I keep a 300 gallon aquarium in my garage. I had to deal with having to top it off every week. The water did seem to evaporate a lot faster in the garage since it dose stay warmer. I eventually added a toilet fill valve, at the return end of the sump, next to the return pump. it saves me the time and energy of having to top it off. I never have to worry about evaporation any more. I've been gone from home for months at a time. Of course before I leave I place an automatic feeder to feed my fishes. upon my return from extend long term away from home, I maintain the sump and tank if I have to. I've left it untouched for almost a year and everything functioned fine

I run 3 emperor 400's(15 years old) and an fx6. Nothing polishes the water like the H.O.B. fx6 gets cleaned every 6 months, H.O.B. gets cleaned every other water change(2 weeks). Emperors are work horse's. Marineland makes a new version of them with internal pump(self priming). I still see the older ones for sale everywhere.

I looked at them online they ship but it would be really expensive. There tanks aren’t cheap either. But it’s quality that you pay for. Your tanks are pretty Ben. The fish look happy in those tanks lol. What’s the warranty on the tanks? Ben my expertise filter broke and was really loud. It also would suck water in to the tube line and the bubbles would stop. No matter what I did it would do the same thing in a few days. It would get me so frustrated until it finally died. Lasted like a year or less. Not a good purchase I know you recommended them. I wanted to tell you the issues I had with mine. My green killing machine UV also died but it was two years old and they aren’t replaceable parts. So I bought a sun sun HW 3000 the upgraded model of the 704b. It has a digital screen and can control the flow. I love the filter it has a lot of room for media. Hopefully you get to try one of them out.

With sponge filters, I reach in with a cup, go under the filter, get it in the cup and pull it out slowly. Helps so much with the gunk floating everywhere. I have 2 other tanks with sponges and that has always driven me nuts. The cup I use is actually not quite a "cup," but a taller wider thing lke ...i don't know, the size of something take-out rice would be? lol. I also have sponges on my intake of one of my tanks because shrimp, and I do it the same way, I just have to pull the filter off, ofc, and I do it faster pulling it out. I'm too sexy for my tank. I plan to have plants covering the area around the sponge, which will be great to hide it. There's no way I'd put a smoky filter because this is my first 'artsy" tank, so I'm going to be super attentive to the look more than my bigger ones. I've seen some clear HoB that I might think about, but I'll probably just let the sponge and plants to do the job (maybe removing the filter when the plants are heavy and established).

Ben, Wealth of knowledge and tips that you have. I wanted to tell you that I finally got a canister filter for my 5ft tank. I got a SunSun hw 3000 the model that replaced the 704b or the newer model of the 704b. Because I think you can still buy the 704b. I filled it with sponges in two trays and the other two trays has matrix in them for BB. It’s so quiet and I love the flow. Thank you for the videos on the sun sun 704b I will follow your maintenance tips also. I bought the aquarium safe lubricant for the o rings. I can’t believe the filter is 130 bucks. I am happy with the purchase. Been running for almost a week now. I need to get a container to put it in in case it might leak. Appreciate the videos.

I agree with everything you said. Very good info. I love sumps, but I dont use check valves. I always setup my return line high in the tank. I always drill holes in the return line ( drill them on the sides so they dont spray up ). I just let it back flow when I turn off pumps. !!! The most important thing is getting the water level correct !!!

I have rosy red minnows. I had 6 and lost 1 a couple of days ago. The ammonia was 0 but the nitrite was at 1ppm and the rest of the water parameters were good. The tank water has been on the warm side, close to 80. Could it have been the temperature? The one fish started swimming upside down and floating and then it would revive but died over night.

Cool set up. Are there return pumps in each of the breeders? In the event of pump failure, if the room can get cold, you might want a heater in the tank as well. I have one in the sump and in the tank.

After years with socks, my best change is replacing them with blue bond media. Less maintenance and nearly 10x the detritus removed prior to clogging the sponges. After using rapidly growing refugium plants like watersprite i am once again convinced available algae scrubbers are merely novelties and the limited amount of algae produced does very little to reduce nitrates. Great update, glad you are a sponge advocate

Have you ever used an above tank sump? Seems like it would be a safer bet. If your pump stops working, the water would simply drain back into your tank.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 6 күн бұрын
Water draining from an over the tank sump to an aquarium would overflow the tank unless the tank was running with a low water line. The under-the tank sump water level is kept at a level so that if the pump stops the water that returns to the sump will not overflow it. There are other safeguards as well, like one-way flow valves that stop a back siphon.

I have always wanted a flower horn, but I didn’t for that same reason and even I couldn’t stand to justify the ducal hump every time someone walks by the tank. Piranha are just too specific and require loads of room. Arrowanna I wanna say I’ve only ever seen put in the correct set up about 10 times but absolutely, prolific, jumpers. Koi are gorgeous and grow faster than you could ever think. This being said if you time it right and grow out 5-7 at 12$-20$ in a 75, come June those fish could be 120$ to the right buyer with a fish with good colour 👍. And I agree about the pleco, as is I have 2 rapheal cat I never see that were not super expensive but even my bristlenose hides 98-% of the time. Jeeze hope that wasn’t too judgy, great video and stay happy and healthy my friend! 😊 ❤

I love them too. They are absolute work horses for me. Like you, I have multiple brands in my fish den, but I think my favorites are the Tidal 110s and the AquaClear 110s. I have two AquaTop 110s running too that I love, but they don't make them anymore, so I can't recommend them. But yeah, the truth for me is, I run all three types (HOB, Sponges, & Canisters) on all my tanks over 120 gallons. A sump filter MIGHT be the best filter in the hobby, but I don't have any drilled tanks and have never tried one of the external sump systems, so I can't speak on them at all.

@Whips_World
@Whips_World 5 күн бұрын
@BenOchart The Tidal for sure. AquaClear/Fluval has made changes to their filter that I haven't personally seen or worked with, so I can't promise the same quality they had been. Both Jason from Prime Time and John from KGTropicals have said they like them, though. I haven't had any luck with the Marineland Emperor 400, but I have at least four of the Marineland Penguin 350s up and running in my fish room, too. For me, they are strong filters as well. My only real issue with them is that the motors can get noisy after a couple years, but in a fish room, that's not really something I worry about. Not with all the other noises going on in there. The one thing I can say about the updated version, the Marineland 375, is that it doesn't fit on any of .y tanks over 55 gallons, and the intake tube is so big that it doesn't allow the glass canopy lid to close into the frame. It has to rest on top of the frame. I have not tried the Marineland 450, and because of the 375, I likely never will.
