Not sure if there's already a video on this but you should do one with tips to make hot weather run more tolerable.

I struggle with the other due to reynauds syndrome and needing to wear contact lenses in the rain. I can run in really high heats, but I agree, some weather suggestions would be good.

I second that. Especially for racing 10k+ distance. Easy running and short distances i feel to be less effected by the heat.

I’m 63 and just started running - I run 5k 3 x per week - I love it, doing my first park run in a few months 🤞

Well done, I wish you the best of luck on your journey. A year ago I found this channel and started running. Back then I couldn't run for more than a couple of seconds, but two weeks ago I finished my first half-marathon. Running is a very cool journey. Hope you enjoy your 5k - I got very emotional the first time I ran a 5 k back in December, tears and stuff 😅

I would suggest doing Parkruns sooner, you don't have to run there, you can walk or walk/run. You will have the nice Parkrun vibe earlier, for you to enjoy! Good luck.

Don't put off Parkrun. It was the single biggest influence on my fitness journey and the encouragement you get from participating in parkrun is huge. If you can cover the 5km then rock up and give it a go. My first few times were over an hour (2019) these days my average time is around 25mins. If you don't think you are ready to give it a crack, why not volunteer as a marshal or barcode scanner? You get the benefit of the vibe without the pressure! Good luck 😊

I was 121kg when i started running 3 years ago, im now at 114kg and i can testify that losing weight definitely helps. I went from walking to intermittentent jogging, to now 10km in 1hr 15mins. Keep in mind my focus is more resistance training aka heavy lifting. Ive noticed my zone 2 runs and HIIT sprints have also improved my resistance training, and vice versa. I would add the caveat that in encouraging people to get out and run, to not ignore the reality that weight does matter when your hoping to improve, which probably goes without saying 😂
@sarahhokanson5391 Жыл бұрын
Omg, I have never heard a running channel address the issue of weight as beautifully as you guys have here. I got into triathlon with a history of an eating disorder, and wow, I just feel so seen. ❤ “Instrument not ornament” is going on my wall, for sure.

For #2, the best thing that I have found for me, for core training, is kettlebell and heavy club training. They move in axis that other things just don't. And they are SO functional to movements that we do in everyday life. I will never not do these forever.

I use the scale before and after a run to gauge how much hydration was lost. So I can better hydrate after the run. And get a better sense of how I should have hydrated during the run. I would say ditch the scale if fixated on weight loss though.

More recent research actually points to endocannabinoids (not endorphins) as a main contributor to runner's high! Great video - love the ditching the scales discussion.

How about some guests that are masters runners and their tips for continuing to run as you age? Just turned 60 and would like to keep doing it with as little risk to injury as I can! Enjoying your channel!

Unfortunately the menstrual cycle really influences my running. Learned it again the hard way last weekend when I ran a half marathon two days before my period and it was a disaster. I was so weak and barely finished. I’ve only been running for a little over a year and I haven’t found a solution yet, but any run longer that a few km a few days before my period is a real struggle 😟 Any suggestions how to fix it? Not running for two weeks each month is not an option.
@sarahwalker5478 Жыл бұрын
That isn't fun☹️ I don't have a solution sorry but maybe something that may help- have you read the newer research they're doing on how our period cycles affect our exercising, and ways to adjust training for this? I don't have any links off the top of my head but googling it will bring it up. Like Mary was talking about- but more in depth break down. Basically each week of our cycle brings different hormones, and some weeks we will have better energy for new or harder training, and then I think it is the week before periods, there's far less energy for to the hormone shift. So the articles I've been reading suggest tracking your period cycle each week, and the week you feel most lacking energy, look for a differing exercise to do that's not as hard, or do less volume that week. There's professional female athletes implementing this method to their training. Maybe that might help to look at? I've not found out super helpful yet but I live in hope😅 Good luck, hope you find something!

That was a great input. I’m a 50+ new runner and had several injuries already. Can you share your strengthening activities and how often do you do it in a week? Or do you dedicate a day for strengthening? How many days in a week do you run?

Hot weather long distance running: My respect for you guys running in Thailand´s heat just went up a lot. Did a HM yesterday at "only" 26-28°C and the heart rate after ~1h went up for 10+ beats compared to normally at the same pace.

Thank you for addressing hr zones… best way to know what your zones are is to do a v02 max test where they are measuring what you inhale, exhale and are taking frequent blood samples to determine lactose levels. In the U.K., universities will often do them for a small fee..

Here's an important one I don't think most runners know: our sweat comes from our blood. As you sweat, and don't replace it, your blood volume, and hence aerobic capacity, is reduced. That's why hydration is key to performance.

Funny thing about rest and recovery is for it in America right now or economies pretty bad things are really expensive and most people are working two jobs. Most of the people are I kind of talk with and deal with working to sometimes even Morton jobs but they still want to run to still want to work out and I just tell people do the best you can rest when you can as much as you can and that’s really all week you can do because I still even believe with out a lot of recovery you’re still better exercising than not exercising love your videos great points

One thing I've learned the hard way: if you live and run in a sunny climate, your chances of getting skin cancers such as carcinomas and melanomas materially increase. They can scar terribly when they're cut out. So, always apply sunscreen (at least 20 minutes before you head out) and remember to wear a cap or visor. Ben & Mary it breaks my heart when I see you running regularly without head protection, and the sun is beating down on your faces, the most susceptible area 😢. Finally, get a full-body mole and skin check at least every 12 months. You won't regret it.
@JossBailey-v5c Жыл бұрын
Learnt this from my grandparents who were elite cyclists in the 50s. They have so many skin cancers removed and treated so regularly and they always went out without in those days.

I run when it's dark.. save myself from overheating and from sunburn
@aquariol Жыл бұрын
We know they get up early to run but in sunny countries that's a 7 am sun 😞 it is still soft but you can't run for hours, i always wear sunscreen, long sleeves and an umbrella to cover from the sun on muy regular day because i walk a lot on streets but then found out i was low on vitamin D so now i take supplements. I don't like running in long sleeves and long tights but yep always wear sunscreen and a cap and run before or after the sun is strong and check your vitamin D levels or we may develop osteoporosis too
@syncmaster173 Жыл бұрын
True, sun protection is no joke! After my sister had skin cancer removed from her forehead I was told “we’re hat people now”. As a bonus caps keep the sweat and hair out of the eyes, I rarely run without one anymore even on cloudy or cool days

our bodies are absolutely supercomputers. the programming determines the outcome for sure. how you program your metabolism determines how your body uses energy. i’m just thinking that if you have a carb centered metabolism, you might perform better with using carbs for energy…and if you have a fat burning metabolism, you may use fat better for energy…? i know of elite ultra marathoners who have a carb heavy “diet” & ones who have a fat centered “diet”. 🤷🏻♀️

Blood flow changes can also mess with wrist based HRMs. According to both my Garmin and 2 models of Fitbits, my HR drops to 80 when I'm doing hill sprints... I bought a chest HRM

@@ThisMessyHappy especially if you tend towards health anxiety, as your HR suddenly dropping during intense exercise isn't a great thing to ask Dr Google 😅 It took me 3 watches, lots of emails to Fitbit (who were clueless), a trip to the Drs just to be safe, and finally asking the right questions to work out that blood was just being diverted to my legs. It seems so obvious now!
