100% accurate. I’ll be sending this video to first-timers. One more thing I would say is: wear comfortable shoes since you’ll likely be walking a lot. And don’t wear sandals unless you’re going to the beach. There might be something suspect on the sidewalks you wouldn’t want to step on.

My biggest tip as someone who has lived here for about a year is to stay at either the Intercontinental or the Fairmont (depending on your price range). Depending on your family's vacation budget, Intercontinental is relatively inexpensive for a city hotel (around $100 a night) and Fairmont is the more luxury option (around $400-500 to start). Both are atop Nob Hill and have incredible views of the bay and great access to Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf, Russian Hill (where the famous crooked street is), and many other attractions tourists are looking for. A lot of hotels are downtown and while the Union Square area is generally fine, it's homogenous with other big cities like New York so I don't really see why anyone would come to San Francisco and want to hang out there. As far as homelessness, like Haley said, most of it is saturated in the Tenderloin so definitely avoid if you're not used to walking around big cities like New York and LA that have similar problems. For the most part, you will not encounter anything like this in areas away from Market Street/downtown. The greatest tip I can give to tourists who love architecture is to just walk through the residential areas. Places like Russian Hill, North Beach, Pac Heights all have architecture to drool over and it's such an amazing walking tour.

Local Tip: If a cable car ride is on your to-do list. Don't bother waiting in line, the California St. cable car line will give you the experience. But, if you really want the bay views the Powell/Bay St. line offer, make your onboarding spot Fisherman's Wharf - the same views with less of a wait.

The ferry building is also a nice place for locals. Inside have many shops and restaurants. And there's also the moraga steps in sunset and there's also a small area full of food vendors and mini games in mission bay about one or two blocks away from chase center. Tourists can also have picnics at dolores park since during summer and fall they have the best weathers.

My favorite part of the city is the Inner Sunset. There are lots of great restaurants around 9th and Irving, and the Botanical Garden is a pleasant place to spend the day. Other beautiful places in Golden Gate Park are the Conservatory of Flowers and the Dahlia garden next to it. The best Chinese restaurants are in the Sunset and Richmond districts, not in Chinatown.

Good job, I think it would be helpful to add a description or map of where the general cultural and eating areas are relative to one another like North Beach (Italian), Chinatown, Japantown, Top of the Hill SF/Daly City (Filipino), Mission (Mexican, Latino) and parts of the Tenderloin (Vietnamese, East Asian). Often times, one can find affordable meals in “hole in the wall” local eateries in those areas.

As a fellow native of SF, all those things that visitors love to look at or do are things you start to take for granted. I use to work in Marin and had to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge everyday. Stuck in traffic and paying toll fees. Driving through the Presidio to try and avoid traffic which rarely worked. I also use to work at Pier 39 at a cookie shop during my high school days so that’s a place I haven’t been to in 15 years. I’ve never been to Alcatraz either.

You did a good job! I realize why you have to caveat the Tenderloin the way you did. I go through it on foot every day, worked in it for thirty years. I see the kaleidoscope of humanity in full effect (the heartbreaking and the soul-lifting both) and I know where to see it’s own brand of beauty…but outsiders usually aren’t used to the density and intensity of the issues in this neighborhood, so I just tell them to skip it. We get tons of visitors who want to explore SF, and I usually send them on their Day One to the Ferry Building. Some go from there to the Wharf on the F line. Some take a ferry. Sone catch the cable car on California and have a blast without waiting in the terribly long lines by Powell Street. Some just linger there and shop. If my guests are up for it, though, a sure-fire winner of a day is to get from the Ferry Building to the Levi Strauss Park and then walk up the Filbert Steps. They all come back raving about the gardens, the views, the old architecture, the wild parrots…and they usually drop down the other side and go into North Beach and Chinatown. I tell them about the coffee, the Italian pastry shops, the alleys of Chinatown. They usually cover them all. They get back home exhausted when the day is done but they are in rapture, with a book they bought at City Lights, and a bag of cannoli, focaccia or those fortune cookies from the tiny factory on Ross Alley.

First time on your channel. As a native born and raised San Franciscan, your depiction of the City is very accurate. Yes, native San Franciscans don't call it "Frisco" nor "San Fran". We are the "City" or "SF". For the most part, I don't drive in the City anymore. Not even to stop for a meal because of the horrific volume of car break ins. It really is terrible. I would literally meet a family member or friend OUT of the City to get free and better parking and not have to deal with the car break in crimes. I would advise tourist not to put yourself as a target by hanging cameras over your neck and such. I don't even bring a purse around anymore. I don't wear any jewelry anymore either. Sad that we have to adapt to certain ways because of the high crime issues that the City has evolved into. Unofficially, there are FOUR Chinatowns. The oldest in North America and official one is at Stockton, Grant, Jackson, etc. streets. Then you have Clement street in the Richmond district. Then you also have Irving Street in the Sunset district as well as Noriega Street. These three other unofficial Chinatowns are more for local shopping (meat markets, produce, houseware type of shops) although there are great restaurants and boba tea type of shops. The SF transportation system is very cheap and efficient. It'll definitely get you to all areas of the City. If you need to go somewhere like the outskirts of the City or to other surrounding cities, I can see why you may need a car, otherwise it's unnecessary. I wouldn't rent a car. Parking is difficult and you have to worry about the break ins. Just bus it or take an Uber. San Francisco is definitely a baseball city and we LOVE our San Francisco Giants. Try to catch a game at Oracle Park. It's a beautiful park.

As I often tell people who insist on calling the City by that horrid name, Frisco is in Texas.

It's funny bc back in middle/high school, people called it Frisco... also including in many local hip hop music. But this was in the 90s.

Awesome! I’m thinking about going solo on my birthday in two weeks. I was afraid at first to travel so far and alone but I’m pretty sure I’m going to do it. Looking at a 9 hour tour now with a few companies. I know to stay away from Tenderloin and just heard of Lands Ending today and so want to see this!

@@listentolisa5611 Aw, good luck and have fun! I was afraid to travel solo my first time too but after my first time I truly fell in love with just being alone LOL! My first time was also in the city and it’s honestly amazing to go alone because if you get bored of one spot you just go to the next! If you get the chance you should go to Twin Peaks, such a lovely view of the whole city!!

I lived in the Bay Area for a decade. Here’s my tip. Drive west across the Bay Bridge, skip downtown, but go to the Palace of Fine Arts, then Chrissy Field beach. Then go North across the Golden Gate Bridge. Exit immediately and go to the Marin Headlands NP. Next come back through the tunnel Eastbound to Sausalito. If you have an extra day, do a walk around Angel Island and then watch the sunset from Mt. Tamalpais. I would not waste even 30 min in the heart of downtown SF. Not worth the risk of your car windows being smashed.

Yes, as a native San Francisco, it can get freezing cold in July! Your toes will freeze if you wear open toe sandals. No joke!
