Today we check out some don't do's of San Fran, based on www.sftravel.com's article.
Don’t pack a tropical wardrobe; the mercury hovers around 60 degrees even in summer.
Don’t park on a hill or even a slope without cramping your wheels to the curb, setting the hand brake and putting the car in parking gear. It’s the law.
Don’t stand directly behind a cable car gripman; you’ll get the wind knocked out of you when he jerks back on the brake lever.
Don’t send for an ambulance if you hear a chorus of moans, groans, grunts and wails, it’s the foghorns.
Don’t carry a milk pail to Cow Hollow; the old dairy district west of Van Ness Avenue has become a popular shopping sector.
Don’t call cable cars trolleys; they’re powered by the moving steel cable you hear humming in the slot beneath your feet.
Don’t plan to go swimming in San Francisco Bay unless you’re a member in good standing of the Polar Bear Club.
Don’t board a public conveyance without exact fare; the drivers don’t make change.
Don’t be caught without an umbrella; the coastal mists are capricious.
Don’t color the bridge over the Golden Gate gold; it’s International Orange.
It’s ’”the city by the bay” not “the city on the bay”
Above all, don’t call it “Frisco” or “San Fran.”

You can say “SF” or “the city”

There was clearly only about five minutes put into researching this episode. The notes about the weather, curbing your wheels, the bus fare and not calling it Frisco or San Fran are probably the only semi-useful ones. Now, let me do this right (without repeating the couple useful ones in the video): 1. Don't block the sidewalk! People actually live here. It's not Disneyland. There is little more infuriating to a local than a family of tourists, walking five across, waddling along and paying no attention to the fact that people are trying to get around them. Walk in tight pairs and keep to the right (just like slow traffic on a road) so city-dwellers can get by at city-dweller speed (which is power-walking, even on the hills). 2. The city is FULL of homeless people and drug addicts. Don't stare. It's rude (they are human too) and eye contact will most likely only encourage unwanted attention. And dont expect a reaction when you tell a local about the crazy guy with no pants standing in the middle of a busy street, screaming at the cars... we've seen it all and nothing shocks us anymore. We're too busy trying to get past the tourists blocking the sidewalk and hoping we can get through one day without hearing a tourist complain about having to pay for a shopping bag - which leads to... 3. There is a fee for shopping bags. Most places charge a fee of 10 or 25 cents for a shopping bag. Before you start screaming at your cashier (who has NO control over this and gives ZERO fucks that it bothers you), realize that it is a city tax and the money goes toward recycling and beautification efforts for the city. It also reduces waste and you will notice a lack of ugly plastic bags floating around like tumbleweeds or clogging drains. Most locals carry bags when they go shopping and keep a collapsible bag in their backpack or purse. You should too! 4. Don't expect to spend your trip riding around on cable cars. There are only a few still in operation and their main purpose is to shuttle tourists from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf since there is a steep hill between. Plan your trip carefully using the bus system but be prepared to make some quick transfers. Also, have your change ready and be speedy about boarding the bus! Most people here don't own a car, so most people commute by bus. If you take all day to get on the bus, chatting with the driver, counting your change and being picky about where to sit or stand, everyone will hate you. Important note: when exiting the bus from any door other than the front, you have to step down on the bottom step to open the door. That's what everyone is trying to tell you when angrily screaming "Step down!" at you while you stand there, looking like an idiot, trying to push the door open. 5. Have extra money on a debit or credit card matching your ID when checking into your hotel. Most hotels require a security deposit at check-in (usually $50-$100). This is not an SF-isolated thing, but it's amazing how many tourists claim they have NEVER been charged a deposit. Keep in mind that city hotels have a high turnover and, as nice as you may look, they don't know you and need a security buffer to ensure their property is treated with respect. If you know you won't damage the room, you should feel safe knowing you will get it back at the end. 6. Fisherman's Wharf is the SF equivalent of Times Square - meaning you should see it once, but realize it's a tourist trap and then focus the rest of your visit on seeing the real SF. SF, though small in square miles, is incredibly diverse with discernable districts and sub-districts - many people refer to SF as the New York of the West Coast. Great places to explore: The SoMa (South of Mission) District and Mission District (especially Valencia Street between 16th St and 24th St) for good food, interesting shops and a variety of clubs, Alamo Square District (cute shops and lovely parks), Twin Peaks (best view in the city), Haight Street (pronounced like "hate") for the hippie vibe or Castro to check out the LGBT scene and historical district, and for a little escape from the rush of things, be sure to see the San Francisco Botanical Garden (in Golden Gate Park) or Sutro Baths (near the Cliff House at Ocean Beach). 7. Don't flash the cash! Be subtle about pulling out money and expensive gadgets. You may see locals with them, but they know when and where to hide them. You don't. Just play it safe. That said, keep valuables in your front pockets and hold onto your backpack or purse at all times. Opportunists abound and it literally only takes a second of taking your hand off a bag (or even just loosening your grip) for a thief to snatch it - and boy are they quick! And don't bother making a police report. The police have more important things to worry about and thieves know what they are doing. You will never see that bag again. 8. Don't bother driving unless you are going out of the city. Navigating the streets can be incredibly confusing and terrifying with tight roads, many one-way streets, unexpected street divisions which force you to turn onto an undesired street, aggressive drivers and a generally bizarre layout. Not to mention, parking is expensive and often impossible to find. Public transportation, walking and (hello technology) Uber are your very good friends. 9. Don't go to chain restaurants like Joe's Crab Shack or Starbucks. San Francisco is so full of amazing local eateries and coffee shops which will only enhance your experience and make you feel like a part of the city. Not to mention, trying something you've never tried before is part of the San Francisco lifestyle! 10. Don't be afraid to talk to people. Locals may seem cold at first, but once you make it clear that you're not asking for directions to the Golden Gate Bridge or the closest cable car stop, they will warm up. Most San Franciscans love to share what they know and love and, who knows, you may even make a quick friend or get hooked up with a discount or entry to a sold-out event. Bonus Note: Marijuana is basically legal or, more accurately, loosely enforced. Unless someone is causing a problem or is caught with a large amount, the police wont be doing anything about it. So don't be shocked by the guy lighting up outside Walgreens. This also means... smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Hey Lachasity. Sorry for the late reply. San Francisco is a major food city, so I'll give you some of my favorites, but definitely be adventurous and explore! For the most part, I am going to keep my list at the lower end to moderate level of pricing as, while traveling, you will probably want to stick to a budget. Have fun! Burgers and Sandwiches: -Brickhouse Cafe & Bar [at Brannan & Ritch] -Roam Artisan Burgers [at Union & Octavia] (beef, turkey, veggie or buffalo burgers!) -Yellow Submarine [at 6th & Irving] (Boston style sandwiches - be sure to order with hot sauce and add fries) Chinese: -Bamboo Chinese Restaurant [at Polk & California] -Yee's Chinese [at Grant between Broadway & Pacific] (this one is a pretty authentic place, with ducks hanging in the window, etc...) Crepes: -Honey Honey (at Post & Taylor) -Squat & Gobble (at West Portal & Ulloa) Diner: -Bayside Cafe [at Bayshore and Hester] (nothing fancy, but a great view) -Lori's Diner [at Sutter & Powell] (50's style diner near Union Square) -Pinecrest Diner [at Geary & Mason] (greasy diner goodness) Italian: -Sodini's Green Valley Restaurant [on Green at Grant] (classic Italian - it's just like Lady & the Tramp!) -The Stinking Rose [at Broadway & Columbus] (authentic Italian with an emphasis on the garlic) Japanese: -Cha-Ya [at 19th & Mission] (vegan sushi) -Elephant Sushi [at Hyde St & Delgado] -Ryoko's Japanese Restaurant & Bar [at Taylor & Cosmo] -Japan Town is a wonderful mall of food and shops. I highly recommend just wandering through until you find a noodle shop that catches your eye. Mexican and Taqueria: -Gracias Madre [at 18th & Mission] -La Tortilla [at 18th & Castro] -Nick's Crispy Tacos [at Polk & Broadway] (an SF favorite) -Taqueria Cancun [at 19th & Mission] Pizza: -North Beach Pizza [at Grant & Union) -Xtreme Pizza [at Union & Buchanan] Thai: -Lemongrass (at Polk & Union) -The Old Siam [at Ellis & Mason] -Tamarind Hall [at Grant & Vallejo] Other: -Alamo Drafthouse Cinema [on Mission between 21st & 22nd] (restaurant food while you watch the movie!) -Asia SF [at 9th & Howard] (Asian fusion food with transgender wait staff and a great floor show!) -Belltower [at Polk & Jackson] (for good drinks and fun food like truffle mac & cheese, this is a great place) -Palm House [at Union & Buchanan] (Caribbean food in a cabana style building - it feels like you're on an island!)

Sorry guys but some of this info is rubbish, I don't know where you got it. No one, ever has brought a milk carton to cow hollow. Useless advice. There is no need for an umbrella at all times as SF has been in a drought for the last few years, and it doesn't rain that often in the year. However do have extra layers on, that you can take on and off at all times as the weather is temperamental. (FYI redundant point since you already mentioned to not show up with only summer clothes). And lastly no one is dumb enough to call an ambulance for a fog horn, which has a very distinctive sound. Please be mindful of talking about RELEVANT tips.

You guys missed one of the best easy things to do in SF and that's to do a walking tour. The entire city can be walked and Chinatown to Fisherman's Wharf is only about a half hour. My most favorite spot is Lombard street (that's the weird curvy one that been in every movie filmed there ). It has an evil side: at the top of that street, it continues and descends quite a bit to meet up with Van Ness street. That three block descent is one of the steepest streets I've ever walked down, very nearly approaching the incline of a staircase. I'm not kidding. Your thumbnail on this video was probably shot there. If you fall down on this street, you will probably roll all the way down.

previously lived in the bay area for 10 years or so and never needed an umbrella, it only rained in late winter for a short period of the year, and it got cold at night and hot during the day. exept in winter (same time of year it rained) you only needed a light or medium jacket. there are places in the east bay that get slightly over 100 degrees while itll be in the 70s and 80s in san francisco and other places near the ocean, ive even had it cold with rain in san francisco county, drive up 101 past marin county to sonoma county and its sunny and 80 degrees all day, it was always wierd when you get sent home for rain then drive home and its perfect weather 30 minutes or so away.

That umbrella stuff really only applies in the winter. Always carry one of those small folding ones in the winter. Either that or get used to running into the nearest Walgreen's to buy yet another one when you get caught in an unexpected downpour.

Also know: If you have kids, and you want to use Public transit to GGBTP, how do u get there? Note: only adults (18 and up) cannot travel on Golden gate transit between SF downtown and the GGBTP because there are local muni services to replace those passengers. How to get from Downtown SF to GGBTP: Weekdays: use Muni Metro light rail L Taraval to 19th Ave/ Taraval or N Judah to 19th/Judah (whichever is most convient) to muni bus line 28 19th Ave (not 28R, you’ll end up in the Richmond), The local 28. However, to Sausalito on GGT, it’s a different story. You can bring your kids on either the ferry or the GGT 30 northbound from Salesforce TC. Exit at Harbor way/ Sausalito TC.

How about if your at a red light on a steep hill in San Francisco, your driving a automatic, do you just keep your foot on the break? or do you pull the break up and put it in park until the light is green?
@RaymondHng
@RaymondHng 7 жыл бұрын
Keep your foot on the brake when stopped at a red light on a hill when driving a car with automatic transmission. When the light turns green, quickly remove your foot from the brake and put it on the accelerator. If you are fast enough, you do not need to use the parking brake. Same thing when driving a car with manual transmission.

BTW Wil Mees comments are correct-just to add a bit more: Never call San Francisco "Frisco or San Fran" lol it is like nails on a chalk board to those of us who live here. We call it "the City" or "SF" if you must. If parking on a hill part was correct: wheels away from curb up a hill and towards curb down a hill. If you don't do that expect a ticket. People in the city are decent but park 6 inches slightly blocking their driveway and you will get your car towed. That part about the umbrella is not true. Except in the winter (late October to mid April) However, DRESS IN LAYERS!!!!!!!!! when you visit. =) The mornings in the city start out gloomy and the fog rolls out of most of SF by 11am (except like the Aves). When the fog rolls back in around 4pm the winds pick up and it gets cool. So shorts and flip flops are never a good idea unless you like it cold or live in the East Bay. San Franciscans are tolerant, helpful and fun people. All people are welcome =) Peace!

Turn wheels, engage parking break, then put car in park. Yup... that's definitely the right order...

1) Don't go into the worst parts of the Tenderloin unless you're packing heat or in a big group. BTW - the worst part happens to be the bit closest to the Bart station around Powell and Union Sqr. 2) Don't give money to panhandlers. 3) Don't engage in conversation with random creeps on the street - they will try - believe me. 4) Even if it's 60 degrees in midtown, take a jacket if you go west of Van Ness, it might be 40 in the Sunset or Richmond. 5) Don't go to a music event in Golden Gate Park and make friends with random hippy meth tweekers. A girl from Canada did that and lost her life.

It's not really mist. It's Foggy San Francisco. Just bring a hoodie and you'll be fine. We've had a drought for many years now. Rain is rare and typically just check the forecast before you're here and it's fine. Yes it's cold here especially at night. We have the winds as we are by the coastline. It can get warm sometimes in the day. Can't go wrong with layers. Just don't expect to wear shorts for the entire day and not freeze your bum off unless you're used to wearing it all the time in the cold.

Julia L Ha! I once saw a young European tourist on the F-Market around dusk in August. Poor kid was wearing linen shorts and a T-shirt, had no jacket or sweater. The fog had come over Twin Peaks and the wind was up. The poor kid was wretched, shivering... it was funny and sad at the same time.

Ha ha! No ones uses umbrellas in San Francisco! The high winds here, destroy them all. You'll sometimes see broken umbrellas lying on the streets or sidewalks....abandoned by those few people who actually tried to use one.
