That ending concept of Darkside Rey and Luke training Finn actually seems like a logical idea since they pushed for him to be force sensitive and would be a interesting thing seeing two apprentices in parallel scenes of training dark/ light and the ending duel between Luke and Palpatine (who yes should be just Ian Mcdiamid without make up as clone concept from old canon EU Disney think people!) would be an ultimate final confrontation of two masters but also would allow Luke’s story arc from 456 not to fall to pieces like it has because of these new movies. They literally destroyed his story and the chosen one story of Anakin so they ruin both the prequels and original by existing. This is why the Thrawn trilogy would have been better and Imagine if instead of Pryce we had the actor play Thrawn. Omg that would be amazing. Thanks for this video!

Adding onto the Kylo seeing Anakin instead of Han idea, there's actually a perfect scene just like it in the EU, with someone who is also a Skywalker descendent. Cade Skywalker is on the verge of the dark side and encounters Darth Vader years after his death, and is defeated by him in a duel. Vader then removes his helmet and shows his burns, then warns Cade about the consequences of the dark side, revealing it to be a vision. Not only would this scene have a massive shock factor (imagine hearing Darth Vader's breathing behind Kylo), but it would give more ample reason for Kylo to reject the dark side. Plus it would make Anakin's sacrifice seem less undermined, as it would be his influence on Kylo that ultimately defeats the Emperor once again.

Back when everyone was speculating on what could happen in Episode VIII, I wanted Kylo Ren to visit Vader’s castle on Mustafar (the TROS novel doesn’t count; also don’t terraform Mustafar). That would be the perfect setting for Kylo Ren to see a vision of Darth Vader, lose a duel with him (explanation being the residual traces through the Force of Darth Vader in the castle), and be utterly horrified at the burned face of his grandfather.

determinator 94 Or just imagine what could have been: Instead of standing on the platform jutting out of the ocean, Ben makes his way back to the throne room (idk pretend his ride is coming to get him closer to the throne room or something). As he makes his way through it, it cuts to either a close up of his face from the side or the front, and then we hear a faint audio of the classic breathing (it doesn’t even have to sound that much like it, maybe the pitch is a little off, like it’s wind rushing through a hole in the room, but the sound created by it can sound a bit like the breathing). Ben stops. He looks tense. The environment of the room changes. It all of a sudden gets darker, kind of like the lighting for the climactic duel in ROTJ. The sound of the air flowing through the room gets more recognizable, until it gets to the point where it becomes the breathing we all know and love to fear. The camera spins around Ben, mirroring him as he searches for the source of the breathing. He’s really tense now; not terrified, but just tense, like he’s gearing up for another fight, but the look on his face should emphasize that he knows that there’s a good chance that it won’t end well for him. The breathing is a bit louder now, but not so loud that it’s deafening. Camera pans around Ben for a bit more before slowing down and stopping. Ben is starting to display a faint trace of fear on his face. Then he hears the voice: “It’s time you learned the truth...” Feel free to continue from here 😁

IDK if anyone here is going to make the excuse “we didn’t need a backstory for the empire in the original trilogy” or “the emperor didn’t need a backstory in the original trilogy” my answer is this: The Sequel Trilogy is NOT the Original Trilogy and doesn’t have the benefit of establishing an entirely new universe. The Sequel Trilogy exists in a world where the OT and Prequels exist and it should have accommodated both.

The difference is that we have seen the mighty Empire destroyed - so it is imperative that the rise of the even mightier First Order (in the intervening time) is explained. You can meet a new and largely unexplained mightily adversarial force in the beginning of a saga, but not twice.

Tom Felton - To an extent, yes, absolutely. You can criticise the OT, but it simply isn’t as big of a deal as having won the day three films in, and then having a new even mightier adversary than it’s predecessor establishing itself with no explanation.
@Obi-Wan_Kenobi4 жыл бұрын
@@misterknite The OT existed in a vacuum. It could have set any status quo it wanted to without justification because it came first, the right of the first movie. So saying there's an evil Empire that rose of power because it destroyed the Jedi is good enough. But the sequels do not exist in a vacuum, they exist in a world with 6 Star Wars films that have flashed out the history and politics of the galaxy. One of the best things of the prequels is how they create a geopolitical backdrop that logically leads into the OT's. The prequels raised the bar of world building and part of the reason why the sequels failed is because they reduced all that complexity and make the universe seem illogical by comparison. If Palpatine needed to orchestrate a war to rise to power, how did the First Order just suddenly take over? At the end of the day, it's all about the established history. OT had no established history so the world could be anything, you don't need a backstory. But the sequels do because you're already aquatinted with the universe. It's like if I randomly take a walk and travel to a new area. In this area, I see a gigantic mountain. I don't need an explanation for this mountain, it's clearly right there. And it's entirely reasonable that this mountain exists as I have never been to this area before. And let's say I become very accustomed to this mountain after this. I spend the next 30 years exploring it, understanding it, even learning about the science and history that created it. Then I leave for 10 years and one day, I come back and I suddenly see the mountain is gone! And it's been replaced with a canyon! See now I need an explanation! I need to know what happened to my mountain because it was there before and now it's not! Became of my familiarity, I need an explanation and if no one gives me a satisfactory explanation of how it suddenly disappeared and got replaced with a canyon I'd be very confused. That's the problem with the sequels. The removed the complexity of the galaxy established with the OT and prequels. We never got an explanation and are very confused whereas we did not need an explanation of the OT world as it was our introduction.

The Suspect is back! Always good to see him upload. I’m telling you the biggest mistake they made was ironically bringing Palpatine into it. By doing that and bending over backwards to try and fit Rey to him even though we early had an effective answer in The Last Jedi that fit the themes of the saga and actually created whole new possibilities, they ended up hurting themselves and causing unforeseen story consequences. Also why did they give J.J. Abrams only SIX MONTHS of pre-production?! TFA and TLJ had a year to two years of pre-production which gives them time to prep and fine-tune the story. But TROS got fucked by getting only six months. Not sure who in the comments will agree but as an original and sequel trilogy fan that’s my take.

@NatReyes9614 жыл бұрын
Rob H Eh Trevorrow’s CONCEPT ART looked good but I’m more mixed on script. Some ideas are great but others feel like expanded universe fanfiction similar to the Palpatine reveal. That apparently was an early draft and each draft kept getting worse and worse. I think they should have just Star Trek: Beyond’d Leia and have her die between movies and her cameo is her as a Force Ghost. And after seeing the horrible screenplay writing on display in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and his uncredited rewrites of The Book of Henry (the author and original screenwriter meant for it to be a dark comedy but Trevorrow, for some reason, rewrote it to be a whimsical drama), I don’t think Trevorrow’s vision would have been any less flawed or divisive. Evidently, and just a heartwarming meta thing, according to Dave Filoni Rian Johnson was his mentor in learning how to direct live-action and was supportive of him and Jon Favreau as well as sometimes running into Filoni in the halls and the two would have long conversations about lore and storytelling. Nice behind the scenes tidbit.

Just rearrange the details and tune out some things, and Duel of the Fates could’ve been the best possible ending to the saga you could ask for. To be completely, it is absolutely impossible to make a good ending to a saga with such different tone and feels, with such a rich lore and so many characters people hold onto religiously. This isn’t like Marvel or Harry Potter where they’re based on source material that people can go back to. This is Star Wars, and the movies have been known to be more widely recognized than the Legends stories, no matter how good they might’ve been. Making a final chapter that truly resolved everything well is downright HARD, so I can’t blame Abrams or Trevorrow or Disney for not being able to handle the workload. I’m just glad it’s over, so now the series is free to go to new places and have brand new stories and characters to delve into. Let’s go out there and explore this galaxy far far away.

I really enjoyed this video, mostly because for once it felt like a video discussing the sequel trilogy that WASN'T just coming from a place of "I absolutely hate these films". Most videos are overly negative, but I feel like (even though you did criticise aspects of these films fairly), it still came from a place of enjoyment of these films, at least in certain aspects. And, though it's a video focused on the shortcomings of the films, and what you would have edited, it didn't feel depressingly hateful towards the films. If I could suggest one change that I feel most people don't mention, it's to do with Rey's "your parents are nobody" story arc. She had to be a force for change and good in this series, and learn that her lineage wasn't important to who she was. It's a good message (even if it's kind of edited to "You can be good IN SPITE of your lineage" in Rise of Skywalker) but I felt it was a really misplaced message. Why? Because of Finn. Finn was brainwashed into joining the First Order from a young age, and is implied to be a child soldier. The only family he knows is the other storm troopers, and the friends he makes in the resistance. If ANYONE should have had the "your lineage doesn't matter, you can still be a hero" arc, it's Finn. And though I like the sequel trilogy well enough (even RoS), I think Finn had a lot of missed potential, and hearing that John Boyega was completely shafted during the films' production is really hard to hear. Anyways, great video man, it's nice to see a video that can be critical of this trilogy while still feeling hopeful.

I liked Rey's Nobody parent story because it fit the concept of balance in the force. Snoke was basically saying that he always knew the Force would create an opposite to Kylo. Now follow me here: Palpatine influenced the Force to create Anakin, so the Skywalker bloodline should NOT exist. The Force balances that by essentially picking a "nobody" and making them Kylo's balance. And having Snoke basically say this shows that Snoke has the wisdom and understanding of how the Force really works, and is trying to mnipulate that understanding. Of course they frelled that all up in the next one.

In response to your "Luke's Jedi Academy", I think a good way to get an idea of what he did would be to look at Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. You play as Jaden Corr, a new Jedi Padawan who has done what most consider impossible, build a lightsaber without any prior Jedi training. The game takes place in the early days of Lukes academy, Luke is still relatively young, no beard or grey hair in sight. Just a thought~ It's one of my favourite games. Rey should have been like "I'm all the Jedi" and then ALL the Force ghosts show behind her, building from far behind her at first, but the closer they come, they become more familiar. You see Ahsoka, Kitt Fisto and all the other jedi from Clone Wars. Then Qui Gonn, & Mace Windu, Obi Wan and Yoda. And finally, flanking Rey are Luke and Anakin. The final heart wrench, Luke helps Rey steady the lightsaber that belonged to him. Then another hand steadies Leia's saber. Pan up and see Leia. Ben would have to be conscious in this scene, and he'd lock eyes with his mother.

I think the biggest issue with the trilogy was a lack of planning. Sure, the original trilogy wasn't planned out, but George had three years to make each film and plan things out between films. However, Disney rushed these movies into production - as soon as one movie released, the next film started filming so they could meet Disney's release dates, leaving little time to plan between films. As someone who liked the first two films in the trilogy (especially The Last Jedi), I feel that the trilogy needed a bit more planning and things set in motion. I appreciate Rian Johnson trying to take the trilogy in new directions, but at the same time, I understand how it rubbed people the wrong way, and it would have been better if Rian was given a stand alone film. As for Phasma - her costume started out as concept art for Kylo Ren, and the character was made around that and then she was shoehorned into the story.

I was very annoyed that they made Yoda the ghost the appeared to Luke in the Last Jedi instead of me. Yoda was not Luke's first mentor I was, and if they're going to have a teacher sit wonderments with Luke and talk about failure you don't send Yoda, you sent me because I both have the greatest connection with Luke and I've been though the exact same thing he has. I empathize with Luke way more here than Yoda does. And I'm also more important to Star Wars overall than Yoda is. I am one of only 4 characters who appeared in all 6 original films and I was never even included seen in the sequels once? That's not right at all.

Correct. If they wanted a Palpatine clone story they should have had it so that was the focus of the Trilogy. A clone of Palpatine raised by Imperial Loyalists, perhaps Thrawn, is presented to the galaxy as his 'son'. He is not the literal consciousness of Palpatine. Or Force Sensitive. He is just a Machiavellian politician doing seemingly good acts to get the Galaxy to embrace a neo Empire. You can even make him morally grey rather than straight up evil.

You hit the nail on the head with the whole matter of the Death Stars. I mean, the Death Star, the Death Star 2, the Starkiller Base, which may as well be called the Death Star Forge, and then the Death Star Destroyers. How many of these planet-busting laser weapons did these filmmakers think were needed? Yeah, the villains are a tyrannical military, they need a big weapon as a symbol of power to induce fear, but couldn't they mix it up? Aside from the Star Forge that you mentioned in this video, there's another idea I found out about while doing some Star Wars research. Have you ever heard of the now non-canon Dark Empire comics, Suspect? In them, the Galactic Empire, under the order of a reborn Palpatine, has built these superweapons that are kind of like the Star Forge, only these things eat planets, like Unicron; they're called the World Devastators. Using powerful tractor beams, they would rip a planet apart at close-range, harvest their resources and convert them into both fuel for themselves and parts to automatically build any tools of war the Empire requires, including starships, fighters, droids and, with enough time, more World Devastators. That's another thing: there were *several* of these monstrous machines. Something like that would be a great challenge for the heroes, combining the threat of a bunch of giant, armored, planet-killing weapons even more deadly than the Death Star with rapidly growing enemy fleets. Just have Palpatine oversee the construction of the World Devastators in a top secret shipyard, unleash them on the galaxy when they're least expected, and without making his presence or involvement known, and then finally unveil the fleet they've built from the worlds they've ended. Even though the Legends continuity has been disregarded as officially published fanfiction by Disney, they and Lucasfilm still drew some inspiration from it (or unintentionally copied it, I dunno) for the sequel trilogy. Why not also revive the concept of this type of superweapon? By the way, since this would be a relevant place to make this recommendation, I suggest you check out Phoenix Studios. He's made videos describing how he'd rewrite the Star Wars sequels, Michael Bay's Transformers and a few other films, as well as video essays on story tropes. And now I go on with my life while my long comment on this video just sits here, ignored for all eternity because I took 4 months to think of anything to type about it.

Like, instead of Rey turning to the Dark Side in TLJ, have her turn during her fight with Palpatine, and she and Ben fight to the death all the while the war to end all wars is happening right above them. Or they could, well, simply use Duel of the Fates.

While I don't think episode 8 is the best episode in all of the star wars films, that shall always been V, its the best out of the new sequels (at least for me). Ots the only ony that doesn't rely so heavily of previous films like 7 does or cave-in and retcon a whole bunch of plot points plus have a lot of plot holes like 9. Granted there are things that could be change but overall Episode 8 is fine as is. Note I think the biggest problems these films had is they didn't really plan ahead each film and just hoped for the best, thinking lightning would strike twice as the OG Star wars wasn't a planned trilogy either. Also Disney gave in way to easily to fan backlash. Also I would have gone with Ryan as the main architect of the trilogy than JJ. JJ is good for reigniting film series that are old but not really planning ahead. To big of an obsession on the mystery box and not really thinking what's in the box, which is great to get something going but not the ending of it.

Aight, self-admitted Star Wars geek here, so I'll just be typing up a response to some of the points argued here for the sake of it, pausing / continuing as I go. So when this ends up as a wall of text, my apologies. 4:10 "Who would even join such an organisation?" You do remember the part where Finn says he was abducted from his family and indoctrinated into the First Order as a child, right? This is explicitly said in the first film. As for number 6, saying Luke's sacrifice isn't appropriate...? Dude, c'mon. Remember Yoda's exact words from Empire strikes back. "Adventure? Excitement? Hmph, a Jedi craves not these things. A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense. Never to attack." Luke's sacrifice here 100% embodies that moral. He saves the entire Resistance base without harming a single person. He doesn't need a big bombastic exciting X-Wing run, he only needs the Force, nothing else. I'm on the same page as you with the "Seeya round, kid" line though. From concept art and script leaks, it's very well known Luke's ghost was meant to play a bigger role in 9, specifically as a 'haunting' figure for Kylo. Which would've fit with that dialogue. But obviously that all got chucked out the window... Regarding Finn vs. Rando McStormtrooper, yes, that was *supposed* to be Phasma's moment. But scheduling conflicts with Game of Thrones meant she couldn't do it. Now why they didn't opt for a stunt actor is... beyond me, because, guys, she's got a helmet on, I don't think anyone will know the difference. But yeah, apparently this was supposed to be a fight with her at some point before production troubles. RE: Anakin's conception? Yeah, your "theory" is exactly what happened in Old Canon. Plagueis was experimenting in how to attain immortality, and created life via the Force. Problem was, he didn't know where or what that life was. Just that it... existed, and might one day show up. Which leads to act 3 of the book, the point where the story overlaps with the events of The Phantom Menace. And we get this amazing 'scene we never saw'. Palpatine's talking to Count Dooku (who at this point is still a Jedi, though not on good terms with them, as this is shortly before he leaves the order) and Dooku mentions in passing "Oh my old student Qui-Gon Jinn just returned from the outer rim today, made a real fuss in the Council chambers", etc, and mentions Anakin and the whole "Chosen One" thing. Palpatine immediately realises what's just happened, and rushes to tell Plagueis. Plagueis says "We can't let this kid fall into the hands of the Jedi, we are FUCKED if they get to him before we do" (well, not literally, but you get what I'm going for) and the two then have to sneakily try and get Anakin away from the Jedi, but of course this doesn't work, duh, we've seen the movie, but it made for a really interesting bit of behind-the-scenes context with the benefit of hindsight. Palpatine ultimately ends up killing Plagueis during the events of the movie. Literally, that whole 'killed him in his sleep' scene happens concurrently with the duel between Obi-Wan and Maul. And with Maul gone and Anakin's true power revealed, Palpatine begins the long game of swaying Anakin to the dark side by setting himself up as a father figure for the boy. Oookay, regarding "Clonepatine", um... no, just no to that. Palpatine was on the Death Star for good reason, he was the bait. To lure the Rebel fleet into a big final showdown, but springing the trap that (A) The Death Star is battle ready, and (B) the Imperial Fleet was waiting for them and boxing them in. Why put himself in danger like this? Luke flat out says it. "Your overconfidence is your weakness". Palpatine saw NO danger. He knew about the Endor team going after the Shield Generator. He figured his Stormtroopers would overwhelm them. And any other day, they would've. The Rebel Commandos were outnumbered by a ridiculous amount, plus walkers and speeders and such. So, begrudgingly, yes, the Ewoks were the game-changer.... which I suppose has a sort of poetic justice to it. That the natives of yet another world the Empire stomped across to create their weapons of galatic conquest ended up being the deciding factor in undoing all that. In the 90's, a Comic series called "Dark Empire" was published, a comic they pulled heavily from for this movie. In the comics, we get this exact reveal. That Palpatine was always a clone (or... Clones) who has been pulling the strings behind the scenes for CENTURIES, and using cloning and sprit-transfer techniques to continually die and revive himself in a new body. Star Wars author Timothy Zahn, the 'father' of the expanded universe, best known for penning Admiral Thrawn and the 'Thrawn Trilogy' which was long considered the true sequels to the original saga, decried this. He said it 'undermines Vader's sacrifice" and makes the climax of Return of the Jedi far less important. And I feel the same would apply here. Don't get me wrong, Palpatine cheating death to begin with undermines Vader's sacrifice, but this would be a step too far IMO. RE: Lando's backup. Once again, something the original draft of Ep. 9 handled better. The non-Rey subplot consisted of Finn, Rose and a few other supporting characters infiltrating the Jedi Temple on a First Order occupied Coruscant and using the Jedi distress beacon to transmit a galaxy wide call to arms, with Leia pleading her case to the people. (As well as a Stormtrooper revolution against the First Order lead by Finn, and Walker battles in the Coruscant streets. I am pained that this was not used....)

I would have took out the FO and changed the main threat to a ancient force that has existed outside of the Galaxy. I would NOT have kept Luke in exile stuck on the island planet, i would have had Rey come along and help restore his faith in the force, and then he comes out of that exile and joins everyone else, including a reunion with Leia and Han. I would have made Snoke either a ancient Sith or someone who has dabbled in the darkside, experimented with it and done something "un-natural", resulting in him being immensely powerful in the darkside but not a natural force sensitive, causing his physical body to wither. Around the 36:00 That last part of Luke training Finn for 9, we could have had Finn be unfinished with his training. Maybe then have Finn talking to Dark Rey and be like "please don't make have to destroy you" Rey turns off one side of the lightsaber and says "Fine, I'll go easy on you". Rey still destroys Finn Later Rey wants to be the most powerful so she fights Kylo for power the first time, Kylo is scared and loses the fight. Luke and Kylo confront each other and either fight or talk to team up and fight Dark Rey. Have Palpatine be powerful and scary like in clone wars fighting Savage and Maul. But have it Rey vs Luke and Kylo Then Luke fights Emperor as he walks in and Ben fights Rey with maybe Finn if he's alive. One or both die, she helps Palpatine. Luke beats Rey. Palpatine then uses her lightsaber and Luke grabs Finn's blue lightsaber. They fight with 2 lightsabers in an epic showdown we never got to see in 6. And have an epic battle with music from episode 3. I wish there was something dark, exciting, and epic to have seen and give pay off to everyone. Even if 9 ends in a sad tragic way

I will also say though, I do think the sequels will have a similar renaissance like the prequels recently did. Yes they're flawed, but imo there's enough good shit there to last a while and I do think today's generation will continue to love it for year down the line.

Wow! An actual well made video detailing where these movies fell and how they could have been improved, not some some toxic ass fan calling them the worst movies ever made, saying “they killed the franchise” or calling anyone who liked them complete idiots. Nicely done suspect!

In hindsight (even though I was one of those fucks who complained that The Last Jedi was the worst film of all time) I think that TLJ was the best of the sequels because RJ actually tried to do something with the series instead of becoming a puppet on strings for Disney's whims. I would actually want to see an actual RJ cut because I have a theory that the up and down tone of TLJ is Disney being an helicopter parent. I think he's one of the only movies (not counting Mando) that hints at criticizing the Jedi and the "Light Side" of the battle. I think that if RJ had complete creative control over TLJ then it could have been a master piece. But alas... Disney...
@Minecraftlover734 жыл бұрын
Honestly that point about criticizing the "light side" was one of the reason I liked it even with its flaws. I wish we got to see more of it and have it end with the force in actual balance.
@pentelegomenon11754 жыл бұрын
Did they try to do something with the series? As far as I can recall, everything at the end of the movie was the same as it was in the beginning. Even Luke mostly just went from being one kind of non-character to another.
@austinjohnsen44304 жыл бұрын
pentelegomenon And then people will say that Empire did the exact same thing. Except in Empire there were a lot of things to get excited about going into the next movie. Rescuing Han, finding out if Vader was telling the truth about being Luke’s father and Luke possibly becoming an official Jedi.

Agree RJ’s film was the best of the three, tho I think for it - and the trilogy - to be totally good - he would have needed complete narrative control over more than the middle act.
@faemaiden50904 жыл бұрын
@@nathans5347 Exactly! I really don't think that JJ was the best choice to lead these films. His whole "mystery box" thing is great for a TV show because you can have more foreshadowing, clues, and lead up to it. "Mystery box" in film is a lot more like a really important question, then an answer, just not as good. They should have gone with someone like RJ, most of the Star Wars fandom are grown up now, the majority of people seeing the film are going to be adults, it could have really been interesting if the Star Wars films made you actually think about morality...

ok I have an idea for a future star wars movie / possible tv show ill sum it up in a couple points 1. the main character should be a descendent of Obi-Wan and THEY SHOULD KNOW THAT {for those of you questioning how he could have descendants. Look too Duchess Satine, maybe she had a child with Obi-Wan in secret much like Padme & Anakin} 2. Make the villains a group that we know but wouldn't expect to be the villains. For example, the night sisters. It would definitely be interesting to learn more about them and how they grew in power while being out of sight of the empire and the first order. Perhaps finally venturing into the uncharted parts of the galaxy. 3. Don't give the villains a super weapon, just have them be naturally extremely powerful and then let us see just how powerful they are throughout the course of the film leading up to the final fight. 4. Have both sides of the force be represented in the main protagonists. I've already addressed the light side protagonist {The Obi-Wan descendant}. Maybe for the dark side protagonist that would travel and learn from the light side protagonist, we could have a descendant of a lesser known Sith lord that would only be recognized by someone interested in star wars outside of the movies. Someone from the old republic like Darth Revan or even Darth Malgus perhaps. {Or if ya wanna get really interesting, make them a descendant of the eternal empire's royal family}

Especially if it can eventually spin-off and lead upto Luke Skywalker and his Jedi School. Like say if the Mando hands Baby Yoda over to Ahsoka who then takes the child to Luke.

@@samisikdar5417 This is what im hoping for my fingers are crossed, cause if they dont and actually make the connect, the showrunners are going to struggle cause then they have to "dance around" the Sequels, because of the fact Mando, Katan, Ahsoka and Grogu are not around in the time of the Sequels.
