If any1 thinks it Doesn't take some smarts to be able to track & catch a fast-moving prey animal (or, better, a tossed toy), at Speed, I'd say: Try to Program a Robot do it. It's Not Easy. --- To all presenters / creators of KZbin videos, here are a few TIPS on "How to the Get Best Audio for your video": 1. Get the Microphone as Near to each speaker's Mouth as Possible The Thorium Community has a Terrific documentary Filmmaker in Canada (YT channel: Gordon McDowell ), who travels the World capturing talks, panel discussions, debates, etc. on New Nuclear Reactors (eg, Safe, Small, Green, Liquid-Fuel, MSR = Molten Salt Reactors, due ~2030). He's perfected the art of capturing Great Audio, eg, by clipping a tiny MP3+Recorder to each speaker's lapel(s). He use 1 or 2 tiny (slightly-modified = a free firmware upgrade) devices. The result is: Even in a fairly Noisy place (eg, busy restaurant, etc. if Not an extremely noisy disco), a speaker's voice is heard Way Above the Noise. Even in a Home, Office or less noisy Auditorium, getting the mics near the mouth can keep room echos & other distractions out of the soundscape of your YT video. If you don't want to "scare" would-be viewers away before you win due credit for their having been attracted to your videos, keep the mic close to speakers' mouths, so it's easy to listen & hear them. Many TED talks show the presenter wearing a head-mounted "boom mic'" Their voices are crystal-clear, & I've only seen 1 case where it was at all problematic (Cf "Letting go of God" by Julia Sweeney; also on KZbin; view it also for its Humor) 2. Better to Speak Slowly & Be Easily Understood Compare these 2 TED talks: (faster pace) KZbin: "Thorium: Kirk Sorensen at TEDxYYC" Enjoy Kirk's Passion; miss a bit when he "speeds-up" (slower pace) KZbin: "Pedersen TEDxCopenhagen" Subtle Danish hints of passion; you may take more info home --- I hope this helps... :~)

I think sometimes the people have a harder time getting used to them than the dogs do in a new home. Ours came right from the track. We had to teach them stairs, outside potty and outside obedience. They listened great. Yay Grey's!!!

Hi there me and my family have always had greyhounds and they are the best dogs we love them but one thing to keep in mind there is very rarely a greyhound that can live with a cat without killing it. Even if the owners tell you they are fine with cats I can assure they are probably not fine. Anyway have a nice day.

I’m on my 4th greyhound. The one with us now is very smart but failed at the track. He is not only smart but calm, loving, and playful. My 3rd one raced to age 4 and had the scars/injuries that led to a short life. He was easy going and just enjoyed retirement. My second one lost his battle with cluster idiopathic seizures at age 2 after multiple hospitalizations and took 30 pills a day. He was loving to the end. My first one raced and was so sweet and easy though s perhaps not real smart. She was a “survivor” did what she needed to do. Loved riding on my golf cart and laying in the grass. She lived with two cat siblings they got on so well they were often at the feeding bowls together. She lived 2 months shy of 14! There are many books out there you can read about them and learn their breed care. They physically different then other breeds of dogs so you’ll need a greyhound savy vet. They are loving, lazy and enjoy just hanging around you.

This video is lovely and thank you for championing the greyhound (they need it) although I would say the never letting a grey hound off leash comment concerns me a bit, if you have a rescue yes your right you can’t just let them off untrained and take taking risk but you owe it to them to find local areas where they can run RUNNING is when you see these awesome dogs display pure joy, dog parks enclosed fields or areas that a big but fenced in are a absolute must, we’re in the uk and while obviously where you guys are the focus is on not letting them off ,here you would struggle to adopt if you couldn’t prove ample safe running / playing space is available !

This just came up on my reccomended. Great video Brittany! I am on my 2nd pair of adopted ex-racers. A male and female both times. First pair lived to be 14 years old each, so the whole myth about bigger dogs living shorter lives was proven wrong. Major and Sprinkles, my current pair, were fostered together which helped during transition into my care. I liked that you brought up the contract thing as many people give me weird looks when i explain the process. Future adopters should also be told thier backyards will become makeshift racetracks and there will be no grass growing in the corners!! The poop thing made me laugh, how true!! With or without my dogs i think i always have a poop bag in a pocket!! Hope you keep making videos and best of luck to all of you!😁

Some really good points. Id add to it they are very strong dogs. Much stronger than i expected from their slight frame. Mine has penchant for pulling the leash and with bk injury his behaviour is particulary painful. He is with training getting much better but its a work in progress. I had alsatian in the past strong enough to pull a wee sledge in winter and to my surprise the greyhound we adopted is not far from that level of strenght. He spent 7 years racing in Macau and he just cant get enough of the outside world so i cant blame him for his curiosity really. Greyhound did not get the memo about being sleepy lazyboi and he talks..a lot. He'll whine to join in on conversation whine because service is too slow and he wants his food right now whine because he saw a cat and has to leave the house asap with one of his hoomans on super urgent business 😂 he ll sleep but not all day he will want to play min 20 min after each walk. Ah and he will walk as long as you ll let him. He did not get the two 20min waljs a day only memo. He goes out for 2-3 long walks and few 5 min walks whenever he needs them.

I had a grey once. She was the best dog I ever had. We would get together with other people that had greys and have play dates and picnics. It was a blast. What you didn't say when you spoke about the thin skin of the greyhound and them needing a muzzle. It is because they love to play and those teeth get caught on that thin skin when they mouth play. You also have to be careful when they jump on each other. Those toenails can cut also. Two more points about greyhounds is they don't do anesthesia well. So it that surgery isn't VERY important don't do it. And flea medication. I only used 1/2 of the flea med the dr gave me. It is very strong and they just don't do meds very well. Ok. that's it. You have a beautiful greyhound. Enjoy everyday with him!!

The idea that you can't let a greyhound off the lead is not fair on the dog. I homed a greyhound 4 yrs ago who has a really high prey drive. However it's something that I manage. Greyhounds are born to run and it's lovely to see them run and play with other dogs. Firstly I use a muzzle to prevent him from catching rabits, deer etc. Secondly I choose where to let him off the lead i.e. away from livestock. No off the lead time for a greyhound is no quality of life for them.

I walk with my greyhound off the lead all the time, it really depends on the dog. My dog did 70 races on the track but the prey drive down is a trate of any hound. Mine hound has a super high prey drive, but I walk him on farm fields everyday, I just have to watch out for rabbits and squirrels!
@leonischmid13754 жыл бұрын
Hi I had 3 greyhounds. None off them could walk off leash. Do you do any training? Because my dogs see the rabbits before I see them. They have a really high hunting drive and they smell them. They also look constantly for animals when we walk. For me it seems impossible to let them off the leash. Doesn't your hound run away when he sees them? I am very interested and would love to let them off leash because they need to run otherwise mine aren't fully occupied. And there are no dog areas around.
@lachlanmorrison11994 жыл бұрын
@@leonischmid1375 yeah I did a bit of training but nothing formal. We start off going to enclosed paddocks and every time we came back when I called him a gave him a small treat. Then once I was confident ish with that i took him to enclosed footpaths or parks and did the same. Then just kept getting bigger and bigger until he now walks entirely off the lead. It's hard to spot the rabbits first, but I suppose it depends where you walk, I find large open fields good, because i have a good line of sight and can recall him for corners ect. I've had limited success recalling him if he has spotted a rabbit before me but you have to be super quick and break the trance before they run off. It takes time, but it is possible!
@lachlanmorrison11994 жыл бұрын
Even now I still give him treats upon recall and we're 2 years in 😂
@snakecharmerism4 жыл бұрын
@@lachlanmorrison1199 that's exactly how I did it although being inner city swap enclosed paddocks for enclosed basketball courts, then enclosed dog parks (they are tiny in london), small parks then the big parks and canal paths. Ditto with breaking the prey drive trance, can snap her out of it and get recall but needs to be done fast..that said I'm not bothered about her getting rats and squirrels, just the risk of killing a cat or chasing one into the road. No cats in big parks, so that just leaves the risk of the odd encounter with a canal boat cat. Funny story I came across a group of boaters by the canal under a tree where one of their kittens had climbed up 20 feet and was stuck on a branch and couldn't get down. I tied up hound and climbed up and managed to get the kitten and was half way down when it ran down the rest of the tree and jumped straight towards the dog. Dog lunged at the kitten and missed it by about a foot thankfully. Could have been a very different story...Man throws kitten from tree to feed dog!

Fence your yard cuz u can let them run...although u don't need to let them run as long as u leash walk. Sensitive belly is not a big deal. Feed them what they ate @ their rescue. We never muzzled once home. As for prey drive, ours were small animal tested as we told rescue we had cats. Separation anxiety is cuz they are raised & raced in kennels. Take them out on leash every 2 hrs whether u think they need to pee or not & praise any pee pee or poo poo outside. Took us less than 24 hrs to train ours. You will never know a better love!

I totally agree with you. I had 3 greyhounds. None of them could walk off leash. They like to hunt so badly. I let them run in my garden. With one of them it was possible to let him off leash for a bit in areas which are animal low but he had a very low hunting drive. Of course you can work with them but one time my dog jumped off my balcony which is 2m high just because he saw a cat. Luckily he had no injuries at all but it is very dangerous to let them off leach. Of course some might have no hunting drive. But I am really surprised when I see a greyhound off leash because I just can't imagine that with mine. If anybody has some recommendations I am very interested :)

To be fair, I’m from a small town near the Canadian border and that weather is not good for them. I also think people who have greyhounds, especially ones that have raced before, need to be aware that they will probably be extremely food orientated. when the greyhounds raced, they usually would be with other dogs in small kennels and there would be a competition for food. So when they get adopted, they aren't used to having food all to themselves. so they will often try and go for other peoples food as they feel as if they need to fight for it to survive. Often, greyhounds being adopted are previous racing greyhounds who did badly in races, so they never received any special treatment from their owners as they didn't win. So just beware to shut your cupboards, and your bins! I am speaking from personal experience but have talked to many owners who have had the same experience as me :)

I'd like to add one that I never see online in any guide but have actually heard as a reason for an adoption failure: These dogs don't like to roughhouse. They don't do it with people and rarely with other dogs. Most Greyhounds like to chase but they don't like to mouth or paw one another or make any kind of other contact. They have thin skin that can tear easily, which might explain why they don't play rough. If you have a dog that does it may not get along with the Greyhound unless it can learn to respect the Greyhound's space. Some people want very confident dogs and from what I've seen Greyhounds are very sensitive. They aren't the kind of dog that will unreservedly tackle new experiences without worry. Those videos online of dogs who accidentally run through screen doors and barely notice, or pick up huge sticks only to run them into narrow doorways without caring -- those things would've scared my dog and put an end to playtime. If you want a dog who will happily try anything at least once without hesitation, or follow your lead with very little encouragement, this is not the kind of dog for you. It can turn new or unplanned experiences into a chore because you'll have to take the time to introduce the dog to the new thing instead of just getting up and going. For example, you want to go camping. The dog spends 20 minutes being freaked out by the tent and you spend an hour trying to coax it to go inside. I'm sure you're saying "but you can plan for that!" Yes, but there's lots of unexpected things you can't plan for, and if you're not a patient person you can become frustrated by this breed's sensitivity.

I have a whippet which is extremely similar to a greyhound and my dad has always had greyhounds and there has never been an issue with having them of a lead as long as you train the properly so don’t worry about letting them of the lead as long as they are trained to come back. One tip is if you are getting a puppy I would recommend letting them of a lead on there first walk so that they can get used to it straight away and when meeting other dogs, not to pick them up and just let the explore.

Not read all the comments but did you mention just how destructive they are. Nothing is sacred. We do allow ours to run. No trouble so far. He does not trouble our cats but he does not get too close. Very fragile dogs. Wonderful pets. Agree with everything you say. ESP separation anxiety. Two one male one female seems best

Fellow grey owner here. Your point about food being pricey is correct BUT please look into switching from grain-free food. DCM is a horrible heart condition and many of our greys are dropping dead much too early from it thanks to the grain-free/limited ingredient food trend. It's best to stick with brands that align with the WSAVA guidelines. They do not name specific companies but a list of things to look for when choosing foods. Our grey does great on ProPlan, some of them need the sensitive stomach blend due to tummy issues but others do fine on the plain meat/rice blends.

I have an ex-racer greyhound and we own a fenced off field and we trained her off leash there within six months. Now three years into owning her we go everywhere with her off lead we live next to a large field and wood.

Look into cooking food for your greyhound. It takes a little more time and effort but it can be cheaper. If you choose to do this look into what they can and can not eat 🧡

Not true. I know a couple of people who have adopted ex-racing greyhounds. Both bitches and who were gentle and had fab natures. Both never won races but were placed numerous times but were then "discarded". After a period of settling in and taken for walks, both were determined they did not have that "drive for chasing". They walk off lead to this day and have both been trained to a recall - never had any problems.

Our greyhound is broken haha. He's not very affectionate. He enjoys his own company while also suffering separation anxiety....how does that work? He's very vocal when he wants something, we take him on three walks a day because he's a livewire. He even managed a 16 mile walk a few weeks ago. Theres always one that differs from the norm :D

Hi, I keep hearing that you cannot let a greyhound off the leash, but they do need to run every once in a while, right? So how do you deal with that? I´m considering adopting one, but there are no fenced dog parks where I live and I don´t have a garden, so I don´t think it would be as good of an idea for me as I thought when I started researching the dogs.

If he won't hurt a fly.... Why put the muzzle on?
@dogshome71104 жыл бұрын
Good point about prey drive. I have had three exceptions in the several I have owned. Ellie plays with cats and won't chase anything. Kim chased out of reaction, but I trained to snap out of it. Mel would not harm a fly. Two or more greyhounds together will form a pack though and can be fine, but can easily go bad for small furry things even with the gentlest dog. Outside at dusk is the worst time - they like to hunt then. Being inside generally switches it off. Clyde is a killer and can't be trusted with anything. He took out two Crows at once in the back yard last week. Lovely dog, very obedient and loves humans, but things moving outside flips the red mist on. They can also die of exhaustion if a single dog is chasing something. If they don't give up or catch it in a minute or less, they are in the danger zone. Even high value treats like dried tripe won't override the instinct.I helped save another dog who had escaped by blocking the road with the car. The other drivers though I was crazy. The hare changed direction, dog got it and stopped running. The owner and I then grabbed the dog but the hare was dead almost instantly before that. It would have been dead dog and/or hare after much longer. I am lucky in that one dog I can let off almost anywhere, the other one when I am absolutely sure there are no rabbits, yorkshire terriers etc liable to appear. So he only gets free once or twice a month and has to go on the lead the rest of the time.

Great video, Brittany. You might want to offer to link this video from your adoption organization’s website. You covered lots of the bases! The only thing you didn’t mention that We dealt with in our adoptions was the depression they go thru for about the first 2 months when they are missing other dogs. Our first grey was so sad, missing other canine company, that we adopted a second one. Then SHE went thru it, also! But we adopted directly from the racetrack... Thanks for sharing your experience!
@britbroersma4 жыл бұрын
Grover Shell Thank you so much for bringing that up, i would love to make a video all about that!! Our boy dealt heavily with depression, and genuinely the only thing that helped was having another dog in the home. Even when you go the route of fostering, it is slim to rare that they’re ever alone at any point. A second dog was the only solution for our boy, and his personality came out SO strongly. He’s a very strong leader and we really believe he needed someone to “follow his lead”!
@grovershell28504 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked out!! Ours snapped out of it about a week After we got the second dog. Then the second dog went through it also, they both probably would’ve been fine on their own, and they didn’t really like each other all that much. I think we would’ve been fine just keeping the first dog and working with him through it, but I didn’t know that piece of information until it was too late! But we enjoyed them both very much and they had great lives!

Great video! One question though, if your dog isn’t aggressive why does he have to wear a muzzle when he goes out?
@mindtpi5 жыл бұрын
It's the law in lots of places, plus they have a strong prey drive and if a small animal they don't know runs away from them, there's a chance they will take off after it, so better safe than sorry. It's not to stop them biting people or anything like that, they're not aggressive at all.
@sumayaiwaszkiewicz22315 жыл бұрын
In Australia, we have a program called Greenhounds. It retrains Greyhounds to limit their prey drive and legally allows them go roam around muzzle-free when in an off-leash area.

I don't get what the muzzle had to do with the thin skin? I may have missed something tho Thanks for the video ❤
