I’ve lived in 13 towns and have been here for 31 years. I’m 72. This is my favorite town. The music and wineries are outstanding. There has been bad press because of Obama’The Great Divider’ and his irresponsible comments on the Michael Brown case. Remember: there are 345,000 people that live in the city. However, there are another nine hundred thousand that live around the city. When you live around the city, it’s the best. I travel a lot and am so proud of St. Louis.

The whole Metro area is considered around 2.8 million people so it is low key bigger than most know. I love the wineries and music also. I have really enjoyed the quality of life coming from the hustle and bustle of the West Coast. I consider STL the “gem” of the Midwest.

Grew up in Ballwin. Living west of I-170 would be mandatory if I moved back. Probably west of I-270. If you can afford it, Chesterfield would be my pick. The Illinois side is to be avoided although there are some nice small farm towns north of the city. Why anyone would want to live farther in (unless you are a surgeon at Barnes and can afford a gated enclave in CWE) is a mystery.

St. Louis is a great place to live for those who seek it out. If you don't like the rust belt or middle America culture you probably wont like it. I agree with the traffic and costs statements. You get a lot of life for your money. Living in a community where 80 to 90% of the people are one race is scarry to a lot of people from the west coast and southeast. I have so much to say about St Louis both good and bad. One ting for sure, ive always enjoyed my life there.

Most of the areas that are "underserved" would not be underserved if the people that live in those areas would not rob those businesses blind when they do open in those areas. Many times over the years, grocery stores, Wal Mart, department stores, shops are restaurants have tried to establish themselves in those areas. After all, lots of people with few options, it should be ideal for a business to open and thrive. They open and it isn't long before those in the area (not everyone, of course) are stealing everything that isn't nailed down. They use and sell drugs in the parking lot. Rob and assault any customers that might come in. Carjack anyone willing to frequent that business. Before long, the grocery store, Target, Walmart, etc. closes down. They are losing too much money or it is too dangerous for employees and customers. Then people whine and complain that they live in a food desert. That the nearest Walmart is 10 miles away. That is why these areas are "underserved." Stop stealing from these places and they would be happy to serve these areas.

St.Louis is a "Diamond in the Rough" They have all the infrastructure for everything.....I'm from Detroit and St.louis is Detroit 30 years ago....St.Louis just doesn't have a blue collar middle class and the big business investment like Detroit...and the politics & racism have made St.Louis & East St.Louis an Outlier in that part of the country.

@sburns242127 күн бұрын
St Louis and Detroit is a good comparison. The "city" for both sucks, but there are very nice areas surrounding both. Both have a feel of "this place was probably great 40-50 years ago". STL had a blue-collar work force back in the day, but suffered from offshoring manufacturing just as Detroit did. There was a big Chrysler auto plant for decades that is now demolished, and Boeing has concentrated defense rather than commercial aircraft in the area. When TWA was around, you could get anywhere in the world in one or two connections at most. Once that airline and the St Louis hub was gone, Lambert now is just another airport in flyover country.
@2000det27 күн бұрын
@sburns2421 .....The very first time I visited St.Louis flying into STL airport, I was flabbergasted, The infrastructure is already in place for any kind of industry to come in and do business.... Detroit was just like St.Louis 30 years ago...our whole downtown was blighted, the neighborhoods were neglected, The politicians were crooked, crime was out of control. Eventually we had a change in leadership, Detroit had to file bankruptcy, Big businesses came together with investors and they put together a plan to restore Downtown Detroit and the Neighborhoods with Grant Money and Loans to fix up everything and build new things for everyone's benefit. Metropolitan St.Louis has nowhere else to go but up....The People have to demand change, The Government has to get rid of the corruption, crime has to be brought under control and government/businesses have to step up to the plate and rebuild the downtown and spur redevelopment of the neighborhoods. "God Bless & Stay Positive", Brighter Days are Ahead.
@azcactus2008Ай бұрын
Why do you keep using the term "under served"? Those are the areas where people live like animals and shoplift the stores out of business. I was born in StL and it's embarrassing to see the steady decline of my home town.
@ThePumpin15 ай бұрын
The reasons for St. Louis not being a lot larger, is because the powers that be, tend to get into their own way. For example, the St. Louis city limits are the exact same as they were in the 1800's, which left no room for expansion. The city "leaders" were so narrow-minded in terms of city growth, they thought they didn't need all that farmland which is now St. Louis County. When St. Louis County started to grow in population, they didn't want to be a part of St. Louis city. Several attempts have been made to merge, but to no avail. Also, you speak of families in the first segment of the video. That's all fine and good. But what if you don't have a family, nor wish to have one? St. Louis as a whole isn't growing, the population is shifting and getting older. You need to attract younger, SINGLE people to an area in order for it to grow and stay vibrant. Mentioning family-friendly activities isn't going to cut it. STL has great universities, but the local governments have never come up with a plan to keep those students here to live permanently. Once they obtain their degrees, they leave. I think that is a lot of St. Louis' problem when it comes to growth. The Delmar Divide is another big issue. STL needs to find a way to attract more immigrants to the area to settle North of Delmar to help build up the area. North St. Louis doesn't have to be majority black, what about Asian, Hispanic, German, etc.? If that were to happen, STL could be one of the most ethnically and economically diverse cities in the country. I am just curious, why did you pick the STL area to move to? There are so many other places around the country where you could have had a better quality of life?
@STLPM5 ай бұрын
Very good points you make. I moved to St. Louis because my wife is originally from here and it was more inexpensive than California.

@@STLPM Good luck being in STL. I will say this, even though California is very expensive, you are going to miss the diversity of it.
