Marie-Anne I do agree with you. I have a recent memory of my mother ( Jacky Kennedy fan from the UK) and my mother inlaw ( a tailoress and German) I was behind them they looked so elegant both in there 80s mum in black trousers and polo neck sweater with a silk scarf that was my grandmothers and a camel coat and mum in law in navy blue coat, trousers and a cream silk blouse and a silk scarf that she screen printed herself. Yes they still turned heads.

OMG!! I find your tip about knowing your body type to be soooo important. I'm pretty sure I'm an inverted triangle (and I'm busty) and find certain styles unflattering on me, like puffy sleeves, boat neck sweaters and skinny jeans. I wear a lot of of dark, solid colour v-neck tops with wide leg or bootcut pants and A-line skirts. While I try to keep an open mind about trying new things, overall I find knowing what works for my body shape helps cut down on trying on a ton of clothes and to forgo certain styles/trends because they're not going to work. I find it interesting when sales staff tell me complicated ways to wear a certain item to accommodate my body shape! I mean, why bother when there are better choices? One again, Marie-Anne, another helpful video!

I have only just taken the plunge with made to measure garments. I spent my entire spring budget on just 6 pieces and I'm really excited about it! I have an hourglass figure (my waist is 2 sizes smaller than my bust and my hips) and also a long torso. Ready made clothing (even higher quality) tends to look either frumpy or salacious on me and tailoring tends to take away from some of the length so that I feel I am constantly tugging things to make them longer... I've been working with a smaller, wardrobe for 5 years now (I discovered Jennifer Scott's 10 item wardrobe and I haven't looked back) but this is the most I've ever spent in a season since then and I'm really excited to wear these items for years to come. ♡

I knew many of the French principles but I had no idea I was as a rectangle until I found you. Besides this I’m very tall (6,3) and very slim (thanks goodness!) so I stay away from skinny clothes, high waisted pants, and monochromatic clothes from top to bottom. Those need something to break the endless view effect like a coat, jacket, blazer on a different color or tone so I don’t look like a long snake! But with every mistake we make there’s a lesson we learn and therefore our knowledge and sense of style grows every day. Sharing it right away! Thanks to heaven we have you Marie-Anne!

Another great video Marie Anne. My mother always followed the quality over quantity rule. Sadly we could never wear each other's clothes since she was an inverted triangwe and I have an hourglass figure. I too must avoid skinny jeans since they are like tourniquets on my thighs yearning to breathe free. In an earlier video you mentioned the importance of buying a good bra. For anyone over a D cup, you can never compromise on this. No outfit will look good with saggy droopy boobs. Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, and Audrey Hepburn were not busty. We need some hourglass fashion icons.

Recently found your channel and am binge watching. I've also begun sewing during the covid, one of the biggest reasons is due to the quality over quantity. I dislike 'trends' and have always loved classics, but can never find items in the right cut, or colour, or fit (apple) so I thought, why don't I learn to sew my own clothes and make what I want. Thanks to KZbin, thats exactly what i'm doing now. Now you and a couple of other french ladies are helping me achieve that classic style I've always admired. Keep up the great content!

Thank you. These are good reminders. I am an apple shape, albeit a fit smaller version of one. I kind of look like a rectangle shape but I categorize myself as an apple because if I gain weight it tends to go to my midsection. I know the style rules for apple shape but I find it harder to hide a larger midsection. I love wearing fit and flare type dresses and skirts that are fitted at the waist and flare out to create ah hourglass silhouette. I also love monochromatic colors in my outfits.

Yes!! This message resonates with my entire fashion philosophy. Simple, elegant lines. Dressing for my colouring, body shape. Having a curated wardrobe with classic items of exceptional quality. These items are the hardest working pieces in my wardrobe. I have long been a fan of Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn. They epitomised French elegance. My eye is always drawn to styles they emulated and were characterised by. I will say the exception would be a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. When I first tried one on, I was blown away at what it did to my body. I now have over 20 DVF items (dresses, tops, shirts, jumpers). She is a fashion genius. What she did was revolutionise dressing. Thanks for sharing all your wisdom with us. I hope you are safe and well.

I used to work at a resale clothing store. So many women would pass by the wrap dresses, because they certainly don't look like much on the hanger. I used to convince our customers to try one on. Voila! What a difference! A wrap dress that looks sad & limp on the hanger can be gorgeous on a woman's body. That's a huge style tip/rule: try things on! Specially if you're at the beginning of creating a new wardrobe. Try it on and see. It's free to try it on & you're already in the dressing room, so take another few minutes and try on something a little unexpected. You may be pleasantly surprised. Even if you have a favorite brand, try it on. Sizes can vary within the same brand. Even shoes nowadays. I have been buying a size 7.5 in American shoes for years, but recently a 7.5 was too big, in two different brands. My feet haven't shrunk. But sizing is so inconsistent nowadays, trying everything on is a must.

Marie-Anne, you are a blessing in these days that we need to stay home, thank you from my heart! All your ideas are great, and what is the most important very easy to apply once you keep in mind the rules, you start thinking diffrent. Today we have so many things to choose, which is good and bad in the same time. Good because you have many options, and bad because some of us loose themselves in so many options. Three colours rule, yes, I learned it from my aunt, she was a very chic lady in communist Romania, which in that time was difficult. I always admired her, wanted to be like her. She teach me some of the rules that you are also speaking here. Now I value her more, even though she is not with me any more. I am grateful that I can watch you and we must all be grateful for the opportunity that we have to know each other and also ourselves more in this time, good luck and all the best!

I am an hour glass petite shape. I have a small waist so I like to wear clothes that are fitted at the waist. If I wear a standout piece everything else is neutral. I always buy the best quality I can afford. Sometimes an item last until I am very tired of it. Simple elegance is perfect for everyone. I think all of these style rules are of importance to looking nice. I do wish people in America would be concerned with at the very least looking decent. When I am in public a lady or man ( rarely} who is dressed nice truly stands out.I always notice how people are dressed. I loves styling beautiful clothes and your ideas are timeless.

Marie-Anne Lecoeur Hi Marie-Anne, I have just done my body shape and came out as a ‘Pear’ which I have been all my life. I was going to sort my wardrobe out but got busy doing other things. I desperately want to change my whole wardrobe including clothes, shoes , accessories etc as my style seems to have got lost somewhere. In the past I always dressed in elegant and classy clothes but when I met my husband he sort of changed me and since he died 11years ago I have really let myself go as I don’t go out much. I am now thinking of doing a style journal as I now know how I want to look and this will make me feel more like the old Judith. I am also looking to change my skin care, makeup and hair style . This maybe a lot to do but needs to be done now. Love your KZbin channel, and love all your advice 💕

Marie-Anne, I love all of your conseils. The one that struck me in this video is the "not more than three colours" in one outfit. You are 100% spot on. Wow. You're so elegant, feminine and chic, but you're strong and tough at the same time. I don't know how to explain it. Thank you, so much for your advice. Marie-Anne, do you have any advice on perfume?

What makes your videos very easy for me to follow is that our colouring is not dissimilar and I love she same colours as you do, our ages are very similar and like you, I am a rectangle!!! So all your advice makes sense to me. I have always always avoided boxy blazers and sought out the ones with a nipped in waist. My favourite one is a navy with a delicate pinstripe that is about 20 years old and I still wear it regularly!

Thank you so much for these tips! So helpful. I am "hourglass" I think and a little busty with a small waist. I feel uncomfortable accentuating that and want to wear big clothes even though they are not flattering lol. I like to wear solid colors rather than prints unless it is a print on a skirt or pants. Solid on top and in a bright color. Not all print lol.

Hi Marie-Anne. Another fantastic video. I was really shocked with the picture before the video started. I had to look several times. Your on the left and the right. WOW!!!!! What a difference. You are truly a beautiful and elegant woman. The picture on the left....your wearing a skirt....if that is you.....what a difference. Take care and stay safe🌹x

You are so lovely and so smart! I appreciate your wisdom. I love your books but it's very helpful to watch your channel, too. Classic, long lasting clothes are an investment, so I'm thankful for your tips. When I make a purchase, it will be one I can enjoy (and hopefully look nice in) for a long time! Great job!

Hi Mary÷Anne. Yes, I've been.noticing audrey's style rules in old movies and it's TRUE about simplicity and 3 colors or less. I am something between.hourflass and pear, about a size 4 us . So I will try your course s to see which I am more. My young daughter always tells me I look.best in straight leg vs. Skinny Jean's. Thank you for this video you are great.

Another great video, Marie, although I have more pressing things on my mind at present, during UK C-19 lockdown, than fashion and style. Survival, and keeping healthy, for instance! As it is, I have been following these style rules (a) dress for body shape (b) dress in right colours (c) better quality over quantity for years now. The only rule I have learned most recently, from you too, is the three colour rule. I'm surprised that you didn't mention (b) though, in this video (although you have stressed it in other videos).. No point in wearing three colours if they are the wrong three colours, surely! You are a Winter, so you have a lot of choice. For Summers, like me, I have to be careful that i don't wear the kind of colour palette that looks good on you. I'm a pastels kind of gal. I actually like very good in busy small flowery prints too. So I tend to wear these. My first ever style book was by a female fashion Journalist called Leslie Field. She wrote a book in the 1970s, which I bought in the 1980s, called 'Dress Like a Million.' I still have it on my shelf to this day.

Thanks for explaining your style. I find as a "summer" that I can throw any two or three colors together, and they blend like magic. My downfall is how I love jean skirts which don't flatter my heavy legs. I'll try jean dresses (prairie) and jumpers next! Not very chic, however!

I am pear shaped and I completely agree that skinny jeans look terrible on my body type, and especially on a mature (overripe?) pear. It's so frustrating because these days they are pretty well the only jeans that are being made to fit "curvy" women, other than the frumpy kind of jeans that are very voluminous in the legs. I have to get my jeans tailored.

My mother taught me these things when I was a child. She was not French, but very smart and stylish. Her style was understated elegance. She was a teenager during WW11. There were many shortages and people learned to make the most of what they had. She bought only a few but very well made classic pieces...and would wear one piece of jewelry...plus earrings. She kept her favorite clothes from the '40's and made some of them onto school clothes when we were little. So, she taught me to be very efficient and economical with fabrics and clothing. Even now, when I can no longer wear a garment, I start thinking of what else I can turn it into.... I love listening to you. You make perfect sense and of course, sound like how my mother did. Love to you and thank you for posting.

Until a recent weight loss I was an apple shape putting on the weight around the middle , Now I'm back to hour glass but don't like anything clingy to the top half of the body . I love solid colour tailored clothes . Few prints can entice me at all but I sometimes admire them on others . I believe your rules boil down to - wear your clothes , don't let the clothes wear you .
