I have only bought Amazon and Temu kits. Even if I was a millionaire I wouldn't pay the prices of the diamond painting companies, but I will always cheer on those who feel differently. I have found the best deal for the size is off of AliExpress. They have a great selection to choose from. Now to show the rate of inflation... I purchased a 70x50cm painting for $16.50 back in 2020. But I just looked it up again and now that same size is $35.62. 😳🤨 I guess they had better deals during the pandemic to keep business up and have now figured out the rest of the world will keep paying to get their crafting fixes.😆

Wow! You apparently put a lot of time & effort in making your list. It helped me stop & think about each point. We can all get caught up in the things we want, but if we hit pause, sometimes it will stop impulsive spending. When watching various videos & reading comments about diamond painting, it’s staggering the amount of money people have invested in the craft. Diamond painting can be addictive for those of us that love it. Then I’m reminded that gambling is also addictive. An addiction means balance has been lost. I don’t mean to be a downer, but keeping balance with anything that brings us joy is important. Ugh! Now I’ve depressed myself! Anyway, this was a valuable & thought provoking video so good on you! 🥰

I agree with everything you said but would add one of my own. I just had no idea when I started how addicted I would become. I started DPing on the advice of my pain doc who suggested a hobby I could get lost in to help with pain management. I used to be an avid knitter/crocheter, but my arthritis made doing that much too painful. I stumbled upon diamond painting and soon found I was lost in "diamond meditation" for hours on end. So, while that is a good thing pain-wise for me, I find that it keeps me from other things that I should be doing or want to be doing. Had I known about the addictive nature of this craft would I have begun? Probably, but it would have been good to have that understanding before I began. I try to never miss one of your videos. I have enjoyed and learned from every single one I've watched. Thank you for adding to my DP experience!

Excellent tips! I've been DP'ing since before the virus hit and I've learned pretty much the same things you have. I think I'm the only one on the DP planet that still uses baking paper sheets (aka parchment paper) instead of relief paper tho, lol! I buy it by the box on Amazon and they are just little 5.5 x 5.5 inch squares of baking sheets. They stick well to the canvas glue no matter which side you put down and they are highly reusuable (I also use them with my resin crafting). I bought a box of 500 sheets in 2019 for $15 - and I still have a lot! It's thinner than relief paper and you can kind of see through it.

I barely started this. I came across an image on Diamond Art Club while browsing out of curiosity and fell in love. It's a dragon (and one you wouldn't like, lots of dark colours, but I'd hang that on my wall in diamond art. Love dragons). I decided then and there I'd only get images I'd hang up as wall art as I probably won't be able to do this for long with both joint issues and the meriad of other hobbies I have. The only exception I made was getting two smaller kits to practice with (the mandala coasters, which turned out beautifully, and the Dias de los Muertos so I could practice squares with images I liked). Best decision ever. I now know I like doing it enough to at least do several big kits for wall art and also that I probably won't be able to do more than like 4 a year considering I prefer the single placer, square drills, and massive canvasses. I think doing it this way just comes with having multiple creative hobbies as well as liking books, video games, and jigsaw puzzles. You just have to choose wisely what you spend your money on. It adds up fast and I don't have time for stuff I don't love enough. So I quit reading books I don't enjoy enough, I have stopped with a couple of games and puzzles because it wasn't the place or time (or just boring). Sometimes not finishing is just better, but I don't want that with diamond painting because I have expensive taste. AI and art is also a much wider discussion. It comes up in the wider art community as well as gaming and even writing quite a bit. AI art also has the issue it's often training using copyrighted pieces without the original creator's permission. Sometimes even when the artist expressly stated their art should not be used for it. This is why I decided to only buy properly licenced kit before even starting the hobby.

You make some really good points, Daphne. Your comments about FOMO were spot on. Thank goodness I’ve only had FOMO once-About six years ago I had my eyes on a DP that I just had to have but I waited way too long to order it and by the time I wanted to actually buy it, it was sold out. I waited months for it to be restocked and it never was. I definitely had FOMO over this one! So I took the leap and reached out the company that made it and asked if it would be restocked. They let me know that even when an item is sold out and looks like it might not come back in stock again, they usually have a few on hand, put aside in their warehouse. They were nice enough to check into it for me and it turned out they actually had several of them still on hand and I was able to purchase it from them. I don’t know if all companies do this but if you have that special unicorn, like I did, I guess it can’t hurt to actually reach out to the company and ask if they have any on hand that you could purchase. My unicorn was called The Sorrowful Angel, and it’s now and always will be, my favorite dp.

I am also a hard placer and really was excited about the metal placers and glue dots. I got a metal placer pen and glue dots and every time I go to use it, the drill stick on the glue dot and won't come off on the canvas. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any tips? I purchased my first DAC kit, I had to. It is called Cleo the colorful long hair cat. I have a long haired cat named Cleo. It came today and it is massive. I didn't realize how large it would be. UGH. I have been doing some off canvas projects recently and I am enjoying them. I missed why you're moving to Canada. Work? Exciting.
@DiamondPaintingAnonymous7 ай бұрын
For the glue dots, you have to ‘dirty’ them up a bit to decrease the stick. Try dabbing the tip on your clothing lightly a few times. The glue dot will pick up some lint, but it makes the glue less sticky so the drills will release from the pen. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!!

A lot of these tips I learned along the way like you did! FOMO tip really resonated with me. Once I started setting alarms for new releases and purchasing new paintings before even paying the last ones off, I had a reality check. There's maybe three in my stash that I think I wouldn't buy if I went back. But definitely would have paced myself better!

One of the most important things I learned was that size matters. Images that are bigger (yes take longer) but are worth the the extra time and effort. I still suffer from FOMO, but not nearly at the level I did when I first started diamond painting. I love new pens, but after accumulating approximately a dozen, feel that it's an added expense that isn't necessary because I love the ones I have already. I did get a few fancy trays, but figured out that I have a few favorites and always ended up using them.. so don't really get trays anymore except if there is one made for a specific event that I would like to have. Overall, I am thrilled to have found this hobby and although my stash is excessive (see, I won't actually admit to the possibility of it being TOO excessive), I feel like I have found a balance of ones that I really love and ones that I like and think about more before purchasing. I average about 30-35 kits/yr, with only 3-5 of them being the large ones of 80x100 cm or so, the rest of them being a bit more manageable in size. I did "waste" a lot of money at the very beginning getting lots and lots of "budget" ones before I understood about the licensing, size, and quality. I still have many of them in bins. I hate to throw them out.. and thinking of contacting schools or nursing homes to see if they could use as donation. Thanks for a great video!
@DiamondPaintingAnonymous7 ай бұрын
I also have accessories that I tend to use every time. Same for me with pens and trays. I’ll buy some to try occasionally, but I generally go right back to my favs. As for your budget kits, I’m sure schools or nursing homes would love to have them to occupy kids/residents! Thanks for watching!!

@@jennyelchino9509 I just use the mini or micro size of Glue Dots (just search for glue dots on Amazon). As far kits, my usual go-to sites include Dreamer Designs, Oraloa, Bella Art Diamonds and Diamond Art Club. Be aware that licensed kits will be more expensive than budget kits. hey Daphne - great video! as you were talking about FOMO i was looking at my stash in the DAC website - i think there were just 2 i'd consider de-stashing - but, i don't need to (for money) and maybe my feelings change later. then, i looked at my wishlist on DAC - and deleted a couple - there's really just 2 out of the 23 that if they came back in stock i'd drop everything and check out asap (and use a coupon or points!). those 2 kits are Springbringer and Grand Canal and Basilica Venice - both gorgeous, big, and will be super time consuming. actually, the top 4 in my wishlist are big-a$$ squares!

Loved this video! I agree with a lot of what you said. Just an observation: the "culture" around diamond painting in the USA is so different from the rest of the world. It fascinates me endlessly to see the prices some of the kits go for in the USA.

I’m watching this a second time. Really good thoughts. One idea I had - I wonder if you took everything with you to Canada and then created a destashed group for Canadians only so if you decide you didn’t want any, you could sell to other Canadians that don’t want to pay that hefty shipping fee. That way you’d have time to decide and a possibility of still selling them.
