The one thing I'll say in defense about the scene with Luke and Darth Vader on the bridge is that if they wanted to fight each other, they would have fought each other. I actually think that's one of the best moments in the movie. They gave the two characters a chance to actually breathe. I also think it was important for the Ark of Darth Vader that he didn't want the fight luke. You can feel that torment as he tries to suppress the good side creeping back in when faced with his son who is purposefully speaking calmly and gently to him, man to man. I think it's a good scene. It makes the fight scene later a bit more powerful because you know Vader doesn't want to do it.

People complaining about bobas death baffle me. He was never really established to be some amazing cool guy at this point. He was just another random bounty hunter that people latched on to cause they thought his armour was cool. Since then we've got more stuff from the EU and shit. At the time boba was a nothing character. George himself has said he was just another minion. His death was kinda comical, so? Star wars fans really like 2 movies and think they love the franchise. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but nitpicks like bobas death are frustrating.
@jaketerpening32842 жыл бұрын
Okay, he was the one who tracked Han to Bespin. He was clearly not just a random character who had cool armor, he had skills above the other bounty hunters. He was also the only one who slowed Luke down at all on his rampage in the same movie. Top it all off with Star Wars fans being really into every minor character, and it's not surprising people were upset about his comedic death.
@maliziosoeperverso16972 жыл бұрын
After what they did to him in TBOBF, I'd be content with Boba's death in ROTJ
@patricknaughton66362 жыл бұрын
People like to say it's because of the armor but the bigger draw with boba fett is that he's the only henchman that threatens the main characters. He tracks the falcon down, captures han solo, and would've probably blasted luke in the hallway if he wasn't trying to lead him to vader (who up to that point personally killed no one that was actually fighting back). He's clearly more dangerous than the stormtroopers, and his death in jedi makes fans upset because any generic goon could have taken his place and it would've changed nothing. A good example of how he should've worked is karl in die hard (spoilers if you haven't seen die hard, which you should). He acts differently than the rest of the goons, has a bigger gun, and nearly kills mcclane many times while the other goons get shot to bits. It takes a long brawl scene where he's thashing bruce willis for most of it to ALMOST kill him, and even then he outlives the rest of the bad guys and is killed by another character to resolve his character arc.

Extras - Finding 100+ people that are 7ft tall (Chewbacca's height approx.) is not that easy either. I personally think wookiees would have been better, but personally I don't tend to mind a whole lot, considering there are meant to be thousands of them and they did capture the main cast at some point and they don't just serve as eye candy considering we see quite a few of them die.

Leia using the grenade was to show Jabba that, not only is her motivation for collecting a bounty, but to also solidify herself as a legitimate character of the underworld, by using a fierce negotiating tactic. Of COURSE if the grenade is set off, no one wins, but that's not the point. The point is to sacrifice a few teammates in order for everyone to escape together. It's impossible to rescue only one, so the plan was to fully infiltrate their criminal enterprise and rely on R2 being able to fire out Luke's lightsaber to him at the right time. Of course, this requires a lot of things to line up perfectly for Luke (which I'm not a fan of), but that is the point of the entire setup. It makes sense, but you have to exit your current state as a "KZbin critic" and think from different perspectives. Also, not telling C3PO about the plan was a GOOD thing. C3PO is a blabbermouth. He can't keep secrets. He'd most likely give away the plan, which is why it was the safer risk to put him in that situation with R2 without knowing anything.
@nerdock47474 ай бұрын
Lando had already infiltrated for weeks at that point lmao, at pretty much any point he could have unfrozen Han when nobody was there and walked out. The entire plan is absolutely ass-backwards stupid and NONE of it makes any sense. Keep in mind that Jabba and his people had to sit silently in the dark for, what, 7 hours? waiting for Leia to show up to free solo - of which they had no idea she was Leia or that her objective was to release Han or when she would do it. There's your different perspective lol, it's an incredibly idiotic scene. I appreciate that you're trying to apologize for it and find the good in it, but the bad/dumb/unbelievable FAR outweighs any good in it.

I was 11 when it came out (like many others, I see!). I remember loving the experience, feeling like it was going by too quickly, wanting to savor every moment. But as we waited outside for my parents to pick us up and the crowd surrounding me was euphoric and talking about how cool it was, I felt for the first time in my life a distinct gap between what I was feeling and what they were expressing. It was disappointment, but it would take a long time for me to acknowledge it. Meanwhile, I bought the toys, books, tapes, and posters. There was enough to love about Return of the Jedi to forget that initial feeling and just keep on being a Star Wars fan. Then it came. I was in college when the February 1997 issue of Sci-Fi Universe magazine hit the stands. In big bold letters, the cover read, "FIFTY REASONS WHY WE HATE RETURN OF THE JEDI (and love Star Wars...). Reading it was cathartic. It was clever, genuine, and funny writing, obviously posited by people who really loved the franchise. My buddy and I would take turns reading it aloud to each other like a performance, it was so good. There was a side bar about all the ways Jedi was amazing, too. You hit a lot of the points covered in the essay, and I appreciated the deeper look and personal perspectives brought with this video. Clear, funny, informative, and - again - with an obvious love of Star Wars. Fun Asides: When the Special Edition came out, it was a thrill to see the ANH in the theater again. I relished watching the younger audience that was talking and joking through Empire get completely sucked into it and shut the F up. By the time Han got frozen, the entire theater was silent and learning into the screen, dumbfounded by how good it was. The same full audience laughed a lot through Return of the Jedi. The biggest unintentional laugh came when Vader said, "My son is with them. I have FELT him." I hadn't realized how suggestive that line was, but boy did the audience roar form it.

I remember when I finally had the Special Edition, I went to watch "Jedi" and the picture shrank down to a thin line on the screen. Horrors. Then at some point I discovered the Star Wars radio dramas, which were pretty good.

I kinda felt that Leia had a lot of time to really think about how much Han had met to her. When she’s finally able embrace him again she let her self be vulnerable. Considering she must’ve spent the last few years thinking Han may be gone forever it would explain her character change. Han Solo just wasn’t given much to do in the film. His one thing that he does is blow up a control station. In the first two films he was such a vital character and although Luke was the main hero, he couldn’t have done it without Han.

@lepopcornnaisseur546 Жыл бұрын
Bro, the ground and space force we see in the movie is basically the entire Rebellion. We see their fleet floating in space in ESB and can deduce they have a sizeable ground force based on the battle of Hoth. They gambled everything on destroying the Death Star II which adds a bit of excitement to the plot.
@amazingsoyuz8735 ай бұрын
@@lepopcornnaisseur546 Also worth noting that the majority of the imperial fleet was not in the system at the time. This was intentional to draw the Rebels in to Palpatine's trap, they would have been too suspicious if there was a sizeable imperial presence in the system. This is literally mentioned in the film. So yeah, the Empire was WAY more powerful than the Rebels, Palpatine was just a fool who got overconfident and too trusting of vague visions - the Rebels were never supposed to be able to get the shield generator down and would have easily lost if that were the case.

I always thought Luke's plan did fail: he really did give up the droids -- maybe he planned on rescuing them after bargaining with Jabba. So then he sent Leia in, and she got captured. So then he went in to fix stuff. I didn't get that he had planned on the skiff fight scene, only that he and his pals knew generally what they'd need to do. I never thought his plan was what we saw. Instead, we saw a bunch of plans failing. First plan was to bargain with Jabba.
@Suddmoney3 жыл бұрын
That was my understanding as well. The plan was to bargain with Jabba. If that failed, send Leia and Chewie to infiltrate and try to sneak Han out. If THAT failed, Luke would go in himself. But he knew if that didn’t work, he needed R2 and Lando to be there (which is why Lando was undercover as one of Jabba’s guards) to help fight them out.
@johnnygyro22953 жыл бұрын
In hindsight, the plan could've been streamlined as such: Step 1: Have Lando infiltrate Jabba's guards to confirm Han is at the palace. Step 2: Have Leia, disguised as a bounty hunter, "capture" Chewbacca and C-3PO. The latter would serve as a translator for Leia. Step 3: After Jabba's party, Leia would thaw Han from the carbonite, Lando get Chewie from his cell and they all leave. Step 4: On the off chance step 3 fails, which it does, Luke comes himself with R2 and demands Jabba surrenders. When he refuses then you get the fight at Jabba's Palace with Luke distracting everyone by fighting the Rancor. R2 breaks Leia's chains, she kills Jabba and everyone bails since she also activates the Thermal Detonator to blow up the palace. Side notes: This would, for better or worse, cut the fight over the Sarlacc Pit and allow Boba to join the fight on Endor on the Empire's side, giving Han and the others more to do.
@7opher6193 жыл бұрын
You neglect the fact that he sent in the droids with his lightsaber stowed away in R2. That means he would have lost his lightsaber if Jaba had accepted them as offerings and would have had to retrieve it or give it up.
@matthewparker92763 жыл бұрын
I think his plan was to send in as many infiltrators as possible, and while he was negotiating (I.e. distracting) jabba, Leia would sneak Han out, and luke and co would follow them, violently if need be. Leia unfreezing han at night and the battle of the skiff then being improvisations to recover from the plan not working out.

i think the main problem of this is that is a safe movie, with Empire they actually tried do something different and more ambitious, because there was no way the sequel to the Star wars was gonna flop so there was no risk, its the type of sequel that doesn't make the first movie again, its more mature, less predictable, amazing direction, there is no big battle at the end and stuff like that, and Jedi isn't any of that, its a step back, its even less mature than New hope, its kinda disappointing watching it with Empire lenses, George Lucas didn't learn ansolutely nothing with Empire, he just made the sequel to the first movie he made, because yea, this is a George Lucas movie in a nutshell.

The Emperor “foreseeing” things (or his failure to do so) is one of the themes of the film. Yoda in ESB preaches the folly of looking away to the future. @kirby72945 жыл бұрын
Multiverse I think that Yoda’s opinion has changed because of those times. He’s developed and learned from his experience. There was a comic not too long ago about how Yoda blamed himself for being to caught in the future to focus on the present and the evil approaching. Which causes him to exile himself like he does. AND I love that the final confrontation with the Emperor and Darth Vader is so psicological... In short, if you take Endor out and replace with... basically anything... this movie would be just as good as the other two to me. Slower paced, sure, but great all the same.

And also how when Luke gets his lightsaber and just says fuck jedi technique and swings it a baseball bat and destroys everybody. The Jedi, who symbolize hope, peace, order, abd Justice, died. The light in the dark galaxy was snuffed out. On top of John Williams brilliant score, it was probably the most emotional moment in star wars history. One last thing. Yoda disappeared. The last time we saw that, the guy who disappeared came back as a ghost. Everyone knew that Yoda would become one too. The Jedi in order 66 didn't. That was the sad truth of moment. Order 66 was far more emotional than Yoda's "death"

Alright man so I watched the video and idk if you’ll ever see this comment but here are some things. 1. Han has been in carbonite and you kind of just answered your own question. He’s been away for awhile and would rather be with Leia then anything. He’s not gonna risk being away from her when they love each other. 2. Han eventually would understand that Lando had zero choice on cloud city. Not only was Han an imperial but he knows how strong the empire is and what they’re capable of. 3. I’ve heard people talk about Han not having anything to do but he got his arc in ANH. He does the same thing in this movie that he does in ESB. Stay with and protect Leia. 4. I don’t think the movie is boring at all. 5. Luke’s plan to rescue Jabba is a bad plan but at this point he was being arrogant bc of the new Jedi things he learned. It’s a lesson he learns within this movie to not be, and to be more humble. Star Wars is full of bad plans, also in episode 4 and 5. 6. Boba Fett dies in an odd way but that kind of humor is all throughout Star Wars. Especially in 4 and 5. 7. Vader at this point is just looking for Luke. I don’t get what you mean by a more climactic meeting? They fight later in the movie. This is a phenomenal scene bc this shows the regret and sadness of Anakin Skywalker. Not only in his words but in his body language you can tell he’s conflicted. It’s a genius scene. 8. Saying the Death Star working is the only good reveal in the movie is ludicrous. Like you’re purposely ignoring stuff at that point. Vader saving Luke isn’t a good reveal? Anakin becoming a force ghost? 9. I do wish there was less of the Ewoks and the tone wasn’t as inconsistent. 10. I like your ideas for Rotj a lot though.

The funny thing is, I love this one. I saw it when I was like 10 and loved every bit of it. The scenes in Jabbas Palace, the cute teddys fighting for their planet/moon and the epic fight at the end where luke nearly breaks. I feel the opening of Return of the Jedi was successful, but I would make some changes to the rest of the film. I would change the plot from there to have Han and Leia follow a lead from Jabba’s Palace to Coruscant (kind of a WW2 French spy thriller vibe), and Han, Chewbacca, and Leia discover a method to use Spice routes to smuggle rebel troops past the Imperial fleet to storm the Imperial Palace. Blade Runner was released in 1982 so the effects were possible for Coruscant. Luke is now a symbol of hope for the galaxy, meaning he will bring the return of the jedi order and peace to the galaxy. The rebel troops inspire the Coruscantians to rise up (maybe there are Wookies that were inspired by Chewbacca, which helps turn the tide). Lando and a new character (maybe someone that infiltrated Jabba’s Palace with him so they have a rapport) would follow a similar path to the actual movie leading the space attack against the Imperial fleet, but the attack on the fleet is a smoke screen to distract the actual goal of sneaking in the ground troops to the surface; Lando could have subplot about convincing the rebel fleet on a suicide mission that functions as a distraction. Luke would similarly follow a similar path to the actual movie, but I would have had Luke be training Leia in the Force between movies (it’s clear in Empire Strikes Back that she can use The Force so why not have that training occur off screen or in an early scene…maybe Leia uses the Force during the Jabba mission). I would also not make Leia and Luke related; the scene where Luke snaps when Vader says “If you will not turn, maybe she will…” still works, especially if Leia is on the planet at the time. Luke would still confront the Emperor, but it would occur at the Imperial Palace. There would be additional tension because Luke falling to the Emperor’s side would snuff out the new hope that he has provided to the people of the galaxy. The rebels are successful with taking the palace and there is a celebration to the end of the civil war. Maybe Han dies so Harrison Ford can have his dream fulfilled. The end.

Actually, this is probably my favorite Star Wars movie. Yes, the beginning setup is awkward. And yes, the Ewoks are pretty terrible (although they're not without purpose, as I discuss below). But you have to look at it from the perspective of someone who was watching it in 1983 and didn't know how it was going to end. The whole excitement from it is that you know that final battle between Luke and Vader is coming. Return of the Jedi had a lot more setup to do because of Han being captured. I don't think that was handled particularly well, but I understand why Luke wouldn't want to fight Jabba in his lair. There's no element of surprise there. The Ewoks aren't that annoying once you understand the reason for them being there. This was 1983, not that far removed from the Vietnam War. The Ewok battle is in there to show an indigenous people fighting against a more technologically advanced force. Also, there's a reason Luke doesn't go in on Vader with his light saber blazing. He doesn't *want* to kill Vader. He wants to turn him (like Rey wanted to turn Kylo). In 1983, audiences went in not knowing if Luke was going to have to kill Vader. He was being told that he had to defeat Vader by Obi Wan and Yoda, but he is also afraid to fall to the dark side. It's this central conflict that fuels the movie. Luke whaling on Vader in the beginning is him starting to be tempted by the dark side, and he just barely pulls himself back. The movie does, obviously, have its flaws. But what keeps it from being boring is that you know that battle is coming at the end, and the danger increases the closer Luke gets to it.

I have to: Yes, Return of the Jedi might be the weakest of the three. But many of your points aren't thought through. Let me unpack this for you: Yes, Han Solo's role seemed pretty unnecassary, but that was because his role was originally cut and just later added. Apart from that I'd like to think that Luke, Leia, Lando and all the others changed so much in the year between V and VI, Han was just a bit thrown off by their sudden competence. Remember, they all grew in the meantime, he was frozen in carbonite. *Jabba's Palace:* It is actually a great scene, it ends Han's arc with him owing money to Jabba. And Luke's plan actually makes sense. He didn't tell C-3PO any details for the obvious reason that 3PO is a naive coward who would have spilled the beans by accident. That is made clear because R2, the more clever one of the two, was involved in the plan. He's got Luke's lightsaber. But no, Luke didn't plan out exactly everything. He didn't plan to fight the Rancor and then go to the Sarlacc pit. He gave R2 his lightsaber to make sure there is a plan B. When he nodds to Lando, that obviously is the plan B. Look at how serious and pumped Leia looks when Luke is on the plank. She knows shit is about to get real. *The Ewoks:* Yes, the original idea to have Wookies instead of Ewoks would have been cooler. But agaim, you underestimate Luke's character. He joined the group and travels to Endor. He senses Vader on the ship and gets this feeling that something is happening. He doesn't quite know what, he wonders wether he should have come or not. The speeder chase happens and they all end up at the Ewok village. And then, when they all sit around the fire and 3PO tells them, they have become part of the tribe and the Ewok's will help them there is one shot of Luke standing at the door and having this look that says "Ohhh, so that was the reason why I came here. Now I can leave and confront my father" and that is exactly what he does. *Vader meets Luke:* You might find it boring and off hoe they interact with each other after the confrontation on Bespin. But it is sooo subtle. The look they give each other for the first time. One can just imagine what is going on in their minds at that moment. They way Luke speaks is very reserved and serious. He pushes his own confidence and when Vader activates his lightsaber behind his back it is so unsettling. Both of them must have gone through that conversation hundrets of times. This moment means much more that you think *The space battle:* No idea how you can dislike that, it's awesome *The second Death Star:* Sure, one could argue that it is just a rehash to have a second Death Star. But think about it, it just makes sense. The impirial power depends on it. The impirial senate was given up in favour of a weapon of fear to "Keep the local systems in line". They needed that Death Star as an instrument to keep the galaxy under their control. It's a tool a fear. *The duel:* Again, you argue nothing much happens, the fight is short and not really action packed. But this is exactly the poinz, it's not about the duel itself, it's about what it means. In the end it is all about Luke winning and deciding to spare his father. The real conflict - Luke even says that - is the conflict within. He doesn't give into his hate, he spares his fathers life and decides to die instead of joining the Emperor. Return of the Jedi might not be the best of the trilogy but it got it where it counts, kid. You underastimate it very much.

Your whole counter argument is just re-narrating the movie. The Evoks scenes last much to long and are in fact BORING. Han character being cut and being readded later is not an excuse. The performance and dialogs were bad. Star Wars is a movie that tries to impress the viewers and the last fight with Vader was dull and lame as fuck. The reunion between Vader and Luke was rushed. This whole movie was an embarrassment to the franchise. Sometimes you gotta look past the nostalgia...
@thebeatleswin17 жыл бұрын
XXX1 XXX2 Man some people don't get star wars and critique it like they understand all the themes and meanings. First off your personal interest in the ewoks and their scenes is irrelevant, If you find them boring great, Not everyone does, And they do infact, Add a lot to the plot ( I will concede that it did feel like they pushed them a bit to far though and they became a slight toy commercial, But they did still add to the plot) Hans character being readded and ending his story are fine, I don't even get why it would be a problem that he's not a huge part of the movie, He wasn't meant to be and thats clear, It's lukes story now. The performances and dialog is bad, Ok this is a subjective point again, Your opinion on the acting is irrelevant, Most people found it to be fine. I'll ask what dialog or moments in the performances you found bad because i'm curious though And again the Luke and Vader fight is a bit subjective, But saying "it's lame" because their isn't much action? I'm sorry but you've completely missed the point, Star wars is not about light sabers, It's about the characters conflict and the lightsaber fights are ways of showing that conflict in a visual way. To say Return of the jedi is an embarrassment to star wars when we have movies like Rouge One and the entire prequel trilogy is absurd to me, I can't even understand that part of what your saying

@@IroquoisPliskin_ But Ewoks represented the little guy. In this case they represented the Viet Cong. A seemingly weaker force defeats a stronger force. But maybe you should take another look at the Ewoks. At first they wanted to eat Luke, Han, and Chewbacca. Then they helped the Rebels find the least guarded section of the shield generator. Next fight. Now during the fight they did something that was psychotic. They bludgeoned a group of Storm Troopers to death and were laughing while doing it. Later, they ate those same Storm Troopers. WHERE WERE THE BODIES TO THOSE HELMETS?! They were playing music at the end and one Ewok was using the helmets as a drum set. What happened to the bodies? The Ewoks were psychotic and they were the good guys.

Palpatin predicted his "death" because he had back up clones to "somehow return" for Rey to have another chance to kill him just to get sith of his granddaughter

I saw Return Of The Jedi when it came out . I was 6. I really loved it. Although when I saw Star Wars and then Empire Strikes back (Return OF The Jedi was the first Star Wars movie that I saw) I preffered those first 2 more. Still I really like that 1982-1985 movie feel. E.T.,Dark Crystal,Back To The Future, Goonies, Temple Of Doom, Ghostbusters, Starman, and others from that time...they are all very different films but they all have some sort of similar something about them that I really enjoy...maybe it was the mood of the time plus the filming technology. But I love Return Of The Jedi!

I like it for that reason as well, just like it though, does have a good atmosphere reminiscent of early 80's film making. But the film itself is far from perfect.

I think the beginning was multiple failed rescue attempts, first a bargain that fails, then Leia sneaking in and failing, then Luke making a last ditch effort to rescue everyone and failing, then finally then make the plan to break out

I also think it was part of the plan that the plans sucks, so they dont pose a big threat to Jabba. His palace was full of bounty hunters and guards, if they went full murder on the heroes,, some of em probably would have died.

During my formative years growing up in Asia, this movie came on tv, and even at 8 years old I fell asleep. To this date, ive never successfully sat through any star wars movie without falling asleep.

I liked ROTJ as a kid because Luke had a green lightsaber and green is my favorite color.

Jackson Rivers I was the opposite, I loved the blue light saber as a kid. Blue against red just seemed right. Even today a small part of me still hates the green light saber.
