I’m Norwegian and would never spend money on most of these things either, the exception is backpack. We are using backpacks a lot, especially in nature. I do agree they are not very safe to use in a large city or in crowded places, unless they have a pocket you can’t access unless you take the backpack off. Other things I would never spend money on is tattoos and piercings. (Earlobes excepted)

Backpacks are better than shoulder bags if you have a lot of stuff, or a computer. It's not good for your body to have one side weighted more than the other. And, backpacks give you free hands. It's not any less safe than a purse. You really have to be out of it to not to tell if someone is touching your bag.

I'm a Swiss woman and also use a backpack and flask for nature activity. I also use the refillable flask at work to avoid spilling water on my desk 😮 and to have water with me in general when I know I will otherwise not have easy access to it ~ it depends on the activity. The rest, yes, 100% agreement and I can say I've not spent money on any of those other things 😊 my last fancy dress outfit was Octoberfest in Munich 2004 😂

I agree with all of these, and I would add two things. (1) Fake tan. It doesn’t fool anyone. I saw a woman recently whose face, arms and legs were different colours - beech, teak and walnut, I would say. She looked like a marquetry coffee table! (2) Fast fashion. Not only for the obvious reasons like poor treatment of workers, pollution and poor quality garments, but it goes out of fashion so quickly and somehow, last year’s look seems worse on an older lady than on a teenager. It is not just mutton dressed as lamb, it is more like mutton trying to dress as lamb and not quite succeeding - rather undignified.

This video really made me smile, and it’s a yes to those things from me. Another to add to the list are expensive lotions and potions that promise my face and body will travel back in time and be wrinkle free, will make me look younger etc. They won’t. I think I had to be a woman of a certain age to accept this because although I knew it, I was always lured by the advertising. I recently had an example of this. I bought a bag of specialty beans at a coffee shop near my office, it makes delicious pour over coffee. I normally make coffee at home and bring in a thermos of it, but one day last week I skipped making coffee. I went to that same coffee shop, they had the same beans as a batch brew, so I bought a cup - it tasted lifeless and flat compared to my own brew. Good coffee equipment is a "buy once in your lifetime" purchase.

I have a small simple crossbody (Baggalini) that I can also belt around my waist. That’s where my phone, keys and other essentials go when I need to carry a backpack. I can keep it close to my body and everything I need is in reach. I’ve had upper back pain from carrying anything heavy in a crossbody so it’s important that I have the waist option. I sometimes wear it at my waist to define my waist as I’d do with a belt. The important thing is that it’s black, basic and doesn’t look like the belt bags that hikers and tourists sometimes wear. I also keep my backpacks simple in grey or black and always in waterproof material. I love the Prada backpacks but would never carry one because I don’t like logos that advertise you’re carrying an expensive bag.

I agree with most of these things, except the flasks. I keep mine filled at all times (and wash it out every few days, of course). Unless I am having people over for dinner, it's the only thing I drink water out of. This allows me to use less dishes, and means that I always have water ready to grab when I am leaving the house. I drink sooo much more water now than I ever used to out of glasses. Just a personal preference that has helped me stay healthier.

Marie-Anne, I take only one exception to your list and that is the shaved ice/snow cone machine. Here in Hawaii shave ice (no “d”) is a traditional treat, and I do have my own hand cranked shaver. Fun video. Thanks! I agree with all the things you listed. Since moving to a city in Poland, 9 years ago, I use large cross body bags, because I am often out for many hours and need room to keep gloves, hat, and perhaps an extra layer of clothing like a sweater or down vest during winter. I contemplated buying a backpack. But it seemed like I would put my shoulders out of joint putting it on and taking it off. I like that I can swing my cross body bag to the front of my body and access it whenever needed. Plus it is much safer while riding the trams and buses. Also, bags just look better on a woman my age of 67. I loved your point about how our clothes fit to know whether or not we have gained weight. I have not owned a scale for years. I keep clothing for years. So I know by how they fit if I have gained weight or not. But it kind of drives medical personnel nuts that I do not know how much I weigh when they need that information.😁 Happily, here in Poland the doctors do not weigh you like they do in the US.

I appreciate very much the videos, which I came upon only about 3 weeks ago and have been catching up with several at a time. Have been sharing them and everyone so far finds them immensely valuable and the host a delightful, wise, and loving presence in our lives. I think sometimes the guidelines of less is more, keep it simple, and so on are a bit rigidly defined. For decades I have made simple earrings just by dropping beads of different colors, shapes, and textures in various sequences on a straight metal rod. They are not gimmicky, can enhance an outfit subtly, or serve as an accent in balance with other elements. Many craftspeople make beautiful pieces with similar qualities. Why be confined to studs and disparage other kinds. Marie-Anne herself work a striking pair of dangling black earrings in one video poster, and they looked great. Also, why can't an elegant or fluid or jaunty pattern in one garment be considered a valuable part of a simple, sleek, striking outfit? A study of the principles of design as codified by the ancient Greeks, who all studied in Alexandria with Egyptian scholars, cites one key factor in an appealing design to be its balance of unifying (similar--to avoid busyness, overstimulation) with varying (dissimilar--to avoid the boredom of too easily-digested patterns) features. Those choices can be nearly endless....

Love her humor and honesty - couldn't agree with her more on everything she mentioned - I would add to that list use butter (instead of margarine - better taste, healthier), wearing atheleisure wear everywhere (ugh!), long hair on older women who have thinning hair (give it up and get a good cut), badly kept feet in open toe shoes or sandals, gum (who needs to look like a cow?), smoking ANYTHING (looks cheap), tatoos (looks CHEAP), skirts that are too short (no one has great knees), clothes that are so tight you see the rolls of fat....

I would agree, apart from the butter. Would love to eat it, but diagnosed lactose intolerant at hospital about 20 years ago, so margarine it is, although the better olive oil sort, or even a dash of olive oil itself, as many Italians use it.

I totally agree with you on all these things. Lately, I've been "shopping my closet". The pandemic gave me a chance to go through my closet and fall in love again with my clothes and shoes; some which I had forgotten about. Thinking of new ways to wear and accessorize a dress, a skirt, a blouse, a pair of trousers, etc. made appreciate them all over again. I did splurge on a couple things over the pandemic, but in general, going through my closet made me realize that investing in and taking care of good quality pieces is well worth the initial purchase price which has been conveniently forgotten 😂.

Marie! I love my Fitbit watch. It isn't that expensive (approx $100 more or less) and it helps keeps me trim. By the time I notice my clothes don't fit, it would be too late...the damage is done. My Fitbit helps me keep aware of how much I have moved that day (or not) and it helps keep me trim!😃

I completely agree with all these things. I feel the same about extentions, nails eyelashes. All of these are, as you say, damaging. I also have thin hair and my hair style is very similar to yours. I keep my hair short and I don't dye it. It's salt and pepper. It's my age and so what. Hair dye damages hair...especially thin hair like mine. My French grandmother used to get her hair set in rollers weekly by my aunt. Going to a salon is a treat I save for when my hair needs a trim. I have friends who are addicted to their long nails. To me they are impractical and a nuisance when using my computer keyboard. I think keeping it simple and elegant is definitely the way to go. Thank you for the excellent advice.

As always I enjoyed your comments, what a great list. May I add one thing, a beauty regime with 75 steps, many of which are unnessecary and the length of time they take actually is a disincentive. Far better to invest in good cleansers and moisturisers and use them religously every day, if you are adequately hydrated and eat well, this is all you should need. I would make one exception to your list I use a plain black back pack to take to work, I have a disabilty which means one of my hand is used for a crutch, and so the back pack is a Godsend, as always, rules are a good idea, but you need to bend them to your own circumstances. Thank you for the interesting Video.

Then travel, have adventures and learn new things! The funny thing is, on a tour of France, we visited a winery, the dashing British young tour guide explaining all the finer points, like only natural cork etc. Next room is the bottling, almost fell on the floor laughing, wine was going into plastic bags then boxes! Go for natural and have fun!

As a former athlete, I used a simple Cassio watch to time my runs. I have never seen the need for a fancy FitBit or Watch. I do use a backpack in order to keep my hands free when using public transportation. Having hands free is especially important as I now rely on a cane. I have a nice dressy one, as well one for carrying gym clothes and my swimsuit to the YMCA. I have a Subscription for Wine Delivery. I found Repour from Grommet to keep the bottle fresh, as I drink a single glass at a time. The wines come from different parts of the world including California, France, and Australia. BTW I also have baby fine hair.

Great video, advice. I've done my own manicures and pedicures since I was 18. When I was in my 20's, I spent a lot on expensive face cream. (The fragrance and packaging were very appealing.) Then I asked my dermatologist what he thought was best for my very dry skin. His answer, "Pond's". Fast forward, many decades, I still use it. I also took his advice for bath soap, white "Dove". For my age, I have few wrinkles. Some of that is hereditary but these two products get credit, too.

I can be tempted to spend money on things that I do not actually need. Sometimes I do not even use them once I have them. What a waste! 😔 Your channel has taught me that yes, practicality, frugality, and beauty can all be achieved harmoniously. 😉 I completely agree - any beauty routine that damages your natural hair/nails/eyelashes/etc. is probably not worth it. A safer alternative is likely to exist. 👍 I would like to add to this list by mentioning that outfits for one-time occasions can often be borrowed, rented, or thrifted.

Another great video Marie. I agree with you on everything except the backpack. The weight of the pack is evenly spread out across your body and shoulders. The strongest muscles in your body are the back & abdominal muscles which support the pack. Whereas a shoulder or crossbody cause the shoulder it’s on to roll forward and down which stretches the muscles in the upper back and neck. The leads to weak muscles, poor posture, backache, neck pain and headaches.

I agree with all of them! I did get the fake nails put on twice in my life for a special occasion & regretted it later, as they were damaging to my nails & took months to recover! Luckily I have very good natural nails & sometimes can have a perfect 10 for 2 or 3 months at a time, & then they will start one or 2 to break, then I have to at least shorten the rest a bit, so I will not be perfect for a few weeks till they grow...oh well! There is plenty about me that isn't perfect, but I work with what I have...lol!
