Once again, thank you very much Mr. Ben for all you do for us fishy folks. l’ve started to use vitamin C slowly into the tanks when I do water changes along with aquarium, co-ops water conditioner. l am attempting to use less and less conditioner and more vitamin C and the fish health seems to be improving. There are only a few animals on the planet that do not need vitamin C as they produce their own.

12:20 pm. One of the best changes made to my fishroom is unplugging all the heaters. I have a room heater to minimize fluctuations from my central home heating system. The room is set to 70 degrees and the water in all my tanks is typically 76 degrees during the winter months. Lights, pumps, filters create ambient heat that lifts the tank temperatures by about 6 degrees. I have a temperature alarm on the room to catch any heatig issues. No more heater failures, no more replacing heaters, lower electricity consumption. Have done this for 2 years without a failure and have the old heaters available should I need them

Very interesting program, never stop learning, listening at home in Thailand.

I agree with you 100%. Don't trust any tank heaters. Always use a controller with your heater.

In Norway, where I live, we call the Multiple Tank Syndrome "Liter Sjukan", which would translate to "the Gallon Sickness" in English. I am currently upgrading my aquarium room, my MTS will get better, but my LS/GS will get worse! When all is changed up (probably in a year or two!) I will have reduced my current 8 tanks to 6. But I'm going from about 1025 liter/270 gallons to between 2490-2850 liter/658-753 liters depending on exactly how big the largest 2 tanks I plan for I can find used. It will save me a lot of work though, since I will build an easier system for water changes, nothing fancy, but I don't have to fill them up bucket by bucket!

Getting away from buckets is a game changer. "Gallon Sickness" - hilarious!

The next time I am in the market looking at new houses, testing the tap water is something I will be doing.

@11:45 Fish are evolving like everything else. If the name of the genetic game is to breed and further the line, hobby bred fish are winning that game. And then theres that whole natural and/or artificial selection thing..... German bred Discus are a good example.

If my tap water had loads of nitrates I'd be worried for mine own health yet alone fishes' health!

awesome. didn't expect to make a Ochart video. hope I can help. I do have one more. let your water sit overnight or and see if you have carbon dioxide in your tap water the PH will shift up. mine shifts from 7.6 to 8.4 which can cause issues. keep up the great work Ben.

@BenOchart I'm pretty sure that this caused my severum to get fin rot and he eventually died. However I had another tank with no issues. So hard to say but I now heat and store water to gas it off before all water changes and no issues to date after.

Salt as a treatment works just fine for certain parasitic and bacterial infections by aiding the slime coat and killing the parasites. BUT only fish with scales can tolerate aquarium salt. _Aquarium_ salt. Scaleless fish like catfish and loaches dont tolerate salt well.
@BenOchart12 күн бұрын
I'm currently treating a green terror with some salt. He's got something going on inside. I've treated with parasite med's (twice) so now I'm trying salt.

I learned a good trick for fishkeeping, if you pre-soak your replacement filter sponge in an airtight container with some bacteria in a bottle about 24 hours before your filter cleaning, it will be infused enough to avoid the potential ammonia/nitrite bloom that would come from a fresh from the box replacement. Any extra will just be pushed into the chemical media before finally giving the main tank a small boost Here's the process: Step 1: rinse the sponge Step 2: dunk into fish tank Step 3: put soaked sponge in container Step 4: add bacteria and seal container Step 5: leave sit for 18-24 hours before filter change

Instead of replying on my bigger tanks to be more "forgiving", Ill just not "sin" to begin with! I love my fish to much to risk them
@mikeeljahosafats323113 күн бұрын
How would gravel cleaning cause an ammonia spike?
@BenOchart12 күн бұрын
In a young tank with benefical bacteria starting to get established, a lot of it can be in the substrate. That can get disrupted with a deep vacuuming creating a situation where the BB has to now catch up with the amount of ammonia. While that is happening the ammonia (and nitrite) level in the tank can become deadly.

I just found out why my fish were dying,I've been doing a water change then adding prime and filling tank from the hose.bad mistake
@BenOchart12 күн бұрын
The Prime part, so long as you're treating for the full volume of the tank, should be okay, however, particularly in the winter, that hose water can be very cold.

One thing no one told me was how expensive the fish I really like are, compared to the fish I really don't care for.
@BenOchart12 күн бұрын
True. Large African Cichlids have become almost unaffordable and if one has salt water fish, forget about it! This is probably creating a shift over to community fish.
