimalism. And I saw what you did with the fork. 😆

I am 65. I let my hair go completely grey about five years ago (for the second time).... NOT a day goes by that I don't get complimented on the color or style of my hair. HA HA. I also have been dressing in all black since the seventies.... all of a sudden, people think that I can dress so well. Truth is that I don't have any sense of fashion and could not be bothered. Somehow I accidentally hit upon a winning formula. Love your channel. Love your sense of home and life. What an interesting life you lead.

Why would somebody even think of putting you down for how you look (you look chic btw)!! So glad I can go 10 hours of (window) shopping without spending one penny. Writing lists, even for essentials, has worked out so well for me. My lists are handwritten, stuck on the refrigerator door, categorized by the store I should get things from (TP and milk from Costco, Long grain rice from Walmart, Jam from Trader Joe’s etc). Works so well for me.

In September I went on a negativity detox. I've stopped looking up people who are no longer in my life or content creators who made me feel bad about myself. It's something I often did when I was bored but no more! I don't need to see what those people are up to! I love having the headspace back.

I guess I'm a minimalist too - most of the things I stopped as well or never started 🤔 It's crazy to see how one person can change willingly - you're someone to look up to. I stopped binge eating and binge drinking, as well as using make up regularly. And I feel so free and natural it's amazing :)

I stopped using any make up and just use soap to clean and wash my face. For years now, yet I'm still amazed at how simple and nice it is. No need to keep buying, spending, thinking, being tempted to try new products. My skin is balanced, smooth and just natural. If only women would know what a favor they could do to themselves.

I had to get back to dopamine vs. serotonin decor. This realization from you resonated with me as I received another picture of yet another piece of furniture my sibling bought and will reupholster. No judgement, their home is lovely, but I can't take endless fabric, wallpaper, clutter and non-stop shopping and decorating. btw, isn't paper wallpaper behind a toilet unsanitary? What do you think community? 🙄 hope this finds everyone well😍 now that I really think about it, my sibling is decorating to keep from dealing with a life of missed opportunities.
