Hi Margarete, I just finished watching your video and it was very encouraging to me as a beginner to collage art. Your 10 points were things that I questioned myself about, and your answers were clear and concise. Thank you for taking the time to encourage others. My journey in to paper crafting is exciting and I look forward to encouragement from you and many of the other ladies as well. Thanx!!👏🏽👏🏽

So happy to hear of another “almost 82” year old out there enjoying collage and mixed media! I turn 82 in August and have always been a lover of fiber in any form but now I am in love with paper! Am working on a mixed media collage with some geese I recently found on a brochure rack on a trip to Ireland. Keep having joy with it - it keeps us young in spirit!

A lot of times when I am not so pleased with a collage, I find that when I flip through looking at past collages that I end up liking the ones I didn't like when I did them. This surprised me!

Yes! I agree…early on when learning to paint I was extremely judgmental of my work and threw so many away. When I began painting in a sketchbook and couldnt tear them out, when I went back looking thru the sketchbook I realized I wasnt as bad as I thought. And it inspired me to keep going and wait a few days or more before deciding how good or bad a piece turned out.

This was so insightful. I use the joy of creating like therapy. I love when the real world falls away and it is just me at play with paper. My craft space is my happy place. When the Dr noticed my blood pressure was high she said go to your happy place and I will retake it. I went to my craft space in my mind and my blood pressure was normal. That is the power of creating.

This video is so inspirational. Thank you. I am a clinical hypnotherapist and the word that you were searching for to describe "getting lost in the moment, zen like, blocking out all else" is actually called a "flow state". :) A flow state occurs when you combine your consciousness with an action and thus losing oneself. Entering and being in a flow state is a balance between your conscious and subconscious where time actually seems to stand still. That is why it feels that time has not moved or has moved so quickly and this is where the term time flies comes from. Flow states are considered a deep level of trance also called hypnosis where you can block out almost anything. Thanks again.

I loved your information , I wish I had known that when I first started making collages 14 years ago . 7 years ago I lost one of my 5 children , he died by suicide ( it needs to be told ). After this I abandoned our studio and only recently i I began to do some art . Mixed media & collage are what I love . Thanks for your great video . I signed up to newsletter but at this time I cannot sign to the classes , at 72 maybe is too late to change what is in my plate, financially or in other aspects. C’est La Vie , as my French teacher used to say . I greatly appreciate your teaching .

Thank you for telling me that I don’t need a focal point! I have been collaging for a while now, and I’ve found my own style which I really enjoy. But I rarely have a focal point. All the other KZbinrs that I watch say that a collage must have a focal point. All this time I’ve been thinking that I’m doing something wrong. I’ve tried making focal points, but I’ve found it so limiting. I like the rule of threes, but somewhere I saw that a collage should also follow the rule of thirds!! The rule of threes works, but I find the rule of thirds way too limiting. You are so inspiring and so encouraging. I absolutely adore your style… it is very similar to mine but, of course, yours are far better than mine as I am relatively new to this. Thank you for your wonderful videos. Lots of love 🇬🇧❤

Hello Margarete, This year is my 30th year as an educator - no, not art - a special education teacher! But I can tell you are a great teacher; one who gives permission to others to be who and what they are. You inspire me. You encourage me. You educate me. Those are the hallmarks of a great teacher. I've watched your videos here and there. They don't seem to come up in my feed often, however, I turned 60 this year and my elderly parents, who I have taken care of for the last 12 years since my children grew up and moved out, have moved into a care facility at age 89. I'm now an empty-nester (even though I still teach full-time). I know I want to travel and though all my graduate work is in the field of education, my undergraduate work was in theatrical lighting, something very very creative, I was feeling a void. But after hearing you here again today I will use the medium of collage to explore and express many feelings long-suppressed by taking care of others. So, please forgive the verbosity. All this to say, "Thank you." I am grateful for your presence here.

This is awesome i think we all put too much stress on ourselves and compare ourselves to other artists, we don’t all have the same style, mediums or even like the same things and we all started off as beginners, it’s about having fun and not putting things in our heads that we’re not good enough, i just posted my first video of my journal and it took me so long because i kept comparing myself, but i finally realised that although not everyone will find my journal good it’s my journal and i’m learning and growing every day, and i hope others will take your advice hun to just relax and have fun , Thanks hun xx

I certainly agreed with all of it. I need to work on #5-(allowing time)-& #8( not needing to work linearly,) which work hand-in-hand. I was surprised by #7, though. Once you showed us your collages, though, I could see what you meant. I think not depending on a focal point will come with practice & experience. Thank you for making this video.

That was fabulous! Thank you. I started one project (illustrating a picture book) 2-3 years ago and was surprised how long it takes. I will finish it one day as I want to collaborate on it, but in the meantime I have an idea for a project I can do on my own. Your video was very helpful.

Thank you for this! Very encouraging and all of your points are welcome advice! I find some of my attempts disappointing and occasionally discouraging, but I've now given myself permission to recycle/cut up/toss out, and that has been a relief!

I see that this video was made 2 yrs ago, I am so glad I happened upon it. I have never tried to make collage but, realized that many of the cards I make are small collages. I only make them when I’m giving them to someone and take what I know about them (words, themes, travels etc) and love making them. However, I don’t know how to just construct a collage without someone in mind. Where do I start? I’d like to make a larger picture to frame. My style is more on the grunge side, like some of the art you have done. I am moving in a couple of months so won’t be able to concentrate on art 17:29 for a time but will continue to watch your art. Thank you for such a relaxing video it encourages me to try.

Thank you Margarete ! I'm so glad you mentioned that you don't always need a focal point. Some days I get hung up on that and it stops me in my tracks with my collage. It is funny how your styles change; I so see it in my personal family scrapbooks where I use more collage work around the photos and enjoy those pages so much more. Wonderful video, as usual, and you are such a wonderful inspiration ! xoxo 🥰 Barbie

Hi, first of all, you have an incredible English! it was music for my ears, because i'm not a native english speaker. I ´ve understood everything you said about a collage art beginner. Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and tips, I agree with you in almost everything you said.

A very good video for both beginners and crafters who have been doing it for awhile. You are a very wise person to talk about this type of relaxation for the populace. It is very important to understand this. This should be fun! Carol from California

All your "things" are bang on Margarete! I have been doing collage for awhile now and have definitely noticed how much my style has changed (grown!) over the years. I recently started a destash of all my papers and am surprised how many I have "let go" because they no longer spoke to me with direction I am now going. As always you've done a lovely job with your examples and explanation.... 😊
@MargareteMiller2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I totally agree with you on letting things go that no longer work with your evolving style. We all should do a little more purging more often, right?! At least I do!

Thank you so much for this wonderful encouragement! I resonated a lot with point 8 (you don't need to work linearly). So many times I beat myself up over not completing the project I started and having several things open. I thought it was a lack of focus and perseverance but I am glad to hear, that this is perfectly normal. ❤

It sure is. Creativity is supposed to be enjoyable. You have to figure out what works for you, and sometimes that means working on a couple things at once. 👍🏼💜

Hi there Margarete, I really enjoyed this tute. You had so many excellent tips and suggestions. I found myself shaking my head in agreement, as I watched you go thru your list. One of your suggestions, I guess I had never heard before, was that you don't have to have a focal point. Hmmm, you always hear artists use that term when journaling, painting or whatever, but your right. I wish back in elementary of high school, I'd had someone like you as an art instructor. You always seem so really laid back. Thank you again for these really great suggestions and I'm going to check out your Facebook group as well. PS. I love theyour view from your big window at your workspace! Yummmmy.
